This past weekend, Key Club’s Region 8 had a fantastic picnic on Memorial Day filled with food, games, and fun! The picnic included Division 2, 32, 37N and 37S, which comprised of North Garland High School, Garland High School, Sachse High School, Creekview High School, R.L. Turner High School, Terrell High School, and Allen High School! It was held at Bob Woodruff Park. All the members were required to bring $5 to cover the cost of food, which enabled the Lieutenant Governors Miranda Mishan, Steffi Lee, and Arjun Sethi to purchase foods such as hotdogs and hamburgers, while other mem- bers brought chips, salads, pasta, ice cream, drinks, and plenty more. While the hot dogs and hamburgers were to be grilled, the picnic started off with an icebreaker, where all the members stood in a circle and each member was required to state their name, school, favorite pastime, and an interesting or creepy fact. Afterwards, we played games such as, “Hey Baby, Will You Smile For Me?”, “Kitty, Can I Have a Corner?”, “Mafia,” and “Big Booty.” The picnic was concluded with a PCM, where Lieutenant Governors Mishan, Lee, and Sethi reminded members to keep serving the community throughout the summer, stay on task, and not slack off on their responsibilities, as well as introducing the Eliminate Project. Missed out on the picnic? That’s too bad, be- cause we all had tons of fun and there won’t be another one for ten years! Haha, just kidding! THE OFFICIAL NORTH GARLAND KEY CLUB NEWSLETTER

DIVISION 2 OF THE TEXAS-OKLAHOMA DISTRICT VOLUM E 2 ISSUE 2 JUNE 2012

REGION 8 PICNIC A SUCCESS!

All the members were required to bring $5 to cover the cost of food, which enabled the Lieutenant Governors Miranda Mishan, Steffi Lee,

and Arjun Sethi to purchase foods such as hotdogs and hamburgers, while other mem-bers brought chips, salads, pasta, ice cream, drinks, and plenty more.

While the hot dogs and hamburgers were to be grilled, the picnic started off with an icebreaker, where all the members stood in a circle and each member was required to state their name, school, favorite pastime, and an interesting or creepy fact. Afterwards, we played games such as, “Hey Baby, Will You Smile For Me?”, “Kitty, Can I Have a Corner?”, “Mafia,” and “Big Booty.”

The picnic was concluded with a PCM, where Lieutenant Governors Mishan, Lee, and Sethi reminded members to keep serving the community throughout the summer, stay on task, and not slack off on their responsibilities,

as well as introducing the Eliminate Project.

Missed out on the picnic? That’s too bad, be-cause we all had tons of fun and there won’t be another one for ten years! Haha, just kidding! Stay tuned for future events because there will be plenty like this one, and you won’t want to miss it!

OPERATION BACKPACK & EPIC BOOK DRIVEThank you to all of those who donated to Operation Backpack! Operation Backpack was established to pack the basic necessities into a backpack and ship them off to homeless children in New York City. This includes toothbrushes, toothpaste, school supplies, etc. All of the supplies were due May 23rd, but we’re still accepting items, so hurry and turn them in!

Also, big thanks to those who donated to the Epic Book Drive. All of the books would be donated to low-income families. Any books were allowed to be donated as long as they were in good condition. All of the books were due on May 18th.Thanks for doing your part!

ROCK THE BLOCK MARATHON

ELIMINATE PROJECTKey Clubbers! If you haven’t known yet, we’ve been selling I <3 Babies bracelets for $3. We’ve started off with 500 to sell, and now we have less than 200 left, so sell, sell, sell! All the proceeds go to the Eliminate Project, which puts that money towards “eliminating” maternal and neonatal tetanus.

“Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one baby every nine minutes — that's 60,000 babies every year who will never grow up, make their mothers laugh, play with friends or dream about the future. The effects of the disease are excruciating —tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. A significant number of women die from MNT each year too.” So, what are you waiting for? Find any officer and pick up some bracelets to sell! The North Garland Key Club can raise $1500 alone on these bracelets, and every dollar counts!

Thank you to EVERYONE who volunteered at the Rock the Block Marathon! We had to wake up at 6 in the morning to make it to the event, which took place at the Shops of Legacy in Plano, TX. North Garland was stationed at the water station, where we passed out water to the runners. The event went very smoothly, and the coordinators congratulated us with free backpacks and make—up! Again, thank you to the coordinators for the free items, and thank you to all of those who volunteered!

KEY CLUB SPOTLIGHTThe North Garland Key Club newsletter recognizes any member who shows devout dedication and an astounding attitude. Hard work and being friendly does not go unnoticed in our eyes, so check the monthly newsletter for the Key Club Spotlight and see if you’re in it!

So, without further ado, we would like to recognize Peter Lim, a senior graduating from North Garland High School. Even though he was never an officer, he displayed some of the most dedication Key Club has ever seen, more than some of the officers, actually. He has always been more than helpful to his peers, especially when the officers pulled all-nighters to finish the scrapbook for DCON. Please congratulate him for not only being in the Key Club Spotlight, but for graduating in the Class of 2012. Good luck in the future, and never stop serving the community!

AND ONE LAST THING!On May 19th, North Garland High School and Garland High School had their Key Club inductions! The ceremony was conducted by our Division 2 Lieutenant Governor Miranda Mishan, so please congratulate your officers for finally being official!Michelle Pham—President Andrea Trinh—TreasurerCalvin Luu—Vice President Baochau Ton—ParliamentarianKimmy Pham—2nd Vice President Angeline Tram—EditorLinh Nguyen—Secretary Emely Villeda-Principe—Webmaster
