With this Spring 2019 edition of the Mestengo, I would like to briefly cover the state of our beloved Association and our upcoming 34th Mustang Muster.
State of the MCMA
The MCMA is in a state of transition as we continue to evaluate and implement initiatives to counter the challenges that threaten our long-term viability. As times and generational shifts negatively alter perceptions and attitudes towards duty and responsibility in joining fraternal types of organizations, the MCMA’s focus and
mission needs to be continually scrutinized and redefined as necessary to create a purpose for our organization that offers a compelling and meaningful message that will inspire membership. Recruiting and retaining members is the lifeblood of any membership organization which remains our first order of priority. Our strategic plan must implement attainable changes that will inspire Mustangs of all backgrounds and eras to recognize the value in not only joining but actively participating in all aspects of the MCMA.
What is even more critical to our continued growth is the establishment of regional/local state chapters. Currently, we only have three chapters – the Florida Mustang Association, the Desert Mustangs of Arizona, and the Camp Pendleton Mustangs – which are doing what they can in maintaining membership and staying actively involved in their respective community. My goal for 2019 is to personally lead the initiative in establishing a Lonestar Mustangs of Texas Chapter in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in hopes that it will inspire others to follow.
Other strategic goals that are being discussed include, but are not limited to:
adding a link on our website posting employment opportunities and for members transitioning
from active duty to upload resumes for those members’ companies that may be hiring
establishing a memorial scholarship fund to provide educational assistance to a qualified dependent of a fallen active duty Mustang
sponsoring an annual golf tournament to raise funds for a designated veteran charity
coordinating an attendance of MCMA members to be hosted at an 8th & I Evening Parade each summer with a tour of the National Museum of the Marine Corps
identifying member MOS sponsors to facilitate using the MCMA as a foundation to initiate yearly MOS reunions
hosting a Mustang Social Event at the Hawk with each new WOBC class as well as reactivate presenting the Marine Corps Mustang Spirit Award to a Marine 2nd Lieutenant or Warrant Officer from each graduating class at the The Basic School.

To achieve these and our other goals, the MCMA needs new and existing members with the energy and motivation to contribute to our growth and success. In that endeavor, I encourage each of you to actively recruit eligible Mustangs to become a member of the MCMA. If you or anyone you know has been a past member and have not renewed membership because the MCMA was of no benefit, I encourage consideration to renew membership and help us define who we are and what we want to mold our Association to represent. More importantly for those interested in having a greater role within the MCMA that requires very little of your time, please consider stepping up for a leadership position such as one of our currently open Director or upcoming Officer vacancies (Vice President and Secretary) to help us build the MCMA into the illustrious membership organization it has the potential to be.
34th Annual Muster
As you are aware, the MCMA holds its annual Muster which includes its general business and board of director’s meetings, swearing in of new officers/directors and recognition of outgoing officers/directors, and our formal banquet. The Muster is open to all active members, spouses, their guests and widows/widowers of members. Our 34th Mustang Muster will be in Branson, Missouri, from Sep 17 – 22, 2019, and will be a joint Muster/Reunion along with the 3d Marine Division Association. For those Mustangs such as I that are also members of the 3d MarDiv Assoc, this is a wonderful opportunity to attend a single event where those from both Associations can reunite to share a weekend of camaraderie.

Donations to our Marine Corps Mustang General Fund are not only critical in meeting our monthly operating expenses but are always needed and appreciated. Additionally, we need your assistance in supporting the execution of our official business matters at this year’s Muster in Branson. As such, we are soliciting donations of any monetary value via this year’s Patrons List and who will have their name included in the Muster Banquet program showing their support of the MCMA. Mustang Inducted into Hall of Fame MCMA Member CWO-4 Gloria Anita Krug, USMCR (Ret), of New Oxford, Pennsylvania, took up a nontraditional hobby in her retirement. That hobby developed into a passion and recently got her inducted into the United States Track & Field Masters Hall of Fame. Krug was the only woman out of five athletes who were inducted into the hall during the USATF Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Spokane, Washington on July 25 – 29, 2018. “You don’t stop playing because you get older, you get older because you stop playing,” Krug said. “My workouts make me feel good, and it gives me something to do other than sit around and do noth-ing, which some people do.” During her career, Krug has set 20 American records in horizontal jumps, throw events and the throws pentathlon. She currently owns six records in the women’s 85 – 89 division. She set six world records in throw events and the triple jump. She won 10 national titles and also was ranked No. 1 in shot, discus, weight, hammer, throws pentathlon, ultraweight pentathlon, long and triple jump. “Gloria Krug is a truly exceptional athlete for any age. Not only is she one of the very best women throwers in the world, she’s also an outstanding long and triple jumper,” said Rex Harvey, USATF Masters Track & Field Chair. “She holds multiple age group records for women 80 – 84 and 85 – 89 in the U.S. “But more than anything, she’s a wonderful and very humble person who doesn’t brag about her accomplishments at all. She also has a great sense of humor.” When Krug found out that she was going to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, she didn’t tell anybody. “The average person you talk to they say, ‘So what?’ That’s the attitude. They aren’t really impressed,” Krug said. Krug’s next goal? To never quit. At a competition last year, Krug saw two competitors who were 99-years old. “The fact that they were competing at 99 is an achievement, and people like that inspire me.” Krug’s parents both lived to a little over 100, and Krug wants to continue to compete.

Krug practices six days a week, spending 45 minutes on her throws and another 45 minutes on keeping
in shape. However, she does not have a coach. Krug watches other people compete and imitates how they move. In order to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, competitors have to have competed in Masters Track and Field for at least 10 years. Krug has competed with the USATF for about 15 years. She attends about six competitions a year. USATF is the governing body for track and field, marathon

Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 History On 1 April 1968, at Marble Mountain Air Facility, Republic of Vietnam, Marine Light Helicopter Squadron-167 was commissioned. From commissioning date until June of 1971, HML-167 would participate in operations against communist forces in the Republic of Vietnam. Flying UH-1E’s for the duration of its tenure in Vietnam, HML-167 achieved distinction with the following awards: Commanding General Third MAF “Outstanding Performance” (1968), Presidential Unit Citation with a Bronze Star, Meritorious Unit Citation with a Bronze Star, National Defense Service Streamer, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with a Palm, and the Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation. Additionally, on 21 June 1969, LtCol. T.F. Miller, the HML-167 Commanding Officer, dropped the first helicopter bomb. This was accomplished using the Helicopter Trap Weapon (HTW). In May 1971, HML-167 was the last operating helicopter squadron in the Republic of Vietnam. On 26 May 1971, the squadron held its official stand down in the Republic of Vietnam, concluding over 60,000 combat flight hours.

Henry Lewis Hulbert was born 12 January 1867 in Kingston-Upon-Hull, Yorkshire, England. From at least 1889 to 1891 he served as a public works inspector and magistrate, Kinta District, Perak State, Malay States.
He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps 28 March 1898 at Mare Island, CA. In April 1899, while serving as a member of the Marine Guard, USS PHILADELPHIA, in Samoa, Private Hulbert was awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism…”his conduct throughout was worthy of all honor and praise.”
The years that followed saw Henry Lewis Hulbert’s steady rise through the enlisted ranks. He never missed an award of the Good Conduct Medal and his annual rifle requalification was never less than Expert Rifleman. His service record contains numerous commendatory entries by various commanding officers. By 1917 he held the rank of Sergeant Major and served on the personal staff of MajGen Commandant George Barnett.
With the expansion of the Corps just prior to America’s entry into WW I, Henry Lewis Hulbert became the first Marine appointed to the newly created rank of Marine Gunner. The Register of Warrant Officers of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, January 1918 shows him as first in precedence among Marine Gunners and the only officer of such rank to hold a permanent appointment.
Too old for combat at age 50, Marine Gunner Hulbert pressed for a combat assignment. Finally he sailed from Quantico to France with the 5th Regiment of Marines in 1917. Wounded at Belleau Wood, June 1918, he was twice cited for acts of bravery. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. General John J. Pershing, Commander of the American Expeditionary Force, personally recommended Hulbert’s promotion to Captain.
Heroism under fire at Soissons, where he was wounded again, saw him awarded the Navy Cross, com-missioned a Second Lieutenant and quickly promoted to First Lieutenant. Approved by the Secretary of the Navy for promotion to Captain, Henry Lewis Hulbert was killed in action at Blanc Mont Ridge on 4 October 1918. He was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in 1921. The USS HENRY L. HULBERT (DD-342) was named in his honor.
Had he lived, his four citations for bravery would have entitled him to four awards of the Silver Star Medal, established in 1933 and his four wounds to four awards of the Purple Heart Medal created in 1936.
