People are talking about this thing called Lampe Berger but what is it? During formal dinners in France and through out Europe, the hint of rose in the room had long been a ritual for centuries and often coincided with the lighting of the after-dinner cigar. The pure and light scent of the rare rose perfume comes from the Lampe Berger. As common as afternoon tea in Britain or dinner by candlelight, the Berger Lampe is a long time French tradition. Not only is the fragrance of rose delightful year ‘round, but it also destroys smoke and unpleasant odors. Over one hundred years ago Maurice Berger, a pharmacist, discovered the catalytic qualities that enable Lampe Berger to absorb and destroy offensive odors and tobacco smoke. Today, they continue to operate according to this same unique method. What is Lampe Berger and how does it work? Lampe Berger is a decorative fragrance lamp that effectively destroys odors and bacteria in the air while increasing oxygen levels and perfuming your environment. Lampe Berger uses a catalytic burner that reaches 140 degrees Fahrenheit to combust a special alcohol based liquid fuel. The burning fuel releases molecules into the air that capture and destroy odors while dispersing essential oils. Are there benefi ts in using Lampe Berger? Yes! Within just a few minutes of use Lampe Berger purifi es the air by destroying odors and airborne bacteria. It increases oxygen levels in the air. The fuels contain essential oils that are made from natural botanical extracts. These oils perfume the air and provide aromatherapy. The history of Lampe Berger: Maurice Berger patented the Lampe Berger in Paris in June of 1898. During the early 1900’s, French institutions where hygiene was most important such as hospitals and mortuaries. At that time the lamps used methyl alcohol, which gave off formaldehyde on combustion. It was effi cient but smelled unpleasant. In 1927, Maurice Berger sold the company to Jean-Jacques Falliot. He changed the process to use ethyl alcohol, which has the sent of apples on combustion. This change moved Lampe Berger into the consumer market. Falliot began collaborating with the great bottle designers of the period including Galle, Lalique, Baccarat, Saint-Louis, Sabino and Tharaud. In the 1930’s sales reached approximately 20,000 lamps a year. Exports began, but had mixed success. Many failed because ozoalcohol was considered a perfume product and was taxed as a luxury item. Lampe Berger suffered during WWII. Falliot died in October 1940. His son, Gilbert, succeeded him. To further the company’s problems, raw materials became almost unobtainable, and then bombing in
1943 damaged the factory. Following the war, production began gradually since raw materials were still diffi cult to fi nd. The
war resulted in a lower standard of living, therefore production of luxury crystal models
were abandoned and the porcelain and earthenware models were created.
By 1973, Lampe Berger was producing 80,000 lamps per year and the company was sold to the retired industrialist, Marcel Auvery. His son Phillippe
took over in 1989 and in 1992 he set up the fi rst Lampe Berger subsidiary in New York. In 1998, Lampe Berger began the prestigious signature line of lamps by famous designers. They also began using new materials such as
enamel, pewter and opaline. Over the years, Lampe Berger pieces have
become highly sought after and collectible. While new styles are introduced each year others are
retired making them much more valuable and much more diffi cult to obtain. There is
a Lampe Berger for every budget with prices ranging from about $45 for a complete kit to several thousand dollars. Many people buy several lamps to use in different areas of their home or offi ces and many people purchase them just to collect the unique and beautiful designs.
As for fragrances, there is a choice of 43 fragrances, all natural, fl oral,
ambers, sweet, spicy, classic, and contemporary, to help create a special
atmosphere in homes, offi ces, waiting rooms, and wherever there is a need for comfort and well-being.
When opening my store in 1995, I researched this product through the library’s
archives. I contacted the distributor in New York and sought after a product that would bring
my customers back to me month after month. After reviewing the Houston market I found that no-one in Houston was carrying these little beauties, I was willing and able to give them a chance when no one else wanted to invest. I
did!!! Now after 10 years it’s the latest craze. My philosophy about Lampe Berger is: “If they didn’t
do what they were designed to do, they would not still be on the market after 100 years.” To see more than 130 designs, and to view my retired lampes collection, stop by Burning Desires 6370 N. Eldridge pkwy. @ the kroger signature, 713-937-4600, Monday – Saturday 10:00 am – 7:00 pm. We will be happy to demonstrate how the lampes work. Exclusive offer for LOE & LOEN residents, The fi rst 10 residents that purchase a Lampe Berger will receive a free demonstration DVD about the history of Lampe Berger..

Last month we talked about ways to provide food and water for wildlife; now let’s talk about the other equally important components of a backyard habitat garden. Cover or shelter in a wildlife habitat gives wildlife a place to hide from predators. I saw the importance of cover first hand a few years ago in the garden we had at our home in San Antonio. I was weeding one afternoon (big surprise, I always seem to be weeding) around a large bed of Lindheimer muhly grasses when a native sparrow dived past me and into the base of one of the clumps of grass. A split second later, a large hawk flew by, a few feet over my head. The hawk was a little startled by my presence and flew off over the house and out of sight. A few minutes later, I heard a rustling noise as the sparrow hopped out from under the grass, looked around, and flew off to continue his afternoon activities. Had the sparrow not been able to hide in those grasses, he would have ended up as the hawk’s afternoon snack. Installing plants and trees that will grow to a variety of mature sizes is the best way to provide cover for wildlife. Some birds prefer the canopies of tall trees, while others prefer shrubs. Birds also prefer to have trees and shrubs near bird feeders so that they have a place to perch as they wait their turn at the feeder, or a place to crack the seeds they’ve taken. Think “layers of foliage” as you add plants to your landscape, from groundcovers to tall shade trees and everything in between, including grasses, shrubs, and understory trees. Having
Thyme Out for Gardening: Encouraging Wildlife, Part IVplants of various heights will also make your landscape more interesting and attractive. Your landscape should include evergreen shrubs and trees to protect wildlife during the winter from both predators and the cold weather. Many butterflies also use trees, shrubs, and/or groundcovers as places to roost for the evening or sometimes for the winter. Butterflies also need safe places to bask in the sun as they wait for their bodies to warm up enough to fly in the mornings. As they form their chrysalis, caterpillars will usually attach themselves to somewhat protected areas under branches and fences to continue their development. The wooden butterfly houses that you sometimes see in stores are of questionable value as shelter. They look cute in the garden, but butterflies seldom use them. Frogs, toads and lizards use their camouflage coloring to hide from predators and they also hide in a variety of areas in the garden. Some frogs seek cover in and around ponds, while others hide in trees. Some species will hibernate during the winter in the mud at the bottom of ponds and creeks. Some lizards hide in plants and shrubs, while others hide in rocks or under groundcover. Toads prefer dark cool places to hide such as the crevices of the rocks at the edge of ponds, waterfalls, and flowerbeds, holes in the soil, and under ground cover. The pottery toad houses you see in garden shops actually do
(Continued on Page 9)

Lakes on Eldridge NorthThyme Out for Gardening - (Continued from Page 8)attract toads and give them a nice hideaway. To make your own toad house, simply turn a clay pot upside down and tuck it under a plant in the garden, propping one side of the rim on a rock so that the toad can go in and out. A pot with a piece of its rim missing works even better and you won’t have to prop it open. By providing cover with a variety of plant sizes and forms in your garden, you’ll also satisfy the nesting site requirements of most birds that are likely to visit. Having a good supply of nest building materials (twigs, vines, grasses, etc.) on hand also helps the birds as they settle in for the breeding season. Doves seem to be able to nest just about anywhere, including your hanging baskets, while some birds such as bluebirds and purple martins, benefit from having birdhouses available for their nests. Most birds won’t use just any old birdhouse, however. The birdhouse or nest box must be tailored to the specific bird’s needs as far as interior dimensions, the size of the entry hole, and even the placement of the house a certain number of feet above the ground and in a certain location. These requirements are important to protect the birds from predators, including other birds. The birdhouses should also have appropriate air circulation and drainage, and should be easy to clean out at the start or end of the breeding season. You shouldn’t just put up a birdhouse and walk away – they do need some monitoring and maintenance. Consult the Houston Audubon Society and Texas Parks & Wildlife for more
specific information on nest box requirements. As we discussed last month, butterflies don’t make nests, nor do frogs, toads, or lizards. They each lay their eggs in an appropriate site for their young to develop. Butterflies utilize larval host plants, while frogs and toads lay their eggs in water and attach the egg mass to a water plant. Most lizards such as anoles and geckos, lay one or two eggs at a time under leaf litter, rocks, and other moist areas. I hope I’ve been able to show you through the last few columns that habitat gardening isn’t hard, and there’s no big mystery or secret to it. It’s simply a matter of finding out what your garden birds, butterflies, and reptiles need for their life cycles, and providing it for them. And when you’ve created a garden that is attractive to wildlife, I think you’ll find that you’ve created a garden that’s very attractive to people too! Next month we’ll finish our habitat gardening series with a discussion of some other things you can do to protect and encourage wildlife in your yard and in the neighborhood. June Gardening Notes: If you haven’t done so already, go ahead and put in some heat loving herbs like basil and lemon verbena. Basil is an annual and starts setting out seed fairly quickly. Pinch it back as long as you can, and consider starting new basil from seed every couple of weeks during the summer so you’ll have a steady supply. If you haven’t tried lemon verbena, you’re missing out on a wonderful summer herb - the leaves give a lemony fragrance and taste to teas and baked goods. Lemon verbena is a tender perennial, which means that

it should come back year after year as long as our winters are mild. You can also plant it in a sunny, protected area. Lemon verbena has a slightly “untidy” growth habit and can easily grow four feet tall and wide; put it in a moist, but well drained spot in full sun and use the leaves frequently to keep it pinched back. Parsley will also do well for you during the summer as long as you plant it in an area that gets some protection from the intense afternoon sun. Parsley is one of the larval foods for the Black Swallowtail butterfly, so look for the green, black and yellow caterpillars. I always try to plant extra parsley – some for my cooking, and some for the caterpillars. June is also a good time to put in some heat loving annuals and perennials. Annuals such as zinnias, cosmos, Gomphrena, verbena, and portulaca will thrive in the sun, while coleus and caladiums prefer shade. Even the new sun tolerant varieties of coleus and caladiums seem to prefer some protection from the intense afternoon sun, especially the reflected light and heat from concrete streets, walks, and driveways. Plant perennials such as penta (a tender perennial), milkweed (remember the Monarchs!), bulbine, plumbago, lantana, and ruellias and you’ll have color right into fall. Because we’re already into our long, hot, Houston summer, pay more attention to your watering, especially with new plantings. You want your annuals and perennials to have adequate moisture, but not too much. Established trees and shrubs can go longer between
waterings, but they still need at least one good deep watering a month. Sprinkler systems don’t provide the deep watering that trees and large shrubs need – only a soaking rain or a soaker hose that’s allowed to drip over the root zone for a couple of hours can do that. Invest in a soaker hose and use it during dry spells. As most of the trees in our neighborhood are still fairly young and many are still struggling to survive the transplanting stress, give them a deep watering every 2 to 3 weeks if we haven’t had sufficient rain. I’ve enjoyed discussing gardening questions during our recent LOEN gardening and nature group meetings – we have a knowledgeable group and we’ve all learned some new things. If you have a gardening or nature question and can’t make it to one of our meetings, just e-mail me. We’ll all benefit as our group will have a good discussion and you’ll receive a thorough answer in a return e-mail.Until next month, happy gardening!By Lisa M. LOEN Garden & Nature Club The LOEN Garden & Nature club is a group of neighborhood residents (guys and gals) who are interested in learning more about landscaping in our community, finding good resources, addressing yard and pest problems, learning new planting techniques, exchanging plants and participating in fun community activities. We would love for you to join us! We meet every second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm. If you are interested in joining, send Lisa Carpenter an email at [email protected]. At our last meeting, Lisa Rawl (a master gardener and master naturalist) answered numerous questions from members about pests and lawns. June’s meeting will be held at Lisa Rawl’s home. Call Lisa at 832-467-2781 for directions and bring an outdoor chair. See you there!
Call BeforeYou Dig!
The Util i ty Coordinating Committee (UCC) is a Damage Prevention Council. Please allow us to share some important safety information with you.
If you, or a contractor hired by you, are planning any type of digging (such as landscaping, installing sprinkler systems, swimming pools, spas, fences, decks etc.), you should first call the Lone Star Notification Center at (713) 223-4567 or (800) 669-8344 to identify potential buried powerlines, pipelines, or other service lines. A National Common Ground study reveals that fifty percent of underground utility damages are caused by people digging without knowing the location of buried utility lines. One careless dig can cause the following:♦ Loss of service - Entire subdivisions, shopping malls and medical centers could lose electric power, gas service, telephone service, cable TV, 911 service and cellular phone connections. Someone in your neighbohood may depend on life support equipment which requires electric power.♦ Expense - Labor, supplies and equipment to repair underground facilities can cost hundreds of dollars, in some cases thousands. Remember that insurance companies pass the cost onto consumers.♦ Threat to life and health - If you hit a power line with mechanical equipment or hand digging tools, you can be shocked or electrocuted. If you hit a gas line, chances are you will cause a fire. For safety’s sake, plan your project. Call the Lone Star Notification Center 48 hours before you dig. Utility companies will come out and stake their buried lines free of charge. However, in Houston and some surrounding areas, power lines on private property may not belong to the utility (CenterPoint Energy) and will not be staked. You may contact private location companies for this service for a modest fee. Private location companies are in no way affiliated with the UCC, Lone Star Notification Center or CenterPoint Energy. To request the location of underground utility lines, call the Lone Star Notification Center at 713-223-4567 or 800-669-8344. After waiting 48 hours, call the CenterPoint Energy hot line at 713-207-5463 if you have problems locating a gas or electric line.
