Letter FromThe

Editors

Another day, another challenge. As men around the world accept the challenge of Movember, and we remember those who accepted the challenge of sacrificing their lives for our freedom, we aspiring journalists accept the challenge of this publication.

All of us have been working "seriously" hard to present a new magazine and with that, a new look! Our team is super excited to bring you interesting stories and articles to read. We hope you enjoy this and the many to come. Remember to take part in Movember, and wear your poppies. Have a great day everyone!

Your editors,

Rebecca and Kyle

Stop Shale Gas!

Stop shale gas! We have all seen the signs around, heard people talking of it. The plans to bring the shale gas industry to New Brunswick have not gone over well with its residents. SWN Resources, a Texas energy company has so far only been testing certain locations in New Brunswick for shale gas. This seems to be a step too far for some people. As a group of first nations protesters have taken up camp on one of the test sites, stopping test production. It appears that the only one

standing for SWN Resources is New Brunswick Premier David Alward, who has taken it upon himself to make sure that the shale gas industry is in New Brunswick. He has made claims of shared wealth and prosperity throughout the province, but the Protesters

have responded that they will not put a price on their families well being. It seems that some things are worth more than money.

Remembrance Day is one of the most important days of the year. It brings us as Canadians back to the past, to the time when our troops went to war, to fight to keep us alive and to keep our country free of oppression. We take this day to show respect for those who died and those who are still alive today. Every little bit counts and they deserve it.

This day is very important in Canadian history; it is all over the TV for about a whole week before it even happens. Then on the actual day, November 11th, they have TV channels just for Remembrance Day where a big ceremony goes on all day, in the ceremony we have two minutes of silence and they have bagpipes and all this interesting stuff to show how much we appreciate what they’ve sacrificed for us. Even at schools we have two minutes of silence and bagpipes and troops come to speak to our school.

On Remembrance Day everyone wears a poppy on their left side right where their heart would be. Most will even start wearing them about a week or more before. You can normally

find these poppy’s in stores you visit about a week or two before Remembrance Day. Members of the Canadian Legion drop them off there and you just have to make a donation, put some change in the little box and then you take a poppy for yourself. Proceeds go towards helping Veterans and Legion programs.

Remembrance Day is also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day. The red remembrance poppy is a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem "In Flanders Fields". Poppies red colour represents all of the blood spilled during war. Poppies are a subtle reminder of the cost of freedom and the sacrifices our troops still make to this day in conflicts around the world, so wear a poppy, bow your head for the two minutes of silence, and remember those who did the utmost to preserve our right to exist this November 11th and the many that will follow.

This winter for 2013/2014 is a very basic look. Staying warm is most important. Knitted outer wear is very popular this year and will keep everyone warm for winter. Basic blue jeans (a staple during Canadian winters) and brown or black jackets would best compliment knitted wear. Ugg boots look good with any outfit you choose to wear so don’t be afraid to experiment. Throughout the winter, knitted scarves can also be worn with anything, as long as the scarf pops out more than the shirt you decide to wear. Leather jackets look great during the fall and winter seasons, especially when complemented by some bold blue jeans.

All right Rob, Time to Take a Break

It  has  almost  been  a  year  since  Toronto  Mayor,  Rob  Ford,  started  facing    allegations  of  the  use  of  the  highly  addictive  drug  “crack  cocaine”,  but  what  now?  It  seems  to  be  conference  after  conference  for  Ford,  endless  hate  over  the  internet  and  sure  enough,  face  to  face,  but  Ford  keeps  saying  he  loves  his  job  and  will  not  step  down  anytime  soon.

In  a  recent  conference  Ford  denied  that  the  video  of  him  smoking  crack  ever  existed  but  he  did  admit  to  getting  out  of  control  “hammered”  on  St.  Patrick’s  Day.    He  states  this  even  though  the  Toronto  Police  apparently  have  the  video  of  Mayor  Rob  Ford  smoking  crack-‐cocaine.

Although  Ford  states  that  when,  the  online/video  journal  VICE  investigated,  they  found  that  the  Toronto  authorities  searched  his  garbage  only  to  Oind  bottles  of  Vodka  and  McDonalds  receipts.  Even  if  Rob  is  not  smoking  crack  (previously  or  still),  his  alcohol  abuses  and  attitude  is  not  of  one  who  should  be  Mayor  of  Toronto.  If  he  was  out  acting  like  this  he  probably  should  not  be  taking  photos  of  himself  completely  smashed  with  a  whole  bunch  of  Toronto  students.    It  might  be  time  to  take  a  break,  Robert.

Hallows eve or Halloween if you want, is the time for many activities some socially acceptable, some not. Luckily for me and every other candy lover Trick or Treating is still acceptable, and why not? You get to dress up, stay out late, roaming the streets, knocking on people’s doors, and receive candy.

This year Trick or Treating was quite an event, especially for me. Try Trick or Treating in a wheelchair with your best buddies saying they’re going to push you down a hill. The candy was worth it.

This year the junk food of choice seemed to be chips. Probably because they are cheap, and everything else is expensive, not just candy but gas, groceries etc. Even still, with the prices of essentials sky

rocketing many people got into the spirit and decorated they’re homes, passed out candy and enjoyed doing it. To those of you that were good sports, the candy lovers and I salute you.

By speaking to many good souls that give out candy, I learned that many people did not get as many Trick or Treaters out as they have in previous years. This could be because of many factors, the numbing cold, the bone chilling rain or maybe nobody wants candy anymore. Somehow I am willing to bet that the latter is not the reason.

Trick or Treating is widely considered a kid’s thing but predominately this year it was ruled by the Middle Schoolers and up. The costume trends predicted for this year were ‘Miley Cyrus the twerking

teddy bear’ and ‘Miley Cyrus and her foam finger’, but thankfully this year I did not see any of that, there were a lot of animals though, “sexy” cats, foxes, one really cute little lion and her sister the giraffe, fairies, bumblebees and some truly gruesome looking zombies. The best costume prize goes to the two little guys running down the street dressed as Batman and Robin (Robin was obviously the little brother), yelling “I’m Batman” and “POW, BAM, SMASH, KAPOW!”, while smacking each other with their bags. They were really in character. Great dedication right there, folks.

The predictions for costumes next Hallows eve are, the inevitable cats, and I’m thinking stuff along the lines of

HAUNTED

When it comes time for Halloween my thoughts turn to haunted houses and places here in New Brunswick in the Kingston area. The school Macdonald Consolidated opened in August of 1904, it was a jail, and part of it burned down, so naturally it is commonly thought among students and community members that it is haunted. If you ask any student or former student who is the ghost of MCS; all will say Henry Moresmith or he also goes by the name of lunar rouge. Apparently he whistles, moves desks and scares the janitors. How he came to haunt the school is slightly confusing because each person has their own explanation.

Down on Long Reach Route 845, there are several haunted places, Ghost Hollow, no headless horseman, but definitely a creepy place, it sends chills up the spine jut driving through there, and walking? Forget about it.

Kids in Kingston tell stories about the infamous Noel Winters; who killed at least four people, dismembered them and buried them on the Kingston Peninsula and speculate about whether his ghost haunts the area.

Frankly there are too many scary places in the Kingston Area to count; one I failed to mention is the Puddington House, it is haunted and that is all I’m going to say about it because it is scary and brings bad karma.

Book Review

Imagine if everyone over the age of fifteen just disappeared. All the adults, are just gone. And all around you is this dome. A barrier that shocks you every time you touch it. And, as if that wasn’t enough, people start getting powers. Powers so strong, so powerful, that they could incinerate you in a second! Alliances form, sides are being chosen, and war is on the horizon. Gone is the first book in a thrilling saga. With all the adults gone, the children and teenagers must learn to get along, and take responsibility. Responsibility is the one thing that teenagers don’t want, the one thing that many people refuse to have, and the one thing that will keep them all alive in this novel. As teenagers and children take on the many roles of adults; things get even tougher when the kids from the prep school called Coates Academy come down from the hill. They try to take over the town and all of a sudden war has broken out. Hunger threatens and they must get over their differences in order to survive this disaster. Gone is a fantastic novel and I would recommend it to anybody.

The Hampton high school boys kicked off their season Sunday against Woodstock

high with a terrible defeat of 7-3. Hopefully the boys can pull it together for their next game, Thursday November 7

in Woodstock. Team enthusiast Sam Blackmore says the guys were just off to a rough start

and they are going to come out harder than ever Thursday night in Woodstock. Let’s

hope the boys bring home our first win of the season so

everyone can get amped up for (hopefully) another amazing

season.

HUSKIES

This hockey season should be a real interesting, and a rowdy one at that if I do say so myself. We have a lot of young inspiring players that hopefully can make things work and make Hampton high proud. All in all, Good luck on the games to come and show the world what Hampton is made of! Go Huskies Go!

Florida

! It is almost the season where people start celebrating the holidays and enjoying themselves. Feasting greatly on turkey and ham, followed by all the extra favourable holiday drinks. Where else would be a better place to celebrate the holidays than in the great US state of Florida where it is a hotspot for many tourist favourite sites, such as in Orlando there is Walt Disney World, SeaWorld, Universal Studios, and much more. Traveling could not be much easier today than ever. From start to finish you could be there in less than a days time (depending on where you reside). This article can help you decide if Florida is your place to visit this holiday, or if it is best to chose another.

! With every place on Earth, places like Florida have certain ways to appeal to each person individually. If you have kids, the only thing your kids will be talking about is Walt Disney World (Orlando), where Mickey Mouse lives. For every teenager they will mention places like Universal Studios (Orlando), or Busch Gardens (Tampa), where they will enjoy themselves to amusement rides, and much more. Adults have the luxury to take part in any one of the attractions as listed previous as everyone is a kid at heart, but you could have the possibility of going to Epcot if they want to try out different cuisines from around the world if you so please. You have the option to just skip Orlando with all the amusement parks, as you could do other things such as go horseback riding, fishing, swimming, or go for walks on the many beaches Florida has to offer.
