From Martin Collard, our 2010 CNY MOW Service Award recipient:

I would like to thank the CNY MOW Award Service Committee for selecting me this year.

It is an honor to be recognized for the efforts one extends to a great group of fellow model railroaders.

As most of you know I am a believer in sharing this hobby of ours and through Borodino Scale Line I

get to meet many modelers beyond Model Railroading. The feelings are the same, sharing your hobby is

as much fun as the hobby.

I feel very fortunate to be associated with our very active CNY Division and want to thank Jim Heidt

and his fellow railroaders, at the time, for starting the Division many years ago. Through their efforts

and the combined efforts of many of us it has continued to grow. The Board of Directors new campaign

is to grow the division even more. With the help of everyone trying to recruit more members our CNY

Division can continue to grow and flourish. Working together we can keep this division active and

growing for many years to come.

There is nothing better than spending time with folks who share a common interest.

Thank you again,

Martin

Scanning of the KML photos begins By Gerry Leone, MMR NMRA Communications Director

If you’re a subscriber to NMRA Magazine (formerly Scale Rails) you’ve seen the “Timeframes” series

of photographs printed on the magazine’s last page. Those are all shots taken from the Kalmbach Me-

morial Library (KML) archives. The fact is, our NMRA Library has over 100,000 images, negatives,

slides, plans and drawings, and only a handful have ever been seen by NMRA members because it

would have entailed making a personal trip to Headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to flip through

the files.

Soon that will all change, thanks to the NMRA’s

Diamond Club. The Diamond Club is a fundraiser

specifically designed to support adding enhanced

content to our website at www.nmra.org. The first

item on the list of is scanning those 100,000 images

and making them available for download.

The good news is that scanning of the photographs

has begun! In August of 2010, Historical Archives

Services (HAS), the firm the NMRA Board of Di-

rectors hired to do the scans and design the photo

website, began receiving and cataloging shipments

of photographs from KML. HAS estimates that the

first batch of photographs will be available for

viewing online sometime in the first quarter of

2011, after a short period of beta testing late this

year.

LOOSE SPIKES—(Continued from page 2

PAGE 4

Putting the entire library online will be a costly, time consuming task, since each photo’s listing will

also contain highly detailed, searchable metadata, which is being added by the railroad experts at HAS.

This detailed metadata will make it easier and faster for users to find exactly the photograph they’re

looking for. Current plans are to make the low-resolution thumbnails of the photographs available to

everyone via the website around the clock. Users will be able to download high-resolution files, and

NMRA members will receive a substantial discount. Proceeds from the scans will help fund the re-

mainder of the project and future Diamond Club web projects.

As promising as this sounds, it’s important to remember that the Diamond Club still hasn’t reached its

projected goal of $75,000. If you haven’t contributed to this worthy cause, please send your donation

now to The Diamond Club, NMRA, 4121 Cromwell Road, Chattanooga, TN 376421, or do it online at

www.nmra.org/diamondclub.

NMRA scanning -1: Railroad-

ing experts at HAS begin the

daunting task of scanning the

Kalmbach Library’s massive

collection of photographs, draw-

ings, slides, and plans. The first

photos should be available

online in early 2011.

NMRA scanning – 2: Each of

the 100,000 photos in the Kalm-

bach Library must be digitized,

and important metadata added to

each scan to aid in fast, efficient

user searches. It’s a time con-

suming process that will be an

invaluable resource to members.

CHAMPIONS WANTED!! By Mike Flannery, CNY Chapter, NRHS

The Central NY Chapter, NRHS has acquired several pieces of historic railroad rolling stock for which

no volunteers have come forward to care for. These pieces are not going to care of themselves. The

Chapter needs volunteers to step forward to champion repair and restoration of these pieces before it is

too late. A champion would be the person to take the lead by recruiting a group of volunteers to de-

velop a plan for its use and/or display, survey the condition of a piece, and to draft a restoration plan

and estimate the funds and materials needed. The champion would present the plans and estimates to

the Chapter Board of Directors and, if such plans and expenditures are approved, lead a group of volun-

teers to implement the plans. The alternative would be for the Chapter to sell, donate, scrap or other-

wise dispose of the piece.

Equipment in need of champions include the Model 15 Burro Crane, the DL&W two-bay open hopper,

the Syracuse Candle and Wax single dome tank car and the New York Central baggage car #7456.

Time has not and will not be kind to this equipment so please contact the Board of Directors at once if

you wish to champion a piece. If you are interested in helping out send your letter to:

CNY NRHS Equipment Restoration, PO Box 229, Marcellus, NY 13108-0229

Or you can send an e-mail to [email protected].

Here is another piece in the National Railroad Historical Societies

CNY Chapter collection. This is the GE 80 ton center cab locomo-

tive that was used to switch the Jamesville Quarry. This locomotive

replaced the 0-6-0 tank engines. This is another of the pieces that the

chapter wants to restore. It is not known if this locomotive is in run-

ning condition at this time. If you have the desire and skills, why not

volunteer to help out with the restoration of this piece? If you have

the needed organizational skills, why not offer to champion the resto-

ration of one of the other pieces for the Chapter?
