Let’s see how this next chapter of the Austin-Healey of Manitoba unfolds.

This & That

- Jean Caron

This November edition of our Club newsletter will be my last article of “This & That”. While it has been a lot of fun to do this every month, there were times where suitable material was difficult to find. I find my interest in doing so is diminishing, so it is time to call it a day. Healey List that Patrick Quinn who lives in the Blue Mountains and is known to many of us as the owner of the only BN3 in the world, has moved some of his cars to a more secure location as the fire was dangerously close to his residence. Patrick went on to say that one of their club member’s has lost his home, all its belongings along with two Austin-Healeys, a Healey Elliott and a Healey Silverstone. Both the Elliott and the Silverstone are very rare automobiles.

Steve Pike of Marsh Classic Restorations in Australia has been named a finalist for the International Historic Motoring Award for 2013. This is an event organized by Octane Magazine where trophies are awarded in numerous categories for automobiles that have been restored during the year. Steve has been nominated in the race car category for his restoration of the 100S NOJ393 featured in the Healey Marque magazine in July and August 2013. He is competing with four other entries, an Allard Chrysler, the 1966 USGP Lotus-Climax of Jim Clark, a 1983 Brabham BT52 F1 car and a Type 51 Bugatti. The awards night will take place at the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London, England on November 14th. This is a Black Tie event with dinner and tickets can be purchased online through Octane Magazine for 150 British Pound per person, just in case anyone is interested.

About a week ago as of this writing, for the second time since spring, a Club member traveled to the USA to purchase a, a, excuse me I am gasping for air here, a 1981 Triumph TR8. Tom Struthers traveled to Ohio with Brian Lanoway and came back with a TR8 that has just over 1000 original miles on the odometer. Although I have not seen the car other than on pictures, Tom indicated that it is in unbelievable condition right down to the original tires. He is currently going through the car and

replacing the brake lines and such in order to ensure its safety when spring driving season starts again.

I reported last month that I was hoping to reach 6,000 miles with my Austin-Healey 100-6 for this year. However, while I came close, I fell short by 66 miles. I missed a couple of nice driving days in early October because of other commitments. Nevertheless it is the most I have driven it in a year since I purchased it in 1987.

As a result of unforeseen circumstances with the body shop, both Derek Wilson and Henley Cunnington had to move their cars and seek other locations to complete the bodywork on their Austin-Healey projects. What I found most amazing in this ordeal is that from the time Henley called me and the time I got to his place, about 20 minutes, he had already found a truck, trailer and three other Club members ready to assist. This is a great example which illustrates that membership in our Club, or any car club for that matter is very important and that there is always someone ready to help when help is needed.

Barry Payne’s MGB would not start. John Gilbert and Richard Weide went to Barry’s home to try and get it going. Turns out the fuel pump was not working. The picture shows John and Barry arriving at Graeme Lowden’s shop with John Gilbert holding a 7-UP soft drink container with gasoline as a gravity fed alternative fuel delivery system.

This happened a short while ago at the Wednesday gathering at Graeme and Joyce’s place.

Add to Your U.S.A. Shopping

List

- Mark Rogers

Recently Ann, Alex and I did a two day shopping trip to Grand Forks. We have our favourite stores, but I would like to add a new one to the Guy’s list.

I always stop at the Surplus Store for hardware, Home of Economy for farm/yard stuff and the little Sally Ann Thrift Store, just east of the Kohl’s strip, for all the other “budget odds and ends”.

I was walking between the Thrift Store and Kohl’s (where Ann was shopping… again, to use her $10 Kohl’s cash), when I stopped at the new Hobby Lobby during its Grand Opening Sale. This store is similar to a Michael’s in Winnipeg/Grand Forks, but I found a huge display to “retro” steel signs – from cars to motorcycles to sports and other things. I ended up spending a few bucks and was worth the stop for a guy.

And the sign below that I bought says it all:
