Volume 31, Issue 3, October 2017 Dear Colleagues: What a difference a year makes! Last October we stood in solidarity to demand a fair contract that was long overdue—one year later we are preparing to take a ratifi- cation vote on a one-year extension to our contract that expires on June 30 th . A one -year extension that we did not have to fight forin fact, APSCUF was approached by the State System with the initial offer. It was because of each of you who stood on the picket line for three days that we are where we are today. The ratification vote for the tentative agreement will take place November 13-15. This is a members-only vote. The details of the tentative agreement can be found on the membersonly-website (www.apscuf.org). If you do not already have an account, you will need to sign up for one, and after your membership has been veri- fied, you will receive log-in information. The nominations and elections committee has sent emails out with polling locations as well as a Doodle poll for those who are able/willing to volunteer to staff the polls throughout the voting process. Thank you to those who have already stepped up to volunteer your time!

November also marks the kick off of our PowerPack donation drive. Last year, combining our efforts with AP-SCURF, we were able to donate almost $5000 to support ICAAP in making sure that children in all of our local school districts have food. The need for this program is growing, and we have an opportunity to make a difference in our community. Please join me in giving generously for this program! We will be accepting cash donations through the end of the semester. If writing a check, please make it out to ICAAP, and we will make sure it is in-cluded with the final donation.

We face many challenges ahead as a union, state-wide as well as locally. We are stronger together, and our solidar-ity matters!

In Solidarity!

Dear Colleagues: This fall marks the seventh year that members of IUP-APSCUF and IUP-APSCURF have donated money to the Indiana County Community Action Program, the community’s largest food bank. ICCAP, now in its second half-century year, serves a special constituency of ours. The money we raise is donated to ICCAP’s Power Pack Program, which benefits young school children countywide who have been identified by school nurses as needy and hungry. These children may be our future students. ICCAP representatives report that the Power Pack Program is serving every elementary school in Indiana County twice a month. During the 2015-2016 school year, the agency distributed more than 29,000 pounds of food for 600 or so Power Pack Program students. ICCAP officials say they hope to increase that amount to meet growing demand. IUP-APSCUF asks once again that you please consider contributing before or during the final Representa-tive Council meeting of the semester on Thursday, December 14th. Personal checks should be made out to “ICCAP” with “Power Pack Program” noted in the memo section of the check and given to departmental Rep. Council members for delivery at the November meeting. Checks can also be snail-mailed directly to IUP-APSCUF Office Manager Bonnie Jo Young at the APSCUF Office in 311 Pratt Hall. Donations will be bundled and delivered to ICCAP before the holidays, and a news release and photo will be sent to re-gional news media. A year ago, our members and retirees donated $4,826, a 75 percent increase over our fall 2015 donations. Since 2011, we have given more than $16,300 to the ICCAP effort.

From a public relations perspective, such generosity generates a lot of goodwill here and beyond. For ex-ample, The Indiana Gazette, the Blairsville Dispatch, The Penn and other regional media have published our news releases about and photos of our ICCAP donations. That’s a lot of community goodwill, and the price is right, too. Please consider donating again for this most recent drive. And, thanks again. In solidarity,

Nadene

Are You a Full Union Member?

APSCUF full members pay union dues equal to 1.15% of their salary. Fair share contribu-tors are required to pay 89% of this 1.15%. However, on paycheck stubs, the fee is simply listed as “APSCUF DUE” for APSCUF and fair share contributors alike. The bottom line: just because it says “APSCUF DUE” on your paycheck, it does not mean that you are a union member. Contact Bonnie Jo Young at ext. 7-3021 or via email at [email protected] to ensure that you are a union member.

Preparing to apply for promotion can be an anxiety-provoking experience, but having the support of others who are also working on that big project, along with dedicated time and some tips on how to be successful in the process, can be a tremendous help. That support was provided by the APSCUF Newer Faculty Commit-tee in the form of a day-long Promotion Prep Retreat, held on Friday, September 29, 2017. Fourteen tenure-track faculty in all stages of their careers came together in the HUB to work on their promotion materials and hear from colleagues who were successful in the promotion process last year. Dr. Jon Cooper (Criminology), Dr. Riah Hoffman (Nursing/Allied Health) and Dr. Tim Runge (Educational and School Psy-chology) all visited the retreat and provided suggestions and tips for the application process based on their experiences last year. UWPC Chair Dr. Justin Fair (Chemistry) also visited with attendees, offering infor-mation and answering questions. APSCUF provided refreshments and lunch, and Kaity Martin, Student Af-fairs in Higher Education master’s student, assisted with the retreat planning and execution. Participants in-dicated that the retreat was helpful, and the committee hopes to host this event again in the future.

Dr. Justin Fair, UWPC Chair, answered questions from retreat attendees.

Greetings. I hope your semester is getting back to somewhat normal. Got a minute? IUP-APSCUF is continuing to do a series of goodwill adver-tisements in The Indiana Gazette (and elsewhere) that high-lights the public-service work of union members. The ads focus on faculty members and coaches with expertise in their fields, such as back-to-school tips for parents, teaching chil-dren to read, dealing with depression, etc. The idea is to gather APSCUF members' brief descriptions (a paragraph) of their engagements with -- or outreach to -- the community. We will expand on those paragraphs as the academic year proceeds and the ad series starts publication. Got a nominee? Please email a brief blurb to IUP-APSCUF P.R. Committee chair Dave Loomis at [email protected]. Thank you, in advance, for your participation with this pro-ject.
