A Message to ParentsDear Parents:

We live in a selfish society among self-centered people, children and youth. What atremendous challenge lies before usChristian parents to guard our childrenfrom the “leaven” of selfishness. This quar-ter, as we watch our Saviour working untir-ingly for others, let us lift the eyes of ourchildren from themselves to the unselfishlife of Jesus Christ.

Why is it important for our children tolearn to be thoughtful of others, and for-getful of self? “Love, the basis of creationand of redemption, is the basis of true edu-cation.” —Counsels to Parents, Teachers andStudents, p. 32. “The law of love calls for thedevotion of body, mind, and soul to the ser-vice of God and our fellow men. And thisservice, while making us a blessing to oth-ers, brings the greatest blessing to our-selves. Unselfishness underlies all truedevelopment. Through unselfish service wereceive the highest culture of every faculty.”—Ibid. We can tell our children that whenthey learn to be unselfish, they will have asharp mind and happy heart.

By God’s grace, let us demonstrate tothem true, unselfish service by doingunselfish deeds for our spouses, neighborsand other church members. The best wayto teach them the meaning of this princi-ple, “none of us liveth to himself, and no

man dieth to himself”(Romans 14:7), is by ourexample. If we do this, Godwill awaken in our childrenan ambition to cheerfullyhelp to serve others.

“The parents andteachers who by wiseinstruction, in a calm, decided manner, accustom children to thinkof and care for others, will help them toovercome their selfishness and will closethe door against many temptations. Angelsof God will cooperate with these faithfulinstructors. Angels are not commissionedto do this work themselves; but they willgive strength and efficiency to those who, inthe fear of God, seek to train the young toa life of usefulness.” —Ibid., pp. 148, 149.Victory over temptation in general and self-ishness in particular, a sharp mind andhappiness, are some of the wonderful bene-fits that we and our children can reap asthey learn to die to self and live for Jesusand others.

Let us keep looking for instructions fromour Master Teacher, who came to this worldnot to be served but to serve. May we inspireour children to follow in His footsteps.

The Rich, FoolishFarmer

SundayMemory Verse:

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart bealso.” Luke 12:34.

Bury the HatchetLarry and Don had been quarreling all afternoon. At last,

their father said to them, “I think it’s time for you to bury thehatchet.” “Bury the hatchet? Where is the hatchet?” wonderedthe boys. Father explained, “The expression ‘bury the hatchet’comes to us from the Indians. It means, we are not going tobother any more about old quarrels. The Indians really buriedtheir hatchets, tomahawks, knives, and war clubs when theywere ready to make peace.”

Don spoke first. “Well, even if I don’t have a hatchet, I guessI’ve been using very sharp words with you, Larry.” “Oh well, I wasjust as bad,” said Larry. Don, the older brother had a greatidea. “Let’s pretend we are Indians and let’s bury our mean-word hatchets.” “Let’s do it,” said Larry. Father was glad thatafter the “hatchet burying,” there was quiet and peace again.

Do you fight with your brother or sister sometimes?Although we love our brother or sister, we may sometimesquarrel with them. Even in the time of Jesus, brothers and sis-

ters would get into fights. One day anunhappy brother came to see Jesus.

He asked Him, “Teacher, can you tellmy brother not to be selfish, andto divide the inheritance with me?”What would Jesus tell him? ❖

MondayJesus Reads the Heart

Do you know why this brother came to see Jesus? His fatherhad died and had left him and his brother the house and somemoney. We call this an inheritance. In Jewish families, the oldestboy received two times more of his father’s inheritance than hisyounger brothers. The brother who came to Jesus felt that it wasnot fair that his older brother should get more of his father’smoney and land. He had seen how the people always listened toJesus. “Maybe,” he thought to himself, “Jesus can talk to myolder brother and he will listen also.”

Jesus could read the mind of this selfish young man. AlthoughJesus had talked to him about salvation, he had cared moreabout getting rich than going to heaven. Jesus told him, “It is notMy job to be your judge. Be careful that you are not greedy. Thereare other things that are more important than being rich andhaving lots of land, houses, and money.” Jesus could have fixedthe quarrel between the two brothers, but He knew that both ofthem loved money too much. So He told this unhappy brother, “Itis not My job to fix your quarrel. I came to teach people how to besaved and to get ready for heaven.” To help thisselfish brother see how bad it is tolove money, Jesus toldhim the story of therich farmer. ❖

Lesson Helps: Luke 12:14, 15; Christ’sObject Lessons, p. 254.

Questions:1. What did Jesus tell

the young man? Whocame to ask His help?

2. Why didn’t Jesus wantto fix the quarrelbetween the twobrothers?

How about you: When you get in a fight

with your brother or sis-ter, do you make thingsright yourself or do youcry to Mom or Dad forhelp?

Learn to makepeace with your brotheror sister.

Parents’ Corner:“Jesus could have told

this man just what wasright. He knew the rightin the case; but thebrothers were in a quar-rel because both werecovetous. Christ virtuallysaid, It is not My work tosettle controversies ofthis kind. He came foranother purpose, topreach the gospel, andthus to arouse men to asense of eternal reali-ties.” —Christ’s ObjectLessons, p. 254.

TuesdayThe Story of the Rich Farmer

“A long time ago,” Jesus said, “there lived a rich farmerwho had much land. He had fruit, vegetables, and grains grow-ing on his farm. There were big barns where he stored the foodthat he picked. But one year, his farm produced so much foodthat there was no room in his barns to store it all. ‘Whereshall I put all this food?’ he wondered. The rich farmer becameproud, and he said to himself, ‘I must have more room for allthis food. If I store all this wheat, I will be richer than everbefore. I will tear down my old barns and build new, larger ones.In them I will put all my crops and my farm tools. Then I won’thave to work for many years. I will be able to rest and haveplenty to eat and drink. Best of all, I will do as I please andhave a good time for many years to come.’

“As the rich farmer was making these selfish plans, some-one was watching him. God in heaven could see the largefields of wheat, the fruit and the vineyards. Each day Godhad lovingly sent the sunshine to shineon his farm. He had sent rain fromheaven to water his vineyards, orchards, and gardens. Who do youthink gave the farmer the strengthto work in his garden every day?God did. If God did not give himthe sunshine, rain and strength towork, he would have no farm. Notonce did the farmer thank God forall these wonderful gifts. How sadGod was that the farmer forgotall about Him and acted as ifeverything was his own!” ❖

Lesson Helps: Luke 12:16-19; Christ’sObject Lessons, pp. 255,256.

Questions:1. Why did the farmer want

to tear down his oldbarns and make biggerones?

2. What did he forget as hewas thinking about hisriches?

How About You: Are you happy with the

toys you have, or are youalways asking Mom and Dadto buy you more? What aresome gifts Jesus gives youevery day? Do you rememberto thank Him?

Be content with whatyou have.

Parents’ Corner: “This man’s aims were no

higher than those of thebeasts that perish. He livedas if there were no God, noheaven, no future life; as ifeverything he possessedwere his own, and he owednothing to God or man. Thepsalmist described this richman when he wrote, ‘The foolhath said in his heart, Thereis no God.’ Ps. 14:1.” —Christ’s Object Lessons, pp. 257, 258.

WednesdayThe Homeless Mothers and Children

Did you ever go to the city and see homeless mothers withchildren walking around the streets? They carry all their belong-ings in a few bags or push them in a grocery cart. Sometimesthey stand in front of a supermarket and hold a sign that says“Need Food.” We are sad to see poor, hungry children, so we liketo buy them some food or give them some money. This richfarmer had also seen poor and homeless children. He knew thatsome of them had no fathers and that their mothers couldn’tmake much money, but he did not care to help them. These poorpeople had asked him for help, but he would not listen to their

cry. Since he had so much, he could have easily given themfood for their hungry stomachs and clothesto wear. How good he would have felt to seetheir happy faces, praising God for his kind-

ness. But the farmer had closed his ears totheir cries, and said to himself, “Now youhave much food and money saved up formany years, take it easy—eat, drink, andhave a good time.”

As God looked at the selfish farmer, Hesaw that He would always be selfish. Hewould never be a help to anyone in the world,so He said to him, “You are a foolish man.Tonight you are going to die. Then who willhave your riches?” After Jesus told thisstory, He turned to the people and said,“This will happen to everyone who wants tobe rich in this world and not rich towardGod.” ❖

Lesson Helps: Luke 12:20, 21; Christ’sObject Lessons, pp. 257,258.

Questions:1. What should the rich

farmer have done withthe extra food he had?

2. Since he didn’t wantto share his richeswith the poor, whathappened to him?

How about you: Are you rich toward

Jesus? Do you give someof your good toys, booksand food to poor chil-dren? Or do you give themthe junky, broken toysthat you don’t want?

Help those who areless fortunate than your-self.

Parents’ Corner:“But ‘the wisdom of

this world is foolishnesswith God.’ 1 Cor. 3:19.While the rich man islooking forward to yearsof enjoyment, the Lord ismaking far differentplans. The messagecomes to this unfaithfulsteward, ‘Thou fool, thisnight thy soul shall berequired of thee.’ Here isa demand that moneycannot supply. The wealthhe has treasured canpurchase no reprieve. Inone moment that whichhe has toiled through hiswhole life to securebecomes worthless tohim. ‘Then whose shallthose things be whichthou hast provided?’ Hisbroad fields and well-filledgranaries pass from underhis control. ‘He heapeth upriches, and knoweth notwho shall gather them.’ Ps.39:6.” —Christ’s ObjectLessons, p. 258.

ThursdayYou Can Be Rich

Did you ever wish that your father and mother were richand had a lot of money? Maybe you have wished to live in a bighouse with ponies and lots of toys. Some boys and girls thinkthat if they could go to the store and buy anything they like, they would be so happy. But let me tell you a secret, boys andgirls. A big house with nice furniture and lots of toys wouldnot make you happy. The love of Jesus in our hearts is the onlything that can make us truly happy. With Jesus in our hearts,we will love to share what we have with others. Then, if Jesusgives us money, we will use it to help the poor and the sick, and also to send missionaries to China, Africa, and aroundthe world.

How sad it is that some Christian moms and dads lovemoney more than Jesus. They work hard because they want tobe rich. Sometimes they have no time to go to prayer meetingand church. How do you think Jesus feels about that? Yes, Heis very sad. He does not want anyone to love money so muchthat they will forget about Him. To teach us not to love money,Jesus gave us the story of the rich, foolish farmer. Here aresome neat ways that you and your family can be rich: Be richin little acts of kindness, little words of love, little smiles thatbring sunshine to others, and then you will be the happiest boyor girl in your neighborhood. ❖

Lesson Helps: 1 John 5:11, 12; Christ’sObject Lessons, p. 259.

Questions:1. Why did Jesus tell us the

story of the rich farmer?2. If Jesus gives us riches,

what should we use itfor?

How About You: What are some things you

can do to be rich? What willmake you the happiest boyor girl in the world?

Be rich in kind, helpfuldeeds, and words of love.

Parents’ Corner:“To live for self is to per-

ish. Covetousness, thedesire of benefit for self’ssake, cuts the soul off fromlife. It is the spirit of Satanto get, to draw to self. It isthe spirit of Christ to give,to sacrifice self for thegood of others. ‘And this isthe record, that God hathgiven to us eternal life, andthis life is in His Son. Hethat hath the Son hath life;and he that hath not theSon of God hath not life.’1 John 5:11, 12.” —Christ’sObject Lessons, p. 259.

FridayMade to Last

“Sharon is so lucky,” Nick thought, as he plopped down on thefront steps of his house. He sighed as he stretched his legs out infront of him. Sharon’s family was wealthy, and Sharon had all sortsof neat things: a swimming pool, lots of neat toys, and even herown computer! She bragged a lot, though, and swished her long, black hair around all the time. And just now, Sharon had shown himthe special set of building blocks that he had been wanting. “Lookwhat I’ve got,” she said smugly.

“Some friend!” Nick thought. She knew he’d been trying to getthat set for a long time.

The clanging of dishes told Nick that his mom was setting thetable for supper. He went inside. “Hi, Mom,” he murmured, and shelooked up. “It’s not fair,” complained Nick. “Sharon gets everythingshe wants. She even gets everything I want. It’s so upsetting. Shehas so many special things. That’s OK, but she doesn’t have towave it in front of my face!”

“Sharon does seem to have a lot of special treasures,” agreedMom, “but will any of them last very long?” Nick shrugged. “Doesshe have any treasures in heaven that can’t be taken away orstolen?” continued Mom.

Nick knew that all the things that Sharon possessed would getlost, stolen, broken, or worn out—including the building blocks. “Youknow, I’m not sure Sharon even knows about heavenly treasures,” hesaid.

“She could,” suggested Mom.Nick smiled. He could hear Sharon calling him. “Yeah,” he

agreed, “like right now.”Many people store up treasures on this earth. Bugs and mice

chew holes in clothes, books, and plenty of other things. Firesdestroy many homes every year, and the people in those homessometimes lose everything they have. There are also burglars whorob them when they aren’t aware, and rust and decay do their partalso.

Jesus taught that we should lay up treasure in heaven wherenothing can harm it. You might ask, “How can I lay up treasure inheaven?” By giving your heart to Jesus, and learning not to be self-ish. Everything you do for someone else, it is as if you have done itfor Jesus. ❖

“But lay upfor yourselvestreasures inheaven, whereneither mothnor rust dothcorrupt, andwhere thievesdo not breakthrough norsteal.”Matthew 6:20.

The Story of a KindTraveler

SundayMemory Verse:

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, andwith all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” Luke10:27.

What Should I Do to Be Saved? If Jesus would come to visit your house, what would you like

to ask Him? Would you ask Him to give you a special toy? Wouldyou ask Him to help you be more obedient and kind, or would youask Him to take you to heaven with Him? When Jesus lived onthis earth, anyone could just walk up to Him and ask Him what-ever he or she liked. One day, while Jesus was teaching the peo-ple, a lawyer came to ask Him a very important question. “Jesus,”he said, “what do I have to do to be saved?” This man honestlywanted to know what he must do to go to heaven.

Jesus asked him, “What do you read in the commandments?”The man answered, “You should love the Lord your God with allyour heart and with all your soul, with all your strength, with allyour mind, and your neighbor as thyself.” “You gave the rightanswer,” Jesus said. “Go and do this and you will live.” Perhapsthe lawyer thought, “I really don’t like poor Farmer Luke who livesdown the street from me. And Mr. Timothy is such a nosy neigh-bor. He’s always coming over.”

As the lawyer listened to Jesus, he felt that he did not lovehis neighbor like himself. So he asked, “Who is my neighbor?”Instead of answering his question, Jesus told him a story of akind man who helped his neighbor. Do you know the name of thisstory? ❖

Lesson Helps: Luke 10:25-29; TheDesire of Ages, pp. 497,498.

Questions:1. What two things do we

have to do to besaved?

2. What does it mean tolove God with all ourheart and strength?

How About You: Do you love others as

much as yourself?

Love God and yourneighbor.

Parents’ Corner:“The lawyer was not

satisfied with the posi-tion and works of thePharisees. He had beenstudying the Scriptureswith a desire to learntheir real meaning. Hehad a vital interest inthe matter, and hadasked in sincerity, ‘Whatshall I do?’ ” —TheDesire of Ages, p. 497.

Questions:1. What did the priest do

when he saw the poor, wounded man?

2. What did the Levite do?What was he thinking?

How About You: What do you do when you

see your little brother orsister get hurt?

Treat others the wayyou want them to treat you.

Parents’ Corner:“In journeying from

Jerusalem to Jericho, thetraveler had to passthrough a portion of thewilderness of Judea. Theroad led down a wild, rockyravine, which was infestedby robbers, and was oftenthe scene of violence. It washere that the traveler wasattacked, stripped of allthat was valuable, woundedand bruised, and left halfdead by the wayside. As helay thus, the priest camethat way; but he merelyglanced toward the woundedman. Then the Leviteappeared. Curious to knowwhat had happened, hestopped and looked at thesufferer. He was convictedof what he ought to do; butit was not an agreeableduty. He wished that he hadnot come that way, so thathe need not have seen thewounded man. He persuadedhimself that the case wasno concern of his.” —TheDesire of Ages, p. 499.

2 MondayRobbers Attack a Man

Jesus liked to tell stories, but the stories He told were notfairy tales. They were true stories that happened to real peo-ple. Listen to the story He told the lawyer: “A man was walkingone day from Jerusalem to Jericho. The road was lonely andfar away from any houses. There were great big rocks andcaves along both sides of the road where robbers were hidingand waiting for someone to pass by. Suddenly as the manwalked by the rocks, some thieves jumped out and caught him.Robbing the poor traveler of all his money, they took off hisclothes and beat him. Leaving him almost dead, they ranaway.

“Soon after, a priest was walking home fromthe temple on that same road. This priestpretended to love God, but when he saw thispoor, hurt man he turned his head and walkedto the other side of the road. After a while, aLevite who also worked in the temple came by.Being curious, he stopped to look at the poorman. The Levite knew he should help him, buthe did not feel like it. In his mind he thought, ‘Iwish I had not walked home this way. Then Iwould not have seen this wretched man.’ ”

God had allowed the priest and the Leviteto walk along the same road where the suffer-ing man lay, so He could see if they really lovedtheir neighbor. The angels watched these suppos-edly faithful Christians as they ignored the poor, bleeding man. How sad they were that they didnot help him. ❖

TuesdayThe Good Samaritan

As the wounded man lay in the dirt, too sick and weak tomove, he must have thought, “Won’t anyone help me?” Suddenly,he heard some footsteps. Another traveler was coming along theroad. He was a stranger from another country called Samaria, aheathen man who did not know about Jesus. When he saw thepoor, bleeding man, he knelt down beside him, took some oil fromhis bag, and put it on his wounds. Next he wrapped his woundswith a cloth. Gently, he picked him up and put him on his donkey.Slowly he walked beside him, holding him so he would not fall. After

a while, they came to a place like a motel. TheSamaritan carried the sick man into a

nice, clean room and took care of himall night.

The next morning, he had to leave,so he told the motel keeper, “Here issome money. Take care of this sickman for me. Let him stay here untilhe is well and able to travel. If youspend more money than this, I willpay you when I come again.”

After Jesus had told the story, helooked at the lawyer and asked, “Which of these three men were goodneighbors to the man who wasrobbed by thieves?” The lawyeranswered, “The one who helped him.”Now Jesus said to him, “You go andhelp others in the same way.” ❖

2. How did he treat thehurt man?

Parents’ Corner:“Thus the question,

‘Who is my neighbor?’ isforever answered. Christhas shown that ourneighbor does not meanmerely one of the churchor faith to which webelong. It has no refer-ence to race, color, orclass distinction. Ourneighbor is every personwho needs our help. Ourneighbor is every soulwho is wounded andbruised by the adversary. Our neighbor is everyonewho is the property ofGod.” —The Desire ofAges, p. 503.

WednesdayWho Is Your Neighbor?

Now that you heard the story of the Good Samaritan, can you figure out who is your neighbor? Any person who needsyour help is your neighbor. It does not matter if he is white, black, brown, or yellow. It does not matter if he goes to churchor not. It does not matter if he or she is young or old. All thatmatters is that they need help. When we are kind to others,Jesus counts it as if we were being kind to Him.

One boy, after reading the story of the Good Samaritan, wanted to be helpful just like him. He could not find anyonewho was in big trouble like the man in the story, but he did findhis little brother crying because he could not find his cap. Sohe found it for him and made him happy. Another day, he tooksome flowers to a sick boy. One morning as he was going toschool he saw a baby bird on the ground. The wind had beenblowing so hard that it had shaken the little bird out of itsnest. It was not old enough to fly, so he picked it up, climbedthe tree and put it back in its cozy nest. What are somethings you can do to be a good Samaritan in your home andneighborhood? ❖

ThursdayAnother Good Samaritan

Has Mother or Father ever told you a story that had twodifferent meanings? The story of the Good Samaritan hasanother meaning besides the one we just told you. Do you knowwho is the poor, bruised man in the story? It is you and I. Satan, the bad robber, has attacked us. He has stolen everything wehave, beaten us, and left us to die. Jesus, the Good Samaritan, saw us suffering and felt sorry for us. So, He left His throne inheaven and came down to our rescue. He healed our wounds, took off His white robe and covered us. At last He died on thecross to save us.

Today Jesus tells us, “Just as I came down to rescue you,so I want you to rescue othersfrom sin. I want you to loveeach other as much as Ihave loved you. If any ofyou say, I love God whileyou hate your brother, youare a liar. For if you can’tlove your brother whom yousee, how can you love Godwhom you can’t see?” ❖

Lesson Helps: John 15:17; 13:34; 1 John4:20, 12; The Desire ofAges, pp. 503, 504.

Questions:1. Who is the good

Samaritan, the robber, and the man in thestory?

2. How does Jesus wantus to treat our brother, sister, friend, or anyother person for whomHe died?

How About You: Do you say, “I love

Jesus, but I can’t love mybrother when he is meanto me”? What is wrongwith such thoughts?

When you love yourbrother, you are also lov-ing God.

manifest toward ourbrethren declares what is our spirit toward God.The love of God in theheart is the only springof love toward our neigh-bor.” —The Desire ofAges, p. 505.

Friday The Bully

Billy was the worst boy in the village; his father had spoiled him.“Don’t check the boy,” he would say to his wife, “you will crush the

manhood right out of Billy.”And so he grew up to be the terror of the neighborhood. He would

do his tricks on the old, weak, and crippled people. He often made fun of one poor woman, who was bent by old age from

taking care of her sick son. Every day she heard his mean words, becauseshe had to draw water from the well next to the boys’ school.

She never gave him any rebuke until one day she said with tears inher eyes, “Go home, child, and read the story of Elisha and the two bears.”

“I don’t care about Elisha,” Billy said. That day, another boy named Charles heard the mean words.

“Shame on you, Billy,” said Charles. “Shame! Shame!” And to show hissympathy, Charles ran to help the poor woman. “Let me get the waterfor you, ma’am,” and he gently took the bucket from her hand. “I will nowbring you water every day, so you need not come for it.”

“God bless you! Oh, bless you!” she exclaimed as she wiped awaythe tears.

Billy was reported to the school principal, and he received detentionfor one week. He couldn’t go on breaks, but as soon as the teacher becamevery busy with his work, Billy sneaked out. “Now let him punish me if he can,”he yelled in rebellion as he ran backwards, throwing up his arms. All of asudden his shouting stopped; there was a plunge, and a horrible scream.

The well beside the school was being repaired, and someone had notcovered it properly. So Billy fell in. There was not much water in the well, orhe would have drowned. Charles quickly went for some rope, and ran back tothe well to finish his rescue. In no time he came back up with the deformedand apparently dead Billy. The pale face of the wicked boy filled the boyswith horror, and in perfect silence they carried him to the house of thepoor, old lady which was nearby. She had also seen him fall.

Now the boy who had made fun of her, was lying on her own bed. Sheprayed for him while tenderly ministering to him. Soon the doctor arrived, and did what he could.

When poor Billy woke up at last, he was told that his back was broken. When he was well enough, he begged for the poor, old lady’s forgiveness, which she gladly gave. But forever after, he always had a hunched back.

Boys and girls, remember to treat others, especially older people, withthe same respect and courtesy you would like. Jesus is also happy when weare kind to those who hurt us. ❖

Two Brothers WhoWanted to Be First

SundayMemory Verse:

“And whosoever will be chief among you, let him beyour servant.” Matthew 20:27.

Just Thinking About ThemselvesDo you like saying good-bye to people you love? Of course

you don’t, and neither did Jesus. The time was coming whenHe would have to leave His disciples and be crucified.Soon, many sad things were going to happen toHim and His dear friends. Jesus wanted to prepareHis disciples for what was coming so they wouldnot be afraid. He told them how wickedpriests would take Him and condemn Him todie. Then they would mock Him and beat Him,and at last crucify Him on a cross. But Hesaid, “That will not be the end, for after lyingin the grave three days, I will rise again.”

The disciples could not understand whyanyone would want to kill their loving Jesus. They kept thinking, “That can’t be true. Jesuswill soon set up His kingdom in Jerusalemand then He will be king. After that, all of uswill have very important jobs next to Jesus.Everyone will respect us.” How sad Jesus wasto see His disciples thinking such selfishthoughts! ❖

MondayTwo Selfish Brothers

James and John were among the first disciples who cameand followed Jesus. Gladly they left their mother and father, their home and friends to be His disciples. Everywhere Jesuswent they came along. They walked, talked, ate, and even slept in

the same house with Jesus. Often when they wereafraid, Jesus would help them be brave. Whenthey were upset, Jesus would make them

happy; when they were hurting, He wouldtake away their pain. James and Johnloved Jesus very much, but John, theyoungest brother, loved Jesus themost. Wherever Jesus was standing,John would stand next to Him. IfJesus was sitting, John would leanupon His chest.

The mother of James andJohn also loved Jesus. She glad-ly gave Him of her own money. But as any mother who lovesher boys, she wanted them to

have the best things in life. Oneday, she told her boys, “Why don’tyou ask Jesus if you can sit nextto Him in His kingdom?” Thebrothers liked the idea, so theywent together with their moth-er to talk to Jesus.

“What do you want me to dofor you?” Jesus asked them. Themother said, “When you are king,

can you give orders that my twoboys sit on your right hand and onyour left?” What would Jesus tellthis mother and two brothers? ❖

TuesdayJesus Is Patient With James and John

What would you do if your little brother, sister or friendasked you to give them your favorite toy? Would you say,“No way, you can’t have that.” Or would you kindly tell themwhy you couldn’t let them have it? Jesus was patient withJames and John and their mother. He knew that these twobrothers loved Him, but it made Him sad that they were soselfish. Jesus left His beautiful home in heaven to comedown to our world to save sinners. He did not pick thenicest place to live. He went where He could do the mostgood, among the poor and sick. All day long He healed thepeople and taught them how to be saved. Jesus was so poorthat when night came He had no place to sleep unlessfriends invited Him to their house.

Jesus did not tell James and John, “You are selfish. What makes you think that you are better than the otherdisciples?” But kindly He said to them, “You don’t know whatyou are asking. Can you drink the cup I am going to drink? Can you be bap-tized with thebaptism that Iam baptized?”What Jesusmeant was, “Canyou suffer and becrucified like me?”The two brotherssaid, “Yes, wecan.” Now Jesussaid to them, “Iwill let you sufferwith Me, but Icannot let you sitnext to Me on Mythrone. MyFather will decidewho will share Mythrone.” ❖

the question of Jamesand John?

2. Why wasn’t He upset atthem?

How About You: Are you kind and patient

with selfish people like Jesuswas?

Be a peacemaker.

Parents’ Corner: “Jesus bears tenderly

with [James and John], notrebuking their selfishness inseeking preference abovetheir brethren. He readstheir hearts, He knows thedepth of their attachmentto Him. Their love is not amere human affection;though defiled by the earth-liness of its human channel,it is an outflowing from thefountain of His own redeem-ing love. He will not rebuke, but deepen and purify. Hesaid, ‘Are ye able to drink ofthe cup that I shall drink of,and to be baptized with thebaptism that I am baptizedwith?’ They recall His myste-rious words, pointing to trialand suffering, yet answerconfidently, ‘We are able.’They would count it highesthonor to prove their loyaltyby sharing all that is tobefall their Lord.” —TheDesire of Ages, p. 548.

WednesdayThe Jealous Ten

Have you ever been jealous of someone who had somethingbetter than you? Jealousy is an ugly feeling we must overcomewith the help of Jesus. Do you remember who was the first jeal-ous being ever to exist? It was Lucifer. We do not want to be likehim. As boys and girls who love Jesus, we want to be unselfish, loving, and kind.

When the other ten disciples heard how James and Johnwanted to sit next to Jesus on His throne, they were veryangry. Do you know why? Because they also wanted to sit nextto Him. The ten were so jealous of James and John that theywere about to have a big argument with them. But Jesus spokekindly to them, and said, “The heathens, who don’t know Godlike to boss each other around, but you, my friends, should notdo that. If any one of you wants to be the most important, lethim be your servant. And whoever wants to be first, let him beyour slave. I am the Son of God, and I did not come to beserved, but I came to serve others. This is why I want to givemy life to save you.”

Did you hear that, boys and girls? Jesus was a servant whenHe lived on this earth. A servant is someone who spends most ofhis time helping other people. How wonderful that we can servelike Jesus. So when you wake up in the morning, ask Jesus in your

prayer, “How doyou want me toserve my moth-er, father, brother, and sis-ter today?” Youcan be sure thatHe will tell youexactly what todo. ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 20:24-28; TheDesire of Ages, pp. 550,551.

Questions:1. Why were the ten dis-

ciples angry at Jamesand John?

2. What did Jesus saywe should do if otherswant to be first?

How About You: Can you think of some

ways to be a servant inyour home, church, orneighborhood?

Be a servant.

Parents’ Corner: “Children are to be

educated to deny them-selves. At one time, whenI was speaking inNashville, the Lord gaveme light on this matter. It flashed upon me withgreat force that in everyhome there should be aself-denial box, and thatinto this box the childrenshould be taught to puttheir pennies they wouldotherwise spend forcandy and other unnec-essary things.

“You will find that asthe children place theirpennies in these boxes, they will gain a greatblessing. . . . Every mem-ber of the family, fromthe oldest to theyoungest, should prac-tice self-denial.” —ChildGuidance, p. 132.

ThursdayThe Boy With Bad Manners

One afternoon, mother took Charlie with her to visit afriend, Mrs. Jason. As soon as they came inside the house,Charlie went to the living room. Running to the best rockingchair, he began to rock as hard as he could. Mother said,“Charlie, get up and let Mrs. Jason have her chair.” Do youthink Charlie obeyed his mother? No, indeed he did not. “I don’twant to give up this chair,” he said. “I want to rock myself.”When Mother tried to take him out, he began to scream.

Mrs. Jason invited them to stay for dinner. As soon asthey sat at the table, Charlie saw a dish of peaches andbananas on the table, and he began to say loudly, “Mother, Iwant that big peach. Give me that biggest peach, Mother!”

“No,” said his mother. “You should not ask for it. After awhile you will get one, but it will not be the biggest.” Charliebegan to cry aloud, “But I want it now, and I want the biggestone.” Do you think that is the polite wayfor a boy or girl to act? Boys andgirls who love Jesus will never askfor the biggest apple, or thebiggest cookie. Neither will theytake the best chair in the roomand sit in it all the time. Anyboy or girl who acts that wayis selfish. Children shouldalways give Father and Motheror an older person the bestchair. Those who in heaven willsit the nearest to King Jesuswill first have to learn to beunselfish while here on thisearth. ❖

Lesson Helps: Child Guidance, pp. 131-133.

Questions:1. What are some bad man-

ners that Charlie had?2. How did he show his self-

ishness?

How About You: What are some selfish

things you have been doing? What are some unselfishthings you can do in theirplace?

Be polite.

Parents’ Corner:“Many children have

inherited selfishness fromtheir parents, but parentsshould seek to uproot everyfiber of this evil tendencyfrom their natures. Christgave many reproofs tothose who were covetousand selfish. Parents shouldseek, on the first exhibitionof selfish traits of charac-ter, whether in their pres-ence, or when in associationwith other children, torestrain and uproot thesetraits from the character oftheir children.” —ChildGuidance, p. 132.

FridaySelfish Anna

Mother was busy trying to finish ironing and the baby wasfussing. So she called Anna to come and take care of the baby alittle while. Anna was very interested in a book just then, andsaid: “Yes Mother, I’ll be there in a little bit.”

A little later, Mother called again. Anna again answered, “YesMother, as soon as I finish this page.” But Mother had to call athird time before Anna put the book away. And then she did notdo it happily. Yet, only that morning she had been calling her babybrother sweet names, and telling him how much she loved him. Now, what made Anna so slow to take care of him when he wasn’tfeeling well?

Every day Anna would tell her Mother that she loved her, andthat she wanted to help her when she was big enough. Why wasAnna so slow to obey when Mother needed her help? I will tell youthe reason. Anna was selfish. She would rather read her bookthan to help her tired mother or baby brother. When she at lastcame to care for her brother, she picked him up with a jerk thatmade him cry. Mother had to stop her work to quiet him.

Anna was a bad example. She made others sad by beingselfish. And if we are selfish, we will be bad examples and makeothers sad. ❖

The Supper NobodyWanted

SundayMemory Verse:

“Go out into the highways and hedges, and compelthem to come in, that my house may be filled.” Luke14:23.

Guests Coming for DinnerHave you ever been invited to someone’s house for Sabbath

lunch? We like to go and eat at our friends’ homes, don’t we?Jesus also liked to eat lunch with the poor and rich who invitedhim over. One Sabbath day, a Pharisee asked Jesus to come forlunch with some of his other rich friends. As they were eating,Jesus told His host, “When you make a dinner at your house, don’t invite just your family and friends or rich neighbors, forthey will invite you back to their house. But when you make a din-ner, invite the poor, the crippled, the blind and the old people. Then God will bless you, for these people cannot pay you back. But don’t worry, you will be paid back when I come again.”

The Pharisee and his friends did not like what Jesus told them.Do you know why? They did not feel like inviting the poor and crip-pled people. So since they didn’t want to listen to Jesus’ words, Hetold them a story about “The Supper Nobody Wanted.” ❖

Lesson Helps: Luke 14:1-14; Christ’s ObjectLessons, pp. 219-221.

MondayThe Supper Is Ready

Have you ever helped Mom make lots of food on Friday for aspecial Sabbath lunch? Maybe you set the table with a specialtablecloth, Sabbath plates, and silverware. When Mother putthe food on the table, everything looked so beautiful. Youwere all anxiously waiting for the guests to arrive. But whatif the guests never came? You would have been disappointed, wouldn’t you?

The story Jesus told at the dinner table was about a manwho made a great big supper for his guests. He had spent alot of money and time to make a big party for them. The ser-vants set the most beautiful table with pretty tablecloths, fine china, silverware, and glasses. We can guess that theyhad soup, potatoes, beans, vegetables, and the best desserts. When the time came for the dinner to begin, no one came.Just think of that, not even one guest! So the man of thehouse sent his servant to call the guests at their houses.Knocking at the first door, the servant said, “Come, for allthings are now ready.” “Sorry, I just bought a piece of land andI must go and see it. Please, excuse me to your master,” saidthe man. The servant went to the next house and said, “Cometo the great supper, for all things are now ready.” The secondguest also had an excuse, “I have just bought five oxen and Ineed to try them out. Please, have me excused.” Excuses, excuses, and what poor excuses! Do you make excuses whenyou don’t feel like doing something? ❖

TuesdayNo One Wants to Come

How do you think the servant felt after two of the guestssaid, “No, we cannot come to your master’s supper?” He musthave been pretty upset, don’t you think so? As he knocked on thethird door, he must have thought, “I know this one will come forsure.” But the third guest said, “Sorry, I just got married andcannot come.” The servant went back to his master and report-ed, “None of your guests want to come to the supper.”

How do you think this master felt that no one cared for hisinvitation to the dinner? He was very upset, for he had workedhard to prepare the supper for his guests. O yes, he was very sadindeed, just like you and I would be if no guests came to theSabbath lunch we prepared. As the master looked at the big, empty dining room and the good food sitting on the long table,he said to his servant, “Go out quickly into the streets and inviteanyone who wants to come to my house for dinner. Bring thepoor people, the homeless, the beggars, the blind and those whocannot walk.” The servant did as he was told, and soon the housewas full of the homeless, beggars, poor children, blind people andeven handicapped people. How happy they all were to be invited tosuch a fancy dinner party. ❖

2. Do you think he didthe right thing?

How About You: What would you do if

Invite everyone tobe saved.

Parents’ Corner“The command given in

the parable, to ‘compelthem to come in,’ hasoften been misinterpret-ed. It has been regardedas teaching that weshould force men toreceive the gospel. But itdenotes rather theurgency of the invitation, and the effectiveness ofthe inducements pre-sented. The gospel neveremploys force in bringingmen to Christ. Its mes-sage is ‘Ho, every onethat thirsteth, come yeto the waters.’ Isa. 55:1.‘The Spirit and the bridesay, Come. . . . Andwhosoever will, let himtake the water of lifefreely.’ Rev. 22:17. Thepower of God’s love andgrace constrains us tocome.” —Christ’s ObjectLessons, p. 235.

Bring More GuestsWhat a sight that must have been to see people in their

dirty street clothes, some barefooted, others with holes intheir pants, coming to the rich man’s house for dinner. Therich man was glad to have them come, for now his food wouldnot be wasted. Again, the servant came to his master andsaid, “Master, I did what you told me to do, but we still havesome empty seats at the dinner table.” Then the master toldhim, “Go out again in the streets, by the freeways, and on thestreet corners and ask the people to come. My house must befull of guests, but you can be sure that none of those firstguests I invited will eat any of my supper.”

Gladly the servant obeyed his master and this time he toldthe street people, “Please come to a special dinner that mymaster has made for you.” Soon the house was full of thepoorest street people. Not a single seat was empty. And howhappy these people were to be invited for a special meal.

In this story, Jesus is the good Master who has made awonderful feast for His people. You have also been invited tothat special dinner. Do you know which food Jesus serves atHis dinner table? He serves us the “Living Bread” which is sal-vation. He invites us all to come and be saved. How sad it isthat some people don’t want to be saved. They would ratherbe doing their own fun and pleasure. We hope you are one ofthose guests who has said Yes to Jesus when He invited youto His supper of salvation. ❖

ThursdayDon’t Make Excuses

Remember the three people who made excuses in the story ?The first man wouldn’t come to the supper because he hadbought a piece of land. The second one wanted to try out his newoxen, while the last one had just gotten a new wife. Jesus wouldhave been glad to have the man’s wife also come to His feast. Hewants us to bring our moms and dads, our brothers and sistersto hear about Him and be saved. All three guests in the storydid not care to come to the dinner. They just cared about theirown things and having a fun time.

What do you think Jesus wants us to learn from this storyof the great supper? You probably guessed it. He does not wantus to make any excuses about why we can’t do this or that. Ihave heard boys say, “I can’t kneel down by my bed at night andpray because I am too tired.” Maybe you know some girls who say,“I can’t learn my memory verses this week, for I have to play.”Other boys and girls have said, “Let’s have a quick worship todayfor I am very hungry.” All these are poor excuses that peoplemake because they don’t feel like doing what God says. If we keepon making excuses, God will not leave us a place at His table ofsalvation. Then Jesus will give our place to others who will appre-ciate it. So don’t make any excuses but say, “Lord Jesus, I amcoming right now.” ❖

ple who make excuseswill go to heaven?

2. Why not?

How About You: What excuses do you

Parents’ Corner: “Christ will impart to

FridayGod’s Little Bread Man

“I am the Bread of Life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger.”These were the words of the Bible verse that Danny’s Sabbath

school teacher gave him one day. As soon as she read them to him andhis friends, he said, “I like this verse. My daddy’s a bread man and hekeeps people from getting hungry.” Danny could hardly wait to talk to hisfather after Sabbath school, to show him his new verse.

“That’s what you do, don’t you, Daddy?” asked Danny after his fatherhad looked at the verse.

“We’ll talk about it when we get home, Danny,” his father said. “It’stime for service to start now.” Danny was especially interested in get-ting home that day, and he and his father talked about the new verse atthe dinner table. Daddy explained that the Bread of Life in the verse wasJesus, and that all who kept Him in their heart and loved Him andobeyed His will would always be satisfied.

“Daddy, can’t I go along with you sometimes on the bread wagon andgive some of these ‘Bread of Life’ verses to your customers?” he askedafter dinner was over.

“Why, son, I think that would be fine,” Daddy told him. “You’ll be sixyears old on Wednesday. I’ll take you along then.” Danny’s big sistermade typewritten copies of the bread verse on five neat, white cards. What a happy birthday that was for Danny! His father pinned the breadverse on each loaf he carried and let him hand the bread at five differ-ent places.

“You don’t need to wait for money,” Dad had told the boy.He didn’t tell him that he gave this bread free at these places

because he knew the people there had little money. Danny found this outlater, and he was proud that his daddy was good to the poor. So Dannywent along on more trips, and every now and then he took a bread versealong with the bread he delivered.

One day when they came to a big house where a rich lady lived, Dannysaid, “I want to take a ‘bread verse’ in there, Daddy.” “All right, Danny, you may do so,” his father told him. So, along with the basket of breadand cakes he took one of the bread verses. And this time the rich ladyherself came to the door and thanked Danny, telling him she thought itwas fine for him to help his father. This pleased Danny very much.

But imagine both Daddy’s and Danny’s surprise to see this lady atchurch on the next Sabbath. Daddy knew that she hadn’t been there fora good many years. He and Danny were glad to learn later that it wasDanny’s “bread verse” that won her back to the church. Although rich inmoney and what money can buy, she had been hungry for bread for hersoul, and Danny’s verse turned out to be that kind of bread. Much othergood came from Danny’s giving Bible verses of different kinds to peopleon the bread route. “Daddy, I’m glad to be a ‘Bread of Life’ bread man,”Danny told him often.

“I am the livingbread whichcame down fromheaven: if anyman eat of thisbread, he shalllive for ever.”John 6:51.

Finding the LostSunday

Memory Verse: “Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presenceof the angels of God over one sinner that repen-teth.” Luke 15:10.

Jesus the Friend of SinnersHave you ever been lost? Maybe you were lost in a store

when Mom went shopping or in the woods when you wentcamping. How did you feel? Scared? Jesus understands allabout lost people and lost things. Many of the people whocame to listen to Him preaching were lost in sin. Some ofthese men and women, were thieves, liars, cheaters, and evenmurderers. Do you know why they came to hear Jesus?Because He told them how much God loved them and wantedto forgive them their sins. As they listened to Jesus theywanted to live better lives. They were so happy when Jesusshowed them how.

While Jesus was showing love and kindness to lost sin-ners, the priests and Pharisees were upset. They made fun ofHim saying, “Look at this man, He is a friend of sinners. Heeven eats with them.” Jesus did not argue with these proud, selfish men. He just told them two stories, which showed thatGod loves sinners as much as He loves the obedient ones. Nomatter how good we think we are, we should never feel that weare better than boys and girls who don’t know Jesus. This ishow the proud Pharisees felt. We need to be humble like theapostle Paul and say with him, “I am the biggest sinner.” ❖

MondayThe Lost Sheep

As Jesus was telling the story of the Lost Sheep, you couldsee on the hills hundreds of grazing sheep. Jesus asked the peo-ple, “If you had one hundred sheep, and one got lost, wouldn’t youleave the ninety and nine and go and find the lost one?” Everyoneagreed that they would go looking for that lost sheep. The shep-herds who were listening to Jesus knew how much they loved theirsheep. If one of them got lost, they would not say, “I have ninetyand nine. I am too busy to look for that one sheep now. Besides,it’s his own fault that he got lost.” A loving shepherd becomesvery upset when even one of his sheep gets lost. Again and againhe counts his flock thinking, “Maybe I made a mistake.” When heis sure that one of his little sheep is lost, he leaves the ninetyand nine and goes out to search for it. The night may be darkand stormy, but he hurries along, never stopping to rest. Far intothe night, he hears a faint cry, “Baa, baa, baa.” Following thesound, he climbs the steep hills. At last he finds his lost sheepnext to a dangerous cliff. It is stuck in a thorn bush, bleeding andready to die.

What doyou think theshepherd doeswhen he findshis sheep?Does he getmad at it?Does he hit itwith his staff? What would youhave done ifyour dog waslost and youfound him atlast? ❖

TuesdayOur Lost World

What did the shepherd do with the sheep that caused himso much trouble? He did not scold it. No, he did not whip it. Hedid not even try to lead it home. Lovingly, but gently he pickedup the trembling sheep. Pressing it close to his heart, he kept itwarm and so carried it home. Although the road was rough andthe night was dark and stormy, the shepherd was happy, for hehad found his lost sheep. Aren’t you glad that this story hassuch a beautiful ending? We would be very sad if the shepherdcame home without his sheep, wouldn’t we?

Do you know who is the shepherd? Who are the 99 sheep, and who is the one lost sheep? Jesus is the Good Shepherdwho had many worlds in heaven. One of these worlds was ourworld. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, our world becamelost like the sheep in the story. So, Jesus left His ninety andnine perfect worlds that have never sinned. He left His perfecthome in heaven, and came to this sinful earth to take thepunishment for all those times we have gone our own way. Hecame to save us from the pit of sin. The Bible says, “All we likesheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one to his ownway.” You and I have gone our own way by doing wrong things,by being selfish, impatient and unkind. We do wrong thingsbecause we were born with a “want to have” our own way. TheLord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, wants to save us from beinglost in sin. Will you let Him? Will you ask Him to take you backhome to His sheepfold in heaven? ❖

ThursdayThe Lost Coin

Have you ever lost something very precious? Maybe you lost avery special toy or book or even your Sabbath Bible Lesson? Yousearched in the closet, under the bed, on the bookshelf, but couldnot find it. At last, you prayed about it and with the help ofJesus you found it right away. After Jesus told the parable ofthe Lost Sheep, He then told another story about the Lost Coin.

Once there was a woman who had ten pieces of silver, but shelost one of them. In Jesus’ days a silver coin was worth a lot ofmoney. You could buy lots of things with just one silver coin. Thewoman was very upset for losing the coin, because her father hadgiven it to her long ago. Since her house was dark without anywindows, she had a hard time finding it. So, she lit a candle andwent searching all over the house. She looked in the cabinets, onthe table, in her pockets and even under the rug, but no coin. Atlast, after sweeping the whole house she found the precious coin.Do you remember how happy and thankful you feel after findingsomething you lost? This woman was so happy that she called allher friends and neighbors and said, “Come and be happy with me,for I have found my lost coin.”

Jesus finished this story by saying, “In the same way, theangels of God are happy when one sinnerturns away from his sins.” When one boy, girl, Mom, Dad or grown-up stops doing hisor her own way and follows Jesus, all theangels in heaven are singing. They takeup their golden harps and play with theheavenly choir. The stories about theLost Sheep and the Lost Coin showus how much God loves us, andhow much He tries to help uslove Him too. ❖

Questions:1. What did the woman

lose? How hard did shelook to find what shehad lost?

2. What did she do aftershe found the lostcoin?

How About You: When you lose some-

thing, do you look for ittill you find it? If you werelost in the woods wouldyou want someone to lookfor you until you werefound? Do you rememberto thank Jesus when youfind your lost things?

Be happy with theangels when someonegives their heart to Jesus.

Parents’ Corner:“The woman in the

parable searches diligent-ly for her lost coin. Shelights the candle andsweeps the house. Sheremoves everything thatmight obstruct hersearch. Though only onepiece is lost, she will notcease her efforts untilthat piece is found. So inthe family if one memberis lost to God everymeans should be used forhis recovery. On the partof all the others let therebe diligent, careful self-examination. Let the life-practice be investigated.See if there is not somemistake, some error inmanagement, by whichthat soul is confirmed inimpenitence.” —Christ’sObject Lessons, p. 194.

FridayStacy Is Lost

Stacy started walking down the sidewalk. Mommy wasvery busy, so Stacy decided she’d go to the park and play fora little while. “I’ll get back before Mother misses me. Motherthinks I am not old enough to go to the park alone. That issilly!” she thought.

After turning a corner, Stacy heard a dog barking behindher. She was scared of dogs, and began to run blindly. At lastshe didn’t hear the dog anymore, so she stopped. “Oh no! Thisisn’t the park!” she exclaimed. “Where is the park? It has to behere somewhere,” she thought.

Ten blocks and 20 minutes later, Stacy sat on the curbwith tears in her eyes. “Mommy is too busy to care if I’mmissing. No one will even notice I’m gone!” she cried. When shelooked up she saw a familiar-looking car! Mother was comingto her rescue!

In the same way, Jesus comes looking for us even whenHe is busy. We might think we know what is good for us, and

accidently get lost fromJesus with no wayback. But He willalways come lookingfor His lost ones. ❖

The Lost BoySunday

Memory Verse: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just toforgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from allunrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9.

An Unthankful BoyAre you thankful for your mom and dad? Are you thankful

for the good food Mom makes, and for Dad who works hard topay for your house and food? We are sure you are thankful foryour parents. Our story today is about a boy who was notthankful to his dad for all the good things he gave tohim. One day, he started thinking evil thoughts likethese, “I am going to run away from home! Idon’t like living here. Dad is always telling mewhat to do. I have to make my bed, do schoolwork and farm work. My big brother is alwaysbossing me around. I am tired of all this.”

This boy had a kind, rich father, and helived in a big, lovely house with his brother andmany servants. He also must have had amother, but we don’t know anything about her.The father loved his two sons dearly. One day,the younger brother made his father very sadby telling him, “Dad, I do not want to stayhome any longer. Give me my share of moneyso I can go away.” This boy did not have a rightto his father’s money while his dad was stillalive; yet, the father gave him his share. O howthe father wished his younger boy would stay athome and be happy! Although he was very sadto see his boy leave home, the father did notstop him. He gave him the inheritance and hopedthat he would be good and do what is right. ❖

2. What did the father tellhim when he asked for hisinheritance?

How About You: Are you honoring and

Honor and obey yourparents.

Parents’ Corner: “The youth acknowledges

no obligation to his father, and expresses no gratitude;yet he claims the privilege ofa child in sharing hisfather’s goods. The inheri-tance that would fall to himat his father’s death hedesires to receive now. He isbent on present enjoyment, and cares not for thefuture.

“Having obtained his pat-rimony, he goes into ‘a farcountry,’ away from hisfather’s home. With moneyin plenty, and liberty to doas he likes, he flatters him-self that the desire of hisheart is reached. There is noone to say, Do not do this, for it will be an injury toyourself; or, Do this, becauseit is right. Evil companionshelp him to plunge everdeeper into sin, and hewastes his ‘substance withriotous living.’ ” —Christ’sObject Lessons, p. 199.

MondayThe Boy Leaves Home

What do you think the selfish boy did after he got his inheri-tance? He went far away from home to another country. Do youknow why? He didn’t want his father to know where he was orwhat he was doing. Now that he had plenty of money, he foundmany new friends who were happy to help him spend it. This self-ish boy made parties for his friends and bought them many pre-sents. Together they were eating and drinking, and doing manywrong things.

Since this boy was lazy, he did not work and save his money. One day, there was a big famine in the land and there was nofood. Soon after, his money ran out, and he had nothing to eat.Do you know what happened to his friends? They left him, because now he was a poor man. What fake friends they were!True friends stay with us whether we are rich or poor, whether

we are sick or healthy. If you could have seen

this runaway boy now, youwould have seen how bad helooked. His clothes were

torn and his face looked thinand pale. He was feeling lonelyand missing his father.

The story of the Lost Boyis about each one of uswhen we run away from

Jesus, and go our own way. ❖

Parents’ Corner:“What a picture here

Like the ungratefulson, he claims the goodthings of God as his byright. He takes them asa matter of course, andmakes no return of grat-itude, renders no serviceof love. TuesdayPigs for Friends

Far away from home, with no friends, no food, no bed, andno money was this lost boy now. O, how sad and lonely he wasfor home! One day, he decided, “I had better find some work orI am going to die of hunger.” So, he found a job taking care ofpigs. While watching the pigs one day, he was sitting on theground, wishing to fill himself with the husks the pigs wereeating. He remembered his father’s home so far away. Hethought of his kind father and the happy times he used tohave with his brother. Thinking out loud, he said, “Why, eventhe servants in my father’s house are living better than I.They have good food to eat, clean clothes to wear and a placeto sleep.” As he looked at his dirty, ragged clothes and heardhis growling stomach he said, “And look at me. I am herestarving to death.”

Oh, how sorry he was for running away from home andfor hurting his loving father. Yes, he was very sorry fordoing all the wicked things with his friends, and for beingsuch a foolish son. But at last he makes the right choiceand says, “I will go to my father and say, ‘I have sinnedagainst God and against you. I am no more worthy to becalled your son. Can you please make me one of your ser-

vants?’ ” Boysand girls, do

you think hisfather would take

him back? Would youhave taken him

did? ❖

How About You:When you disobey Mom or

Dad, do you go back and asktheir forgiveness?

Ask Jesus to forgiveyou when you are bad.

Parents’ Corner: “The love of God still

yearns over the one who haschosen to separate fromHim, and He sets in opera-tion influences to bring himback to the Father’s house. The prodigal son in hiswretchedness ‘came to him-self.’ The deceptive powerthat Satan had exercisedover him was broken. He sawthat his suffering was theresult of his own folly, andhe said, ‘How many hiredservants of my father’shave bread enough and tospare, and I perish withhunger! I will arise and go tomy father.’ Miserable as hewas, the prodigal found hopein the conviction of hisfather’s love. It was thatlove which was drawing himtoward home. So it is theassurance of God’s lovethat constrains the sinnerto return to God.” —Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 202.

WednesdayThe Long Walk Home

Have you ever been so hungry that you couldn’t stand up andwalk? If so, you know how terrible you felt. The lost boy was sohungry that he could barely walk from weakness. Yet, he turns hisback to the pigs, and starts the long walk home. He had beenstarving for many days, but he hurries home as fast as he can.As he looks at his coat he sees big holes everywhere. But hedoesn’t care what the neighbors will say when they see him.Remember how proud and unthankful he was as he was leavinghome? Now he is humble and very sorry for his sins. While he iswalking, he does not know that someone is waiting for him faraway. Every day, his father has been watching the road, thinking,“Maybe today my lost boy will come home.” On that special day,as the father looked far away, he saw a man walking toward him.The man has ragged clothes and a skinny face. Coming closer, thefather recognized his son and said, “This is my lost boy.” So heran with outstretched arms to meet him.

What do you think the father did say to his boy? Did he say,“You bad boy, why did you run away from home? Where’s all themoney I gave you? Couldn’t you buy some new clothes?” Oh no,this father was not angry at his boy. He never told him oneunkind word. But when he saw him, he hugged him and kissed him.I can almost hear him say, “Myson, I am so glad you arecoming home. Since theday you left, I have beencoming to look for youon this highway.” Whata kind and lovingfather this was! Wehope that you alsohave such a loving Dadwho is kind to you whenyou are good or bad. ❖

2. What did the fatherdo as he saw his boycoming home?

How About You: Do you love your

brother when he is goodor bad to you?

Love otherswhether they are good orbad.

Parents’ Corner: “Little did the gay,

thoughtless youth, as hewent out from hisfather’s gate, dream ofthe ache and longing leftin that father’s heart. When he danced andfeasted with his wildcompanions, little did hethink of the shadow thathad fallen on his home. And now as with wearyand painful steps he pur-sues the homeward way,he knows not that one iswatching for his return. But while he is yet ‘agreat way off’ the fatherdiscerns his form. Love isof quick sight. Not eventhe degradation of theyears of sin can concealthe son from thefather’s eyes. He ‘hadcompassion, and ran,and fell on his neck’ in along, clinging, tenderembrace.” —Christ’sObject Lessons, p. 203.

ThursdayWelcome Home Party

What would you do if your little brother was wearing a shirtwith big holes and pants that had mud all over it? If you hadan extra shirt, wouldn’t you take it off and cover him so otherswouldn’t make fun of him? The loving father in this story didnot want the neighbors to make fun of his son. So, he took offhis own beautiful robe and wrapped it around his boy. Now, noone would see his rags. The lost son now cries with bittertears, “O Father, I have disobeyed God and you, and am nolonger worthy to be called your son.” The father forgives hisson and arm-in-arm they walk back home together.

When they get there, the father gives his son the best roomin the house. He tells his servants, “Bring him the best robeand put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and shoes on hisfeet. Make a big party for him, and let us eat and drink and behappy, for my son was dead, and now he is alive again. He waslost and now he is found!”

What a kind and loving father! What a patient and goodfather! Dear boys and girls, the loving Father in this story isour God. All of us have been rebellious and unthankful childrenlike the boy in this story. We have run away from God and doneevil. We have sinned against Him and chosen our own way. Whilewe were bad, God was sad. Every day He waited for us to comeback to Him. When at last we felt miserable about doing evil,we did come back to Him. He didn’t tell us, “You are a bad boy”or “You are a bad girl” but He forgave us our sins. The Bibletells us, He throws them into the middle of the sea. What agreat heavenly Father we have. When you are disobedient goback to God and say, “I am sorry for being bad. Please, forgiveme and make me your son or daughter.” He will forgive you andmake you His child. ❖

Questions:1. Why did the father put his

own coat on his boy?2. How did his family wel-

come the lost boy?3. How does God welcome

us when we are sorry forour sins?

How About You: Do you ask God to forgive

you when you run away fromHim?

Stop running awayfrom God.

Parents’ Corner:“What assurance here, of

God’s willingness to receivethe repenting sinner! Haveyou, reader, chosen your ownway? Have you wandered farfrom God? Have you soughtto feast upon the fruits oftransgression, only to findthem turn to ashes uponyour lips? And now, your sub-stance spent, your life-plansthwarted, and your hopesdead, do you sit alone anddesolate? FridayThe Jealous Brother

If your brother was lost or had run away, how would you feel ifhe came back home one day? You would be so happy, wouldn’t you?Maybe you would call your neighbors and say, “My brother is back.Come and see him.” Do you know how the older brother in ourstory felt when his little brother came back? He was working onhis father’s farm that day, and as he came near home, he heardmusic and singing. “What is all this singing and noise about?” heasked a servant. The servant told him, “Your brother has comeback home and your father has made a big ‘welcome home’ partyfor him.”

The older brother was so angry that he would not even goinside the house. He was jealous that his father had made aparty for his brother who had been such a bad boy. When thefather came outside, the older son told him, “I have been with youall these years. Never did I disobey you, and yet, you never made aparty for me. You never invited our neighbors and friends for me.But as soon as my little, bad brother came back, you made a bigdinner for him. It’s not fair.”

What did the father tell his jealous, older boy? Lovingly hesaid, “My son, you have always been with me, and everything Ihave is yours. But your younger brother was dead and now he isalive. He was lost and now he is found.”

Whether the older brother felt sorry for being angry at hisfather and jealous of his brother, we do not know. But we do knowthat if he did not ask God to take away his anger and jealousy hewill not be saved. So boys and girls, ask Jesus to help you be kindto your brothers and sisters and never be jealous of them. ❖

Lesson Helps: Luke 15:25-32; Christ’sObject Lessons, pp. 207-211.

Questions:1. Why was the older

brother angry when hecame home?

2. What did his fathertell him?

How About You: Are you jealous of your

brother or sister? Why isit wrong to be jealous?

Overcome jealousy.

Parents’ Corner: “Self-righteousness

not only leads men tomisrepresent God, butmakes them coldheartedand critical toward theirbrethren. The elder son, inhis selfishness and jeal-ousy, stood ready towatch his brother, tocriticize every action, andto accuse him for theleast deficiency. He woulddetect every mistake, andmake the most of everywrong act. Thus he wouldseek to justify his ownunforgiving spirit. Manytoday are doing the samething. While the soul ismaking its very firststruggles against a floodof temptations, theystand by, stubborn, self-willed, complaining, accus-ing. They may claim to bechildren of God, but theyare acting out the spiritof Satan. By their atti-tude toward theirbrethren, these accusersplace themselves whereGod cannot give themthe light of His counte-nance.” —Christ’s ObjectLessons, p. 210.

The Blind Man SeesAgain

SundayMemory Verse:

“Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!”Psalm 107:15.

A Blind BeggarHow would you feel if you woke up one morning and could not

see? Everything was dark. What if you went to the doctor and hesaid that you would be blind forever? How sad you would be thatyou would never see your mom, dad, brother or sister again. Whatif you could never look at your dog, kitten, or at beautiful rain-bows? You can stop right now, and thank Jesus for your two eyesthat allow you to see God’s beautiful world.

One Sabbath day as Jesus and His disciples were coming outof the temple, they saw a blind man sitting on the street beggingfor money. In those days the only way blind people could makemoney for food and clothes was to sit on the street corner andbeg. “Help the blind! Please help the blind!” they would cry.

This poor man, who was begging by the temple, had been blindsince he was a little baby. He had never seen his mom and dad,the birds and the sunshine, or the trees and flowers. The disci-ples of Jesus thought that he was blind because he had donesomething very bad. Also they thought that maybe his fatherand mother had been bad people, so God punished them by givingthem a blind boy. Coming close to Jesus, they asked, “Master, whose fault is it that this man was born blind? Was it becausehe sinned or his parents?” Jesus told them “Neither this man norhis parents have sinned. But God wants to show His powerthrough him.” What Jesus meant by these words was that theman was born blind so that God could heal him through Jesus. ❖

Lesson Helps: John 9:1-3; The Desire ofAges, p. 470.

Questions:1. What was the blind

man doing by the tem-ple?

2. What questions didthe disciples askJesus about the blindman?

How About You?When something bad

happens to your brotheror sister, do you say, “Itserves you right! You arebeing punished for beingbad”?

Don’t judge others.

Parents’ Corner:“It was generally

believed by the Jewsthat sin is punished inthis life. Every afflictionwas regarded as thepenalty of some wrong-doing, either of the suf-ferer himself or of hisparents. It is true thatall suffering results fromthe transgression ofGod’s law, but this truthhad become perverted.Satan, the author of sinand all its results, hadled men to look upon dis-ease and death as pro-ceeding from God—aspunishment arbitrarilyinflicted on account ofsin. Hence one uponwhom some great afflic-tion or calamity had fall-en had the additionalburden of being regardedas a great sinner. ” —The Desire of Ages, p. 471.

MondayJesus Loves the Handicapped

Have you ever seen a blind person walking on the streetwith a “seeing-eye dog”? These animals are well trained totake their blind masters wherever they need to go. They knowwhen to cross the street and when to wait. Handicapped peo-ple who cannot walk have wheelchairs that can take themaround. We can be thankful that today these people can go toschool and work. They can almost live a normal life. But in theold times, life was very hard for them.

The Jews in the time of Jesus were unkind to the blind andthe handicapped. They felt that a person who was sick, blindor crippled, was being punished by God for something badthey had done. Although we often get sick because we disobeyGod’s health rules, Satan has brought sin into our world.Because of sin some people become blind, sick, or deaf.

While the Jewish priests and people looked down on theblind and crippled, Jesus loved them. He was their friend.Whenever He could, He opened the eyes of the blind, made thecrippled to walk, and opened the ears of the deaf. Jesus felt

sorry for the blind manwho was begging by

the temple. Hewanted to heal hiseyes. So He pickedup some wet clayfrom the ground, mixed it with spit-tle and put it onthe blind man’seyes. Then He said,“Go and wash inthe pool of waterthat is calledSiloam.” Do youknow what hap-pened next? ❖

Be kind and helpful tothose with handicaps.

Parents’ Corner:“God had given a lesson

designed to prevent this. The history of Job hadshown that suffering isinflicted by Satan, and isoverruled by God for pur-poses of mercy. But Israeldid not understand the les-son. The same error forwhich God had reproved thefriends of Job was repeatedby the Jews in their rejec-tion of Christ.” —The Desireof Ages, p. 471.

TuesdayThe Blind Man Can See

The pool where Jesus had sent the blind man to wash hiseyes was far from the temple. To get to this pool, he had to walkslowly through the streets of Jerusalem. Just think how hard itwas for him to walk, blind as he was with those two blotches ofmud on his eyes. Even though he did not know that Jesus wasthe Son of God, he did what Jesus had told him. When he cameto the pool, he washed the clay from his eyes just as Jesus hadtold him to do. Right away he was healed, and for the first timein his life he could see.

How happy and thankful he must have been to the wonderfulMan who had given him sight! But where was that Stranger whomade him to see? Who was He? Now that the man could see theblue sky, the green trees, the flowers, the birds and all the lovelythings around him, he hurried home. When he got there, his neigh-bors and friends asked, “Is not this our blind neighbor who sat bythe temple begging?” Some of them said, “Yes, this is the man.”But others said, “No, it is someone who looks very much like him.”The man looked so different now. With his eyes open, his wholeface was changed and happy. That’s why his neighbors couldn’trecognize him. ❖

Lesson Helps: John 9:8-15; The Desireof Ages, p. 471.

2. What did his neighborssay when they sawhim?

How About You:Do you have faith that

Jesus can make you wellwhen you are sick?

Believe that Jesuscan heal you when you aresick.

Parents’ Corner:“The neighbors of the

young man, and thosewho knew him before in hisblindness, said, ‘Is notthis he that sat andbegged?’ They looked uponhim with doubt; for whenhis eyes were opened, hiscountenance waschanged and brightened, and he appeared likeanother man. From oneto another the questionpassed. Some said, ‘Thisis he;’ others, ‘He is likehim.’ But he who hadreceived the great bless-ing settled the questionby saying, ‘I am he.’ Hethen told them of Jesus, and by what means hehad been healed, and theyinquired, ‘Where is He? Hesaid, I know not.’ ” —TheDesire of Ages, pp. 471,472.

WednesdayThe Jews Argue

What would you do if your friends and neighbors couldn’trecognize you? You would tell them who you are, wouldn’t you?The healed man told his neighbors, “I am the one who was blindbut now I see.” Then he told them of Jesus and how He hadhealed him. “Where is this wonderful Man who healed you?” thepeople asked?” “I do not know,” said the man.

Then his neighbors took him to some men called Pharisees. These men made a show of obeying the law, but they were bigsinners. The Pharisees asked him, “How were your eyes opened?”He told them, “A man put clay on my eyes; I washed in the pooland now I see.” The Pharisees knew that Jesus had made theblind man to see. Since they did not like Jesus, they said, “TheMan who healed you is not from God because He made you wellon the Sabbath.”

Some Jews who hated Jesus were also standing nearby. Theywouldn’t believe that this man was blind and that Jesus had healedhim, so they said, “Call his parents and we will ask them.” So theysent for his father and mother and asked them, “Is this your sonwho was born blind? How come he can now see?” The man’s parentswere afraid to tell the priests how Jesus had healed their son. Foranyone who believed on Jesus would not be allowed to go to the

temple to worship God anymore. So the parents said,

“We know this is our sonand that he was blindand now he can see.He is old enough. Askhim how he was

healed.” The priests andPharisees were jealousof Jesus because peo-ple liked Him more thanthem. ❖

Parents’ Corner: “The Pharisees saw that

they were giving publicity tothe work done by Jesus. They could not deny the mir-acle. The blind man was filledwith joy and gratitude; hebeheld the wondrous thingsof nature, and was filledwith delight at the beautyof earth and sky. He freelyrelated his experience, andagain they tried to silencehim, saying, ‘Give God thepraise: we know that thisMan is a sinner.’ That is, Donot say again that thisMan gave you sight; it isGod who has done this.” —The Desire of Ages, p. 473.

ThursdayBe Kind to the Handicapped

Have people ever made fun of you because you believed inJesus? The priests and Pharisees were making fun of the healedman because he believed in Jesus. They asked him many questionsand tried to confuse him. Finally, the man was tired of arguingwith them. He said, “You are teachers of the people. How comeyou don’t know who is the Man who healed me? Why don’t youknow where He came from? You know that God would not use Himto open my eyes if He were a sinner.” The priests were so angrythat they threw the man out of the temple. So, now he could notgo there on Sabbath to worship God.

Jesus knew what these wicked men were doing to the healedman. He heard how they had put him out of the temple, so Hewent to look for him. When Jesus found him, he asked, “Do youbelieve on the Son of God?” The man answered, “Who is He, Lord, that I might believe on Him?” “You have seen Him. I am the One, ”said Jesus. The man was so happy to find Jesus at last. Fallingdown at His feet he worshiped Him and said, “Lord, I believe.”

There are many blind, crippled, deaf and handicapped men andwomen in our world. Some of them can’t see and hear. Otherscan’t walk or talk, but our God loves them just as much as Heloves you and me. He wants us to treatthem with special kindness and love. So thenext time you see handicapped persons, don’t stare at them. Give them a smile. Behelpful and treat them like you would yourbest friend. When Jesus comes again, He willmake the blind, the deaf, and crippledpeople, who love Him, well forever. Theywill throw away their crutches, theirwheelchairs, and hearing aids, neverto use them again. ❖

bothering the healedman?

2. Who came to rescuehim and what did Hesay?

Parent’s Corner:“For the first time

the blind man lookedupon the face of hisRestorer. Before thecouncil he had seen hisparents troubled andperplexed; he had lookedupon the frowning facesof the rabbis; now hiseyes rested upon theloving, peaceful counte-nance of Jesus. FridayA Rich Boy

Ben wanted to be rich. One day he said, “I wish I was richand could have things like some of the other boys have.”“Really, Ben?” said his father, turning around quickly, “Howmuch will you take for your legs?” “For my legs?” asked Ben insurprise. “Yes. What do you use them for?” “Why, I can run andjump and play and do almost everything.” “That’s so,” saidFather. “You would not take ten thousand dollars for them, would you?” “No, sir.”

“How about your voice? You sing quite well, and I know youtalk a little bit. You would not part with that for ten thousanddollars, would you?” “No, sir.” “Your hearing and sense of tasteare better than five thousand dollars apiece at the very least, don’t you think so?” “Yes, sir.” “Your eyes, now, how would youlike to have fifty thousand dollars, and be blind the rest ofyour life?” “I would not like it at all.” “Think a moment, Ben,

fifty thousand dollars is a lot of money. Are you verysure you would not sell them for that amount?” “Yes,

sir.”“Let’s see, now,” said Father, “legs, ten thou-

sand; arms, ten; voice, ten; hearing, five; taste, five; good health, ten; and eyes, fifty. That makes

a hundred. You are worth one hundred thousandat the very lowest figure, my boy. Now run and play,

jump, laugh, and hear your friends laugh, too. Lookat the beautiful things around you with those fifty-

thousand-dollar eyes of yours. Then come home hungry fordinner. And think now and then how rich you really are.”

It was a lesson Ben never forgot. And since that dayevery time he sees a cripple or a blind man, he thinks how

many things he has to be thankful for. It has helped tomake him happy. ❖

Lazarus LivesSunday

Memory Verse: “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believethin me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” John11:25.

Jesus Visits His FriendsDid you ever go to town with Mom all day and get very

tired? Maybe it was a cold and rainy day and you were freezingcold. How glad you were to come home. Maybe you took offyour shoes and laid down on the sofa to rest. Then Mothermade a delicious soup and you were thankful to have a warmhome, a loving Mom and Dad and good food to eat.

When Jesus lived on this earth, He had no home where Hecould go and rest. He had to wait for other people to inviteHim to their homes. Just think how tired He felt after a longday of preaching and walking! There was one home that Jesusliked to visit more than any otherbecause the people who lived thereloved Him very much. This was thehome of Lazarus and his two sisters,Mary and Martha. Jesus would oftencome to visit them, and theywere always glad to see Him. Intheir home, Jesus would probablytake off His sandals and laycomfortably on the sofa.

The very first time Jesus cameto Bethany, Martha invited Himand His disciples for dinner. Assoon as they arrived, Marthawent to the kitchen to pre-pare food for them. Sheloved to cook good food forher guests, but Mary liked tosit at the feet of Jesus andlisten to His words. ❖

MondayMartha Is Upset

Have you ever worked very hard with your mother or fatherwhile your little brother or sister were playing? Maybe you becameupset that Mom and Dad didn’t make your brother work, so youthought, “It’s not fair that I have to work while he plays.” This isexactly how Martha felt as she was preparing dinner for Jesus. She was working so hard while her sister was sitting with herhands folded, listening to Jesus tell stories. Martha came toJesus and said, “Don’t you care that my sister is doing nothingwhile I have to do all the work?”

Martha was so busy making food for her guests that sheforgot to sit and talk with them. In a kind way, Jesus told her,“Martha, Martha, you are worried about many things, but thereis one important thing. Mary has chosen that good part whichno one can take away from her.” Do you know what these wordsmeant? Jesus was telling Martha, “It is more important that youhear My words than that you work so hard in the kitchen. Youcan always cook, but you won’t always have Me as your guest.”

Jesus wants us to work hard, but He also wants us to taketime to sit at His feet just like Mary. You can sit at Jesus’ feet by listening to

Mom or Dad reading the Bible,by praying and singing toJesus. There is one more

way. You can go to the moun-tains, to the rivers and oceans, to

the forest and gardens andhear God talking to you

through the things of nature. Soremember to work hard like Martha, but also take time to sit at Jesus’

feet like Mary every day. ❖

Parents’ Corner: “The ‘one thing’ that

Martha needed was acalm, devotional spirit, adeeper anxiety for knowl-edge concerning thefuture, immortal life, andthe graces necessary forspiritual advancement. She needed less anxietyfor the things whichpass away, and more forthose things whichendure forever. Jesuswould teach His childrento seize every opportuni-ty of gaining that knowl-edge which will makethem wise unto salva-tion. The cause of Christneeds careful, energeticworkers. There is a widefield for the Marthas, with their zeal in activereligious work. But letthem first sit with Maryat the feet of Jesus. TuesdayLazarus Is Sick

One day Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary, became very sick. His sisters were so worried. They were afraidtheir only brother would die. Immediately, they thought ofJesus and sent him a message, “Lord, the one you love issick.” Jesus told the messenger, “His sickness is not untodeath but for the glory of God.” Mary and Martha thoughtthat Jesus would come to see their brother at once.Anxiously they waited for Him, perhaps looking down the roadto see if He was coming. How surprised they were when themessenger came back without Jesus. Lovingly the two sistersspoke words of hope to their brother. Perhaps they said“Lazarus, Jesus will soon come to make you well. Just wait alittle more.”

Jesus loved Lazarus and his sisters, but He did not go totheir house at once. He waited two days after the messengercame to go to Bethany. Poor Lazarus could not wait for Jesusto come. He was so sick that he died. Mary and Martha coulddo nothing to save their brother. They were, oh so sad! “Whydidn’t Jesus come right away and heal our brother? Maybe Heforgot about us,” they thought. But Jesus did not forgetabout His friends. He never forgets! Jesus wanted to dosomething more wonderful for Lazarus than just make himwell. Do you know what it was? ❖

Yet he broughtthe message, ‘This sicknessis not unto death,’ and theyclung to the hope thatLazarus would live. Tenderlythey tried to speak words ofhope and encouragement tothe almost unconscious suf-ferer. When Lazarus died, they were bitterly disap-pointed; but they felt thesustaining grace of Christ, and this kept them fromreflecting any blame on theSaviour.”—The Desire ofAges, p. 526.

WednesdayJesus Talks to Martha

“Why is Jesus taking such a long time to go to the house ofsick Lazarus?” the disciples wondered. Finally after two days,Jesus told them, “Let us go to Bethany. Our friend Lazarussleeps; but I go to awake him out of sleep.” The disciples did notunderstand what Jesus meant, so they said, “Lord, if he is sleep-ing, he will wake up.” Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus isdead.”

When Jesus finally came to Bethany, He sent a messenger totell Mary and Martha that He had come. There were many friendsat their house who had come to comfort them. Softly the mes-senger told Martha, “Jesus has come, and He wishes to see you.”Martha went out quickly to see Jesus. Mary did not go with herfor she did not hear what the messenger had said. She stayed inthe house and cried over her dear brother. When Martha sawJesus she told Him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldnot have died. But even now, I know, that whatever You ask ofGod, He will give it to You.”

Jesus looked lovingly into her crying face. He knew how sad shewas, then kindly He said to her, “Your brother will live again.”Martha did not understand what Jesus meant, for she said, “Iknow he will wake up in the resurrection.” Jesus then said to her,“I am the resurrection and life and who believes on Me shall neverdie. Do youbelieve this?”Martha said,“Yes, Lord, Ibelieve that You areChrist, the Son ofGod.” ❖

ThursdayJesus Cries

Martha couldn’t wait to tell Mary that Jesus had come, soshe quickly hurried into the house. “Mary,” she whispered,“Jesus has come and wants to see you.” As soon as Maryheard this, she got up and went to the place where Jesus waswaiting for her. When the people saw Mary leaving, they fol-lowed her, thinking she was going to the grave of Lazarus.

Kneeling at the feet of Jesus, Mary cried, “Lord, Lord, if Youhad been here my brother would not have died.” Jesus askedthe two sisters, “Where did you lay your brother?” Theyanswered, “Lord, come and see.” All the way to the grave Maryand Martha and their friends were crying. Together theywalked to a big cave which had a big hole. Inside the cave wasthe grave of Lazarus. When Jesus saw everyone crying, Hecried also. Jesus did not cry for Lazarus, forsoon He would bring him back to life. ButJesus cried for the people who werestanding there and who wouldsoon put Him to death onthe cross. Jesus alsocried for you and me,for your mom and dad,and for the children and people all aroundthe world. Our sins were so heavy for Himbecause He was carryingthem all. How much Heloved us and wishedto save us! Butsome would not wantto be saved. Dear boysand girls, don’t let Jesus’tears be in vain. Hear His lovingvoice. Lookingdown the years to come, Hesaw the suffering and sor-row, tears and death, thatwere to be the lot of men.His heart was pierced withthe pain of the human fami-ly of all ages and in alllands. FridayRoll Away the Stone

Did you ever see a large, round stone as big as a door? Thestone that covered the tomb of Lazarus was big and round.Jesus walked up to the cave where Lazarus was laying and said,“Take away this stone.” A few strong men were ready to move thestone, but Martha stopped them. She did not like everyone tosee her dead brother. Jesus told her, “Didn’t I tell you that if youbelieve, you will see the glory of God?” Right away the strong mentook away the big stone from the cave.

Everyone was quiet. No one was crying now. All were waitingto see what Jesus would do. Stepping up close to the grave,Jesus lifted His eyes to heaven and prayed, “Father, I thank Youthat You have heard me.” After He had finished praying, He calledin a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” Suddenly, there was noise inthe dark cave. Dead Lazarus heard the voice of Jesus and

obeyed. Standing up from his grave, he walked to the door ofthe cave. He had a hard time walking for his body and facewere wrapped in long strips of cloth. Jesus told some men,

“Loose him and let him go.” They quickly unfastened thegraveclothes. Lazarus stood before the crowd. Nolonger was he sick and weak, but strong and healthy. His eyes were full of happiness and love for his friendJesus. Lazarus walked to Jesus and worshiped at His

feet. I can just hear him saying, “Thank you, dearJesus, for bringing me back to life! Thank you!Thank you! Thank you!” Mary and Martha hugged

their dear brother and thanked Jesus forbringing him back to life. All the relativeswere happy and praising God. But while

Lazarus and his sisters were hugging eachother, Jesus disappeared from the crowd. No one could find Him. What a humble

Jesus! All He wants to do is to make people happy. Iwant to be like Him, don’t you? ❖

Parents’ Corner: “When the Lord is

about to do a work, Satanmoves upon someone toobject. ‘Take ye away thestone,’ Christ said. As faras possible, prepare theway for My work. ButMartha’s positive andambitious nature assert-ed itself. She was unwillingthat the decomposingbody should be brought toview. The human heart isslow to understandChrist’s words, andMartha’s faith had notgrasped the true meaningof His promise. . . .‘Take yeaway the stone.’ Christcould have commandedthe stone to remove, andit would have obeyed Hisvoice. He could have biddenthe angels who were closeby His side to do this. AtHis bidding, invisible handswould have removed thestone. But it was to betaken away by humanhands. Thus Christ wouldshow that humanity is tocooperate with divinity. What human power can dodivine power is not sum-moned to do.” —TheDesire of Ages, p. 535.

Jesus, the Friend ofLittle People

SundayMemory Verse:

“But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer lit-tle children to come unto me, and forbid them not: forof such is the kingdom of God.” Luke 18:16.

Jesus Loved the Little PeopleDo you know who were Jesus’ favorite friends? Was it His

twelve disciples? Was it His mom, dad and brothers? Or was itMary, Martha and Lazarus? Jesus loved all these people verymuch, but the people He liked the most were little people like you.Jesus loved children. He was glad when they came to talk to Him,and happy to hear them singing songs of praise. After spendinga whole day teaching the people and listening to the priests andPharisees arguing, Jesus was very tired. He was tired of lookingat their mean faces. That’s when He was glad to see the smilingfaces of children.

Jewish moms and dads would often bring their children tosome famous teacher or preacher and ask him, “Lay your handson them and bless them.” Since Jesus was a famous teacher, many mothers came to Him to ask “Bless my children.” But thedisciples didn’t like to see the mothers and children botheringJesus. They thought, “Jesus is too busy to waste His time withthe children. He has more important work to do, like healing andteaching the adults.” Looking unfriendly at the mothers they said,“Go home. Jesus doesn’t want to see your children.” Jesus heardthe mean words of the disciples and told them, “Leave the childrenalone. Allow the little ones to come to Me and do not forbid themfor of such is the kingdom of heaven.” ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 19:13, 14; TheDesire of Ages, p. 511.

Questions:1. Who were Jesus’

favorite friends? Why?2. What did Jesus tell

the disciples whenthey tried to send thechildren away?

How About You:Do you love Jesus as

much as He loves you?

Jesus would like totalk to you, too.

Parents’ Corner:“Jesus was ever a

lover of children. Heaccepted their childishsympathy and theiropen, unaffected love. The grateful praise fromtheir pure lips was musicin His ears, and re-freshed His spirit whenoppressed by contactwith crafty and hypocrit-ical men. Wherever theSaviour went, the benig-nity of His countenance, and His gentle, kindlymanner won the love andconfidence of children.”—The Desire of Ages, p. 511.

MondayJesus Loved the Mothers

Do you know how much your mother loves you? When weasked one little boy, he said, “My mother loves me more thanmillions.” We know that your mother also loves you “millions.”This is why she spends so much time praying for you, askingJesus to help her teach you to obey. The mothers who cameto Jesus were also praying for their boys and girls, and Jesusheard their prayers.

So one day a mother left her home with the chil-dren to find Jesus. On the way she met some of herneighbors and maybe she said, “I am taking mychildren to Jesus so He can bless them.” Perhapsher neighbors said, “Wait for us, we want to gowith you. We want Jesus to bless our littleboys and girls also.” So several motherswalked together to the place where Jesuswas preaching. Many little boys and girls, juniors, and even some youth camealong with their mothers. Often, the mothers would say to Jesuswith tears in their eyes,“Master, please bless my chil-dren.” Lovingly Jesus put Hishands on the heads of thechildren and blessed them.Later He took the little onesin His lap and held them. Howhappy these mothers were. Nowthey went back to their homes with newstrength to train their children for Jesus. ❖

Lesson Helps: Mark 10:13, 14; The Desire ofAges, p. 512.

Questions:1. Why did the mothers

come to Jesus?2. What did Jesus do with

the children?

How About You:Would you have liked to

have a visit with Jesus? What would you tell Him?

Jesus loves the littlepeople.

Parents’ Corner: “Jesus knows the burden

of every mother’s heart. Hewho had a mother thatstruggled with poverty andprivation sympathizes withevery mother in her labors. He who made a long journeyin order to relieve the anx-ious heart of a Canaanitewoman will do as much forthe mothers of today. Hewho gave back to the widowof Nain her only son, andwho in His agony upon thecross remembered His ownmother, is touched today bythe mother’s sorrow. TuesdayLittle Members of God’s Church

Do you know what Jesus was thinking about as He was hold-ing the children in His lap? He thought, “These children and youthlove Me more than the grown-ups. They have given Me theirhearts. One day they will be My disciples.”

Jesus was never too busy to answer the questions of children. When He was teaching, He would speak His sermon in easy wordsso children could understand. Jesus knew that children lovedstories, so He told many stories in His sermons.

The children, juniors, and young people went home after Jesusblessed them, but they never forgot that special visit with Him.

Often their moms would repeat the loving words of Jesus tothem. When the boys and girls grew older and were doing

something bad, they remembered the words ofJesus and how He blessed them. That helpedthem to turn from their bad ways and to dowhat is right.

If Jesus were here today, you would want Himto take you in His arms and bless you, wouldn’tyou? Although we cannot see Jesus face toface, we know He loves all the children every-

where. We can talk to Him in prayer and ask Himto help us be kind like Him. When we do wrong, we

can ask Him to forgive us and help us to dowhat is right.

Do you know whom Jesus has put in yourchurch to bless the children? Of coursethere is Mom and Dad, but then there is

your preacher, your Sabbath schoolteacher, and the grown-up Christians inyour church. Jesus has asked them tolove you and to teach you about Him. ❖

Lesson Helps: The Desire of Ages, pp.513-517.

Questions:1. What was Jesus

thinking as He heldthe children in His lap?

2. Who did Jesus put inthe church to blessthe children?

Parents’ Corner: “As you win [the chil-

dren’s] confidence in youas followers of Christ, itwill be easy to teachthem of the great lovewherewith He has lovedus. As you try to makeplain the truths of salva-tion, and point the chil-dren to Christ as a per-sonal Saviour, angels willbe by your side. The Lordwill give to fathers andmothers grace to inter-est their little ones inthe precious story of theBabe of Bethlehem, whois indeed the hope of theworld.

“When Jesus toldthe disciples not to for-bid the children to cometo Him, He was speakingto His followers in allages—to officers of thechurch, to ministers, helpers, and all Christ-ians. Jesus is drawingthe children, and He bidsus, Suffer them to come;as if He would say, Theywill come if you do nothinder them.” —TheDesire of Ages, p. 517.

WednesdayGive Jesus Your Heart

That same Jesus who blessed the children of long ago hasnot changed today. O how He wishes to bless you and help youto do what is right! Nothing in the world would make Him hap-pier than for you to give Him your heart. You see, Jesus wantsyou to give Him your heart right now while you are young.

What would you do if someone gave you a bunch of wilted, dying flowers for your birthday? Wouldn’t you think, “That is sounkind. I can’t do anything with these dead flowers exceptthrow them away.” When you are young, you are like a freshblooming flower. Jesus wants you to give Him your heart whileyou are fresh and young. People who wait till they are old togive their hearts to Jesus can serve Him only a few years. Buta young child can serve Him for many years. Can you think of aboy who gave his heart to Jesus as a little boy? Samuel wasonly three years old when he went to work for God in the tem-ple. He worked many happy years for Jesus. Yet Solomon, thewisest king that ever lived, wasted most of his young years onhimself. He served idols. Then at last, when he was old andwrinkled, he gave his heart to God again. He was sorry forwasting his life. This is why he wrote, “Remember Jesus when

you are young, before you get old anddon’t care to live any more.” ❖

Parents’ Corner:“Let mothers come to

Jesus with their perplexities. They will find grace sufficientto aid them in the manage-ment of their children. Thegates are open for everymother who would lay herburdens at the Saviour’sfeet. He who said, ‘Sufferthe little children to comeunto Me, and forbid themnot,’ still invites the mothersto lead up their little onesto be blessed by Him. Eventhe babe in its mother’sarms may dwell as under theshadow of the Almightythrough the faith of thepraying mother. John theBaptist was filled with theHoly Spirit from his birth. ThursdayA Girl Named Ellen

Ellen Harmon was a girl who was born in the state of Maine, in the early1800’s almost 170 years ago. She had a twin sister named Elizabeth, andsix other brothers and sisters. All of her brothers loved God. They learnedto always tell the truth, to work at home and help the poor.

Ellen was a happy, healthy, and a strong little girl. She spread sun-shine wherever she went. While she was still a child, she loved to study. If she had a hard lesson to learn or hard work to do, she did not giveup until it was done. Her parents were happy with her and hoped shewould grow up to be a useful lady.

Ellen and her twin sister Elizabeth were quite different. While Ellen couldrun very fast and climb fences quickly, her sister was slower so she wouldcall after her, “Oh Ellen, wait for me!” Then Ellen would patiently wait, forshe was a kind-hearted girl and was always pleasant to everyone.

Near their home there were woods where the twins used to play. Oneday Ellen found a bunch of beechnuts that the squirrels had laid up in ahollow tree. How the twins would have liked to have those nuts! But theywould not steal them from the hard-working squirrels and leave the poorcreatures to be hungry in the long winter. Mother and Father taughtthe girls to always return good for evil. So now they thought of a planto get the beechnuts from the squirrels. They would bring some cornfrom the barn and put it in the hollow tree and instead they would takethe nuts. That seemed a fair deal! But they still felt guilty for takingthe nuts from the squirrels. Finally they decided to bring twice as muchcorn as there were nuts. That surely would not be cheating.

The father of the twin girls had a number of cows. One of them wasvery mean. She would kick and hook at anyone who tried to milk her;but she would stand as still as need be when Ellen milked her. The kindgirl was on friendly terms with all the animals as well as with all thepeople she knew.

One day Elizabeth tried to trick the cow. She put on Ellen’s sunbon-net and went to milk the cow hoping to make her think she was Ellen. But the cow was smarter than that. She would not let Elizabeth milkher, so the twin sister gave up once and for all. Another time one ofthe cows wandered onto some wet ground and its feet slowly sankdeeply into the mud until she could not get out. Ellen found the cow introuble, and what do you suppose she did? She might have taken astick and tried to drive the cow off, but that was not her way of doingthings. Instead, she gathered a bunch of green grass and took it tothe cow. Then she petted the animal, talking gently to her. At last, shetook a hold of the cow’s horns and started walking, calling cheerfuly,“Come on, come on.” At last the cow was convinced, and so she did herbest to get out of the mud until she was on dry ground.

“Even a child isknown by hisdoings, whetherhis work bepure, andwhether it beright.”Proverbs 20:11.

Questions:1. Who was Ellen and how

big was her family?2. What did you learn from

Ellen and Elizabethabout the way theytreated the squirrels?

3. How did Ellen convincethe cow to get out ofthe mud? Why was this abetter way than hittingthe cow with a stick?

Be kind to animals.

FridayEllen Has an Accident

One day, when Ellen was nine years old, she was going home fromschool with Elizabeth and a friend. A thirteen-year old girl, who wasangry about something, followed them. Ellen’s mother taught herchildren never to argue. She told them, “If anyone tries to hurt you, remember to run home as fast as you can.” So the girls hurried on,but the angry girl ran after them. Ellen turned her head to see howfar behind the girl was. Just then, she threw a stone that hit Ellen’snose very hard. Ellen was bleeding badly and she dropped to theground unconscious. When she came to herself again, she was lyingin a store. The kind man at the store offered to take Ellen home inhis carriage, but she told him, “I would rather walk home.” Do youknow why Ellen did not want to go in the man’s buggy? She didn’twant to make his buggy dirty with her bloody nose. After walkingonly a few steps, Ellen became faint and dizzy. So her twin sisterand a friend had to carry her home.

For three weeks Ellen lay in bed. She didn’t know anything thatwas going on around her. Everyone but her mother thought shewould die. Week after week her mother cared for her. Slowly Ellengrew stronger, but she wasn’t as healthy as she used to be. Motherhad a big cradle made for Ellen and there she laid quietly for manyweeks. Ellen became so skinny that one could see many of her bones. Her father was away from home when the accident happened. Whenhe came home again, he kissed all the other children, then lookedaround for Ellen. “Where is my little Ellen?” he asked. “Here she is,”Mother said. Father looked at his daughter, but she was so differ-ent. He hardly knew who she was. Her nose was broken, and her facewas pale and thin. It was hard to believe that this was his littleEllen, the one he left only a few months before—a healthy, happychild. Poor Ellen tried to look cheerful, but her little heart seemed asif it would break.

Ellen was no longer the pretty girl she had once been. Many of hergirl friends forgot about her. She wanted so much to go to school, but she wasn’t well enough to go. Ellen became very sad. After sometime, she tried going to school again but it was hard for her toremember the things she learned. Do you know who helped her withher school work? The teacher asked the same girl who had hit Ellenwith a rock to be her helper at school. O how sorry this girl was tohave hurt Ellen so badly. She was gentle and patient with Ellen. Asshe saw how hard it was for Ellen to write and learn, she felt so sad.But kind-hearted Ellen was careful not to remind the girl of the wayshe had hurt her. Since Ellen was having such hard time in school, her teacher told her to quit school. This made Ellen very sad.

SabbathEllen Gives Her Heart to Jesus

When Ellen was thirteen years old, she heard a great preacher namedWilliam Miller. He told the people that Jesus was coming soon and that theymust be ready to meet Him. Ellen wanted so much to be ready for Jesusthat she could not sleep for many nights. Often she would pray through thenight, asking Jesus to help her be ready when He comes. During one of themeetings, William Miller called the people to come forward and give theirhearts to Jesus. Ellen walked to the front of the church with the others. Butin her heart she felt that she was not good enough to be a child of God.

Next summer Ellen went with her parents to a camp meeting. As she lis-tened to the preacher, she thought, “This time I must have my sins forgivenso I can be God’s child. The preacher read the words of queen Esther, “I will goin unto the king, and if I perish, I perish.” Esther 4:16. He told the people,“Come to Jesus just as you are. He will wash you from all your sins.” As Ellenwas kneeling in prayer with the others, she cried to Jesus like queen Esther,“Help me, Jesus; save me or I will die. I will never stop praying until You hearme and forgive me my sins.” Suddenly, while she was kneeling she felt like herburden of sin left her. She said, “Jesus seems so real to me now. I can cometo Him and tell Him what makes me sad and He will help me. I am so happy.”

After the camp meeting, Ellen went home with her family. But do youknow what happened on the way? The sun seemed to shine more brightly forher. The grass seemed more green and the sky a deeper blue. The trees evenlooked more beautiful, and the birds sang more sweetly. Everything seemedto be praising God. As she touched some flower petals, she thought, “IfGod loves and cares for the flowers, how much more He will care for me. I ama child of God. I will love Him and obey Him and never make Him sad.”

Sometime later, Ellen was baptized and she tried to help other girls toknow Jesus. Yes, she wanted everyone to be as happy as she was. So shestarted little prayer meetings with her friends. Elizabeth and her were knit-ting socks and selling them. They saved the money and gave it to mission-aries so they could tell others about the coming of Jesus.

When Ellen grew to be a lady, she married James White, and her namebecame Ellen White. God talked to her just as He did to Moses, Daniel,Paul, and other Bible prophets. Ellen wrote many books about what Godtold her. We call these the Spirit of Prophecy. Ask your mom and dad toshow you the books Ellen White wrote. We are sure you have many of themin your library. All through her life Ellen made friends and cheered not onlyanimals but also people. She did much to relieve suffering and help youngpeople go to school and know Jesus.

Dear boys and girls, it is our wish and prayer that you, too, may be kind, loving, unselfish and good like Ellen was. Jesus loves you very much. Give Himyour heart when you are little just like Ellen did. Jesus has a plan for yourlife as He had for Ellen. The Rich Young Ruler

SundayMemory Verse:

“If thou wilt enter into life, keep the command-ments.” Matthew 19:17.

Lots of Money, But No HappinessIf you had lots of money and could get anything you want-

ed, what would you buy? A rich man came running to Jesus oneday. He had lots of money, a nice house, animals, lots of foodand clothes. He could buy anything he wanted. But there wassomething he wished to have that all his money could not buy.As he saw Jesus talking to the children, holding them in Hislap and showing them love, he wanted Jesus to bless him also.Oh, how he wished that Jesus would give him happiness! So heknelt at the feet of Jesus and asked, “Good Master, whatgood thing do I have to do to be saved?”

Jesus looked lovingly at the rich man and said, “If youwant to live with Me in heaven, keep the commandments.” ThenJesus named some of the ten commandments to him. The tencommandments are God’s holy law. We can divide them into

two big commandments. One teaches usto love God with all our heart,

mind, soul and strength, andthe other to love our neigh-bor as ourselves. Yet, if

someone asked you, “Tell methe commandments in one word,”what would you say? L - O - V - E!Yes, to obey the commandmentsmeans to love God and our

neighbor. ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 19:16-19; Mark10:14-19; The Desire of Ages,p. 518.

Questions:1. What did the rich young

man ask Jesus?2. How can we love God with

all our heart, mind, souland strength?

How About You:Do you love your brother,

sister, friend or neighbor asmuch as yourself?

Love God with all thatyou have, and your neighboras yourself.

Parents’ Corner: “[The young ruler] had a

high estimate of his ownrighteousness. He did notreally suppose that he wasdefective in anything, yet hewas not altogether satis-fied. He felt the want ofsomething that he did notpossess. Could not Jesusbless him as He blessed thelittle children, and satisfyhis soul want?” —TheDesire of Ages, p. 518.

MondaySell All That You Have!

When he was a very small boy, the rich, young man learnedfrom his father and mother all the commandments. He was a lit-tle upset that Jesus had asked him if he knew the command-ments, for when he was your age, he had memorized all of them. “Ihave kept all these commandments since I was a child,” he toldJesus. “What else shall I do?” The young man thought Jesuswould ask him to do something very hard.

As Jesus looked lovingly into the man’s eyes, He saw hiswhole life and all that he had ever done. “You are missing just onething. If you want to be perfect, sell all that you have, and givethe money to the poor. Then follow Me, and you will have treasurein heaven.”

You see, boys and girls, Jesus saw that this man’s heart wasall clean except for one dirty spot. The name of that dirty spotwas selfishness. This man loved himself and his money more thanhe loved God or his neighbor. Jesus wanted to show him how toget rid of this black spot. Oh, how Jesus loved him, and wished tomake him one of His disciples! If only he would let Jesus takethat dirty spot of selfishness, what a great missionary he couldbe. Do you think this rich man was willing to give away all his rich-es to follow Jesus? ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 19:21; TheDesire of Ages, p. 519.

Questions:1. When did the young

man memorize thecommandments?

2. What was the darkspot of sin in hisheart?

3. What did Jesus tellhim to do about it?

How About You: Does memorizing the

commandments make usobedient boys and girls?

Obey the com-mandments—don’t justmemorize them.

Parents’ Corner:“ ‘One thing thou

lackest,’ Jesus said. ‘Ifthou wilt be perfect, goand sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, andthou shalt have treasurein heaven: and come andfollow Me.’ Christ readthe ruler’s heart. Onlyone thing he lacked, butthat was a vital princi-ple. He needed the love ofGod in the soul. Thislack, unless supplied, would prove fatal to him;his whole nature wouldbecome corrupted. Byindulgence, selfishnesswould strengthen. Thathe might receive the loveof God, his supreme loveof self must be surren-dered.” —The Desire ofAges, p. 519.

TuesdayHe Went Away Sad

If Jesus told you, Michelle, or, Aaron, if you want to go toheaven, you have to give away your house, your clothes, yourtoys and everything you have, would you do it? Would the richman do it? The Bible tells us, “When he heard the words ofJesus, he went away sad, for he was very rich.” Jesus gavethis man a test. He wanted to know, “Does he love Me morethan his money, houses and lands?” So, He asked him tochoose between the riches of heaven, or the riches of thisearth. The young man wanted to follow Jesus, but he loved hismoney and his own way more than he cared about Jesus. Yes,he wanted to be saved and go to heaven, but he thought itwas too hard to give up all the things he loved. He felt that hecould keep all the other commandments, except the one thatsays, “love your neighbor as yourself.”

At last, this rich young man said, “No, Jesus, I cannotgive You my all.” This is why he went away very sad. Wheneverwe say, No to Jesus or Mom and Dad, we are sad. But whenwe say Yes to Jesus and our parents, we are always happy. So, while the rich young ruler did not want to follow Jesus, another rich man did. Do youknow what his name was? When you get toheaven you aregoing to meetanother rich manwho took the crown ofthe rich young ruler. We will learn abouthim in next week’slesson! ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 19:22; The Desireof Ages, pp. 520-523.

Questions:1. What two choices did the

rich young man have?2. What bad choice did he

make at last?

How About You: What are some things

Jesus asks you to give toHim? Have you said Yes?

Choose to say Yes toJesus, and to Mom andDad.

Parents’ Corner:“Only those who will

become co-workers withChrist, only those who willsay, Lord, all I have and all Iam is Thine, will be acknowl-edged as sons and daugh-ters of God. All should con-sider what it means todesire heaven, and yet toturn away because of theconditions laid down. Thinkof what it means to say ‘No’to Christ. The ruler said, No,I cannot give You all. Do wesay the same?” —TheDesire of Ages, p. 523.

WednesdayWho Will Be Saved?

How do you think Jesus feels when we say No to Him? He isvery sad and so are the heavenly angels. When we say No toJesus, we are saying “Jesus I don’t care about You. I am notthankful that You died on the cross for me. I love my toys andmyself more than I love You.” This is why when the rich young rulerleft—He was very sad. Turning to His disciples, Jesus said, “It ishard for people who love riches to go to heaven!” The discipleswere not happy to hear these words from Jesus. Do you knowwhy? They were secretly wishing to become rich and to have lotsof money themselves. You see, they believed that soon Jesuswould be crowned king of Israel and they thought, “We will beprinces in His kingdom. Then we will have lots of money. Why, wewill get rid of our old fishing boats and buy big ships. And we willnever have to walk again for we will have horses and chariots toride.”

Now they were worried, if they got rich they might not besaved, so they asked, “Lord, who will be saved if it’s so hard to goto heaven?” Jesus encouraged them by saying, “The things that

are impossible with men are possiblewith God.” That meant, we

can only be saved byGod’s help, and not byourselves. So, boys andgirls, is there anythingthat you love morethan Jesus? Toys?Food? Pets? Mom andDad? Ask God to helpyou love Him morethan anything or any-body else in the world. He will hear and

answer your prayer. ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 19:23-26; TheDesire of Ages, p. 523.

Questions:1. What are we saying

when we say No toJesus?

2. Why were the disciplessurprised when Jesussaid, “It is hard forpeople who love moneyto go to heaven”?

How About You: What or whom do you

like more than Jesus?

We are saved bygrace, and not by ourgood works.

Parents’ Corner: “Peter was the first

to rally from the secretconviction wrought bythe Saviour’s words. Hethought with satisfac-tion of what he and hisbrethren had given up forChrist. ‘Behold,’ he said,‘we have forsaken all, andfollowed Thee.’ Remem-bering the conditionalpromise to the youngruler, ‘Thou shalt havetreasure in heaven,’ henow asked what he andhis companions were toreceive as a reward fortheir sacrifices.” —Christ’s Object Lessons,p. 395.

ThursdayPeter Speaks Up

Are you a quiet boy or girl, or do you always like to be thefirst to speak up in your family? Jesus had a man in His fami-ly of disciples who always liked to be the first to talk. Hisname was Peter. As Peter saw the rich young man turningaway from Jesus, he thought to himself, “I’m better than heis.” Peter said to Jesus, “Look at us. We gave up everything tofollow You, so what will be our reward?” Poor Peter. Here he wasagain thinking that he would get a better reward than othersbecause he had given up fishing to follow Jesus. He still hadto learn how to be humble. But right then, Jesus told him andthe other disciples, “Truly, I say to you, when I sit on Mythrone in heaven, you will sit next to Me on twelve thrones andwill judge the people. For anyone who has left houses, lands, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, or children for Me will geta hundred times more in heaven.”

So boys and girls, when you give up an unkind word, a self-ish act, a toy, or any other thing for Jesus, you will receive ahundred times greater reward in heaven. Do you know whatsome of the rewards will be? A beautiful white robe, a crownfull of jewels, a golden harp, a lovely mansion with a big yard

full of flowers. You won’t have to go to a petstore to buy a dog or bird, for Jesus will let

you have any of the lambs, lions, bears, horses, or rabbits as your very

own pets. Best of all,you will be able

to walk, talk, andlive near Jesus forall eternity. ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 19:27-29; Christ’sObject Lessons, pp. 394-396.

Questions:1. What did Peter ask Jesus,

and why was he feelingproud?

2. What reward will Jesusgive to His twelve disci-ples?

How About You: Do you feel you are better

than other boys and girlswho don’t know Jesus? Doyou think you can earn yourway to heaven by beinggood?

Be glad to give up allfor Jesus, but don’t worryabout the reward.

Parents’ Corner:“But Peter’s question,

‘What shall we have there-fore?’ had revealed a spiritthat uncorrected wouldunfit the disciples to bemessengers for Christ; forit was the spirit of ahireling. While they had beenattracted by the love ofJesus, the disciples werenot wholly free from Phari-saism. They still worked withthe thought of meriting areward in proportion to theirlabor. They cherished a spir-it of self-exaltation andself-complacency, and madecomparisons among them-selves. When one of themfailed in any particular, theothers indulged feelings ofsuperiority.” —Christ’sObject Lessons, p. 396.

FridayHow to Be Happy

The rich young ruler in our story never found the way of hap-piness because he did not share his money with others. Here is astory of three boys who learned the way of happiness.

A man lived with his family on a small farm. They were all verypoor, but the father was working very hard so that he could givehis family food and clothes. Every day before starting his work inthe fields, he would take off his boots and leave them by thefence. This kept them from wearing out too soon.

One day, toward evening, three boys passed by and saw hisboots sitting there. They knew that he would soon put them onand go home. One boy, whose name was Jonathan, said, “Let’s fillthem up with mud. Then we can hide in the bushes to see what hewill do.” But James said, “I think that is mean. I thought I sawyou with quite a bit of money today. Why not put a little of thatin?” Jonathan thought a minute. “OK, that would be better,” hesaid. So he put ten dollars in each boot. Then the boys hid behindsome bushes, and watched for the farmer to come. Soon theyheard the rustling of grass. Sure enough, he was coming! As heput on one boot, he thought he felt something in it. So he took itoff, and turned it upside down. To his great surprise, a ten-dollarbill fell out. At once he raised his hands to thank God, and askedHim to bless the one who put it there. Then he put his otherboot on. Again he was surprised to feel something. He took itoff, and there was another ten-dollar bill! Kneeling down heagain thanked God for remembering him when he needed help.

As the boys walked home, Jonathan said he had learnedsomething very important. The way to be happy is to makeothers happy. ❖

The Little Rich ManSunday

Memory Verse: “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save thatwhich was lost.” Luke 19:10.

Jesus Comes to JerichoHow would you feel if one morning you heard on the radio,

“Jesus is coming to our town today.” I am sure you would be veryexcited. Why, you would probably go with your mom to the mainstreet, and wait for Jesus to come by. The people who lived inJericho heard that Jesus was coming to their town. Oh, howexcited they were! Soon everyone was talking, “Did you hear thatJesus is coming to our city? He is the One Who raised Lazarusfrom the dead and healed the lepers. He even makes blind peopleto see.”

But the most excited man in all of Jericho was Zacchaeus. He was a little rich man who collected taxes. Nobody in Jericholiked him because he was a cheater. Let’s say that when FarmerJohn was supposed to pay $100 for taxes, Zacchaeus would askhim to pay $200. Do you know what Zacchaeus would do with theextra $100? He would put it in his own pocket! The people ofJericho hated Zacchaeus for stealing their money, but nobodycould stop him.

Zacchaeus was a cheater, but he did not like being that way. Some time ago, he had heard John the Baptist preaching, and heknew that one of the ten commandments said it was wrong tosteal. Now that he had heard that Jesus was coming to town, hethought, “I must see Jesus, for I am a terrible sinner. Maybe Hecan help me to begin a new life.” ❖

Lesson Helps: The Desire of Ages, pp.552, 553.

Question:1. Who was Zacchaeus

and what did he do?2. Why was Zacchaeus

happy that Jesus wascoming to town?

MondayA Parade in Jericho

Before Zacchaeus had heard that Jesus was coming totown, he had already started to do what was right. He wentto Farmer John’s house and said something like, “I am sorrythat I cheated you out of $100. I will give you $400 back toshow you that I am really sorry. Will you forgive me?” AsZacchaeus went from house to house, trying to pay peopleback, some of them wouldn’t believe him. Some even slammedthe door in his face. Poor Zacchaeus was sad to see that it ishard to make things right once you’ve done wrong. O how hewished to see Jesus! He had heard that Jesus loved everyoneand forgave their sins.

Have you ever been to a parade in which a very importantperson was going to appear? Remember how noisy and crowd-ed it was? Since you were short compared to all the grown-ups, it was hard for you to see.Maybe you tried to squeeze your wayinto a spot but people wouldn’t giveyou a chance. If so, you’ll understandhow Zacchaeus felt.

On the day that Jesus came toJericho, a big parade of people werestanding in the streets. They wereall looking for the best spot, but no onewould give Zacchaeus a chance. Since hewas a short man, he could not seeabove all their heads. What should hedo? Next to the road where Jesuswould pass by was a tall fig tree. “Iwill run ahead of the crowd,” thoughtZacchaeus “and climb up in thebranches of that tree. Then I will beable to see Jesus as He passes.” ❖

TuesdayJesus Knows His Name

The parade that passed through Jericho was noisy like anyother parade you have seen. People were talking; some wereshouting, “Welcome Jesus,” while the priests and rulers werearguing with each other. As Jesus walked in the middle of thenoisy crowd, He heard the soft cry of Zacchaeus’ heart.Suddenly, Jesus stopped under the fig tree. The crowd stoppedalso. Jesus raised His head and looked up into the tree. With lov-ing words He said, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for today Imust stay at your house.” Zacchaeus was so surprised to hearJesus speak his name. “How does Jesus know that I am in thetree? How does He know my name?” he wondered.

Zacchaeus hurried down from thetree as fast as he could. Standingbefore Jesus and all the people of

Jericho, he said how sorry he wasfor being a cheater. “Lord, I will give

half of my money to the poor. And if Ihave cheated anybody, I will pay himback four times as much as I havetaken.” Do you think that it washard for Zacchaeus to give away his

riches? Did he love money as muchas the rich young man in last week’s

lesson? Not really. WhenZacchaeus chose to do what was

right, then it was easy to giveaway his riches. Zacchaeus choseJesus instead of his money, andnow he was the happiest man in theworld. ❖

Did you wonder how Jesus knew Zacchaeus’ name? How didHe know to look up in the tree? Jesus is the Son of God. Heknows everything. He knew that Zacchaeus was sufferingbecause he was doing wrong and because others disliked him.Jesus also knows everything about you. He knows the goodthings you do, and the bad sins you have. Go to Jesus likeZacchaeus did. Tell Him what you did wrong. Ask Him to forgiveyou, and tell Him how you will make things right.

Jesus was so glad to hear that Zacchaeus was truly sorryfor his sins, and that he would pay back all the money he hadwrongfully taken. On this happy day, Jesus told Zacchaeus infront of the big crowd of people, “This day is salvation come tothis house, for Zacchaeus is also a son of Abraham.” Jesuswanted everyone in Jericho to know that He forgave Zacchaeushis sins, so they could forgive him also.

Remember how in last week’s lesson the disciples were upsetwhen the rich young ruler wouldn’t give up his riches and followJesus? They even asked Jesus, “Who then can be saved?” Nowthey saw how Zacchaeus, the little rich man, was saved. Sincehe had learned to love Jesus more than all his riches, he wouldtake the place of the rich young ruler in heaven. Zacchaeus willwear the crown that the rich young ruler could have had. “Thethings which are impossible with men are possible with God.” ❖

Lesson Helps: Luke 19:9, 10; The Desire ofAges, p. 555.

Questions:1. What did Zacchaeus tell

Jesus?2. Whose crown will

Zacchaeus wear in heav-en?

How About You:Do you have a hard time

forgiving others when theyask your forgiveness?

Forgive others.

Parents’ Corner:“When the rich young

ruler had turned away fromJesus, the disciples hadmarveled at their Master’ssaying, ‘How hard is it forthem that trust in riches toenter into the kingdom ofGod!’ They had exclaimedone to another, ‘Who thencan be saved?’ Now they hada demonstration of thetruth of Christ’s words, ‘Thethings which are impossiblewith men are possible withGod.’ Mark 10:24, 26; Luke18:27. They say how, throughthe grace of God, a richman could enter into thekingdom.” —The Desire ofAges, p. 555.

ThursdayJesus Visits Zacchaeus

On that happy day, the house of Zacchaeus became the mostimportant one in all Jericho. Neighbors and friends crowdedinside so they could hear what Jesus would say. Jesus went tothe house of Zacchaeus, and blessed his wife and children, andtold them how to be saved. That day Zacchaeus was the happi-est man in the world. For many years he was not allowed to enterthe temple to worship God, for everyone hated him. He had nofriends. But today there was in his home a special meeting andJesus was the preacher.

While Zacchaeus, his family, and neighbors were happy aboutthe visit of Jesus, the Pharisees were unhappy. They were whis-pering to each other, “Jesus is visiting the house of a sinner.”What foolish people they were! They should have been happy thatnow Zacchaeus was an honest man, and would no longer stealfrom them, but they complained instead.

You and I are also sinners like Zacchaeus. We may not becheating people of their money, but we may be talking behindsomebody’s back. We might be fighting with our brother or sister,or being unhelpful to Mother. All these sins separate us fromGod. Jesus loves sinners. This is why He came to die on the

cross and save us. But Jesus doesnot like the sins we do. He

wants to show us how tostop sinning. Will you letHim? ❖

Lesson Helps: Ezekiel 33:15, 16; TheDesire of Ages, p. 556.

Questions:1. What happened at the

house of Zacchaeus?2. While everyone was

happy that day, whowas unhappy, andwhy?

How About You:Do you complain like

the Pharisees? Do youthink Jesus likes it whenyou complain?

Accept Jesus, andlet Him be a guest inyour heart.

Parents’ Corner:“It is when Christ is

received as a personalSaviour that salvationcomes to the soul.Zacchaeus had receivedJesus, not merely as apassing guest in hishome, but as One toabide in the soul temple. The scribes and Phar-isees accused him as asinner, they murmuredagainst Christ forbecoming his guest, butthe Lord recognized himas a son of Abraham. For ‘they which are offaith, the same are thechildren of Abraham.’Galatians 3:7.” —TheDesire of Ages, p. 556.

FridayYou Can’t Cheat God

Nick took his cousin Grace along to keep him companywhile he watered and fed his neighbor’s dog.

“I don’t think you’re doing your work very well,” said Grace.“Shouldn’t you clean the dishes out first? And I don’t thinkyou are giving the poor doggy enough to eat.”

“That’s all right,” said Nick. “In a few minutes no one willknow if I cleaned the dishes first, or fed the dog. All the evi-dence will be taken care of by the dog himself!”

“But, isn’t that cheating?”“Maybe it is,” said Nick.“It isn’t like most cheating, though.”“That’s not the way to look at it,” said Grace. “If it’s

cheating, it’s cheating; you know that. You can’t excuse itbecause it isn’t the worst kind of cheating.”

“But the man won’t ever know,” said Nick.“He may not,” said Grace solemnly, “but God will. You can’t

cheat God.”Nick stopped for a second and began thinking. Then he

said, “You are right. I’m glad you said that, Grace. I’mgoing to go back and do it right. There won’t

be any cheating this time.”True to his word, the dog had

clean, fresh water, and abig bowl of dog food. AndNick felt a whole lot bet-ter. We hope you willalways remember thatno one can cheat God.❖

Workers in theVineyard

SundayMemory Verse:

“Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever isright I will give you. And they went their way.”Matthew 20:4.

Looking for WorkersDo you know what a vineyard is? A vineyard is a large

grape farm. Farmers grow grapes for eating, making juice, andalso for raisins. Some farmers make wine which is a poison forour body. They do this because they don’t believe that ourbody is the temple of God. Our lesson this week is about afarmer who had a large vineyard with thousands of grapevines. Since his vineyard was too large, he could not do all thework by himself, but had to hire workers to help him.

In the olden days, people who needed work would go to themarket in the city and wait for someone to come and hirethem. So, early in the morning, the farmer went to the marketand he saw there men who had nothing to do. “Will you comeand work in my vineyard today? I will give you each a penny foryour work.” A penny in those days was worth more than ourpenny. “We will be glad to work for you,” they told the farmer, and went to his vineyard at once.

Do you know who is the owner of the vineyard in our story? It is our heavenly Father. ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 20:1, 2; Christ’sObject Lessons, p. 396.

Questions:1. Where did the grape

farmer go to find work-ers?

2. How much money wouldhe give them for a full dayof work?

3. Who is the owner of thevineyard in this story?

How About You:What is some work you

do in your family? Do you doit cheerfully?

Be a happy worker inyour family.

Parents’ Corner: “The householder’s deal-

ing with the workers in hisvineyard represents God’sdealing with the human fam-ily. It is contrary to the cus-toms that prevail amongmen. In worldly business, compensation is givenaccording to the workaccomplished. The laborerexpects to be paid only thatwhich he earns. But in theparable, Christ was illus-trating the principles of Hiskingdom—a kingdom not ofthis world. He is not con-trolled by any human stan-dard.” —Christ’s ObjectLessons, pp. 396, 397.

MondayThe Owner Gets More Workers

Did you ever start sweeping the yard, and thought youwould finish it quickly? But soon you realized it would take youall day. So you had to get help from your brother or sister. Thisis what happened to the farmer in our story. His farm was sobig, and he had so much work, that soon he had to go to themarket place again to get more helpers. He found other menstanding in the market, waiting for someone to give them work. The farmer told them, “Come and work in my vineyard. Whateveris fair, I will pay you.”

The new workers went to the vineyard to work. They did notworry how much money they would make. “The farmer is an hon-est man,” they thought. “He will pay us what is fair.” Again thefarmer saw that there was so much work that all his workerscould not finish the job. So, at lunch and again in the afternoonhe went to the market to get more helpers. Each time he foundmen who had nothing to do, but who were willing to work. He hiredthem and toldthem, “In theevening when youfinish your work, Iwill pay you whatis right.” Thesenew workerstrusted that thefarmer would paythem what wasright. They didn’task him, “Howmuch money arewe going tomake?” ❖

12

Lesson Helps: Matthew 20:3-5;Christ’s ObjectLessons, p. 397.

Questions:1. How many more

times did the farmerhave to go to themarket to hire work-ers?

2. Why didn’t they askhim, “How muchmoney are we goingto make”?

How About You: When Mom and Dad

ask you to sweep theporch or take out thetrash, do you do it fora reward? Or do youwork, because you wantto help them?

Work hard andcheerfully, not worryingabout a reward.

Parents’ Corner:“In the parable the

first laborers agreed towork for a stipulatedsum, and they receivedthe amount specified, nothing more. Thoselater hired believed themaster’s promise,‘Whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.’They showed their con-fidence in him by askingno question in regard towages. They trusted tohis justice and equity. They were rewarded, notaccording to theamount of their labor, but according to thegenerosity of his pur-pose.” —Christ’s ObjectLessons, p. 397.

TuesdaySome Workers Are Unhappy

The sun was going down and still there was much work tobe done. “I need more men,” said the farmer. “I will go again tothe market place. Maybe I will find enough men to help mepick all the grapes before the day is over.” So once again hewent to the marketplace and found men who were happy tocome and work.

Shortly after the men started working it began to getdark, and they could not work any more. These last helpersworked only one hour. The farmer called one of his servantsand said, “Call the workers and pay them. Give a penny toevery man who worked for me today, even the ones who workedonly one hour.” The men who came to work last were surprisedto get a whole penny for their work. They were thankful thatthe farmer was so generous even though they didn’t deserveall that money.

The workers who came early in the morning were angry. They had worked all day in the hot sun for only one penny. “Itis not fair,” they told the farmer. “These men who came lastworked only one hour and you paid them as much as you paidus.” By being jealous, these men showed that they did notwork because they wanted to help the farmer, but becausethey wanted to make money. ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 20:6-12; Christ’sObject Lessons, p. 397.

Questions:1. Why were the workmen

who came last happy?2. Why were those who

worked all day angry?

How About You: Do you complain when

you get more work than yourbrother or sister?

Don’t be jealous ofothers’ rewards.

Parents’ Corner:“Not the amount of labor

performed or its visibleresults but the spirit inwhich the work is done makesit of value with God. Thosewho came into the vineyardat the eleventh hour werethankful for an opportunityto work. Their hearts were fullof gratitude to the one whohad accepted them; andwhen at the close of the daythe householder paid themfor a full day’s work, theywere greatly surprised. Theyknew they had not earnedsuch wages. And the kind-ness expressed in the coun-tenance of their employerfilled them with joy. . . . Thusit is with the sinner who, knowing his unworthiness, has entered the Master’svineyard at the eleventh hour. His time of service seems soshort, he feels that he isundeserving of reward; but heis filled with joy that Godhas accepted him at all. Heworks with a humble, trustingspirit, thankful for the privi-lege of being a coworker withChrist. This spirit Goddelights to honor.” —Christ’sObject Lessons, p. 397.

WednesdayJesus Reads Our Hearts

Do you like to brag when you do something well? The workmenwho came to work early in the morning were bragging. They thoughtthey were better workers than those who came last, but thefarmer knew what was in their hearts. He told them, “Friends, I amdoing nothing wrong to you. You agreed to work for one penny, thentake your money and go home. I want to pay those workers whocame last the same as I paid you. Can I not do what I wish with myown things, or are you upset because I am generous?”

When people hire others to work for them, they pay them forthe hours they worked and no more. With God it is not so. Helooks not so much at how many hours we work but how we feelabout our work. Are we happy to work? Do we clean our roomcheerfully? Are we thankful that we can take out the trash forMother and sweep the sidewalk for Father? Are we glad to setthe table for the family? Do we ask for a reward or do we trustthat Mother and Father will reward us if needed? God is lookingfor boys and girls who will work happily and thankfully. Are youone of them? ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 20:13-15;Christ’s Object Lessons,pp. 398-402.

Questions:1. What did the owner

tell the jealous work-ers?

2. Why did the owner ofthe vineyard act dif-ferently than otherbosses would today?

How About You: Do you like to show

off how you can dothings better than oth-ers? Do you like to bragabout how well you do atschool?

Don’t brag aboutanything you have done.

Parents’ Corner:“It is not the length

of time we labor but ourwillingness and fidelity inthe work that makes itacceptable to God. In allour service a full surren-der of self is demanded. The smallest duty donein sincerity and self-forgetfulness is morepleasing to God thanthe greatest work whenmarred with self-seeking.He looks to see howmuch of the spirit ofChrist we cherish, andhow much of the likenessof Christ our workreveals. ThursdayThe Last Shall Be First

Do you always like to be the first in line? Are you alwaysthe first to put food on your plate? Do you like being the firstto hug Dad when he comes from work? If you like being first, watch out, for you are a selfish boy or girl. When Jesus fin-ished telling the story about the farmer, He told the people,“The last will be first, and the first last.” Boys and girls whoalways want to be first will not make it to heaven.

When we let others go first, we can be sure that Jesus isin our hearts. When we are thankful to help Mom and Dad, notfor a reward but because that is our job, we are trueChristians. Did you know that when we do our work cheerfully, and when we are kind to our brother or sister, we are moreprecious to Jesus than the greatest missionary? We areworth more than the greatest martyr who dies for Jesus.

Jesus and the angels know how hard it is for you to letothers go first. They see how hard it is for you to be unselfish. This is why you can be sure that they write every victory youhave in the Book of Remembrance. So, don’t give up! Be hum-ble. Be cheerful. Be thankful. Be helpful and unselfish. Let oth-ers go first and Jesus will open heaven’s golden gates for you

very soon. In heaven your reward will be as great as thatof the apostle Paul orPeter. ❖

Lesson Helps: Matthew 20:16; Christ’sObject Lessons, pp. 403,404.

Questions:1. What did Jesus tell the

people when He finishedthe story of the vineyard?

2. When are you more pre-cious to Jesus than thegreatest missionary?

How About You: What are some things

you like to be the first todo? Why is it wrong to wantto be the first and have thebest?

Let others go first.

Parents’ Corner“Oh, how different are the

standards by which God andmen measure character. . . .[God] sees the wholeheart-ed devotion to His service. He has noted the hours ofhard battle with self—battlethat won the victory. All thisGod and angels know. A bookof remembrance is writtenbefore Him for them thatfear the Lord and that thinkupon His name.”—Christ’sObject Lessons, pp. 403,404.

Which one of you would like to do it? I will paya quarter for each sweeping.” “Only a quarter!” said Mike. “Whowould work for a quarter?” “I will,” said Bob. So every day whenUncle Roy was done working in the shop, Bob would take an oldbroom and sweep. One day Uncle Roy took Mike and Bob to town. After he bought some lumber he took the boys to a toy store.“What nice kites!” said Mike. “I wish that I could buy one.” “It’sonly two dollars,” said the cashier. “I haven’t a quarter,” saidMike. “I have four dollars,” said Bob. “How did you get so much?”asked Mike. “By sweeping the shop,” answered Bob. ❖

Mary Shows Her Lovefor Jesus

SundayMemory Verse:

“We love him, because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19.

A Special Dinner for JesusHave you ever been curious about something? The people, who

were on their way to the Passover were curious to talk toLazarus, for they had heard that he had been raised from thedead. Many also came to Bethany to see Jesus, who would bespending the Sabbath there. They had heard how Jesus hadraised Lazarus from the dead. These curious people wanted toask Lazarus what had happened to him while he was dead. TheBible tells us, “the dead know nothing, so when they asked him,“What happened to you when you were dead?” Lazarus had noth-ing to say. But he told them the wonderful story of Jesus, theSon of God.

While Jesus was at Bethany, a man named Simon invited Himto his house. Jesus had healed Simon from leprosy. Now hewished to thank Jesus by making a party for Him and His disci-ples. Many important people came to Simon’s party. Lazarus,Mary and Martha were also there. But most of the people theredid not love Jesus. During the dinner, Simon sat on one side ofJesus and Lazarus on the other. Martha was serving food to theguests, and Mary was sitting nearby listening to every word ofJesus. ❖

MondayThe Broken Perfume Bottle

Did anyone ever do something kind for you, and maybeyou wanted to give them a special present? Some time ago,Mary, the sister of Lazarus, had done a great wrong. Thepriests hated her and wanted to kill her, but Jesus forgaveher sins and saved her life. Jesus had also brought herbrother Lazarus back to life. For all these things Mary wasso thankful, that she decided to buy a beautiful present forJesus. So, she saved and saved her money until she hadenough to buy a box of very expensive perfume. This perfumecost so much that Mary probably had to work and save onewhole year for it.

While Jesus was visiting her home, she heard Him saythat soon He would die on the cross. Like the people in hercountry, Mary was going to put perfume on the dead body ofJesus before they buried Him. But now at Simon’s dinner, many people were whispering, “Jesus will be crowned king.”Mary was so happy to hear this good news that she thought,“Why should I wait to show my love for Jesus when He isdead? I’ll show Him my love today.” So, while Jesus and theother guests were eating, Mary slipped quietly around thetable to His side. In her hands she carried the box ofexpensive perfume. She quietly broke the bottle andpoured it on the head and feet of Jesus. Kneelingat His feet, she was crying and thanking Him forHis great love. Mary washed Jesus’ feet with theperfume and her tears, but what would she useto wipe His feet? She wouldn’t use a towel, forthat was not good enough for her Jesus. Puttingdown her long, beautiful hair, she began to wipe thefeet of Jesus with her hair. That was the best towelshe had for her dear, loving Jesus. ❖

Her grief was turned tojoy, and she was eager to befirst in honoring her Lord.Breaking her box of oint-ment, she poured its con-tents upon the head andfeet of Jesus; then, as sheknelt weeping, moisteningthem with her tears, shewiped His feet with her long, flowing hair.” —The Desire ofAges, p. 559.

TuesdayA Gift That Filled the Room

Did you ever want to give a gift to someone, but didn’t wantanyone to see it? Mary also didn’t want anyone to see what shewas doing for Jesus, but the perfume had such a strong smell, that soon everyone in the whole room noticed it. Soon all theguests were looking at Mary. Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, waswhispering and pointing at her. He said to the other disciples,“She should have given the money to the poor instead of buyingthis expensive perfume.” Judas was a mean and selfish man. Hepretended to be a friend of Jesus, but he was not.

When Mary heard that Judas and the other men at the partywere making fun of her, she trembled. She thought to herself,“Oh, no. What will my sister Martha say? She will be upset atme also.” You know how embarrassed you feel when everyone isstaring at you. That is how poor Mary felt. She wished shecould hide from everyone. Just as she was ready to sneak outquietly from the room, she heard the kind words of Jesus,“Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her?” Speaking a little

louder Jesus said, “She has done a good work for Me.You will always have the poor people with you, but

you won’t always have Me.” ❖

Wednesday Judas Is a Thief

How would you feel if you found out one day that one ofyour brothers or sisters was a thief? Jesus had a thief in Hisfamily of disciples, and that made Him so sad. Judas waskeeping a little bag with savings for Jesus and all the disci-ples. So when anyone gave them money, Judas would take careof it. If the disciples needed money for food, Judas would takesome out of the bag. But Judas was not an honest man.Often when no one was watching, he would steal some moneyout of the bag and put it in his own pocket. The disciples didnot know that he was a thief, but Jesus did. Judas was upsetthat Mary did not give the money to him. He would have put itin the bag, and later taken some for himself.

While Mary made Jesus happy withher gift of love, the disciples made Himsad. For three years they were livingtogether with Jesus in the same

house. Every day they worked withHim, but never did they thank Himfor all His kindness and love. Noneof them, not even John or Peter, had ever given Him a special gift.Yet now, some of them were com-plaining together with Judas!Later when Jesus would be hang-ing on the cross, they would besorry for their unthankfulness. But then it would be too late. Theywouldn’t be able to say, “Thankyou, Jesus.” ❖

Parents’ Corner:“Judas was treasurer for

the disciples, and from theirlittle store he had secretlydrawn for his own use, thusnarrowing down theirresources to a meager pit-tance. He was eager to putinto the bag all that hecould obtain. The treasure inthe bag was often drawnupon to relieve the poor; andwhen something that Judasdid not think essential wasbought, he would say, Why isthis waste? why was notthe cost of this put intothe bag that I carry for thepoor? Now the act of Marywas in such marked con-trast to his selfishnessthat he was put to shame.. . . Judas had no heart forthe poor. Had Mary’s oint-ment been sold, and theproceeds fallen into his pos-session, the poor would havereceived no benefit.” —TheDesire of Ages, p. 559.

ThursdayJesus Likes to Receive Gifts

Do you like receiving gifts? Most of us like to get presents, especially from people we love. When Jesus lived on this earth, afew people gave Him presents. Whenever someone did Him a favoror gave Him a gift, He would always thank them. Sometimes a lit-tle boy or girl would pick a flower for Jesus. He would gladly takeit and say, “Thank you.” Then He would write their name in theBook of Life.

Jesus was so happy with Mary’s gift of love that He wantedall boys and girls and moms and dads to know about it. This iswhy He said, “Wherever this gospel shall be preached throughoutthe whole world, let them tell the story of Mary and her perfume

bottle.” What about you? Do you remember to

FridayPaying Off Mother and Father

A little boy of six years once said to his mother, “When youget old, and want someone to read to you, I will pay you off.”

Little Henry’s mother had been in the habit of reading to him,and on this Sabbath day she had read a long time out of theBible and a Sabbath-school paper. The boy could read a little tohimself, and he thought how one day he might return to Motherall that she had done for him.

“I will pay you off, Mother,” he said, looking up into her facewith childish satisfaction, as if a new thought from heaven hadbeen sent down to light up the little world of his soul. His moth-er held him close to her heart with a delight that seemed tosay, “I am more than paid off already.”

Children, have you ever thought how much you owe to yourmother and father? Their thoughts and acts of love are many,oh, so many! How often has your mother washed and dressedyou, rocked you on her knee, carried you in her arms, watchedover you in sleep, guided your baby steps and corrected youwhen you did wrong? She has made your clothes and preparedyour food, tucked you snugly into bed night after night, andcared for you when you were sick.

Sometimes when she was very tired and felt like lying down, she read to you instead. She sat patiently by your side andtaught you the alphabet and to spell. She taught you to readand to pray. She has taught you beautiful hymns. She hasprayed for you when no one but God knew about it. She hasprayed with you. She has pointed you to Christ, and led the wayherself by her godly example. Do you not see how much you oweto your mother?

And what about your father? Has he not been good to you, too? Who buys your clothes, and gets fuel to keep you warm?Who gets the food for mama to cook? Yes, papa works hard alsoto provide for you the comforts of life. So you owe him, too.

Then remember that it is God who gave you a kind papa andmama. So, you are really in debt to God for all things. How canyou repay Him? There is only one thing you can do, and that is,give yourself to God, and obey Him in all you say and do. Will youdo this, dear children, if you have not already done so? ❖

“In every thinggive thanks: forthis is the will ofGod in ChristJesus concerningyou.” 1 Thessalonians5:18.

How to Greet a GuestA guest was a very special person in a Bible-time home. It was consid-

ered good manners to treat him in a very special way. Below are some ofthe things a good host would remember to do for his guest.

Since roads weredusty and most peoplewalked, a good hostwould see that hisguest’s feet werewashed. If the host hada servant, he would havethe servant do it. If not,the host might do ithimself.

Saying “hello” was sometimesvery long and involved. The hostwould often kiss his guest.Greetings were exchanged, suchas “Peace be to you,” or “May yoube happy.” These would be repeat-ed over and over again for a longtime.

When the guest wasready to go, the hostwould try to persuadehim to stay for awhilelonger. Cleopas did thiswhen Jesus tried to gofarther than his home(Luke 24:28, 29).

When a guest final-ly left, the host oftenwent with him forawhile. Abraham wentwith his guests(Genesis 18:16).

Anointing a guestwith oil was anothersign of good manners. The host would poursome sweet scentedwater or oil on thehead of the guest.

When Jesus ate with Simon the Pharisee, He scolded Simon for not being agood host. “You gave Me no water for My feet, you gave Me no kiss, and you didnot anoint My head with oil,” Jesus said (Luke 7:45-47). But the sinful woman haddone all these things.
