Director’s Corner WehadagreattimeatourlastTacofeedanddessertauctioninScottsMills.ThanksJaneandeveryonethathelpedoutbringingfoodanddesserts.Itwasfunforall. WewereveryfortunatetohaveveryniceandmainlydryweatherthroughmuchofOctober.Itis,however,goingtobecoolingoffandturningverywetinNovember.Theleaveshaveseriouslybeencomingdownwitha lotmoreyet to fall,andthemoss isgrowing.Weallknowwhat thatmeans,veryslipperyroads.Theclearityofvisionisalsonowreducingdrasticallywithgrayskies,earlydusk,brightheadlites,andmorecompletedarknessearlierintheevening.Besureyoucarryclearglassesaswellassunglasses.Also,don’tleavehomewithoutwarmerglovesandextralay-ersofclothesinthesaddlebagstokeepyouwarmwhenneeded.Itgetscoldreallyfastnow.Putthattogetherwiththeslipperyleavesandmoss,andwenow,morethanever,reallyneedtobecarefull.OK,nowaddtheincreaseinrainfrequency,sowehavepoorvisability,slipperyconditions,coolertemperatures,andaddedroadsurfacewatertogiveusthepotentialforanevenhigherlevelofslippery.Rememberthetermhydroplane?Haveyoulookedatyourtiretreadlately,orwasitthebeginningofsummerwhenwelastcheckedtreadandtirepressure?IhopemostofyourememberyearsagowhenDianaHilltoldusthatforevery10degreesdropinoutsideairtemperature,welooseapoundofairpressureinourtires.Soifyoulastcheckedyourtirepressureonan80degreesummerday,thatairpressureisnowdownatleast4pounds.Don’tletunderinflatedtireswithlittletreadbethepotentialcauseofaspinoutorworse. It’sthattimeofyearagain.Wheredidtheridingseasongo?Thisisatimewhenmanyofusputthebikesawayandwaitforthefirstsignsofspring.Otherskeepriding,althoughperhapsnotasoftenorasmuch. I’ve found that I don’tmind riding in the dark,thatIcantoleratethecoldfairlywell,andthatitdoesn’tseemtohurtmybikeatalltogetitwet–butIhavealsonoticed thatwhenyouputall threeof these things to-gether,ittakesnearlyallthefunoutofriding.(Inoticedduring the“goodweather” thathail takesvirtuallyALLthefunoutofriding). Forthoseofuswhocontinuetoridethroughthewintermonths,itisprettyclosetoinevitablethatwewillendupatsomepointridinginoneormoreofthecold/wet/darkconditions. Mostofusalsoknowwhatthatmeansandwhatextraprecautionstotake,butalittleremindernowandthen never hurts. Mostly, everything can be summedupbysayingthatitisagoodideawhenfacedwithwin-terridingconditionstotakealittletimetothinkandbementallyaswellasphysicallypreparedforit–whethertheridewasplannedorwhetheryoujustgotcaught35milesfromhomeat7:00Pinapacificstorm. The physical part is pretty straight forward –keepyourbikeandequipmentandyourselfintopridingcondition. Makesure youhaveplentyof treadon thetires(hydroplaningcanruinyourwholeday).Checktirepressuresandlights/signalsandhorn,etc.often.Thereisn’tmuch you candoabouta light burningoutwhileyouareriding,butyoucanminimizeyourexposureandpreventyourselffromstartingoffwithfaultyequipmentbychecking itoften. Keepyourcoldweatherandraingearwithyouevenwhenyouknowyouwon’tneedit(youprobablywill).Weallknowwhatthingswecandoandwhatthingstoavoidinordertokeepusphysicallyatourmostcapablelevel. Thementalpartisn’tanyharder,butitseemstobeeasiertoforgetorneglect.Coldcandullyoursensesand your reaction time. There are situationswhere itmaybe impossible toprevent this,butyoucanstillbeawareofitandcompensateforit.Forceyourselftobeacutely aware of what other traffic is doing, and keepfocusedonwhat isgoingonwaydown the road. Playthe“whatdoIdoif…”gameconstantly.Haveanavoid-anceactionworkedoutaheadoftimeforwhenthatcarstopped at the cross-road pulls out directly in front ofyou. Allowmore timeanddistance for you to react tothings–youwon’tbeyoursharpest,socompensate. Wetanddarkwillalsobotherodeyoursafetymar-gins.Youneedtoallowbiggermarginsbyridingslower
andgivingyourselfabiggerspacecushion.Maintainastateofheightenedawareness. Stayespeciallyawareof people behind you. Let’s say for example that youareridingalongacold,wet,darkroadliketheonegoingthroughtheJordanValley.Youhavetorideslowbecauseyourvisororgogglesarefoggedupandyourwindshieldhasbecomeopaque,anditisgettingreallyhardtotellwheretheroadis.Thisroaddoesn’tseemtohaveanyfog-line,andthecenterstripeissofadedorwater-cov-eredthatyouoccasionallygetshortdurationglimpsesofit.Therearewetleavesandbranchesintheroadfromtimetotime,andthecarbehindyou,theonewiththeniceworking defroster, the extra-bright headlights, thenewwindshieldwipers,andthedrivertalkingonthecellphonedecidestoencourageyoutostoppokingalongbygetting four feetbehindyou… that isalmostundoubt-edlythemomentwhenyoucanexpectthatdeertostepoutontotheroad.Youneedtoimmediatelybrakethenswerve(orswervethenbrake–butneverbothatonce).Thisisreallynotthetimethatyouwanttodiscoverthatyourbrakelightdoesn’twork,oryourtireisbald,or…Italsoisn’tthetimetobethinking,“IreallywishIhadjustpulledoverandletthat*&^*behindmegobyacoupleofmilesbackwheretherewasapullout.” Accidentscanhappentoanybody,anyplace,any-time,butwecanminimizeourriskbyunderstandingtherisks,minimizingourexposure,andgenerallyjustthink-ingahead.Pilotscallit,“beingaheadoftheairplane.” Someextra caution in planning our trips, eventheshortones,canalsohelpkeepussafe.IleftNew-bergforSalemonewinter’smorningwhentheweatherinNewbergwas clear, dark, and about 35 degrees. Ididn’t checkweather, after all, I was only going about35 miles – I could see what the weather was. Well,about16milesintomyride,Iwasinadensefog.Also,itseemedtobegettingcolderratherthanwarmerlikeitshouldbewhenthesuncomesup. Afewmoremiles,andInoticethatthefogdropletsarenolongerrunningupmywindshield–infact,thewindshieldislookingkindof“milky.”AsIgodowntheI-5entrance-rampatBrooks,Inoticethattheshoulderalongtherightside is frosty.I-5isOK,butIcanseesomesignsoffrostinthemiddleof the lane. Istay intheright lane,rideslow,andexitatMissionStreet. It is now verybright and very foggy,sortoflikebeinginsidealightbulb,andthereareclearlysomeslickspotsontheroad.IturnleftatTurnerRoad,aftermy footslipson the frostypavementwhen IstopforthetrafficlightatMissionStreetandTurnerRoad.Icanseethatthingsdon’tlookverygoodonTurnerRoad.AsIcreepdownTurnerRoadtowardwhereIwork,keep-

Well,thepointofthisisthatIwasjustplainlucky.Iamnotproudofmylackofplanningandthestringofbaddecisions Imadethatday,but I learnedfromthatexperience,andIdon’tintendtoeverhaveasimilarone.Ifanyoneelsecanbenefitfromthisexampleofwhatnottodo,thenperhapssomegoodcancomefromit.Theweathershouldnothavebeenanysurprisetome.Ithadbeen in the20’sallnight inSalem. TheTVandradionewsteamsweretalkingabouttheicefogintheSalemarea.ThemorningpaperIreadatthebreakfasttable,withoutlookingattheweathersection,showedthecoldfront. Mybike isevenequippedwithaNOAAweatherradio.IeasilycouldhaveandshouldhaveknownwhatIwasriding into; Ihadmultiplemeansavailabletome
to know enough to leave the bike home, but I didn’t.Evenafter Imademyfirstmistake innotcheckingtheweather,Icompoundedit.WhenIsawthefirstsignsoffrost, I couldand shouldhave just decided to be late,stopped, calledhome tobe sure theweatherwas stillbetterbehindme,turnedaround,andreturnedhome.Ihad“get-there-itis”(aconditionwhereyourjudgmentisimpairedbyfocusonyourobjectiveandyoutendnotbecognizantoftheobviousriskfactors).Iwasalreadybet-terthanhalfwaythere,somaybeit’sbettertojustkeepgoing,right?Iprobablymademyworstcompoundmis-takewhenIturneddownTurnerRoadwhenIcouldseetheroadwasfrostedup.TherewasahugeditchthatranalongTurnerRoadandtherewaslotsofmorningtraffic.IshouldhavedecidedbeforeIturnedtojustacceptthatIwasgoingtobelaterthanIwantedtobe(Iwasalreadylate). IshouldhaveparkedatarestaurantsomewherealongMissionStreet,hadacupofcoffee,warmedup,andwaited for thesun toburnoff the frost. I had the“almost theresyndrome” (anacutestateof“get-there-itis”whereyouareawareoftherisk-factorsbutoblivioustoanyconsequences).Ipressedaheadthatlast½mileknowingitwasnotagooddecision.Imightnotbesoluckythenexttime,sohopefully,Inowknowbetterthantohaveanexttime. Winterridingcanbeveryenjoyable,butrisksandexposures are different than they are during the sum-merseason.Youcanminimizetheserisksthesamewayyouminimizethosemoreprevalentinthesummer.Beaware.Beprepared.Bealert.Planahead.Knowyourpersonallimits,andstaywithinthem.Thinkaboutwhatyouareabouttodo,andwhatyouaredoing.

Ride and Taco Feed on October 17 WhatagreattimewashadattheTacoFeedandDessertAuctioninOctober.TheGrangeHallwasallwarmedupwhenwegotthere,andlotsofpeopleshoweduptohelpwiththesetup.Thirty-fivepeopleparticipatedinwolfingdownthefinespreadoftacos,refriedbeansandSpanishrice.Excellentcookspre-paredthefood.TheywereJaneAllen,MarshaFrancis,PattyNichols,AnneWagsterandLeannLong.
ConniebroughtthecoffeeandchocolateandWendybroughtplatesandutensilstoeatoffof.PatandMickBrendenhelpedwithaspecialprayer(askhim)thatbroughtthecoffeepotoutfromhiding.Lotsofhelpersarrivedtogetthetablessetupandthedessertswerefantastictolookatandyummytotastetest.
ThebiddingonthedessertswentsmoothlyandwascommandeeredbyMarkDostalandBillOws-ley.Ihadallocated$5(totallyinadequate)fortheeventandIfinallysnaggedadessertforthatprice.ButIdothinkitwasaresultofoverallpityforme.Nonetheless,IenjoyedthepurchaseddessertalongwithsamplingofPattyNicholsandMarleneSchroeder’stakings.
Lookingforwardtothenexteventandthankstoallwhohelpedwiththecleanup.Itisjustthiskindofeventthatbringsridingcompanionstogetherandmakesthemfriends!

Forthoseofyouthatmissedit–yourloss!Seriouslythough–itwasawonderfultime.Karenputtogether64oftheOregonStateParkslocatedalloverthestateofOregon.NotonlydidweswingbyafewthatbothDavidandIrememberedgoingtoaskids,butalsostoppedatmanywehaveneverheardof.Weusuallydon’tgetthechancetotouraroundthewholestateofOregon.Maybeasectionorarea,butneverthewholestate.Wewerefortunateenoughtobeabletotakethetimetogoridetheparksandseeourwidevarietyofterrainallatonce(IthinkDavidmentioned2800miles).Ourcoastlineiswithoutadoubtthemostbeautifulrideofanycoast.Youmightwanttoconsiderhangingontoherlistandcheckingthemoutwhenyoucan.Iknowweplanongoingback(inacar!)wherewecanenjoyhiking,walkingandseeingthesights! Theridingseasonisslowlywindingtoaclose,butsomejustwanttoalwayssqueezealittlemoreoutoftheyear.SuchwasthecaseonOctober25thwhenfiveSalemHOGmembersjoinedinonthechillyfunfortheRoadMaggotsendofseasonpokerrun.Theweatherprophesypromisedsubstantialrainduringtheday,butsomeofusarefromOregonandrealizethatabitofrainisnottheendoftheyearforriding.Theremusthavebeen40or50otherridersthatwerealsoseekingoutonemorefungroupride.Fortunately,theridesofarwascool,butnorain. Thepokerrunstartedwithagreatall-you-can-eatbreakfastattheAmericanLegionhallinLebanon.Theyalwaysputonagreatbreakfastthatcan’tbebeatfor$5,plustheproceedsgotohelpveteran’scauses inthearea.Aftersigningupforthepokerrun,checkingoutraffleticketsforlotsofprizes,andthe50-50,weshouldhaveheadeddirectlyupHwy20tothePointrestaurantinSweetHome.VrodBillconsideredthisabitboringandleadusonamuchmoreinterestingrouteonbackroadsthatarrivedthereinplentyoftimeandhappierforthedetour.Fortunately,theridesofarwascool,butnorain. ThenextcoupleofstopstookusthroughthecountrysidetotheBrownsvilleSalooninBrownsvilleandthentoJDCyclesinAlbany.JD’swasniceenoughtoofferfreepopandwaterwhichthoughcoldwastastyandwelcome.Theyalsohadcoffeeforthosethatwantedalittleboostofwarmth.JD’swerealsosellingahugecollectionofoldbikermagazines.OneriderwithahugegrinonhisfacewasstuffinghissaddlebagswiththeentiresupplyofEasyrid-ermagazines.Fortunately,theridesofarwascool,butnorain. ThefinallegtookusbacktoLebanontotheElk’slodgewhereweweretreatedtoafreebarbequeofham-burgers,hotdogs,beans,andpastasalads.Theplacewaspackedandtherewasalotoffunasthedrawingswereheld.Forthe50-50drawingacallwentoutfortheoldestriderontheride.Thetwooldestriderswereatourtable:Rogerwas68andVrodBillat69.Theybothgotapplausefortheirstrengthanddesiretoride.VrodBillgottodrawthetickettodeterminethe50-50winner.TheproceedsofthepokerrunwasfortheDefeatDiabetesFoundationcharityandthewinnerofthe50-50ticketlethissharealsogobackinthepotforthecharity.Aclassact.Fortunately,theridesofarwascool,butnorain. Sunset Poker Run - 9/13/09 WhatafunpokerrunSunsetHOGChapterputon.Wealongwith18SalemHOGmembersenjoyedniceweather,goodroads,andgreatfriends.Sunset’spokerruntookusforashortquicktripouttheColumbiaGorgetotheBridgeoftheGods.Thisisnotabridgeforthefaintofheart.Itisaverytallsteelgratedbridge,inwhichItriedtocaptureonfilm.ActuallyifIcouldrideacrossthisbridgewithonehand,whiletryingtotakepicturesofthewaterunderneath,itwasn’tthatwobbly-hmmmm,ormaybeaftertheroadswe’vebeenonduringourgrandadventure,maybeIdidn’tnotice! MostofthePokerRunRoutewasdoneupinthestateofWashingtononwindingpavedroadsamongthemassivetreesinforestsinandaroundthebacksideofMt.St.Helens.TheColumbiaGorgeunfortunatelyhadsomeleftoversmokefromsomerecentfires,whichmadethepicturesprettyhazy.Butonceweheadedintotheforestsawayfromthesmoke,wehadgreatscenicviews!SunsetHOGputonafirstclasspokerrun.Theroads,checkpointsandourendingpointwereallwellplannedout.TheendingpointwasataparkjustoutsideofAmboy,Washington,whichwehadneverbeentobeforeandworkedwellforthisvenue.GreatjobSunsetHOG. Wereallyenjoyedseeingoldfriendsthatwe’dnotbeenabletovisitorridewithallsummer.Bythetimewegothome,weendedupwithcloseto300milesonourodometers.Prettygoodforaday’sjauntintothecountry!
