VOLUME 31, NUMBER 1

Message from the President: Lynn McCleary

Summer 2014

In this newsletter, I’d like to encourage CGNA members to take advantage of

opportunities to share their expertise and make a difference in older adults’ health.

My thoughts are influenced by two events in my life, the first being my involvement in revising the CGNA bylaws over the past year and the second being my learning to edit Wikipedia, so that I can teach my students to become Wikipedia editors.

Having been closely involved in the process of revising our bylaws over the past year, I feel like our vision, mission, and the list of purposes we reaffirmed in our submission of the new bylaws to Industry Canada are becoming ingrained in our mind. Our vision is to promote excellence in gerontological nursing through leadership, knowledge, and scholarship. One of the objectives that we have for achieve this is to participate in activities that promote the health of older adults. We also promote the dissemination of gerontological nursing research. We can achieve these objective collectively as an organization and through the efforts of individual members.

Editing Wikipedia is potentially to be a great way to disseminate research and knowledge about gerontological nursing to the public. It’s a way to promote health of older adults, through accurate

information. Wikipedia is one of the largest reference websites, with over 4 million English language articles (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:About). The quality of information on Wikipedia depends on editors, the volunteers who update existing content and add new content. Editors are people like you and me. Anyone can edit Wikipedia, on their own or with support of a group. For example, in 2012, the European Delirium Association and the American Delirium Society updated the Wikipedia delirium page, adding content that would be helpful to the general public. As part of my learning how to edit Wikipedia, I added a small contribution to the delirium page. It was only a little bit scary.

In September, I will teach my first year nursing students how to write and edit Wikipedia articles. I thought I’d better be sure that I knew how to do this myself, so I found an article that was rated as low quality and revised it. The article was the Wikipedia entry on Geriatric nursing. I suggested a name change to Gerontological nursing and revised the content. This article might be a good place for beginner editors among the CGNA membership to begin editing. You could add information to create a full description of what gerontological nursing is.

If there’s interest, we can have a webinar about how to edit Wikipedia. Some of you must already have

experience as Wikipedia editors. If you’d like to have a tutorial or you’re willing to support other CGNA

members to learn Wikipedia, please contact me ([email protected]). You don’t have to wait for a

tutorial, there are great tutorials and introductions to editing on the Wikipedia website. As they say on Wikipedia, be bold, share your knowledge now, start editing.

Meet your Members

This issues ‘Meet your Members’ comes as a reprint courtesy of the Gerontological Nurses

Association of Ontario and their Spring/Summer Newsletter. With permission of the North Bay Regional Health Centre and the members of the GNAO North Bay Chapter, you are encouraged to take a look at the photoVoice youtube video. This is an excellent way to engage family, staff, students!

PhotoVOICE Helps Reduce Stigma Associated with Mental Illness Experienced

by Older Persons

PhotoVOICE is an initiative by the North Bay Regional Health Centre that allows clients with mental illness to express themselves through photography and video. The latest photoVOICE project focused on 5 individuals from inpatient seniors' mental health units (tertiary care). The theme of this project was the recovery pillar of "non-linear." Non-linear refers to the process of recovery as not one that is step-by-step, but one based on continual growth, occasional setbacks and learning from experience. One of the goals of photoVOICE is to provide public awareness of mental illness and reduce stigma. This photoVOICE project had a public exhibition at the Kennedy Art Gallery in North Bay in April and was presented at the GNAO North East Chapter Nursing Week breakfast in May. The link below will provide further information on photoVOICE from Arts Health Network Canada http://artshealthnetwork.ca/initiatives/photovoice-north-bay-regional-health-centre

photoVOICE - The Journey The North East Chapter of GNAO showed this photoVOICE video at their Nursing Week Breakfast and Kathy King, North East Chapter President, indicated, “there were a lot of tears. Debbie Hewitt Colborne - Membership Co-Chair, facilitated the discussion and captured the important role that gerontological nurses play in the health of older adults.” To view the photoVOICE video click the youtube link below http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Trtf6FlL7U8&list=PLEfOY_3qmzEdaEGgas5etDMEuswuAQJwD&index=14

An additional clip brings a more intimate picture of one of the people in The Journey that is, who Andy is, through pictures and voice of one of his daughters.

The North Bay Regional Health Centre team encourages sharing of these videos and their message. I would like to thank the following for making it possible to share this with our CGNA members and their colleagues:

Lori Shindel-Martin, Darlene Legree and Debbie Hewitt Colborne who suggested this, Lauree Pizzale & Sanday Sikora who were the in charge of this particular photoVOICE project and Tamara Dube-Clarke,Patient and Family Partnered Care Coordinator, Quality and Performance Excellence Department, North Bay Regional Health Centre.

CGNA Standards The CGNA Gerontological Nursing Competencies and Standards of Practice were last revised and published in 2010. As an organization for which nurses can write the Canadian Gerontological Nursing Certification exam, we review and update the standards every 5 years. This allows us to respond to evolving change as a partner in the health care system. This process calls for a working group with representation from across Canada to review and update the standards and is followed by an external review prior to publishing them in 2015. If you may be interested in being involved in the process please contact Diane Buchanan at: [email protected].

Nominations This is the first announcement of the call for nominations for CGNA executive members whose terms will end at the next 2015 Annual General Meeting. The process will be included in the Fall Issue of the CGNA Newsletter and posted on the Website. The positions to be filled include: President-Elect and Secretary.

Summer 2014

Using web based technology a pilot project was launched to support AGNA members across the province in preparing for the 2014 C.N.A. certification examination. With the gracious support from our Calgary Chapter Study Group coordinators, along with some really interesting technical challenges and several ‘ought oh’ moments, we are moving forward with expanding the project for the

upcoming year. AGNA held a very successful (sold out!) annual general meeting and conference ‘Conversations from Practice‘ on 25 April 2014. Our Red Deer chapter for a second year facilitated a ‘Taste of Central

Alberta’ gift basket in support of this annual event. As always we are very appreciative of our sponsor’s

ongoing support. Please visit our website www.agna.ca for information and details from this year’s event. Our challenge for the upcoming membership year is exploring and creatively trying new ways of connecting our smaller in number member groups with larger communities of practice. In part we are employing ‘outside the box’ ideas for chapter linkages or even structures. Respectfully submitted by Lynne Moulton, [email protected]
