2 SCHANACHIE
BOOKBUZZ Bonnie Easton
My selections this month are an assortment of goodies for
you, but the common denominator of all three is death.
Girl Unknown: A Novel by Karen Perry (pseudonym for
authors Karen Gillece and Paul Perry) is a thriller about
undergraduate Zoe Harte who tells her history professor,
David Connolly, that she is his daughter by his former lover.
His wife and two children believe she has ulterior motives.
Two unreliable narrators take us through the growing hatred
that leads to murder. Is Zoe a manipulator, or just a girl des-
perate to be loved?
For true crime fans: West Cork is an audio documentary
of a podcast narrated by Sam Bungey and Jennifer Forde.
French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier was beaten
to death days before Christmas 1996 outside her home in
Schull, West Cork. The brutal crime has never been solved,
although there were several interesting suspects. Amazon
offers the audio for free until May 9.

er in the Board Room to discuss Saints for All Occasions:
A Novel by J. Courtney Sullivan. Two young sisters, Nora
and Theresa Flynn, leave their small village in Ireland for a
new life in Boston. Nora, the responsible one, marries a
man she isn’t sure she loves. Theresa is a party girl and is
caught up in all the glitz and glamour of the big city, and
becomes pregnant. Fifty years later, the two sisters share a
secret, but they haven’t spoken in years. Nora has four
grown children, each living their separate lives. Theresa is
a cloistered nun in Vermont. A death in the family dictates
that they must come together and face the consequences of
the decisions they made all those years ago.
Our spring schedule is:
April 20: Saints for All Occasions: A Novel by J.
Courtney Sullivan
May 18: A Man Called Ove: A Novel by Fredrik
Backman

Steak Shoot is Back!Pat Dowd
Believe it or not, we’re starting our 10th series of Steak
Shoot fun at 7:30 pm, Thursday, April 19! This “bingo like”
game has certainly made enthusiastic fans out of so many
people, and the mouth-watering steaks bring the many win-
ners back for more.
For those of you who have never played, it’s as easy as 1-
2-3. You simply pick your rack of three cards from a wide
selection, cover each card as the caller calls your numbers,
and as soon as all three of your numbers are covered, yell
“STEAK!” Each winner receives a package of two 8 oz.
strip steaks – and they are delicious!
So plan ahead right now – come alone or with a group or
friend. The 3rd Thursday of the month from April through
November is “Steak Shoot” night. Cost is only $10 per rack
of three cards, or $20 for three racks. Your admission price
enables you to play 24 regular games and our Bonus games.
Each night we also have a cash raffle -1/3 of the proceeds
to the winner, 1/3 to the Padraic Pearse Center, and 1/3 to
the “Holiday Cash” winners in November. Each month the
“Holiday Cash” builds, and previous months’ winners go
back into the barrel for every drawing.
The Padraic Pearse Center is looking forward to another
great “Steak Shoot” season and hope you’ll join in the fun.
See you at 7:30 pm on April 19!
I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death by
award-winning Irish novelist Maggie O’Farrell is a memoir
of 17 essays of the author’s near-death experiences. She tells
of a dangerous childhood, accidents, an encounter with a
disturbed person and her experiences with her daughter
Astrid who suffers with chronic eczema and the constant
fear of anaphylactic crises from allergies that send her to the
emergency room 12-15 times a year. In the end, she believes
her brushes with death are life-affirming and meaningful
through all of its chaos and randomness. For more reading suggestions, check out padraicpearse-

It was a wonderful morning celebration at the Club. Fr. Tom Johns was our Celebrant. It is always great having him with
us. He shared some of his memories of the club thru the years.
The music was led by Kathy Siath and she was accompanied by Mary Beth Ratchko-Gamez. The sound was just delightful.
A big thanks to Pat Homan for organizing the mass and setting up the hall.
Also, thank you to Colin Hatcher for serving the mass.
After mass we all enjoyed an awesome breakfast cooked and served by Kevin McCluskey and his crew of Michael
Byrne, Bill Homan, John Gurry and Tommy Curran.
Thanks to all who came and participated in the liturgy and celebration.
