Burton C. Agata. Burton C. Agata is currently a Professorat Hofstra University's School of Law, where he also serves asDirector of the Advanced Practice Institute. He is a member ofthe American Law Institute, and is of counsel to the law firm ofReisch, Klar & Lane. Before coming to Hofstra, Professor Agatataught at several other law schools, and served two years assenior counsel for the National Commission on Reform ofFederal Criminal Laws where he was involved in the drafting ofa new federal criminal code. Professor Agata's broad experienceincludes service as Chairman of the Committee on Research ofthe American Bar Association Section on Criminal Law;chairman of the Criminal Law Section of the Association ofAmerican Law Schools; director of the A.B.A.'s comparativestudy of Criminal Justice Standards for New York; director andconsultant for the Federal Judicial Center study on Admissionsand Discipline of Attorneys in Federal Courts; consultant on theimplementation of criminal justice standards to the Institute ofJudicial Administration; and consultant to the United StatesState Department, the Department of Health, Education andWelfare, and the White House Special Action Office on DrugAbuse Prevention. He received an LL.M. from New York Uni-versity in 1951 after receiving a B.A. in 1947 and a J.D. (withdistinction) in 1950 from the University of Michigan.

Samuel J. M. Donnelly. Samuel J. M. Donnelly received his A.B.degree from Fordham University, his LL.B. from Harvard, andhis LL.M. from New York University. After serving as LawSecretary to the Honorable Nathan L. Jacobs, Associate Justiceof the New Jersey Supreme Court, he was appointed as a Teach-ing Fellow at Harvard. Mr. Donnelly is a Professor of Law atYork University, and his J.D. degree from N.Y.U. Law School.

Robert J. Egan. Robert J. Egan received his B.S. degree from George-town University, and his M.A. and LL.B. degrees from Yale Uni-versity. He was appointed to the first advisory committee toNew York City's Department of Consumer Affairs in 1969, andhas served as Deputy Commissioner for Legal Affairs of thatdepartment since 1974. From 1965 to 1968, while in privatepractice in New York City, he was a consultant to the federalOffice of Economic Opportunity, and from 1968 to 1974, wasgeneral counsel to the New York Urban Coalition. Mr. Egan isa member of the Board of Directors of Manhattan Legal ServicesCorp.

David J. Ellis. David J. Ellis is currently the executive director ofthe fund for Modern Courts, Inc. He received his B.A. in 1964from Cornell University, a C.E.P. from the University of Paris in1965, and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969.Upon graduation, he became associated with the New York Cityfirm of Shearman and Sterling, where he practiced until Sep-tember, 1973. Mr. Ellis is a former adjunct instructor of busi-ness law at Fordham University, and has done volunteer workwith community law offices in Harlem.

S. William Green. S. William Green received his B.A. degree fromHarvard University in 1950 and his LL.B. degree from HarvardLaw School in 1953. After serving as law secretary to the lateJudge George T. Washington of the Court of Appeals for theDistrict of Columbia, he entered private practice as an attorneyin New York City. He served as Chief Counsel for New York'sJoint Legislative Committee on Housing and Urban Develop-ment from 1961 to 1964, and was elected to the New YorkState Assembly for three terms from 1964 to 1970. As a memberof the Assembly, he was the Vice-Chairman of the Joint Legis-lative Committee on Housing and Urban Development, andserved on the City of New York, Health, and Housing Committeesas well. Presently Administrator of the New York RegionalOffice of the Department of Housing and Urban Development,a position he has held since 1970, he is also Chairman of theFederal Regional Council, Region 11, and is an ex officio Com-missioner of the Tri-State Regional Planning Commission.

James D. Hopkins. James D. Hopkins received his A.B. from ColumbiaCollege and his LL.B. from Columbia Law School. After prac-ticing law, he was elected County Executive of New York's West-chester County. Thereafter, he was elected County Judge ofWestchester, and then, Justice of the Supreme Court. He hasserved by designation of the Governor as an Associate Justice ofthe Appellate Division, Second Department since 1962. JusticeHopkins was elected Chairman of the Judicial Section of theNew York Bar Association in 1969, and is Chairman-Elect of theExecutive Committee of the Appellate Judges Conference ofthe American Bar Association. He is also director of the NationalCollege of the State Judiciary, and is Chairman of the AdvisoryCommittee on Appellate Administration of the American BarFoundation Project.

Dennis A. Kendig. Dennis A. Kendig received his J.D. from Yale LawSchool in 1973, and his B.A. from De Pauw University in 1969.After two years with the New York firm of Kaye, Scholer, Fier-man, Hays, & Handler, he is now associated with the Los Angelesfirm of Agnew, Miller and Carlson.

Josephine Y. King. Josephine Y. King is a professor of law at HofstraUniversity. She received a B.A. degree from the University ofPennsylvania, an M.A. and Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College, anda J.D. (cum laude) from the State University of New York atBuffalo School of Law, where she was the first woman to serveas editor-in-chief of the Buffalo Law Review. Dr. King is theauthor of numerous law review articles in the fields of civil pro-cedure, judicial administration, medical malpractice, no-faultaccident reparations, torts and conflict of laws. She has servedas consultant to the state legislature in drafting the No-FaultAutomobile Compensation Law and has completed a study, undercommission of the Judicial Conference of the State of New York,on accelerating personal injury litigation. Professor King is amember of the American Law Institute and Director of the pro-gram in Judicial Administration at Hofstra.

Jacob Mishler. Jacob Mishler received his B.S. degree from NewYork University, and his J.D. degree from N.Y.U. Law School.After practicing law for twenty-five years, he was elevated to thebench as a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. Ap-pointed as a United States District Judge in the Eastern Districtof New York in 1960, he has been the Chief Judge of that Dis-trict for the last five years.

Eleanor Holmes Norton. Eleanor Holmes Norton graduated fromAntioch College in 1960, received her M.A. in American Studiesfrom Yale University in 1963, and her LL.B. from Yale Law Schoolin 1964. After serving as law clerk to Judge Leon Higgenbothamof the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, she was a constitutionallawyer in practice on the staff of the American Civil LibertiesUnion. Currently Chairperson of the New York City Commis-sion on Human Rights, she was originally appointed by MayorJohn Lindsay in 1970, and was reappointed by Mayor AbrahamBeame in 1974.

Alice L. O'Donnell. Alice L. O'Donnell attended the University ofSouthern California and the University of Washington beforereceiving her LL.B. degree from George Washington University.She served on the staff of the Attorney General of the UnitedStates and on the staff of Mr. Justice Tom C. Clark. Ms.O'Donnell is a Division Delegate to the A.B.A.'s House of Dele-gates, and was formerly a Chairperson of the American BarAssociation's Division of Judicial Administration. She is presentlyDirector of the Federal Judicial Center's Division of Inter-JudicialAffairs.

Inez Smith Reid. Inez Smith Reid is an associate professor of politicalscience at Barnard College. She received her B.A. from TuftsUniversity in 1959, an LL.B. from Yale Law School in 1962, anM.A. in Political Science from U.C.L.A. in 1963, and a Ph.D. fromColumbia University in 1968 in the area of Public Law and Gov-ernment. Professor Reid has previously taught at Brooklyn andHunter Colleges of the City University of New York, the StateUniversity of New York at New Paltz, and the Ecole Nationalede Droit et d'Administration, Congo-Kinshasa (now Zaire). Sheserves as chairperson of the Executive Committee of the AntiochCollege Board of Trustees, as a trustee for the Citizens ResearchFoundation, and has completed four years as Executive Directorof the Black Women's Community Development Foundation.Ms. Reid has authored numerous works, including TogetherBlack Women, and serves on the editorial boards of Civil Liber-ties Review and Synthesis.

Eric J. Schmertz. Eric J. Schmertz is a Professor of law at HofstraUniversity. He received his A.B. in 1948 from Union Collegebefore receiving a J.D. from New York University in 1954. Pro-fessor Schmertz is a public member of the New York City Officeof Collective Bargaining, and serves as impartial chairman undercollective bargaining agreements between the City of New Yorkand the Uniformed Firefighters and Fire Officer Associations. Heis a professional arbitrator with several industries and among hismany affiliations is membership in the National Academy ofArbitrators and the American Arbitration Association NationalArbitration Panel.

Neil T. Shayne. Neil T. Shayne, a graduate of Brooklyn Law School,is a senior partner with the Mineola, New York law firm of Shayne,Dachs, Weiss, Kolbrener, Stanisci, and Harwood. John Shurtleff. John Shurtleff received his B.A. degree from HarvardUniversity where he majored in Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit, andhis LL.B. degree from Columbia University.
