“If this is the Olympic Games, then welcome to the Opening Ceremony!”

These words, spoken by IRMC President/CEO Jeff Susi, welcomed more than 30 teenage volunteers (TAVs) and their families to the TAV Appreciation Dinner on Aug. 13.

This summer, 70 teen volunteers gave IRMC 2,555 hours of their time.

“The Olympics is certainly about going for the gold. One of the goals this year was to inspire a generation—that would be you—our TAVs,” said Mary Jane Stewart, director of Volunteer Services. “Like the Olympics, the TAV program is about hard

work, commitment, diligence, good coaching, friendship and respect.”

As each volunteer present was awarded a certificate by Jeff and given emblems and pins depending on how many hours they worked, Mary Jane shared glowing comments from the staff about the teens who volunteered in their areas. Lynn Hubbard, R.N., MPH; vice president/CNO, Val Larcombe, Esq., senior VP/chief legal counsel; John Peeples, vice president and chief Human Resources officer; Cindy Vanek, senior VP/chief operating officer, and Betsy Whisman, director, Marketing Department, attended to show their support.

As always, the Cafeteria underwent a total transformation for the annual event, this time with hurdles and an array of sports equipment, red, white and blue balloons, stars and stripes sunglasses and hats, glittery star necklaces, and flags and posters representing various countries. The Endless Summer Fun menu created by Richard Condon, executive chef, included clever menu items such as 500 Meter Race Salad, Discus Pizza, Swimming Fish ‘n Chips, Olympic Gold corn, Sharp Shooter Rounds carrots, Sculling Boats potato wedges, Relay Racing Batons fries, Olympic Flame Jell-O Parfaits and a London Olympic U.K. Flag sheet cake.

Dr. Charles Mackett, MMM, FAAFP, IRMC senior vice president and chief medical officer, spent July 22-29 in Fukuoka, Japan, conducting lectures and small group workshops, and demonstrating physical examination skills to Japanese residents, nurses and staff physicians. Because Dr. Mackett is still a member of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) faculty, he has an annual commit-ment to teach in an international location. He is told each year where he will be traveling, and he has been sent to Japan the last several years.

Additionally, he was the UPMC guest commenting professor during Internal

intelligence platform that gives physicians the ability to integrate quality and utilization data. Using this physician profiling dashboard application, physicians are able to maintain or improve quality of care while simul-taneously containing healthcare costs by eliminating inefficiencies and unnecessary variations in care.

Why use Crimson? The Joint Commission requires

credentialing while achieving quality and patient safety goals. IRMC has partnered with Crimson to help meet the requirements for Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation and Focus Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE/FPPE). Crimson will allow us to meet The Joint Commission requirements while achieving our quality and patient safety goals.

What are the Affordable Care Act and the Physician Compare Website?

The Affordable Care Act is a patient protection law that requires the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to display hospital-level results on core measures, mortality rates, use of medical imaging and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). The Physician Compare website will be a public website to compare physician data as required by CMS and will likely be based on the same kinds of data gathered by Crimson.

How does this data help reimbursement and what does this mean to physicians?

CMS’s Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) program links payment to performance. This program will provide incentive payments and penalties, based on performance or improvement on a set of clinical and patient experience-of-care quality measures. This means physicians will need to comply with CMS core measures, infection rates and maintain high HCAPHS scores to receive full reimbursement. Crimson provides simple indicators to track compliance and to allow people to see the big picture.

The Crimson Initiative

Dr. Hal Brown, IRMC family practitioner, wanted to make it possible for a young person, Kayla Manning of Sebastian River High School, to begin laying the groundwork toward becoming a physician. Dr. Brown generously donated the funds to provide a scholarship for Kayla to attend Florida State University’s College of Medicine “mini med school.” Kayla, and 60 other students from around the state, shadowed physicians and medical students, and received on-site experience through visits to rural health centers. Students were guided in the college testing and applications processes and attended faculty lectures.

The Florida State University College of Medicine recognizes that growing the doctors of tomorrow begins with cultivating

a passion for medicine in the formative years. Because many careers are decided while students are still in high school, the College of Medicine began the summer “mini med school” during three Summer Institute sessions. Individuals and corporations who likewise want to pave the way for tomorrow’s physicians in their

own communities sponsor these sessions.Dr. Brown, a member of the Ft. Pierce

clerkship faculty since 2008, teaches first-year summer clinical practicums and third-year family medicine clerkships.

The hospital has purchased and installed the EasyLobby®Secure Visitor Management System in the Main Lobby, Emergency Department and Behavioral Health Center to identify who is in our building and provide an improved level of security for our patients, visitors and staff.

The Joint Commission requires that hospitals manage safety and security risks under Standard EC.02.01.01, Element of Performance C7 “The hospital identifies individuals entering its facilities.”

The system was purchased and installed initially at the Emergency Department and Behavioral Health Center in early 2012 and implemented in the main lobby this month.

Visitors coming to our facility should bring a source of identification. If they do not have a photo ID, the security officer can take their photo using a webcam. The entire badging process takes less than 30 seconds.

To the IRMC Family:

Our heartfelt appreciation goes to all the wonderful CNAs, fantastic RNs,

patient physical therapists, Michael Smith’s (Call Center Specialist, Food

Services) kind voice on the phone, the kitchen staff, smiling housekeepers,

caring doctors, managers, employees, office staff and everyone who went

that extra mile to help care for Brande Rivera, R.N., Med-Surgical educator,

during our extended stay at IRMC during her illness.

We want to also thank the ICU nurses and doctors. Brande received

unbelievably precious care from everyone, from her first trip to the

Emergency Department in March through July. Taking that extra mile

to gently give a back rub or coming to our aid in the middle of the night

was priceless.

We want to express our sincere gratitude for the thoughtful gifts you sent.

The flowers and plants truly brightened the room and lifted our mood.

The precious notes and cards you left Brande just warmed our souls.

I know Brande appreciated all of your kind gestures. She spoke often of

her friendships with her many coworkers. I know you all meant a great

deal to her. Many of you expressed such beautiful sentiments that we

have no trouble seeing why Brande enjoyed her work so much. Being

surrounded by people like you was a large part of why Brande enjoyed

going to work at IRMC each day.

Thank you all so much for your kinds words, your generous gifts, and

most of all, for your friendship towards Brande.

The Family of Brande Lynn Vickers Rivera, R.N.

As many of you are aware, Brande Rivera, R.N., Med-Surgical educator, battled cancer bravely and with great courage; her battle was lost on July 26 when she passed away at the Hospice House surrounded by her family. Brande worked at IRMC since 1999. Even in the midst of her illness, she graduated from Florida Atlantic University this summer with her master’s degree in nursing as a nurse practitioner. Her perseverance and steadfast spirit is an inspiration to all of us.
