The 32” x 80” pass door has an aluminum frame construction with a shiplap design to provide a durable, weather- resistant seal. A continuous boxed channel bottom rail strengthens the door against wind and horizontal deflection, and a rain cap stops water from accumulating around the opening. The door opens and closes with a geared hinge to ensure smooth operation and longevity. The interior and exterior are primed and coated with a baked-on polyester paint finish for a low-maintenance, rust- resistant surface. “By reinforcing the pass door from the inside, we were able to eliminate a weld joint on the exterior aluminum frame to give the entire unit a sleeker, seamless appearance,” says Clopay commercial product manager Jill Dodson. “The new design is a win for both form and function.” A pedestrian pass door is ideal for applications where a standard entry door cannot be installed because of space limitations. It helps save on heating and cooling costs by reducing the number of times the main overhead door needs to be opened and closed. “Fewer operating cycles means less wear and tear on the springs and hardware and lower maintenance costs over time. Combine our pass door with our overhead sectional steel door construction and insulation options and there is a real opportunity for building managers and specifiers to save on operating costs,” adds Dodson. The new design is available on Clopay commercial models 3720, 3722, 3724, 3200 and 3220 with a ribbed design, up to 16’2” wide x 16’ tall.

LAST MONTH'S CASE & ANSWER

NOTICE TO CASE READERS:All business cases in the Garage

Door News involve fictitious companies facing realistic business

problems.

The Case PageCase 28-5 Answer:

Past issues of The Garage Door News are available at www.garagedoornews.com

Case 28-5: Forecasting Growth One of the most difficult aspects of being a manager or entrepreneur is the task of balancing the needs of the present with the expectations of the future. In this case, GDN Doors is in a good position because sales and profits are strong. But Bill is concerned that he may be caught off-guard if the economy changes. Expecting a continuing strong economy, he may hire skilled staff to allow for continued growth. He may invest in additional space, vehicles or equipment. If the economy quickly turns, these could result in financial burdens. But he also has to acknowledge that failing to make these moves presents an equal, though opposite, risk. Without investment, the company may not be able to keep up with demand. This can result in market share loss that presents additional future risks. So the key is to not focus on one side of the risk situation, but to position the company so that it can react to either situation. This means that Bill would be wise to ensure that his operations have flexibility. So, for example, expecting growth, Bill may want to invest in additional storage space. He does not need to buy the space, or commit to a long term lease. Most importantly, he can keep an eye on cash flow and cash management. When a company is faced with uncertainty, it is always easier if there is cash in the bank. So if the economy slows and sales lag, and invoices are paid slower than usual, the company has the strength to ride out the change. And if the economy booms, cash in hand helps offset the cash flow difficulties that come with rapid growth.

Case 28-6: Managing to Get Away When Bill started GDN Doors seven years ago, he was a hungry installer who worked every project he could get. He had several years of installation and service experience, and quickly became comfortable with sales and marketing. He did some of the projects alone. For others, he hired people on a project basis. His success was slow. It was almost two years before he hired a

full-time installer and his first real non-installation employee – part time invoicing, accounts receivable and accounts payable. Now, after seven years, the business is healthy and operations are stable. Bill's focus on gradual growth was supported by a hard working team. His family and friends repeatedly note that Bill hasn’t taken a real vacation since he started the business. His usual answer has

been: “I don’t have the time to get away for a week or two.” But a comment from the owner of a local plumbing company recently had Bill thinking. The fellow entrepreneur noted: “I know that it looks like you don’t have the time to leave. But you also don’t want to burn yourself out. Your company will really be in trouble if you’re too exhausted to work.” So Bill has decided to plan

a vacation as an insurance policy – an investment in himself as a company asset. But how does he hand over management of the small company for the first time? Is it really a vacation if he has to check email and call in regularly?

Though the company had been in business for many years, the past few years had seen the strongest sales for GDN Doors. The company, which focused exclusively on commercial/industrial installations and service, had experienced strong growth. The company had seen revenues and profits grow. Bill, the owner and general manager of GDN Doors, had to acknowledge that the sales growth did not come from gaining market share. Instead, the economy was strong enough to let the full market grow. This meant that one of the key issues for GDN Doors and their competitors had been the availability of labor – skilled or ready to be trained. Most recent decisions had been based on the expectation that the economy will continue to grow at the current rate. The key concern at this point, for Bill, is whether to continue expecting a growing economy or whether he should start to set up his strategy as if the overall market could be stable for the next few years. This would impact his intentions to hire and train new installers. It would also have implications for his pricing decisions over the next six months – especially because many of his large projects required bids that would actually impact installations months later. Bill is not actually pessimistic about the economy. He just wants to avoid being the type of manager who assumes that the economy will maintain its current pattern. What advice do you have for Bill?

Schweiss Supplies 13 High-Tech Container DoorsMINNESOTA - Raven Production Management Company of New Orleans creates memorable experiences for patrons and artists alike, from basic stage arrangements and portable refreshment containers to multi-level risers and platforms. New to Raven is the construction of arena and concert container units that will be used at several Los Angeles area events and across the U.S. Raven PMG has ordered 13 Schweiss Doors bifold liftstrap doors for these container building units. The custom doors are 13 feet, 3 inches wide by 7 feet, 2 inches tall, with manual latches and a 145-mph wind load. The doors also have white liftstraps and white motors. The outside of the bifold doors are clad in an aluminum composite material (ACM) panel to provide a flat surface at a more reasonable price than a thicker aluminum panel. Schweiss Doors advises, when you desire larger panel modules or panels with greater impact resistance, ACM is the way to go. These permanent “containers” measure 15 feet high, 15 feet wide and 15 feet tall. They are versatile and used for much more than storage

or as an event food concession or portable product sales buildings. The unit designed for Bud Light has an interactive photo booth, as well as an adjacent area for patrons. “Basically, we were contracted with Live Nation, one of our biggest clients, to build out 13 different sponsorship buildings for 13 of their amphitheaters,” says Chris Berends, a Raven PMG partner. “What Live Nation will in turn do, is take those sponsorship buildings and try to sell or rent them to different sponsors. The first one that was rented out this amphitheater season was to Bud Light. This coming season, I’m hoping all of them will be rented out to 13 different sponsors and permanently installed in different locations. I know they’ve already locked in a couple sponsors for next season.” “This was pretty extraordinary in the fact we prefabricated 13 buildings in our shop

and deployed them to 13 locations throughout the U.S.,” says William Nemitoff, fabrication director. “Normally, we’re an event fabrication company. We build a lot of structures for events that are temporary. This involved a lot of the same methods and practices we use on a day-to-day basis for temporary structures like a video, wall, lighting and such.”

Designer’s Dream Home Built With Overhead Door Aluminum Garage Doors

LOUISIANA - When designer and photographer Kelly Moore set out to create her dream home near West Monroe, Louisiana, she drew inspiration from three things – barns, old dogtrot houses and light. She ended up with a stunning “Barndominium,” a popular new style of home that melds modern and rustic design to create a large barn-like structure that’s centered around a long, open breezeway connecting the indoors to the rural outdoors and filling its spacious rooms with natural light. Moore’s barn, featuring Overhead Door model 521, has enough room for her family of five, a guest suite and a shop for her husband, all on 15 acres of land in the northern Louisiana countryside. The breezeway down the middle is flanked with garage doors on either end to divide the area to a living wing and the shop/office wing. A third garage door can be opened to allow free flow between the breezeway and the living room. “I knew from the beginning I wanted the modern aluminum garage doors. From the

moment I saw the doors in my friend’s home, I looked for ways to incorporate them into our new build,” said Moore, who used four garage doors

from Overhead Door Modern Aluminum Collection, installed by Overhead Door Company of Monroe. The aluminum garage doors, in-cluding a fourth door between the living room and home’s wrap-around patio, al-low Moore’s kids to ride bikes and roller skate from the center of the home to the outdoors, as well as expanding the light-filled space. The family also hosts events, live music recordings and workshops in the open space. “I wanted the ability to open up our living area to the outdoors and our won-derful views of the Louisiana countryside. This was the best solution and the best bang for our buck,” she added. The Overhead Door Modern Alu-minum Collection combines glass and aluminum for visual appeal, strength and light infiltration. The company notes that the door’s crisp lines and sleek look at-

tract designers to incorporate modern garage doors to enhance creative spaces while increas-ing functionality.

Chamberlain Group and Amazon Launch Free In-Garage Delivery

ILLINOIS - Chamberlain Group (CGI) will en-able free in-garage delivery for Amazon Prime members in 50 cities and surrounding areas across the U.S. through the Key by Amazon in-garage delivery solution. Only CGI products, including myQ-connected LiftMaster Garage Door Open-ers and accessories, will enable Key by Amazon in-garage delivery. “A recent survey found 72% of Ameri-cans who live in a house or townhome take se-curity measures to avoid having a package sto-len, including canceling plans/staying home from work to wait for the package,” said Jeff Meredith, CGI President and Chief Operating Officer. “As a self-contained extension of the home, the smart garage offers a safe and convenient option for package delivery. By linking myQ with Key by Amazon for in-garage delivery, homeowners no

longer have to reorganize their life to avoid pack-age theft.” Key plus myQ smart garage access gives homeowners control over the package delivery process while offering a secure space that’s big enough to receive a video game console and also takes weather out of the equation. Prime members who live in one of 50 eli-gible cities and surrounding areas can select “In-garage delivery” at checkout when they shop on Amazon.com. On delivery day, customers receive notifications via the Key app during every step of the delivery process, from when the package is en-route, to when the garage door opens for the driver to deliver the package and then securely closes. Before a garage door will open, Amazon verifies that the correct driver is at the right ad-dress through an encrypted authentication process.

Once this step is successfully completed, the door opens, the package is placed in the garage and the driver will not move on to their next delivery until the garage door closes. Additionally, homeowners with a Cloud Cam (Key Addition) can also choose to watch their delivery occur in real-time. Security measures are set in place along the entire delivery process and every delivery driver passes a compre-hensive background check. “We are excited to collaborate with CGI to make the garage a part of our growing suite of Key by Amazon services,” said Rohit Shriv-astava, GM of Key by Amazon. “Prime members have already rated Key in-home and in-car deliv-ery 4.7 out of 5 stars. We are thrilled to be able to offer them in-garage delivery which we are confi-dent they will find an equally convenient place to have their packages delivered securely.”

Genie Integrates Aladdin Connect Smart System Into Builder Grade Openers

OHIO - The Genie Company recently announced the addition of integrated Aladdin Connect and its Wi-Fi capable system to its builder grade models. The Models 2128 and 1128, with either belt or chain drive rails, now have Genie’s Aladdin Connect system built directly into the powerheads. All the same features of Aladdin Connect are included, such as compatibility with smart platforms Alexa and Google Assistant. It also has other key attributes such as time-based rules in addition to virtual keys which can provide access to family, friends or service personnel as needed. The company notes that

Aladdin Connect is easy to set up with the entire process only taking around five minutes to complete. The Aladdin Connect app takes a homeowner or installer through the entire process. Once set up, setting schedules for the door to close or granting limited or full access to friends and family gives expanded control and monitoring of the opener. The 24-volt motor can lift residential sectional garage doors up to 8 feet tall. The Model 2128 can lift doors up to 7” per second while the Model 1128 comes in at 6.5” per second (+/- 0.5 inches per second). The openers come in a light-weight design due to the DC motor, making both models easier to install than heavier

openers. “One of the major focuses in the design of this opener is efficiency and value,” said Josh Funk, residential product manager. “We want to make certain that our customers are getting the most bang for their buck. These new builder grade units deliver just that.”

Haas Impact 900 Series Now Available in American Tradition Series

OHIO - Haas Door has introduced new 900 Series impact garage door glazing options within the company’s American Tradition Series. Made of steel, the garage doors feature four

impact window polycarbonate choic-es: Clear, Dark Gray, Bronze and Pebble. “Enhancing the American Tradition Series with the availability

of impact glass options makes this im-pressive product line more valuable for people living in areas affected by strong winds and storms,” says Jef-frey Nofziger, president of Haas Door.

Atlas Rolling Entry Systems Introduces ‘Live at the Counter’

“Florida residents outside of Miami-Dade can confidently order this prod-uct line knowing that these impact windows will help protect their garage during severe weather conditions.”

ONTARIO - Atlas Rolling Entry Systems is launching Live at the Counter -- a series of mini trade shows where the company’s supplying manufacturers can display their products and have staff available to meet with Atlas customers. The exhibit space includes a 40 ft counter and adjoining space

at the back of their distribution center where their supplying manufacturers can also train door and gate technicians as they come to pick up product from Atlas. Atlas General Manager, Dean Forget, explains that the new space enables increased interaction between manufacturers and the people who install and service their

products: “Suppliers can book a day or two and show products all day long, and can also set up the counter with working products. The counter is next to where customers pick up their products.” Forget expects this initiative to provide hands on training and feedback – to act as a rotating mini trade show for dealers and

their staff who cannot always get to the annual industry trade shows. Dates booked by suppliers will be announced so that customers can plan on attending. He explains that Live at the Counter will create more training and product awareness in the industry. “It’s a win-win for everyone,” notes Forget.

lelandIf Business is a Competitive Game, Why Don’t We Watch Game Film?By Dave Bussière

MANAGEMENT

People frequently refer to competition in the business world as if it were sports.

You have to be better than the competition….know their strengths and weaknesses. It is an easy metaphor to use. Both business and sports are focused on competition. They both also rely heavily

on skillsets. There is a level of knowledge and technical skill that is required to compete in the professional market. Both focus on training and development. Take the individual and the team and make them better at what they do. This is important. But sports adds an additional

dimension to their training. It is most obvious at the professional level, but it occurs at most competitive levels of sport. Coaches want to understand the next team that they will compete against and they want their players to understand the upcoming competition as well. One means of preparing for the next game is game film. Coaches and players study prior games played by their upcoming opponents. An ESPN article on NFL game film notes: "Game film is shot from two different angles – the sideline view and the end zone view. Every play is displayed first from the sideline and then from the end zone. The two are spliced consecutively so that you see the entire game in that order. The sideline shot is fairly similar to what we all see on television except every player is kept in the frame no matter how far the play stretches down-field. That’s important because coaches scour through an entire film watching each player throughout every play, grading them for the steps they took, the assignment they did or did not fulfill, and the decisions they made……The end zone shot tells a whole different story, especially for the offensive line and the front seven of the defense. It is filmed close up so that you can only see “the box” or the middle part of the field." So, game film provides a view of a competitor’s methods, strengths and weaknesses from key strategic angles. It provides insight into their preferred moves, and how they react to moves from their

opponents. As a manager, wouldn’t you love to have this insight on your competition? But, it is important to note that it is not just coaches (managers) who review game film. Players, as a part of their required training and as a means of improving professionally, also immerse themselves in game film. A Philadelphia Phillies website article explains how players use game film: "As blessed as these elite athletes are with their physical gifts, the mental side of the game is often what separates those who make it from those who don’t. Film study is a must. Being good at it and knowing what you’re looking at it is essential. "It’s not a lot of fun, but it’s part of the everyday routine. "I probably watch two hours a day on my own in addition to the meetings. We probably have three hours of meetings every day,” safety Malcolm Jenkins said. "It’s a fun way for me to unwind. There’s a picture in my head that I develop over the course of the week where I’m not really sure of the game plan early in the week, I’m not really sure what positions I’ll be in, so I want to become familiar with the opponent. "Then we’ll break things down and I’ll continue to watch the games over and over and play it in my head, so by the time we get to Saturday, the day before the game, I have a super-clear picture of what situation we’ll be in, what coverage, where I’ll be at on each and every snap. I’ll watch film over

THIS MONTH'S QUESTIONS

NOTE: These questions and answers are from various home im-provement newsgroups on the internet. These questions are real, and the answers are provided by other internet users, not by the Garage Door News. We are printing these questions to let the industry know what types of information people are looking for about garage doors and garage door openers. The answers will give you an idea of what type of "neighborly advice" is being given out.

FROM THEWEB

QUESTION 1: Painting windows on a garage doorQUESTION 2: Door troubles in hot and cold conditions

These questions and answers are from Quora.com

QUESTION 1:Do you think painting faux windows on a garage door is a good or a bad idea to do?

QUESTION 1, ANSWER 1:Very likely bad. Would pictures of windows convey some deep artistic message, or are they just intended as decoration? Just how good an artist are you? Unless you are truly talent-ed, most DIY art looks pretty bad to everyone else, even if they are too polite to say so. Most DIY art has the advan-tage that it can be taken down and stored in the attic as soon as de-cently possible. You would however be forcing the whole neighborhood to live with whatever you come up with for years, meanwhile signal-ing to the world that someone who

lives here has an inflated view of their own artistic abilities, and does not have a great deal of taste or good judgment. Quality of the art aside, how will it look in 10 years, when the paint starts to flake and fade? Any garage door likely has a factory applied coating system that, if left alone, does not need repaint-ing for at least 20–30 years. If you apply standard paint over the top of it, you are committing yourself to a maintenance cycle far shorter than this, because normal paint just won't last as long. You would thus be de-stroying much of the functional val-ue of the door. Will the next prospective owners of the property thank you for creating another maintenance head-ache? Or will they mentally deduct a thousand dollars from their offer price, to offset the cost to clean your ‘artistic intervention’ up?

QUESTION 2:What is wrong with my garage door opener if it struggles to operate in hot or cold conditions?

QUESTION 2, ANSWER 1:There’s not much to a garage door opener beyond its motor, its chain or gear drive, and its radio control system. If one of those component groups are failing (which is known to occur) then your only choice will be to replace the unit. If it’s more than a decade old, and you didn’t have it installed when you moved into the home, then it’s probably time for a new device. My advice: Find a local hard-ware chain (or big box hardware re-tailer) and get quotes for the installa-tion of a new unit. Take the quote that accompanies a good recommenda-tion for the store or retailer and have a new unit installed. I would strongly advise against doing it yourself un-less you have extensive experience as you can damage your door and in-jure yourself. The installers should be able to do the job in 30–60 minutes and their labor is usually part of the quote. Again, if the unit is older than

a decade, if you use it daily and if you live in an area with climate extremes, changing the unit is far more practi-cal than it is to try and troubleshoot. This is especially because even if it’s repaired, you are simply repairing an old unit. A new unit comes with a warranty and because it’s new, it should function far better than even a repaired unit ever would.

QUESTION 2, ANSWER 2:If you mean that the door starts to move and sometimes halts, due to the control that senses an obstruc-tion, I would check if the door, itself, is binding. Wood doors can take up moisture, warping the panels. That moisture can freeze, making it harder for the panel to flex as it must as pan-els turn at the top. In the summer, the humidity may be highest. Winter comes after fall. Leaves can get caught in spiderwebs breaking the electric eye beam. In summer, spiders are most active and grass clippings can get entangled. If the control is balky, a near freezing battery puts out little energy. It could be binding in the summer and a frozen control battery in winter.

The Garage Door News 22 JUNE 2019

Overhead Door Adds Two New Openers With Integrated OHD Anywhere Technology

TEXAS - Overhead Door Brand has introduced two new garage door openers for residential garage doors -- Legacy 650 Model 1129 and Leg-acy 850 Model 2129 -- that are inte-grated with OHD Anywhere Wi-Fi technology. The new Overhead Door openers offer quiet and durable per-formance while granting homeown-ers the ability to monitor and operate their garage doors from almost any-where using a smart device. “Legacy 650 Model 1129 and Legacy 850 Model 2129 garage door openers pack a big punch in a tiny package. While the openers are lightweight in design, our team has not sacrificed efficiency or power with the integration of Wi-Fi capa-bilities,” notes Christian Morrow, Brand Manager for the Overhead Door Brand.

Legacy 650 Model 1129 and Legacy 850 Model 2129 garage door openers have an opening speed of up to seven inches per second and are built with a 24V DC motor, provid-ing smooth and quiet operation. With the capability to operate doors up to eight feet in height, Legacy 650 Model 1129 can lift doors up to 350 pounds and Legacy 850 Model 2129 can operate doors weighing up to 500 pounds. Using the connected OHD Anywhere technology, homeown-ers can program multiple user ac-counts to give others, like family and friends, access to the garage door and can track access history. A time-based feature allows users to sched-ule door operation. The openers are compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U in-

vehicle wireless control systems and do not require an additional external

repeater kit or compatible bridge for function.

COMPETITIVE GAME (Cont'd)and over until that picture becomes clear.” Obviously, we do not have film of our competition. And I am not encouraging you to film competing door companies in your market! Instead, I think that it is worthwhile understanding that a focus on understanding the strengths and weaknesses of key competitors can increase the likelihood of success. This is true for managers, but is also true for front line employees. If a key competitor is always the cheapest, it can help

that everyone in the organization understands that this is the case and is prepared to speak to the issue. It may be a sales person who is confronted with the fact. Or it may be the installer as the door is being installed. Imagine the value of a door installer, in mid-installation, who can reply to a comment about the cost of the installation with an answer such as: “Yes there is a cost. But we guarantee our work. And we make sure that the door will operate properly and safely.” It responds to the competitor’s strengths and their weaknesses.
