The Hough Foundation was recently awarded $7,500 from the Community Foundation of Southwest Washington in support of the Hough Family Services Coordinator. This critical position provides men- tal health and social service access to Hough children and their families. Hough Principal, T. Sean McMillan, partnered with the Hough Foundation three years ago to bring a mental health professional into Hough School to meet the overwhelming behavioral and social needs of the Hough students. Hough School faces unique challenges with its diverse student population, where many families are especially affected by these difficult economic times. In addition to providing direct care, advocacy and links to services provided outside of the school, the Family Services Coordinator is an accessible resource for teachers on a daily basis for individualized interventions with students that can help them be more successful at school. In addition, the FSC offers education to the staff regarding the complex emotional and behavioral issues that affect Hough students. The Family Services Coordinator is responsible for reducing the number of disciplinary referrals and helping to improve family follow-through with social and mental healthcare services, which ultimately results in children having greater access to their education and an opportunity to succeed. The grant from the Community Foundation will help improve the lives of hundreds of children in our community. HOUGH FAMILY SERVICES CENTERHOUGH FAMILY SERVICES CENTER Since 1992, the Hough Foundation has provided resources that promote physical, scholastic and mental health enhancement to Hough students, families and surrounding community. This is achieved through the Hough Family Services Center which offers three primary areas of service:

• Family Services Coordinator, Kelly Pranger-Achen provides mental health and social services to children and families.

• Volunteer Center Director, Barbara Hammon, recruits and manages volunteers supporting academic, developmental and artistic programs in the classroom, Lunch Buddies, Choir, Drum Group, Clothes Closet & Healthy Snacks.

• Hough Pool offers fitness and recreational opportunities to children at Hough and throughout Clark County.

Hough School’s Family Services Center is the hub of a vibrant & diverse community that faces unique socio-economic challenges. The services offered through this center bridge the growing gap between public and private resources aiding families in crisis. It represents the very best example of how an effective Community-School Partnership can provide a better quality of life for everyone. If you would like to learn more about the Family Services Center or receive a personal tour, please contact Executive Director, Angie Laughlin at 360-992-7060.

DID YOU KNOW 1 IN 50 CHILDREN IN THE U.S. IS HOMELESS?DID YOU KNOW 1 IN 50 CHILDREN IN THE U.S. IS HOMELESS?DID YOU KNOW 1 IN 50 CHILDREN IN THE U.S. IS HOMELESS?DID YOU KNOW 1 IN 50 CHILDREN IN THE U.S. IS HOMELESS? This is a staggering statistic just released from the National Center on Family Homelessness. Hough

Foundation is meeting the growing need within our own community through the Hough Family Services

Center and Hough Pool. Hough Foundation’s Volunteer Director ensures children at Hough are receiving

adequate food and clothing while the Family Services Coordinator works with families to provide support

and resources as well as helpful tools for children coping with the emotional impact of homelessness.

The Hough Pool Pals program provides community and skill-building swim scholarships not just to Hough

students, but to the Vancouver Housing Authority’s RISE & STARS children’s program as well as the

HOPE program through Vancouver Public Schools. These scholarships help children bond with their

peers, caring adults and connect with their community. For children in constant transition, this stability

can mean so much. Healthy snacks and mentoring are additional benefits of the Pool Pal swim program.

Schools and community centers are playing an even greater role in meeting the basic needs of children

and families today. Your support makes a tremendous difference.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The Hough Foundation has some great events planned this year to support the vital

programs offered through the Hough Family Services Center.

Bunco for Hough Kids a Great Success! Hough Foundation held its first Bunco for Hough Kids in February sponsored by Bank of America. 100 women came to Divine Consign to play Bunco, listen to music by North by Northwest, while enjoying appetizers provided by local restaurants, Mint Tea, La Bottega, Provecho, Vancouver Pizza Company, Ice Cream Renaissance and Village Pearl. Paul Christensen and Board Chair, KC Fuller, led a group of men who volunteered to serve the women all evening. The event also

included a raffle, game prizes donated by lo-cal businesses as well as a live auction for a two night stay for four at Port Hadlock Inn donated by Realvest Corporation. The event raised funds for the Family Services Center at Hough School. A big thank you to Divine Consign & Gifts for Our Community as well as BEIGEBLOND, LaPellah Restaurant, & McMennemin’s. This event will be back by popular demand, so look for an announcement in the Fall of ‘09.
