PIANO “It is forbidden to complain” Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Passionist Family, More than a month ago during the General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis met a psychologist by the name Salvo Noé, an author of many books and motivational courses. At the end of the audience Mr. Salvo pre- sented the Pope with a book, a bracelet and a sign. Having received the gifts, the Pope’s attention fell immediately on the sign and looking at it he said: “I will put it outside my office door where I receive people.” The sign read in Italian: “It is forbidden to complain.” The warning sign goes on to explain: “offenders are subjected to a syndrome of victimism that lowers the mood and the ability to solve problems. ” And that “Sanction is doubled if the offense is committed in the presence of chil- dren.” It ends by saying: “to become the best of yourself, you must focus on your own potential and not on your own limits, so stop complaining and act to change our life for the better.” Keeping his simple ways of teaching us profound truths, Pope Francis reminds us yet again of the damaging ef- fects of complaining and gossiping. We all know that how easy it is to complain rather than to do something about the very things we complain about. It is very common to see in public offices in India complaint/grievance boxes affixed to the walls where people can write out their complaints and place them in the box with the hope that those in powers would do something about them. Yes, it is the right of the common man that his or her grievances are heard. However, it is becoming more evident these days that we are becoming intolerant of everything around us and that we are becoming more prone to complain than to find solutions. Randy Pausch, an American Professor of computer science who died in 2008 at the age of 47 authored a book called The Last Lecture in which he says: “If you took one-tenth the energy you put into complaining and applied it to solving the problem, you’d be surprised by how well things can work out. Complaining does not work as a strategy. We all have finite time and energy. Any time we spend whining is unlikely to help us achieve our goals. And it won’t make us happier.” It is a proven fact that happy people complain less and encourage more. It is my hope that in every community, family or gathering we make it a point not to complain but offer words of encouragement and extent support to the efforts being made to make life better for all. I want to thank everyone in the Vice Province for the generosity and willingness to work towards making our life and ministry in India and abroad a worthwhile venture. Thank you everyone and may God bless you all. Fraternally, Paul Cherukoduth C.P, Vice Provincial. PASSIONIST INDIA ACTIVITIES NEWS OUTREACH JULY 2017 Volume 4, Issue 7

PIANO “It is forbidden to complain”

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Passionist Family,

More than a month ago during the General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis met a psychologist by the

name Salvo Noé, an author of many books and motivational courses. At the end of the audience Mr. Salvo pre-

sented the Pope with a book, a bracelet and a sign. Having received the gifts, the Pope’s attention fell immediately

on the sign and looking at it he said: “I will put it outside my office door where I receive people.” The sign read in Italian: “It

is forbidden to complain.” The warning sign goes on to explain: “offenders are subjected to a syndrome of victimism that

lowers the mood and the ability to solve problems.” And that “Sanction is doubled if the offense is committed in the presence of chil-

dren.” It ends by saying: “to become the best of yourself, you must focus on your own potential and not on your own limits, so stop

complaining and act to change our life for the better.”

Keeping his simple ways of teaching us profound truths, Pope Francis reminds us yet again of the damaging ef-

fects of complaining and gossiping. We all know that how easy it is to complain rather than to do something about

the very things we complain about. It is very common to see in public offices in India complaint/grievance boxes

affixed to the walls where people can write out their complaints and place them in the box with the hope that

those in powers would do something about them. Yes, it is the right of the common man that his or her grievances

are heard. However, it is becoming more evident these days that we are becoming intolerant of everything around

us and that we are becoming more prone to complain than to find solutions.

Randy Pausch, an American Professor of computer science who died in 2008 at the age of 47 authored a book

called The Last Lecture in which he says: “If you took one-tenth the energy you put into complaining and applied it to solving

the problem, you’d be surprised by how well things can work out. Complaining does not work as a strategy. We all have finite time and

energy. Any time we spend whining is unlikely to help us achieve our goals. And it won’t make us happier.”

It is a proven fact that happy people complain less and encourage more. It is my hope that in every community,

family or gathering we make it a point not to complain but offer words of encouragement and extent support to

the efforts being made to make life better for all.

I want to thank everyone in the Vice Province for the generosity and willingness to work towards making our life

and ministry in India and abroad a worthwhile venture.

Thank you everyone and may God bless you all.

Fraternally,

Paul Cherukoduth C.P,

Vice Provincial.
