The month of May brings itstime of memory. It also means
for some a time to leave thesouthland for a return to the north.Whatever we do, we remember Mayas a glorious time of spring flow-ers, blossoming dogwoods and newleaves coming on the trees. May isand always will be the month of joyand pleasure.
May is an occasion to remind usof Mother’s Day. Being a mothertoday; and being a mother whenwe were children, seems like twodifferent worlds. Mothers meanfamilies. Since ages past familieshave been the primary unit of allsociety. It was once said, “Train upa child the way he should go and hewill not depart from it.” That was aproverb held sacred within the fam-ily but how valid is it today, I won-der, for our modern families?
May also brings us to the obser-vance of Memorial Day, which al-ways has been a time for patrioticcelebration. Loyalty to country hasbeen one of those virtues deeplyembedded in our nation’s history.It is our privilege to honor ourbrave military heroes; and to re-member the sacrifices they havemade to protect and defend us.None of us likes wars and we wishthey could be avoided; but therecome times when there is no otherway.
As it was said to Esther in thatancient Biblical book of Daniel,“For such a time were you born.”So, we live with what is ours andgive thanks for what we have andpray, too, that we in our time mayleave an influence of hope and cour-age that will be remembered.

In this issue you will find sev-eral pages of Sahib Shrine Restau-rant menus. This is an effort to getyou to pay attention to the widerange of offerings in our food andbeverage department. The onething that is missing is YOU! YourDivan is working hard to find away to appeal to members to sup-port our restaurant.
The two subjects discussed mostfrequently around Sahib is mem-bership and member participation.The Divan just doesn’t understandwhy you don’t support the restau-rant and lounge. For sure, there aprobably many reasons, but whatthey need the most is for YOU tocommunicate with them. If you area potential Sahib restaurant goer,what keeps you from eating there?Price, distance, service, food qual-ity—why aren’t you coming? TheDivan can’t address any of thesereasons, if they don’t understandyour concerns about them. Pleaseconsider discussing this with yourcircle of influence, and pass on yourfeelings to the Divan members, per-haps if they really understood howmembers feel about our restaurantand lounge they could get a betterhandle on how to change the mo-mentum. Sahib has the last temple-managed full-service restaurant inFlorida, if the lack of utilizationpersists, we could lose our restau-rant and lounge!

Nobles,
It’s May, and one third of the year has flown by! Our nobles and their ladieshave been extremely busy volunteering the past two months. Starting withthe ballgames—now over; the Sarasota County Fair—now over; and in Aprilthe Sahib Shrine Circus—now over. Most of our snowbirds are going north forthe summer and we think things will start to quiet down for a while. Well,think again! Some of us will be returning from the Potentate’s spring cruisefor a day or so, only to be off again to the east coast because FSA is comingthe first week of this month and we will be travelling to see the competitionthat will include some of our units vying for first place. I hope that the unitswill be successful and bring home a trophy or two.
We will of course have our May Birthday/Anniversary dinner dance. OurStated Meeting has been pushed forward to May 19 because the NationalSojourners will be in town on May 12, and we will have the featured speakerat our luncheon.
The third week of this month is the start of the Grand Council of LOS. It’s areal honor to host the Grand Council in Sarasota. This will also bring ourown Grand High Priestess Lady Jennie Crawford back to us after a year oftravelling throughout the various chapters of LOS. Lady Jennie has beensuperb this past year and we are very proud of her. We will also have twoPotentates’ Balls to attend this month—Mahi in Miami and Bahia in Or-lando.
The end of May will bring the Florida Grand Lodge meeting in Orlando. Afterhis installation, the Grand Master will be conducting a Ceremonial of all thecandidates that all the temples in Florida can produce for this event.
When you stop to catch your breath this month, contact a brother you haven’tseen for a while. It will make your day as well as his. See you around Sahib.

This had been a very troubling year for me. Icontracted double pneumonia, bronchitis, and a
sinus infection all at the same time and experienceda very long recovery period. February and Marchwere much of a blur. It seems many others experi-enced similar fates and I truly hope their recoverywas much quicker than mine was.
This having been said, the Shrine activities movedahead with an accelerating pace in March. I visitedMcKechnie Field once and greeted the Gulf and Mana-tee Shrine Club nobles, ladies and friends. All wereworking tirelessly as usual. This was an unusual yearand leaders in both clubs worked through their prob-lems in a very professional manner. Nobles in bothclubs represented the Shrine and themselves by com-pleting a successful year. Spring training is overexcept for one more day in which the Manatee ShrineClub accepted an invitation from the Pirate organiza-tion to help them by working this day.
The county fair was also a challenge this year. Theleaders had a difficult time filling all of the slots, butfinally made it through to the end. The weather wasperfect; at least this was a positive. I’m sure all arehappy that the county fair is over for another year.
I have been working with several very qualifiednobles namely Ken Shipley and Bob Trudel to get thisyear’s circus up and running in a very short time frame.The two nobles mentioned, with Ken taking the lead,have pulled this all together and hopefully we will havehad a very successful circus. This year it was outside inthe front parking area at Robarts Arena, in CircusHollywood’s tent and was held on Friday, Saturdayand Sunday, April 8-10. The Divan ladies plus somefriends sold tickets at the circus trailer and the circusoffice at Sahib Shrine also sold circus tickets.
Some of us are looking forward to the Potentate’sCruise in late April and early May for respite andrejuvenation. Then back to the FSA and into the fray.
Some of our key players were out of commission;Oriental Guide Connie Jacobi for four weeks withfoot surgery and Ill. Sir Oscar Cloutier, PP with backsurgery. In addition, Chief Rabban Charles Levan isrecovering from bone marrow cancer after surgery atMoffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. We pray for ournobles who have serious recoveries ahead and hopethey are short.
We want to wish all of our nobles heading north avery safe journey home. We will miss you in the
coming months. Have a great summer and we willlook forward to seeing you in the fall, so don’t forgetto come back.
As we wind down in the next five months, I wantto emphasize the fact that Sahib will be open forbusiness. We urge you to attend our great Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dances held the second Tuesdayof every month. If you are having a birthday oranniversary, why not come to Sahib and have anenjoyable evening with friends? You may even belucky and win a bottle of wine or champagne for yourtable or a gift certificate to the Sahib restaurant.
Our Thursday lunch is a perfect time to come seeall your fraternity brothers and trade “war stories.”
We have revised our Wednesday and Friday nightmenus in the restaurant and have added some sand-wiches and salads. These are all at very reasonableand competitive prices. Come on in and give us a try.
My point is very simple. To succeed we need you toplease consider coming out and supporting your fra-ternity. If there is a reason why you don’t want tocome to the temple, please let us know, we may beable to correct it. We appreciate all input from ournobles.
We have one of the best temples in Shrinedombecause we have the most dedicated, hard workingnobles who work diligently to insure our success. Aswe go into the summer months, it would be veryhelpful if you could manage to attend some or any ofour functions. We would love to see you.
Well, recovery took longer than expected, but I amoff and crawling to the many activities this
month. First, we have FSA and all the activities thatinvolves. The stated meeting on the 19th, Club/UnitHead meeting the 21st, the Mahi Ball and the BahiaBall, ending the month with the Grand Lodge ofFlorida. The fun never stops.
Membership continues to be our primary concern.Several nobles are working hard on the membershipcommittee trying to recruit new nobles and keep the
ones we already have. Everyone needs to get involvedin this activity.
Thanks to Carroll Scribner for all he has done forHospital Days and Monday Night Bar Bingo calling.Thanks to Marylou Ellis also for Monday Night BarBingo calling.
I want to thank all those who called and sent cardsduring my recent stay at Moffitt Cancer Center. Theprayers are really appreciated and helpful.

Howdy, y’all! Here’s the latest from “Behind theOuthouse.” A few cuzzins went to Hillbilly Days
in Pikeville, Kentucky to promote our Imperial Con-vention here this year.
Since 1977, Pike County has been celebratingHillbilly Days. This nationally known annual eventis a fundraiser to benefit the Shriner’s Hospital forChildren in Lexington, Kentucky. Held in downtownPikeville in April, this is one festival you’ve got to seeto believe! Started by Howard “Dirty Ear” Strattonand “Shady” Grady Kinney, two Shriners with theHillbilly Clan Outhouse No. 2 in Pikeville, Kentucky.The festival is attended by over 100,000 folks andcontinues to get bigger and better each year. Mr.Stratton said that for about as long as he can remem-ber both he and Mr. Kinney wanted a festival in PikeCounty. They got the idea for Hillbilly Days in 1976while going to another festival in Portsmouth, Ohioand upon returning, they started their work. In 1977,they got all Hillbilly Clans together in one place, PikeCounty, Kentucky. Mr. Kinney has unfortunatelypassed, but his memory lives on in every Hillbillyheart. A monument honoring Mr. Kinney has beenplaced in the Pikeville City Park.
There is something for everyone at Hillbilly Days,with hundreds of food and craft booths, a huge carni-val and music throughout the town. Y’all will beassured of having three days of outrageous fun, foodand frolic.
Hillbilly Days might offer loads of fun for allparticipants, but there is true meaning behind theevent. For 35 years, Shriners have faithfully traveledall over the United States and Canada to help ourchildren. So, when you come upon Shriners all deckedout in Hillbilly garb or driving one of those modifiedHillbilly limousines, remember the children whoselives are being enhanced.

We completed all the games and had a good time atthe Sahib Circus and the Birthday Anniversary Din-ner Dance in April. I would like to thank all those thatworked and participated in the last two monthsactives.
Now it is time to look at May’s activities, FloridaShrine Association at Palm Beach on the 4th throughthe 7th, Bingo on Tuesdays and Birthday Anniver-
sary Dinner Dance on 10th. I will be in Palm Beach tocompete with the Model Ts and hope to bring a trophyhome with us. After which I hope it’s time for a littleR & R for the rest of this month.
This month’s luncheon is on Friday, May 6, atwhich time Les Ruggiero will be the host and I hopeall Manatee Shrine Club members that are here willattend. Let’s have fun!

Well here we are in May and already getting ataste of summer and its glorious warmth. I
guess some call it scorching heat, but whicheveranalogy you prefer, it is nearly upon us in full force.Have you’re A/C units checked out soon.
As usual, the Motor Corps has been busy duringthe cooler months as I mentioned in the last article.One highlight of March was joining the Widow’s Sonson their annual ride to the St. Pete Masonic Retire-ment Home. This is always a rewarding and gratify-ing event with donations being made by many Masonicorganizations to the home. Of course, there was lotsof good food, music and vendors, along with a classiccar best of show competition. Weather was perfect, asI had ordered, so no one got wet on the ride…
The next morning we prepared and set in motionour annual Motor Corps Poker Run, which went well.
Unfortunately, we had a lot of competition in Tampaand Ft. Myers this year, so our attendance was a littleoff. The after-party, however, was very well attendedwith lots of fun, music, food, door prizes and raffleitems. If anyone reading this article was a donor ofany of these items, the Motor Corps would again liketo say thank you very much for your support of ourcharity efforts.
A group of Corps members gathered and went to StArmand’s Circle to solicit donations; the trip provedvery successful monetarily. I even heard the com-ment that, one did not even have to ask anyone for adonation, that when they recognized the fez, theymore than willing gave, usually with praising com-ments on the work of our hospitals… Thank you to thepublic for their donations and to the troops for their

The Sahib Banjo Band completed its 2011 programwith a performance at the Bay Indies Resort in
Venice on Wednesday, March 30. This season weplayed twelve shows in Bradenton, Arcadia, Sarasota,Venice and other local communities. Now that ourseason is completed, many of the band members willbe heading north to their summer homes.
This year Bill Pincumbe, who has been inductedinto the National Banjo Hall of Fame, was elected to theposition of Director Emeritus. Dr. Bob Werner hastaken over as music director and acted in that capacityfor this year’s program. The band members and wiveshad a final get-together at the home of BusinessManager Bill and Lady Bev Winslow on April 10.
The Clowns and Clown Dolls have a fun eventplaned for the May Birthday/Anniversary Dinner
Dance that you will not want to miss.The Dolls have made whimsical May pole table
decorations which will set the stage for our “Newly-wed & Not So Newlywed Game Show.” Couples will beselected from the audience to play in the game. Come

A small, but great group of colonels and theirladies met for dinner at the south Sarasota Red
Lobster in March. Following our customary toast, weenjoyed socializing during dinner.
May 24 we will meet at Papa Nick’s, 4940 FruitvilleRoad, about ½ mile west of I-75 on the north side of
the highway. We’ll be ordering off the menu, so justshow up. This is an open invitation to all, member ornot. Help us celebrate George Cancro’s birthday(May 7) and Paul & Rae Tobias’ 30th anniversary,(May 24)!
Greetings everyone, our March meeting was wellattended and President Hamilton moved things
right along as usual. Captain Mike Swatek tells methat the Arcadia Rodeo Celebration Parade was theusual fun experience. We had eight cars in it with nobreakdowns. Parade participants will sneak up be-hind you and discharge blank (hopefully) shotgunshells that make your ears ring for days. The folksover in Arcadia are always very friendly even to thepoint of walking up and telling you that they’re gladyou’re there.
The Anna Maria parade went just as smooth againwith eight cars and no breakdowns. Our new 2011Model T and Classic Car Membership Roster is nicein that it is an attractive little booklet and easy touse. I don’t know who is responsible for it, but willfind out and let you know next time.
Nobles of Fame, Distinction and Honor by NobleMichael A. Parker is a real winner. I wish there weresome way to have the general media pick it up. It
would definitely be a membership booster in thatJohn Q. Public would like to have something in com-mon with the famous people mentioned in each ar-ticle. It would make a nice TV promotion just as theShriners Hospitals for Children series on Fox Newschannel does.

Now that many of our northern friends have trav-elled great distances to get home for the sum-
mer, it’s time to reflect on a rapidly paced and exitingseason. The activities at Sahib Shrine have beenmind-boggling. There was something for everyone.these programs will slow down somewhat, but wemust continue to support the activities offered duringthe summer months, like Bingo, Birthday/Anniver-
sary dances and the Friday night dinners. Plus thereare several other special happenings going on. “Sup-port your Shrine,” is the key word.
The Oriental Band has been quite busy with pa-rades, the Sahib Spring Picnic and of course prepar-ing for the FSA/FSOB Convention in West PalmBeach. This month we have most of our bandsmentaking the trip across, and I am sure we will be

At our April Council meeting the units unani-mously voted to take over Sahib’s participation
at the Sarasota County Fair next year. PotentateTom Millaway made the offer at the April Unit HeadMeeting. As an incentive, the Unit Council will dis-tribute proceeds to units based on their participation.We realize that this is no simple task and that thesame problems and pitfalls will be encountered as inthe past. However, hopefully we can learn from thepast and overcome some of these obstacles. If so, itwill be worth the effort and units will realize somebenefits.
Thus far, this year’s council discussions have con-centrated mainly on moneymaking opportunities for
the units. Most of them have been nickel and dimeprojects, so to speak, compared to some projects in thepast. With the fair, units have the potential to realizea much bigger return for their efforts. Details on theadministration of this effort need to be worked out yetbut it is envisioned that more than just units will beinvolved.
The Unit Council has been concentrating onmoneymaking methods with the understanding thatunits with treasuries in good shape can better meettheir own needs, the needs of the temple and ourShriners Hospitals for Children. In that regard, sug-gestions on other ways to enhance the coffers of unitsare welcome.

As I wandered around the ballpark one day duringMarch, what caught my attention was the wonder-
ful PR work our Shriner volunteers were performing.At the various concession and beer stands, I ob-
served the way the Shriners and their ladies carriedout the assigned duties with dedication and exem-plary courtesies to the customers. Also, the manyvolunteers who worked the back rooms preparing thefood did so with enthusiasm.
These many volunteers from the Manatee andGulf Shrine Clubs were not only representing Shriners
in a good light, but were also raising funds for theirrespective clubs.
I understand from Jim Smith, President of theManatee Shrine Club, there were close to 1,000 man/woman hours by these volunteers for the 17 gamesduring March.
To all the men and women volunteers, congratula-tions to all of you for a job well done and for confirm-ing again to the public, “what great people areShriners!”

April has gone and apparently so has spring. The80’s that have been with us, made for a very warm
month and an extremely hot circus this year. Never theless, the crowd loved the shows. A great job was done bythe famous Sahib Clowns. This is a major fundraiser forSahib and we really need to back our chairman, KenShipley, and all his hard work. We need to try to attendthe circus ourselves. The Shriners are held in highesteem in this area and we need to keep showing peoplethat with these tough times we haven’t given up and arestill working hard to help the children. I’m hoping thatin the years to come, our Shriners at Sahib will makethe functions and fundraisers as fun experiences andnot as a bothersome laboring job. We joined the Shrine
to raise monies for our Shriners Hospitals for Childrenand have fun doing it.
Our calendars are full of things to do here at Sahib,something for most everyone. In the coming monthsthere will be some great changes to the temple. We havea new computer operated sign out front to post all theupcoming events to keep the public notified of events.There will be a major clean up and facelift to the frontof our building. And, on the inside there will be audioand visual equipment upgrades. Something that issurely needed to modernize so that programs can be puton with today’s technology. It’s great to be a Shriner andfeels wonderful to know that we can make a differ-ence in someone’s life. Keep up the good work!
Wow, summer is just around the corner and whathappened to spring?? The baseball season is
over for another year—spring training is history.Manatee and Gulf Shrine Clubs did great during thebusy working schedule. Shrine Circus went over welland lots of our kids got to see the Circus, thanks toSahib Circus Moms and Dads for all their help. Thespring picnic was a hugh success and the weather washot. Food was super! Thanks to the Hillbillies fordoing the cooking and serving. (Remember they serveall you can eat every Thursday night) All the unitsthat helped with everything THANKS, you all madeit possible. I’m sorry that I was unable to be at thefunctions this past month; I was at home minding mydoctor and staying off my foot after foot surgery. Yourvisits, cards, emails and calls were certainly appreci-ated. Thanks to everyone who filled in for me while
I’m recouping. I’ll be back strong and ready for theevents coming up. FSA convention in Palm BeachGardens May 4-7 will be where our units can show offtheir little cars and the clowns will be there to com-pete. Thanks units for showing the Florida ShrineAssociation what Sahib can do. Florida Grand Lodgewill be in Orlando May 29 - June 1.

March 13-16, my Lady Stacey Lee andI both attended classes taught by ShrinersImperial officers. The course was held atthe Marriott Hotel, Tampa Airport. Asusual, the studies were very intense andfocused on the ascension to Potentateand temple fundraising, Divan planning,protocol, speaking and media training,temple risk management and member-ship. Medical affairs, research and com-puter activities were reserved for thevery end.
As you can see, it was very intensetraining for a three-day course. I wasvery grateful we could attend and itbrought into focus the responsibilitiesattached to the Potentate’s position.
Well enough for now. May the Lordbless you and keep you safe in the palmof His hands.

We will alsovisit some of our brothers that have movedthere permanently, especially since theydon’t seem to want to come back to see usanymore. No names, but two in particu-lar can be identified by, ‘The Badge’ andDeeablo.” I guess they really like wherethey are now and what they are doing.
Can’t say as I blame them though… Itreally is a nice place.

Some of you may have noticed last month’s articlegaff- I talked about the Ceremony of Remem-
brance in the past tense only to find my copy of theReporter in my mailbox before the actual event hadtaken place! Oh well, so much for trying to staycurrent. It was still a huge success even if I was alittle premature with my writings. We had over fiftyguests attend and the catered dinner seemed to be abig hit. Our guest speaker Ill. Richard S. Agster, 33°did a wonderful talk on key Masons throughout history,and the degree team did their absolute finest work.
We don’t have a meeting in May as that would bean odd numbered month, but we will be exemplifyingthe 6th Degree in June—the even numbered month.The Sixth Degree is part of the Lodge of Perfection(4°-14°). In this degree, one should expand theirknowledge of duty, charity and toleration. We areinstructed to reshape ourselves and our thinking into
charity, self-control and success, i.e. to be a peace-maker.
We will however still be having our regular lun-cheon at the Sahib Shrine in May on the secondFriday, which is the 13th. All you history buffs outthere know the significance of ‘Friday the Thirteenth’,so why not show up at our luncheon and share yourwealth of knowledge to those brothers who may not.It would certainly be a fitting topic of discussion,that’s for sure. We’ll start gathering in the SaharaRoom at around 11:30 a.m. Come as you are, from thework place or the job site it’s all very casual.

General Douglas MacArthur, a Freemason, posedthe question thus: “Is America life in the future
to be characterized by freedom or by servitude,strength or weakness?” The answer must be clear andunequivocal if we are to avoid the pitfalls towardwhich we are headed. In many respects, it is not to befound in any doctrine of political philosophy, but inthose immutable precepts which underlie the TenCommandments.
If one lives, walks and acts according to our teach-ings and truths, then his neighbor sees a true imageof Freemasonry in him. If, on the other hand, one iscallous, indifferent and disloyal to the privilege andcharge given to him, Masonry suffers.
Too long has Masonry “hidden its light under abushel.” It is vital that we, as Masons, exemplify inour own lives “the Vision of Masonry,” but we must doeven more than that—we must actively and sincerelypass on to others our interest, our love, our faith, ourloyalty in our fraternity. There are many active anddevoted Masons who have sons, brothers, businessassociates and close friends who have never appliedfor admission. The members of one’s family and friendsshould not only see exemplified in our lives “theVision of Masonry,” but they should hear from us thephilosophy, ideals, teachings and objectives of Free-masonry insofar as we are permitted to tell them.
Being informed, they will know that in order toparticipate in this heritage and join in our ranks,they must seek admission on their own initiative,thus complying with the Biblical instruction “Askand it shall be given you, seek and ye shall find, knockand it shall be opened to you.”
The sincere and truly dedicated Mason believes inthe Supreme Being as the giver of life and the Lord ofImmortality. He is dedicated to the principles offreedom and fulfills his duties individually—and as acitizen of our nation—in the preservation of all thatis good and true in the American way of life. Andfinally, the Mason should exemplify in his life, inso-far as he can, the teachings and truths of mortality asset forth in the Holy Bible and exemplified in theceremonies of the lodge. Not only must we have thisrededication and reawakening to the truths and teach-ings of our fraternity, but also we must do so withenthusiasm and determination.
In the words of Edward Everett Hale: “I am onlyone, but I am one, I cannot do everything, but I can dosomething and what I can do I am going to do.”

In the 26th Degree, you were given a fish and it wasexplained to you that on its side were the letters
IXOYE, the Greek word for fish, which in English ispronounced ICK-TUSS. These five letters are also theinitials of five Greek words which translated to En-glish read “Jesus Christ the Son of God the Savior.”
Have you ever thought about how and why thissign was used? The outline of the fish became theoriginal sign of a Christian, those who traveled andspoke of Christ and his teachings. Many times thesefollowers were in danger of being identified and im-prisoned. To protect themselves they came up withthe sign of the fish. When a Christian met a stranger,he would draw half a fish in the sand. If the strangerwas a Christian, he would complete the fish and theywere safe to communicate with each other.
This symbol is found on many tombs and buildingsin the Christian areas and was even worn as anornament. Clement of Alexandria, in writing aboutthe ornaments a Christian may wear, mentions the
fish as an appropriate device to remind one of hisspiritual life - the fish reminding us of the waters ofbaptism.
Some of our early Grand Masters wore a silver fishon their persons, but like the Church of Rome, dis-carded the sign.
The Church of Rome switched to using the cross asa symbol of Christianity. Martin Luther, the Germantheologian, tried to reinstitute the use of the fish, butwas unsuccessful. Luther’s rationale was that thefish was a symbol of quiet and peacefulness, while thecross was a symbol of violence and death. The Chris-tian knights would not accept this logic and contin-ued to display the cross on their banners.
Today we see the fish image displayed in manyplaces and it is often used on seals, clerical jewelryand vestments.
When you observe the fish image think not only ofthe 26th Degree, but also of the spiritual life itrepresents.

As I write this, the Sarasota County Fair is ancienthistory (March 18-27.) It was a tough fight filling
many spots because of the competition with the springtraining baseball games, the LOS installation, theKing Pin Picnic and just too many other shindigsgoing on. Without the dogged help of Cliff Blood-sworth and Bill Batten, it would have never hap-pened. Then there was the dedicated help of Fred andMarylou Ellis, Dave and Mickie Joly, John and MarilynYoder and Rosetta Johnston who like Cliff and Billwere at their stations everyday! Of course, it didn’tmatter if you gave one work shift or several; I thank
each of you for your help in providing the extraincome for the Shrine.
Another special thanks go to Bill Batten andCliff Bloodsworth for obtaining the materials andsetting up the Sahib Shrine booth; it was attrac-tively done and evoked much interest and manyinquiries. Much information was taken by the fairattendees that may prove helpful in getting moreBlue Lodge applicants.

A time capsule dating from the 1930s was un-earthed and opened as part of the dedication
ceremonies for the newly rebuilt Shriners Hospitalsfor Children — Honolulu.
Members of the Joint Boards and invited guestswere on-hand to see what treasures from the pastwould be found inside the time capsule. Photos, coins,and newspapers were among the historic items found.

Time Capsule reveals memories of the 1930s

Almost three years ago, Garrett Sutherland and his father were injured in a house fire in Hixson, TN. With life-threatening injuries, Garrett was immediately transferred to Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Cincinnati for expert pediatric burn treatment. “Garrett was a very sick little boy,” said his father, Matthew.
But with any serious burn injury there are scars. Some you can hide under clothes and others you can not. This was the case for Garrett, now 8 years old.
Because of burns to his scalp, Garrett’s head was partially bald. “A child’s self-esteem and body image has a lot to do with how others see you,” said Mary Beth Daugherty, director of rehabilitation services at the Cincinnati hospital.
“Having a full head of hair normalizes a child’s appearance, so people don’t focus so much on the baldness or even the scars.” For many years, the Cincinnati hospital has helped children, like Garrett, get hairpieces or human hair replacements to fill-in where they might have hair loss due to their injury.
A chance meeting between two Shriners at a recent Cincinnati hospital board meeting proved to be just the catalyst for Garrett and his request to have a full head of hair that he could
“spike” on his own.
Alhambra Shriners Joe Gebis and Barry Walker, who have known Garrett for years, mentioned his interest in getting a hair replacement piece to Wayne Lamb, associate board member for the Cincinnati hospital and past potentate at Alhambra Shriners. Wayne made
plans to talk with the staff in Cincinnati during the January board meeting about Garrett’s wishes.
At the same board meeting, Wayne sat next to Jim Aiken, child care driver for Moslem Shriners in Detroit.
Jim and the staff at Moslem have been supporters of Children with Hairloss (CWHL) for some time. Regina Villemure, Founder and CEO of CWHL has a granddaughter, Elina, who is a patient at the Erie hospital. Because of what Shriners Hospitals for Children® hasbeen able to do for her granddaughter, Regina has always wanted to help the hospitals and other patients.
When Jim heard of Garrett’s wishes, the plans fell in place and arrangements were made for Garrett to meet with Regina during his next visit to Cincinnati.
“I told Wayne, you sat next to the right person,” said Jim. “Regina’s organization is a wonderful resource for children and we were thrilled to know she could help a Shriners Hospitals for Children®
patient, like Garrett.”
Jim brought Regina to meet Garrett late February and Regina worked her magic. She fitted Garrett for his own hair replacement piece and gave Garrett a temporary one to go home with. “It takes a lot to get used to a new look for a young person,” said Regina. “At first Garrett wasn’t quite comfortable with the hair replacement piece, but after I trimmed it, gave it a bit more life, he was pretty comfortable with it and ended up wearing it down to the playroom that afternoon.”

We at Nyla Temple are ready to welcome all thosewho read this newsletter. We are Daughters of
the Nile. A daughter is a female or one closely con-nected to a certain environment. The Nile is thelongest river in the world flowing north to the Medi-terranean. The headwaters are the Kagera River.The definition is dark or lue and referred to in the OldTestament.
The people of ancient Egypt valued family life.They treasured children and regarded them as agreat blessing. Ancient Egyptians wore clothes madeof linen. This is made from plant fibers which comefrom flax plants that grow abundantly along thebanks of the Nile River.
We as Daughters of the Nile are closely related tothis environment that valued and treasured children.This year the theme of Daughters is “Working for theChildren; the Heart of the Daughters of the Nile.”
It is my hope that during this year as queen we willwork tirelessly for these children and try to keepthem safe and comfortable.
In our own temple, we have several ways to workin this direction. We have “Kits for Kids” and otherladies make squares that become afghans. We alsomake socks for prostheses and booties to keepchildren’s feet warm after surgery.
Please, if you would like to join us in any of theseefforts, speak to one of us, join us and feel the lovethat we have for you and eventually for the children.
We will be having a luncheon in August to which anyof you would be welcome. Please let us know you wouldlike to be included. We will let you know the date, timeand place. We would like to socialize and get to knowyou better. It will be in the Venice area to reach thosewho are unable to travel to Bradenton. We have loveto give to you, since Nyla has given it to us.

Walter Breuning, the world’s oldest man, retiredrailroad clerk, Mason and Shriner, passed away
at the age of 114 in Great Falls, Montana, on April 14.When asked about his secret to longevity, he of-
fered this advice to reporters and visitors alike, “Ifyou keep your mindbusy and keep yourbody busy, you're go-ing to be around along time.”
He lived what hepreached and keptbusy in a railroadcareer that spanned50 years. In 1963 heretired at the age of67, but did not re-main retired long.He returned to workas a manager andsecretary for GreatFalls Shrine Clubuntil the age of 99.

The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donatingaluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As ofNovember 30, 2010, they have collected 70, 508 lbs., for a total of$33,776.93 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa.

are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahibclub/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center.The money netted from recycling goes directly into the“Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospi-tal for Children.
