Volume 27, Issue 2, 2017 The Liberty Hill Connection From the Desk of the Interim Pastor... "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40:31 NIV) Dear Liberty Hill Family and Friends: We have been richly blessed over the past several weeks with the beauty of our celebrations. Thank you for your generosity and your hospitality demonstrated by sharing fellowship and hope with one another, and with those whose lives are challenged by life's circumstances. We begin this new season together with the promise that God's abundant love and mercy are with us. We are bound together in a tapestry of faith that propels us to seek and to know and to believe that Jesus Christ is Lord. During the next few months we will embark upon a journey of discernment. We will share stories, and dreams, and hopes, and anxieties. We will seek to know where God is calling Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church to go. We will examine our mission and our purpose, and by the Holy Spirit, we will be led to join God in the work that God is already doing. I invite you to continue to pray fervently for the church, that we may be strengthened and equipped to do the will of Almighty God. Even as we discern the future, it is important to remember the glorious history of this community and this congregation. We will be careful to honor those traditions that shape us and sustain us. We will be ever mindful of our members and friends who are sick and shut-in. We will do all that we can to share the love of Christ with them. In all that we do, we will celebrate the grace and love of Jesus Christ. We have been given this rich heritage, this amazing opportunity to be the children of God. Wherever he leads, let us go. Blessings, Dot

"Long Ago at Liberty Hill"

By Sylvia Hudson

WATEREE MESSENGER: February 17, 1938 Miss Margarette Richards, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Richards, teacher of music in the Columbia College, has been granted a six months leave of absence to take a course of instruction in New York. She left last week to take up her studies. {Editor: Born in Liberty Hill on August 21, 1901, Miss Richards graduated from Winthrop College in 1922 with a

degree in music. She taught music there after graduating and later moved on to serve on the faculty at, Queens’s College in Charlotte and later Columbia College. She served as the organist for LHPC from 1972-1991. Our beloved Miss Margarette died in April 2001. - See “A History of Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church 1951-2001 by Aileen Greer Norris’ available from our church office.} WATEREE MESSENGER: February 28, 1938 The recent spell of fine spring like weather has enabled farmers to do a lot of work on their farms and also encouraged early gardeners to prepare and plant some of their vegetable seeds sooner than is usually done. However, winter seems to have returned in real earnest. Ice and frost were plentiful some mornings last week and fears are that the fruit crop will be ruined or greatly damaged. CAMDEN CHRONICLE: February 20, 1939 Sunday last was a pleasant spring like day, and people were taking advantage of the pleasant weather for automobile riding. In the evening cars on Highway 97 were passing so often that one was in sight almost continually. The John G. Richards Highway No. 97 has some splendid scenery and is getting to be a much traveled route. CAMDEN CHRONICLE: February 20, 1940 “Believe it or not,” during the recent very cold weather something killed a chicken in the small fowl house of nearby resident Henry Bailey. A night or two later he heard a disturbance among the chickens and went to see about it. An owl had a chicken in its claws. He killed the owl with a stick and went back to bed. Some hours later he heard the chickens again and went out and found another owl had a chicken in its claws. He killed it with a stick also. Both chickens were alive and not much hurt and both owls were of the small kind, known as screech owls, and not generally supposed to kill large chickens. {Editor: The Robinson and Hudson families should take note!} CAMDEN CHRONICLE: February 18, 1941 There was a Valentine story hour for small children held on Friday afternoon. On account of the bad weather it was held at the community house instead of at the Liberty Hill library. CAMDEN CHRONICLE: February 11, 1944 The family of the late R.C. Jones, who served the Presbyterian church for many years as deacon, Ruling Elder and Sunday school superintendent, in honor of his memory, had high-grade book racks installed on the {back of the} church seats.

Joan Clark and I will serve as your elders for Education and Outreach in 2017. I am grateful to be a member of a church that does so much to help others. As I put my thoughts together for this newsletter article, these outreach ministries came to mind.

We are very fortunate to have two elders, Gwen Starnes and Doug McDonald, involved in very important ministries the past several years. Gwen has spearheaded donations of clothing and toiletries to organizations that assist persons who live in very destitute circumstances. Doug has travelled with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance across the country to lend his expertise and knowledge to help people whose lives have been uprooted by natural disasters. Even though Gwen and Doug have completed their present terms as elders, they will continue to be committed to the ministries they hold most dear. Our church family and friends have been generous in their contributions in other ways. The Angel Coat project provides warm clothing for children at Baron DeKalb Elementary. We raise funds for local food charities with Dimes for Hunger and Souper Bowl of Caring. There is a donation box in the fellowship hall for donations of canned goods. The summer’s Camp in A Van program would not be possible without our church’s commitment to children who live within and also beyond the boundaries of our community. One of our new outreach programs will be the printing of postcards that will have the times of our church services (both on the Hill and at Lakeside). The dates of our six unified services will be included as well as church contact and website information. We encourage church members and friends to pick up a few of the cards to share with folks in the community. As I composed this article, the words of the following hymn came to mind. Let’s challenge ourselves to sing (or even hum) a few lines of it each day to express our resolution to strengthen our outreach efforts. Joan and I hope you will contact us with new outreach ideas.

Give of your best to the Master; Give Him first place in your heart; Give Him first place in your service; Consecrate every part. Give, and to you will be given; God His beloved Son gave;

Gratefully seeking to serve Him, Give Him the best that you have.

With Much Love to You All, Laura Horton

A Message from the Clerk of Session… Greetings from the session of Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church. As the new Clerk of Session for 2017, I have been asked to write a summary of the January 15th session meeting. First, I would like to say I am honored and humbled at the responsibility given to me by the session and I ask for each member to continue to pray for your session as we try and discern God’s will for Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church. The session met with members of the church and community concerning the future of the Country Store which has for some time needed repairs. Sylvia Hudson, John Thompson, and Lisa Towell met with the session to discuss options including forming a committee to develop a plan for restoration and use of the country store building. The session moderator presented the session with an opportunity to have Dr. David Leininger (former pastor of LHPC) come and visit our church to lead a worship service and talk to us about his book A Color Blind Church in a panel discussion to follow worship. His book is available on Amazon or you could borrow it from one of the session members when we get done reading it. ☺ Dr. Leininger’s book is a brief history of his attempt to merge LHPC with Messiah Presbyterian Church in the 1980’s. The 5k LakeStride and Fun Run will be held at the Lakeside Pavilion on April 22nd. Please clear your schedules and get those running shoes warmed up. All proceeds from the Lake Stride event will go to help fund the Camp in a Van summer day camp for the youth of Liberty Hill and surrounding area. This is a great way for us all to do a little outreach ministry, any and all volunteer help is welcome. You may also notice a change in the bulletin with the prayer list. The session has started to implement a few changes to help those who use this list for prayer. As we continue in this time of transition please know that your session is working for you through the Holy Spirit. If you have any concerns, please contact a member of the session, our Interim Pastor, Dot, or the church office. As the Clerk of Session I am available via email: [email protected] or phone 803-804-4342. Thank you for the opportunity to give the highlights of the January Session Meeting. See you in church on Sunday, and remember Sunday school is help in the education building and Miss Bettie Richards Hall at 10 a.m.

In His service, always, Rob Jones
