Borough of Etna
Council News Plans for the Phase I Green Streetscape Project are underway. This pro-
ject has been funded through a grant from the Growing Greener, Department
of Environmental Protection Agency 319 Funding Program. The Borough
has partnered with the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Audubon
Society of Western Pennsylvania. They are part of the team assisting the committee currently working with the businesses in the affected area. The
grant, in the amount of $374,000.00 will rehabilitate one block of the business
district in Phase 1 of the multi-phase program, by reconstructing sidewalks,
parking areas, tree plantings, curbing and other street features in our down-
town business district. When completed, the total project will reduce the
amount of runoff from roof and impervious surfaces caused by 1.25 inches of
rainfall by 155,000 gallons. Not only will the amount of runoff reaching Pine
Creek be reduced, but less rainwater in our combined sewers means fewer
capacity related issues such as combined sewer overflows that will need to be
addressed under the Borough’s Consent Order and Agreement and sewer re-
lated permits. It also means less rainwater in the ALCOSAN system that
needs to be conveyed and treated. This past January the Borough purchased a small street sweeping
machine from the Federal Surplus Program at a cost of $2,500.00. This
is the normal annual cost of hiring a private contractor to do a once-a-
year sweeping throughout the town. We now are capable of sweeping
more regularly on our own schedule. We are currently developing a
schedule for routine sweeping which will be publicized at a later date.
We are using the machine often, hitting the high traffic areas several
times a month. This is a cost savings to the borough and will help us
meet storm water and controls for the combined sewer system by helping
keep street debris out of the combined sewer system. The Federal Sur-
plus Program sells used equipment to government agencies at reduced pricing. We would like to thank McCandless Sewer Authority who
brought the sweeper back from Harrisburg at no cost to the Borough. Etna Borough is a member of The Congress of Neighboring Communities
(CONNECT), which is an initiative out of the University of Pittsburgh which
strives to develop and enhance ways the City of Pittsburgh and the 36 neighboring
municipalities that surround the City can work together to resolve crucial policy
concerns that span municipal boundaries such as economic development, efficient
regional services and infrastructure enhancement. The group was formed over
three years ago and has worked on many issues that face all of the communities
who make up the urban core. Etna is currently part of a twenty-three member mu-
nicipal committee who received a U.S. Department of Energy “Sun Shot” grant as part of their SunShot Rooftop Solar Challenge grant program. The program will
create the framework to develop model zoning ordinances and best practices for
permitting and inspecting solar processes using the Solar.
In order to enrich its work with local community members in the region,
CONNECT is creating a Citizens Advisory Council to empower citizens to
create informed solutions to policy issues that the CONNECT communities
share. The Citizens Advisory Council will play the critical function of an
advisory board to the CONNECT Executive Committee. For more informa-
tion and to apply, please contact Kathy Risko, CONNECT Associate Direc-
tor at [email protected] or 412-624-7530.

Fire Department News We are pleased to report that the Etna Volunteer Fire Com-
pany has received federal funding assistance for two projects.
First they will be purchasing a new pumper to replace their 1984 fire engine that is out dated and has a variety of safety
concerns. Additionally, they have received funding for the
replacement of their Hydraulic and Pneumatic Rescue equip-
ment. The grant funds of $460,000.00 are a welcome addition.
With the pursuit and acquisition of these grants funds, a
tremendous amount of new public safety equipment will soon
be available to responders in and around the Etna Borough.
These grants, coupled with the continued support of the Bor-
ough and our residents, will soon help make the Etna Volun-
teer Fire Company one of the best equipped fire stations in our
area. Congratulations, Etna Volunteer Fire Department of getting these grants to enhance protection of life and property in and
around our community.
Happy 100th Anniversary,
Girl Scouts of America!
Did you notice the bright green ribbons on the decorative
lamp posts, street signs, parking meters, gazebo and kiosk in
the business district this past March? That was the handiwork of Etna Girl Scout Troops 50201 and 50461 who chose this
activity to mark this grand occasion. Attached to the ribbons
was a note stating “Girls Celebrating 100 Years, March 12,
1912 - March 12, 2012”. Congratulations to the girls and the organization! Many residents thought that the ribbons were
placed in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, comment-
ing on how great the place looked during the Christmas season and this past fall with the
cornstalks and ghosts! Great work Girl Scouts,
Great Work Holiday Committee (Christmas) and Great Work Etna Economic Development
Corporation (fall decorations)!

PRODUCTS, INC. 75 Sycamore Street

Tom Lennon, the owner of Woodland Wood Products, Inc. began his career in 1979. He originally worked for a Pittsburgh display company, graduated to
shop foreman and in the spring of 1990, decided to start his own company.
His first location in the North Side became a big success and in 2000 he
had outgrown the North Side space and relocated to Etna. He now has a
12,000 square foot building which is more than adequate to meet his needs.
Woodland Wood Products, Inc. manufactures custom wood products
specializing in the commercial restaurant industry. Tom’s artistic creativity
is evident in all of his projects. They are an approved vendor for Denny’s,
Inc. and have completed jobs at Jimmy Wan’s and Donato’s Restaurant, all
located in nearby Fox Chapel.
In 2010, Woodland Wood Products was chosen to manufacture the first
“green” restaurant within the city of Pittsburgh, Eat’n Park in the Water-works Mall.
A few of the restaurant items Tom can provide are booths, tables, salad
bars, display cases and shelving units. He can also furnish you with recep-
tion desks, conference tables, filing cabinets, computer stations, entertain-
ment units, kitchens, and vanity tops and bowls.
After the flood of Ivan in 2004, Woodland Wood Products was left with
three feet of water in their shop. With the help of employees, their families,
friends and neighbors on Sycamore Street, they reemerged, stronger than
ever. After the flood, Tom created, built and installed the Etna Borough
Council Desk now located in Council Chambers on Butler Street.
Tom currently has eight employees at Woodland Wood Products; two who have been with the company for over 15 years.
Tom and his wife Denise both say they love being in Etna. They are
celebrating their 22nd Business Anniversary this spring and hope to con-
tinue to provide quality custom products to their clients at reasonable
prices. Part of that personalized service includes consulting with clients
and furnishing solutions to any problems that may arise, then manufactur-
ing and finally installing the finished product.
So, if you are in need of a new bar, podium or cash register stand, give
Woodland Wood Products a call. Tom will be happy to give you an esti-
mate and create a blueprint to match your specifications. To contact Tom,
either call the shop or email him at [email protected].

PRIDE OF ETNA COMMITTEE NEWS The Pride of Etna Committee completed part
of their annual beautification project on Saturday,
April 21. They painted the building between the
batting cages at the ball field. One of their mem-
bers, Eve Schafer, designed and painted the mural
for the building, honoring our country with the red,
white and blue, so fitting since the field’s name is
“Dougherty Veterans Field”. Thanks Pride of Etna
for your hard work. In February and March, the
volunteer group collected close to forty bags of
trash in their once-a-month volunteer clean up on the third Saturday of the month. They also worked
with the business community to try and raise funds
for the replacement of the batting cages at the field
which had collapsed during the heavy snowfalls of
2010 and collected $10,000.00.

Three of the 2011-2012 Shaler Area Inline Hockey Teams won State
Championships this winter. The Junior Varsity 1, Junior Varsity 2 and Ele-
mentary 1 teams all won championships. Student players Neako Zelepos,
Morgan Burke, Justin Moore and Mitchell Wiggington are all from Etna and
we congratulate them on a job well done! Many of players on the team played
Etna Deck Hockey.
THE GARDEN OF ETNA
The Garden group officially
kicked off its second year as the
raised beds were prepped on March
26. Two days later, cold weather plants were transplanted from the
Shaler Area High School greenhouse. Broccoli,
cauliflower, lettuce and peas will be yielded from
these plants. This transfer of plants from the green-
house to the beds marks a partnership that was
formed between the Garden of Etna and Shaler
Area High School to grow plants from
seed. This venture will not only culti-
vate vegetable plants but also relation-
ships between students and community
members.
