DISCOVER EXPLORE SUPPORT

Our Strategic Plan - LCI Forward

“OPT-IN” LCI Forward

To date in this Lions year (July 2019-February 2020), District 17A has inducted 68 newmembers, had 9 transfer in, and reinstated 2 for a total gain of 79. That’s great!

Not so great is that we’ve dropped 105 for a net loss of 26. The reasons for losses are:Other (2%), Non-attendance (3%), Non-Payment of dues (9%), Club canceled (10%),Deceased (12%), Moved (12%), and Resigned in good standing (52%). Obviously, we have nocontrol over some of these and little control over others. However, with focused effort weshould be able to do something to retain many of those who resign in good standing and are

dropped because of non-attendance. My purpose in this article is not to analyze all of the reasons that our members quit or tooffer sure fire solutions to solve our retention problem. More on that later.

We have had 25 consecutive years of net membership losses (200+ per year) in Kansas. The most immediate impact oflosing thousands of members is the loss of support for our many service and fundraising projects. Another impact isrequired re-districting within Kansas because we have to have a minimum of 1,250 members in each district. When I joinedLions in 1984, we had eight districts; now we have three. As the number of districts decrease, there is a correspondingworkload on Lions leaders because of the larger areas in each district.

Membership losses also result in less dues income for each Lions district and for the State Headquarters operations. This hasa critical impact on our administrative funds and our ability to provide all the services that we have become used to in thepast. A recent example is the decision that we can no longer fund the Kansas Lions News beginning July 1, 2020.

This is not a phenomenon unique to Kansas Lions. During recent Lions training, I had the opportunity to discuss this withincoming district governors from around the world. Almost all of them face the same challenges. Lions Clubs Internationalhas been aware of the long-term loss of members. There have been numerous programs to try and reverse the trend of losseswhile continuing to attract new members. There have been temporary successes, but no sustained multi-year membershipgrowth.

On July 1, 2020, LCI is launching the North America Membership Initiative (NAMI). Nine districts in the United States andCanada have been conducting a pilot test of NAMI during this Lions Year. I don’t have statistical results yet, but anecdotalfeedback indicates that it is proving to be successful.

I have joined with the other two incoming district governors to “opt-in” to implement NAMI this next Lions Year. You’ll behearing more about NAMI, our goals, and what help we need from you in the near future. I look forward to working withour clubs, our District leaders, our Global Membership Team, and PID Gene Vogel (our NAMI Champion) to make NAMI ahuge success in District 17A.

We Serve.

Melvin Jones, founder of Lions Club International, envisioned an organization that would existfor one purpose: to serve others. This is the essence of who we are and what we do best. Like allof you, fellow Lions, I'm also proud to be part of a worldwide organization whose sole purposeis defined by our motto, "We Serve." However, “the world of volunteering work has changed

drastically in the last decades.” The expectations set by the younger generation of volunteers have evolved, the pace of workhas picked up and automation is changing processes – inside and out. This evolution of the world of volunteering workrequires a corresponding evolution in leadership style. That is where servant leadership plays an important role. “A servantleader serves others so that they achieve the communal goals set forth by the organization” - John C. Maxwell.

Most importantly, the model in which servant leadership is employed is not a pyramid with theleader at the top, rather it’s an inverted pyramid with the strength being the point upon which othersare built up. And to set the same expectation for current and past officers in our organization; weneed to continue to reach out to club members, make an extra effort to listen to their needs, andmeet them (especially emerging Lions leaders) to further their leadership development in ways thatunlock potential, creativity and sense of purpose. Well-trained members, most likely, will continueto develop as future leaders, thus helping to ensure the long-term viability of the organization. This

is something that every Lion leader in a position of servitude can help with by empowering, energizing and connecting -"touching the hearts” of those who volunteer with them. Collectively, it will inspire them to become great servant leaders.

Finally yet importantly, Stephen M.R. Covey, former CEO of the Covey Leadership Center stated, “You do serve, but it stillrequires the other dimensions of leadership—character and competence. Competence means that the leader has a track recordof high ability and achieving results, with skills that are relevant. Character means that results and accomplishments are achievedwith integrity and ethics.” Ultimately, we need to go out of our way, take the necessary extra step, look forward, and explorewhat impact servant leadership could potentially have on the future of leadership within our organization.

Go to www.lionsclubs.org, Resources and then you canchoose by the many subjects offered for your club and your members.

PDG Greg Gilliam, Area GATLeader from Missouri will provide valuable information regarding building a vision for a better Lions Club and PCC DebWeaverling and Ron will conduct training that will enhance your knowledge titled Leadership Theory: Red Teaming andGroup Think Mitigation in Lions. I have waited 30years for this WIN and I am so excited and happy. I continue to wear my KC Chief’s stuff on weekendsto show my true love for this football team. The parade was great too! I cannot wait for football seasonto start again.

CELEBRATING OUR COMMUNITYThe KANSAS CITY CHIEFS give us a reason to celebrate, a reason to come together as a community.Lions, let’s “opt-in” as in VDG Rick’s article. Let’s “opt-in” to have that Mahomes mindset. “We haveheart,” Mahomes said. "We never give up and those guys around us, the leaders on the team, have thatmindset that we never give up." Lion Clubs can be moved along with that mind-set, not only by ourleaders, but also by the collaboration of all the efforts of each member and meaningful connectionwithin our communities. Using wit and wisdom, let’s implement the whole-club approach andenergize every facet.  Vivian DeClements, Editor Kansas Lions District 17A

LIONS Make a Difference Everyday,Everywhere

2019-2020 Lions Global Service Projects Diabetes Environment Pediatric Cancer Hunger Vision

February 20, 2020 Here’s the number of people served in each of the Global Service Categories:

Diabetes Environment Children’s Cancer Hunger Vision Other 1,465(+100) 14,661(+0) 164 (+0) 13,908(+2771) 29,510(+1795) 34,898 (+288)

41 more projects = total 331 service projects 734 more hours of service= 6,171 hours of volunteer service

4,955 more people = 94,606 people served

Emergency Diabetic Kit Project Update 325+ kits have been placed in schools in District 17-A!

On February 12th, the Shawnee Lions received a thank you note from Marilyn Logan, the nurse at Mill Creek ElementarySchool in Lenexa who also requested 10 more Kits. Here is a part of that note:

NOTE: What about considering other places such as community centers, shelters and public buildings where a similaremergency might occur? The instructions (flowchart) describing symptoms, as well as the snacks, would assess thesituation and provide a guide for immediate assistance.

Contact me if your club would like to assemble the Emergency Diabetic Kits at the Convention for distribution in YOURcommunity.

PDG Carleen Rajala, Global Service Chair [email protected]

“And amazingly, just 8 days after you dropped off several of the kits, one of our staff members whohas diabetes was in the staff lounge and experienced a very low life threatening blood sugar.Fortunately, other staff members in the lounge were aware, observed the teacher’s unusualbehavior, and was able to grab an Emergency Kit immediately to start administering much neededjuice and other snacks that were in the Kit.Fortunately, this teacher began recovering quickly and soon the blood sugar returned to normal. The quick response was definitely in large part due to the accessibility of your Diabetic EmergencyKit.Thank you SO very much.”
