ATTRACTING WILDLIFE

Presented by Beth Davidson

Wednesday, August 15th @ 7 PM

Hillsborough County Extension Service

Do you want to attract more wildlife to your yard but not sure how to ac-complish that in a neighborhood with more asphalt than trees? This month, Beth Davidson will be talking about just that, with suggestions on how to make your yard a haven for all things with feathers, fur, scales or multiple pairs of legs. Beth, a Senior Project Scientist with Cardno Entrix, last spoke to our group

in February 2010, addressing Flatwoods Restorations. She is back to help us understand the delicate balance necessary to provide food, shelter, water and nesting habitat for the animals who share our world with us and why it so vital to keep them around.

SPECIAL THANKS!!!

We appreciate all those members who take the time and effort every month

to pot plants or collect ink cartridges for the benefit of the group. The

plant auctions are a tremendous success both in terms of income to Sun-

coast and the benefits to the members who are able to purchase native

plants for their yards. Plus, the auctions are a lot of fun!

The ink cartridges keep the cost of printing our monthly Grapevine within

reason.

Green Isle Gardens Field Trip

On Saturday, July 14, 7 hardy members of the Suncoast chapter traveled to Groveland to visit

Green Isle Gardens, a beautiful oasis in Central Florida just outside Clermont. It was 92 de-

grees in the shade but the lovely shaded nursery and pavilion was heaven on earth. A light

breeze was stirring the pine trees and keeping the mosquitoes at bay as we got the grand tour

by owners Marc and Terry.

Cassia bahamensis (Bahama Cassia), Erythrina herbacea (Coral Bean) and Conradina ca-

nescens (Scrub Mint) were on my “Do not go home without” list but temptation swayed reason

and I also picked up a Lonicera sempervirens (Coral

Honeysuckle). Marc had great prices and even sent all

home with a Boehmeria cylindrical (False nettle), free

of charge.

Everyone left smiling with a carload of new natives to

plant but not before filling up at the Red Wing Restau-

rant just up the road, a fantastic local place with every-

thing from frog legs to buffalo burgers.

I feel certain we will all be making the trek back to

Green Isle in the not too distant future to stock up on

natives, but not without a stop at the Red Wing.
