“Man plans and God laughs” goes the old Yiddishism, a response to the ironies
and tragedies of Jewish life and history. But is it true? A verse in the book of
Psalms declares
יושב בשמים ישחק
God, as it were, sits upon His throne and laughs. R. Yitzchak (Avoda Zara 3b)
insists that this moment of laughter will occur only once in history. On “that
day”, meaning the day of revelation and redemption, God will laugh at those
who failed to recognize His existence and serve Him before that day. Otherwise,
the Lord despite His unfathomable knowledge does not laugh.
Interestingly, the Talmud refuses to accept R. Yitzchak’s statement at face val-
ue. It quotes Midrashic lore that speaks of God celebrating for a third of each
day. Is the Holy One not laughing? R. Nachman answers that
עם בריותיו משחק ועל בריותיו אינו משחק אלא אותו יום בלבד.
God laughs with His creations each day, but he laughs at His creations only at
the end of days. The Talmud continues, noting that even God’s celebration with
His people is tempered in the wake of the destruction of the Temple.
The colloquialism “Man plans and God laughs” reflects two aspects of the hu-
man experience. The first is man’s impotence, his inability to control the multi-
tude of forces. The created human being is ultimately subject to the winds of
fate which are far more powerful than he. Second, the Yiddish ditty imagines a
powerful being, playing games with the lives of the weak. The first of these as-
sumptions is true. Daily, in our prayers, we express our frustrations with our
own human limitations, especially when compared with the unbridled power of
God.
The second assumption, however, is a fallacy. God, our tradition insists, cares
deeply for His creations. To live as a human being means to confront our own
limitations, but we should not feel as if God plays willy-nilly with our lives. It’s
true, we cannot comprehend God’s plan, but we should not view our suffering
as an object for God’s amusement. For all its philosophical challenge, we be-
lieve that God joins us in our challenges; He is there, with us in our pain. So,
perhaps it might be more correctly stated that “Man plans and God feels.”

Dear Members.
Shavuot is a time for new beginnings. When Bnei Yisrael stood at Har Sinai to receive the Torah, it marked the start of our collective exist-
ence as the Jewish people. In our own community this is an important time for renewal as well. Just like at Har Sinai we need to recognize the
debt we owe to those who brought us to the base of the mountain as well as recognize those who will help us to continue in our climb.
Shavuot marks the start of a new year for the leadership of our shul, and I want to take this moment to recognize and thank all of those who
have helped to make the past year in our shul another wonderful
year. We have so many dedicated volunteers who help to keep our
shul running every day and make the special events and programs
that make YIP so special. The shul ran 248 events, shiurim, pro-
grams and meetings over the past year (I know it sounds crazy, but I
counted).
Thank you to the members of this past year’s board and welcome to
our new board members:
While some of our board members will be stepping down, they all
remain incredibly active and important volunteers in our communi-
ty. This type of transition and volunteerism is the backbone of our
community, and I can’t possibly express enough appreciation to all
those who have helped and will continue to help our shul.
A special thank you to our long time financial Secretary Larry Pol-
lack who has done his job incredibly well for many years. He is
continually respectful and discreet, and we are grateful for his con-
tribution to our shul; we are also grateful to Shani Kaufman who
will be taking on this important job this year.
Also a special Thank you to Rabbi Weissman and Yoetzet Weiss-
man for another year of leadership in our community. We rely on
you in good times and bad and can’t thank you enough for every-
thing you do (even the things we don’t know about).
An immense thank you to Daniel and Jessica Sultan. You’ve totally
spoiled us! Thank you so much for your ongoing creativity and ded-
ication to our kids. You have made it exciting to be in our Youth
Department, and we tremendously appreciate your years as our
Youth Directors. We are so happy you will be staying in Plainview.
Welcome to our new Youth Directors Eitan and Jessica Bedziner.
We look forward to a spectacular year ahead for our YIP Youth.
The year has flown by and we have accomplished a lot. I want to
specifically thank our new Office Manager, Stacy Grady, for helping to keep things running throughout the year.
My key goal for this year was to try to make our shul operate more resiliently.
Some of our accomplishments:
1) Hired, on-boarded, and trained our new Office Manager Stacy Grady
2) Transitioned treasurer responsibilities to Jason Goldberg (great job Ken and Jason)
3) Implemented online portal for all members to see their shul obligations and transactions, www.yiplainview.com/member
4) Secured $150,000 federal homeland security grant
5) Implemented updated safety policies and procedures
6) Increased collaboration with community organizations, OU, UJA, JCC, PJC, MJC
7) Processed TOB license of public assembly permit renewal
8) Execute the process for renewal of our Rabbi’s contract
9) Execute the process to hire a new Youth Director
We still have much to do for some of these goals, and I hope to continue to work with everyone in the coming year to keep on improving. I
look forward to seeing everyone at our first Membership meeting of the year on June 30 at 9PM.

The Sisterhood has finished out the year with some fun and exciting programs! First we’d like to thank Jennifer Sneag and Chana
Penini for the awesome Game Show Night, which provided a ton of laughs and great videos. As always, the Pesach Wine Sale, orga-
nized by Atara Marzouk, was a successful event that raised funds for Sisterhood, while providing the community with a diverse selec-
tion of kosher wines. We also cannot forget the beautiful Mishloach Manot this Purim. Thank you to Ahuva Sclair and Suri Gotowner
for all your hard work and to the entire community and for being so helpful at picking up all bags before everyone left Shul! What an
amazing community we are all a part of. Recently, in our Yoetzet Halacha Initiative Program we have screened the documentary 93QUEEN with much success! Those who
attended enjoyed watching the movie about the creation of an all women's EMS group in Brooklyn. The movie sparked many heated
conversations amongst the viewers. Additionally, shortly before Pesach we hosted for a second year in a row the Annual Yesh Tikvah
Infertility Awareness Shabbat. This year former Rabbinic Intern couple Rabbi Willie and Estee Balk shared with us their emotional jour-
ney through infertility. They engaged the audience of about seventy, and bravely answered any questions that were posed to them. All in
attendance were greatly moved by their presentation. In addition, Avital gives a weekly shiur on Sefer Bereishit on Wednesday nights.
We look forward to many more interesting and meaningful programs from our Yoetzet Halacha. (For topic suggestions or ideas, please
email Avital at [email protected]).
As with each Shavuot, the Sisterhood elects a new board as well. We want to thank Michelle Meir for her service as Sisterhood Presi-
dent these last three years. Thank you to the board members who are stepping down for their contribution to the Sisterhood. Perri Wal-
lowitz and Wendy Ofer are very excited to take on positions as Co-Presidents. We are looking forward to working with the new board
this year! Thank you to our Nominating Committee Michelle Meir, Maryann Mori, Wendy Ofer, and Perri Wallowitz for presenting our
slate. On Sunday, May 5th, we held a General Sisterhood Membership meeting, in which we voted to accept the slate proposed by the
Nominating Committee. Congratulations to our new and returning officers! The new Board will begin its year on Shavuot. We would
like to say Mazal Tov to David Gross and the incoming Shul board, and we are very excited to work with David and the Shul board this
upcoming year.
Please mark your calendars for some exciting events coming up. On June 13th we will be painting wood pallets at Make it Too in
Bethpage, and coming this summer we will resume our book club!
Thank you,
Perri Wallowitz & Wendy Ofer
