This year our Action Day symbolized the very BIG IDEA that
“Our action towards others influences the community and the world
immensely.”
Action is engrained in the philosophy of the units we teach and is recognized as a self driven
initiative of a child as a result of his learning. Action is also a vision for any student to advocate
themselves in a form of involvement or service. It is considered a vital component and an oppor-
tunity for a PYP inquirer to work for the deterrence of problems they identify in their home,
school, community and react to it by finding meaningful solutions. It involves an ongoing cycle of
reflecting, choosing and acting.
This Action Day represented a significant event in the life of our students. For our fifth graders,
it was a chance to put together all they had researched in the PYP and validate their understand-
ing of a chosen real word problem in the form of a PYP Exhibition. It was also a day, where all
the other grades revealed their understanding of Action in an authentic and evocative context
by reflecting on their learning and applying it to real-world problems through a suitable sequence
of action which they had identified based on their research in the Units of Inquiry.
This Action Day demonstrated a series of events.
The Act demonstrated by 5th graders was a feeling of empathy towards gender bias. It was a
higher order thinking of self-questioning the role of women in society by determining their im-
portance. They also shared their talent on the aspect of bullying in school and made other stu-
dents and adults aware of its consequences in the future.

Our students from Grade 1 danced to make us aware of healthy eating habits. They gave the message that every time we eat is an op-
portunity to nourish ourselves. Let's make the best choice of nourishing our body the appropriate way.
“We drive, we travel, or we move around from place to place using different mediums. But are we safe then or do follow safety
rules?” This was the message delivered by K2 students. They taught us the impact of rash driving and the negative aspects of using cell
phones in the driving seat.
Kindergarten 1 presented the need and role of community helpers in our society. The act portrayed the vital character of these peo-
ple in our lives.
The smallest and tiniest students from grade nursery exhibited the importance of different seasons. They acted by reflecting and
showing us the ways to stay safe during varied climatic conditions.
The middle and senior school students contributed by exhibiting various stalls of food and games for the audience and children. The
money collected from all the stalls was donated to an orphanage adopted by our school.

Meeting Mr. Kapil Mehrotra with their proposal to observe Anti-Bullying Day
PYP Exhibition - Its that time of the year when the
entire school community is eagerly looking forward
to the experiences which the Grade 5 students are
about to share. The theme being “How we organize
ourselves” the students chose various social issues
which they would like to inquire about. They came
up with a list of issues and gave their preferences on
what they would like to work on. Based on the pref-
erences the students were grouped into 5 groups
each working on a different social issue. They fo-
cussed on Child Labour, Female Infanticide, Bullying,
Discrimination and Dowry.
During the tuning in stage they analysed what they
know about the topic, what they would like to know
and where they will look for the needed information.
They started researching about their specific social
issues by finding out the causes, effects and the im-
pact it has on the society. While analysing the news-
paper articles they understood that in spite of having
laws in place these issues are still prevalent in the
society. They also compared and studied the statis-
tics around the world relevant to these social issues.
They understood that there is a lot more which they
need to do to contribute to eradicate these issues
completely.
The students decided on the action they could take
as their active step against these issues. They wrote
acrostic poems and designed posters against these
issues.
Bullying being the issue which they could act upon
and relate to, they came up with several things to do
within the school community. They presented it
during the Action Day and created awareness among
the school community.
They also decided to observe Anti-Bullying Day and
gave a proposal to the Academic Director, Ms. Lak-
shmi. They designed a concern box in which students
could drop their concerns about Bullying. They also
stuck posters in the classrooms and requested stu-
dents to stand up against Bullying. It’s a pleasure and
definitely a proud moment to see kids take responsi-
bility of their own learning.
Getting approval from Ms. Lakshmi Reddy to finalize a date for observing the
Anti-Bullying Day every academic year.
Students putting up posters in all the
classrooms.

Math
Working out problems on Ratio—Peer teaching
In Math, students worked on the topic Ratios. They learnt how to find ratios. They understood equiva-lent ratios by depicting them in drawings. They were able to relate to it easily when a pictorial representation was made. They also worked on writing ratios as fractions. They were able to com-pare three fractions and express them in a simplest form. They understood the application of ratios in real world situations and solved a number of word problems.
English
Making a poster on parts of speech.
In this unit, English was well integrated with the UOI. The students learnt to present their finding through an explanatory text. They understood the features of a Persuasive Text and applied this while creating their posters. We focussed a lot more on Grammar and worked on subject and predicate. The students were able to identify the subject and the predicate in a sentence and were able to ana-lyse them. They also worked on Clauses. They understood the difference between a sentence and a fragment and started applying this in their writing.

Students took action by planting
saplings in school campus to take
care of the environment around them.
In the unit on the theme “Sharing the Planet”, stu-dents of Grade 4 understood the importance of taking care of the environment around them and also to share it with other living things. As a provocation, students went on a nature walk around the school campus to know their environ-ment. Students understood the terms like habitat, ecosystem and biomes and connected with their home, city and country. Students inquired into different biomes across the world and understood that plants, animals and humans adapt to the cli-mate of that biome. Going further into the unit, students inquired hu-man impact on the environment and its effects. As an action plan, students planted tress around the campus and wrote a letter to the management to change the leaking tap in the girls washroom.
Math
Inquiry about fractions using manipulatives.
Students learnt the concept of fraction and its real
world use. As a provocation, students identified the
use of fractions in the recipe and shared it amongst
friends, Students also learnt fractions using manip-
ulatives which makes them understand the use of
fractions well.
Concepts like Addition and subtraction of like and
unlike fractions, fractions on a number line, equiva-
lent fractions, conversion of fractions into decimals,
and fraction of a numbers were studied. Students
applied their understanding by solving real life word
problems.
English
Students learning report writing One-minute speech in class—oral
presentation.
Grade 4 students were introduced to report writ-ing.. Students were familiarized with report writing text type using sample texts. Slowly, through mod-elling, they were asked to identify the sample para-graph with question and a suitable heading. This gave the students the insight of what to write in each paragraph of the report. Pronouns were inte-grated as a grammar concept with report writing. Students also prepared for one-minute speech. Everyday one student takes the centre stage in class to talk about their chosen topic like favourite writ-er, holiday, freedom fighter, family, school, or coun-try. A presentation rubric was shown to everyone which informed them about the ways of presenting like volume, expression, eye contact/ body lan-guage, pace, speed and content. Presenters were given peer feedback on the areas of improvement.

the units.
Grade 4 students showcased their learning to the
whole school on Action day through a skit and
dance on one of the burning issue—deforestation.
Through the skit, students showed the importance
of trees which is the habitat of many animals. When
the trees are cut, not only the animals lose their
homes, but also there is an imbalance in the food
chain which is again detrimental to the humans in
future. After their presentation, students presented
their learning under the different themes to their
parents.
Science Experiment—PH balance of water
PH experiment in science lab to test the water of the school.
Students visited the science lab to test the PH
(potential of Hydrogen) balance in both the drink-
ing and tap water in school. They got familiarized
with the PH numbers, colours and their meaning.
The water was tested by dropping PH solution.
When the water changed its colour, students
checked out the colour and the relative number in
the PH chart and concluded that our school water
, both tap and drinking are safe to use.
Students were handed out the PH strips to check
for the PH balance of the water at home. They
were also introduced to procedural writing with
aim, hypotheses, steps, result and conclusion.

Water sources in school Uses of water
The Water unit was interesting as we started the provoca-tion with a single bottle of water to be used in class for the day which actually brought a clear understanding of the central idea. Some learning engagements that children real-ly enjoyed were looking for sources of water in school and creating the water cycle bag. As per the question formulat-ed, their inquiry into the water cycle made it clear as to where rain comes from. Other than the basic use of water, they also got to know about the other major benefits. Their curiosity to understand how much of water is on land was taken further by watching videos and looking at the maps. Learning new terms like evaporation, condensa-tion, precipitation and collection was challenging. It was great to see this age group taking serious actions about the usage of water and also talking to peers and family about it. Overall this unit was engaging and fun filled and gave way for lot of interesting inquiry. They also made flash cards on saving water which was put up in the school campus.
Math
Time by the hour Half past
Telling Time: Learning how to tell time is so much fun! In my opinion, it's one of the easiest math skills for first graders to master and they all desperately want to learn how to tell time, so having them already become so moti-vated definitely helps. Each child made their own clock. Besides the fact that it is super fun and hands-on, we got them excited about telling time. It also helped them to focus on how a clock looks and works, where the numbers are and what order they go in. They may have looked at a clock a thousand times but not really thought about what direction the hands move. Something about holding the numbers in their hand and putting them in order themselves builds that conceptual understanding. Plus, they get to feel ownership over their own clock and have one at their seats to manipulate when doing time worksheets and activities.

Action Day
Choose healthy food
Action day in PYP – ACTION may take different forms and may be taken by an individual or by a group of students. On this day Grade 1 performed a Musical drama to make choices of healthy and unhealthy food. The students showed a lot of en-thusiasm to exhibit their understanding through their performance.
All the units of inquiry were displayed for them to talk about their understanding and this day helped them in making connections to what they have learned, applying a variety of real life skills, demon-strating an enduring understanding through con-cepts and reflecting on the attributes of the learner profile and attitudes.
Action Taken
Save water!
“Water is a limited resource and used in many different ways around the world” The students were able to understand that we share the water available, and we need to do something in order to control the usage of water. They had an understanding that water is a limited resource and has to be used in a proper way. They realized that access to clean water is a human right and our unwanted usage can lead to shortage of this precious resource. The students also thought that everybody should do something to help the others who don't have enough water and also its important to keep the existing water bodies clean. To spread the message in school, the first graders made flash cards to put up in the water areas. They also looked for leak-ages to be fixed with the help of the school com-munity
Robotics
Robotics in fun
Robotics classes give students the opportunity to dive deep into the world of robotics and explore how computer programming and robot design can solve problems (big and small) !
The junior robotics educational kits like LEGOS help create a perfect mixture of fun and imagina-tion that can help expand the child’s creative mind. Grade 1 used these Legos to create different water sources and explained the different parts used in creating the source.
Some students worked in teams to plan, build and modify their creation of a Hydro power plant to show how water is used to generate electricity. Students developed thinking, social and problem-solving skills while creating their own project.
