The faculty and staff of Calexico High School believe that our student’s will be able to compete with students across the state of California. In order for your child to compete successfully, several factors must be taken into consideration:

• Students must be held ac-countable for their actions

• Students must be on time to every class everyday

• Students must not be absent more than 10 days the entire school year!

• Students must pass all their classes without exception

• Struggling students must seek help from their teachers; and attend after school tutoring

and/or • Take advantage of all Satur-

day study sessions. I invite you to sit down with teachers, together we will make sure your child makes good choices. Opportunities for your teenager to find success in his/her academic classes are abundant. To en-sure this, I need for you to contact your child’s teachers as soon as possible. We are sending out a progress report to you within the next 10 days. Teachers are provided with a “Prep Period” Monday thru Friday to plan for their classes and to meet with parents and students. A school

such as ours with 2100 plus students can be overwhelming; please make every at-tempt to meet with your child’s teacher first. It is my opinion that you will find Calexico High School easy to visit. Take time to call Ms. Linda Luna if you need to make an appointment with a teacher. I would like to take you on a tour of our instructional classes. The pride at Ca-lexico High School is surging and aca-demic success continues to rise. Stop by and visit with our new Athletic Director Mr. Joe Apodaca. Witness the success or our Volleyball Program, under the direction of first year Coach Claudia Lopez. Girls and Boys Cross Country Teams are under the direction of veteran Coach Mr. Rojas! Most recently the Vol-leyball squad won the Monte Vista Tour-nament in San Diego. Additional recog-nition must go to our spirited Cheerlead-ing Program under the direction of spon-sor Mrs. Rose Moreno-Gerardo whom has sustained and ignited our Bulldog Pride. Finally, our marching Band is under the direction of a new director Ms. Karnopp and the Drill team is sponsored by Ms. Solano. Most recently we introduced a new brand of football under the direction of New Head Coach Alfredo Silva and the Girls tennis team was taken over by first year coach Mr. Xavier Rodriguez. I am very proud of what our students have accomplished this year; however, I need

your help! If you are interested in joining or helping out the Athletic, Band or FFA Booster Club call Mrs. Burgos at 768.3888 Ext. 4197. The Athletic Booster Club welcomes you and they need your help! If your teenager isn’t experiencing ath-letics, then I would strongly recommend them joining our State Recognized and most recently Nationally Recognized FFA program under the direction of Mr. Johnny Esquer, Mr. Dan Galan, Mr. Dan Ramirez and Ms. Markie Severtsen. On another note, the life of the school is in the hands of our ASB leadership pro-gram; I am very proud of what ASB stu-dents plan day in and day out. This year student club memberships have increased and are experiencing positive growth under the direction of ASB advisor Mr. Noriega. If your teenager is looking to join a club, call the ASB office @ 768-3888 ext. 4010. By working together we can make a positive difference in your son/daughters education. If you would like to meet with me, call my secretary and make an ap-pointment at your earliest convenience. Pride, Honor, and Excellence, Gilbert Barraza, Principal

Calexico High School was estab-lished in 1912 and this year marks 95 years of Bulldog Pride. Spirit Week for Football Homecoming 2007 will begin on Monday, Octo-ber 29 and continue through Friday, November 2. The theme for this year is “Back To School …Old School.” We invite all CHS Alumni to come back to school and help us make our Football Homecoming 2007 a community celebration. Spirit week will include a variety of activities meant for all CHS Stu-dents, Staff, Alumni and Calexico Community Members. For students and staff, Mimi Monday, Twin Tuesday, Halloween Wednesday, Mexican Thursday, and Spirit Fri-day are the dress up days for the week. On Wednesday, Halloween will be celebrated with a club day and costume contest during lunch time. Also on Wednesday, the Homecoming Skit Class Competi-tion will be held in Varner Gym after school. On Thursday Night, everyone is invited to join us at our Night Pep Rally. Entertainment will include performances by both our beautiful and talented cheerleaders as well as from our CHS Mighty Bulldog Marching Band. Nine Honorable Alumni will also be presented with a plaque honoring their induction into the Imperial Valley Football Coaches Association CHS Hall Of Fame. And finally, this year’s CHS Football Homecoming 2007 Hon-ored Alumnus Award Recipient will be announced and presented with a plaque.

All the celebration leads us to Fri-day, November 2, 2007. The day will include a parade, a tailgate carnival and the Football Home-coming Game. The parade will begin at about 4:00 pm and will start at the corner of Belcher Way and Encinas Ave. It will head south on Encinas Ave and turn West on Second St. From here it will head into downtown before it turns around and heads the same way back to CHS. The parade will end at the football field at about 5:00 pm. After the parade, the tailgate carnival will begin and will con-tinue until the football game be-gins. Booths will be set up with many delicious food items for eve-ryone to enjoy. Our Bulldog football team will be hosting the Palo Verde Yellow-jackets with a 7:00 pm kickoff. Halftime festivities include the Homecoming Float Class Competi-tion and the presentation of our Homecoming Court. The Football Homecoming 2007 Court will include Class Princesses, Dukes and Duchesses for each of the fall sports, and of course Her Royal Highness, our Calexico High School 2007 Football Homecom-ing Queen. For all CHS Alumni, we invite you to remember the good ol’ days. Join us, support the Garnet and White, and remember that “Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog.” -Frank Noreiga ASB Director

Counselor’s Corner Welcome back to another great Bulldog school year! There are lots of activities and events planned during the month of October so make sure you stay updated and well-informed. All Grades: Graduation Status: It is very important that you are aware of your student’s current grad status: g.p.a., credits, CAHSEE status, deficiencies, etc. (If you are not sure, please see your student’s counselor.) Remember, to receive a CHS diploma and to participate in the graduation ceremony, the following requirements need to be completed: • 2.0 overall grade point average (GPA) • 220 total credits • pass all required classes pass both the Mathematics and English Language Arts sections of the CAHSEE

Cyber High: Seniors and juniors: If you are cur-rently deficient in credits and/or re-quired classes, the Cyber High pro-gram may be for you. This on-line program provides students certain courses they need to meet graduation requirements. Students will need to attend after school sessions three days per week until the coursework has been completed. A parent conference is required to participate in this pro-gram. For more information, see your counselor. Homework Center: The Homework Center is now open Monday through Thursday, from 3:00-5:00 in the CHS library. Students can receive support and tutoring in all aca-demic subject areas.

Seniors: College Applications:

Seniors! If you will be attending a four-year university (UC, CSU or private) in the fall of 2008, don’t forget application and testing deadlines (SAT and/or ACT). UC/CSU campuses require that all tests be taken by December. Remember, November is the month to file applications for most California pub-lic universities. (Parents: please en-courage your student to complete their applications before the deadline!) Application Workshops: On October 18th, an informational U.C. Application Workshop will be held in the library during 2nd and 3rd periods. We will review the entire application, includ-ing the personal statement.
