Camp Lejeune Officers’ Spouses’ Club Mission Statement

The Camp Lejeune Officers’ Spouses’ Club is a private, non-profit fellowship and volunteer organization for officer spous-es at MCB Camp Lejeune. It was created to foster a comforta-ble atmosphere of camaraderie, support, and community in-volvement among spouses of active or retired personnel. We carry out our mission statement in three ways:

Socially - supporting members through networking and friend-ship at events like luncheons and sub-clubs. Charitably - using the time, talents, and energy of members to enhance the greater Camp Lejeune area. Generously - raising funds to go into the Charitable Distribu-tions Fund, which supports local organizations with monetary donations, and the larger OSC Scholarship Fund, which awards students and spouses with college scholarships based on both merit and academic excellence.

President’s Pen Spring Greetings! I hope you all are excited for the promise of a beautiful spring and all that is still to come. First I have to give so many thinks to some incredible people. Stephanie Williams, Mindy Strange and their com-mittee did a fantastic job putting together Basket Bingo. We had over 100 baskets that helped to raise money we will use to make a difference in our community. I also want to thank my II MEF ladies: the fabulous Jen McCarthy and Mrs. Cindy Fox inspired me with their amazing luncheon. I learned so much and had such a great time celebrating a new season with the fine folks from Williams-Sonoma. We have so many events coming up, and I hope you will all come out to celebrate the start of a new season and the end of our year.

Speaking of the end of a year, can you believe elections are just around the corner? It has all happened so fast, but I have had a lot of fun getting to meet so many people interested in carrying on the legacy of our great club. In meeting both new members and those considering board positions for next year, I have had the privilege of hearing your stories of how you came to be a part of the OSC. It really made me think back to how I felt when I first came here. If you are considering where you may fit in next year, I hope you will think about what an impact you can make on the spouses aboard Lejeune. Maybe my story will help. I remember first arriving at Camp Lejeune and being so completely overwhelmed by base living. I was excited to get a name sign, but very unsure of what the customs were here. I read every military survival book I could get my hands on. I even made rank flash cards so I could appropriately thank the guards at the front gate. I was completely fixated on not screwing this up, though what I was afraid of screwing up I couldn’t tell you. After settling in I started feeling lonely. My husband was gone all the time and I was filling my days with tasks such as cleaning my lint filters, color coordinating my closet, and sending out a search party for lone socks. I started to venture out to the playgrounds. I was THAT girl. I found myself talking to complete strangers at the playground about what I was going to make for dinner. In trying to make friends around my neighborhood I started to ask questions. What kind of things are there to do around here? What is this OWC thing? I was so confused by the feedback. One woman would rave about what a great time she had at an OWC function, and another would tell me how all the members were basically evil warlords. At first, I thought, “I don’t want to get involved with anything that could possibly give me more opportunity to embarrass myself for my lack of military knowledge.” In my head I thought it would be a firing squad and I would be the one being fired upon. So...I did nothing. I continued to go to the park, read a lot of books, and fill my time with all those tasks you never think about. Then I got smart. I thought, “Why am I going to let someone’s opinion, someone who I hardly know, form my own opinion? What’s the worst that can happen? I’ll go, and I’ll hate it, and I won’t go again.” So I went. And I went as myself...big hair, big heels and all. I can’t remember who all I met, but I don’t think I ever had a warmer welcome at anything I attended. I left and could have kicked myself for all the time I had wasted not getting connected and involved because of FEAR! I got more involved, and now the girl who was embarrassed by what she lacked is learning more than ever that it’s not about what you lack but what you’re willing to bring to the table. So here are some lessons I got from my experience that I hope will help you decide just how far you want to go:

1. Don’t be swayed by the opinion of another. You are your own ship’s Captain. Not to mention, opinions are like you know what!

2. NEVER make a decision out of fear. You’ll always lose. 3. Keep an open mind. You’ll miss opportunities if you don’t. 4. Be the change you want to see. You don’t like it? Change it! 5. Finally, be a “doer”. Don’t deny the world your gifts because of obstacles.

I think my experience is like many others. I am forever changed by what I have done in the OSC, and I hope you will be too. I am looking forward to the Joint Luncheon and the MLG Luncheon, as well as our Scholarship Dinner. Hope to see you all!

Baileigh K. Levée

Sincerely,

2013-2014 OSC President

Greetings Division Spouses! Happy Spring! I hope you are enjoying everything that comes with spring: the warm weather, spring sports, trees and flowers in bloom, and the return of flip flops. And - the Spring Craft Fair! Please plan to attend on April 5-6, at the Para-dise Point O’Club, and support our OSC Scholarship Fund. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making Basket Bingo a success! I must say that Division has the best support, hands down. A big THANK YOU to every battalion, regiment, and unit that contributed baskets and individual

items! I hope everyone who attended had a great time. In a few short months, we will know all of the non-profits and charities that benefited from your contributions. In addition, the non-profits and charities will be recognized at our May luncheon, so plan to attend. I do not know about you, but I had a fantastic time at the MEF’s “Entertainment Diva” brunch with Williams-Sonoma last month. Who knew there were so many neat tricks to entertaining? I guess I will have to host more parties. If you have not had a chance to a luncheon this year, then you will not want to miss one of the most special ones, our Annual Joint Luncheon. The Officer’s Spouses’ Club of Cherry Point will host the event on April 24th at Miller’s Landing, from 10:30am-1:00pm. Mrs. Ellyn Dunford, spouse of Gen-eral Joe Dunford, Commander of all US and NATO Forces in Afghanistan, will be our guest speaker and she has a wonderful message. Please join us in celebrating friendships with other military spouses. Chelsea MacPhail and Laura Nelson, our Onslow County Relay for Life leaders (and Division spouses) have been working hard organizing OSC’s flocking and Relay for Life team. Thank you ladies, and a big shout out to all who have joined you. If you did not know already, Flocking has started and the “Division Divas” team is out there taking names and, most importantly, raising money and awareness for Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Breast Cancer. The Relay for Life event begins Friday, April 25th at 4:30pm at Northside High School. Please let me know if you are interested in participating. As we approach the end of our OSC year, please be thinking of recommendations for next year. This is your club, and I welcome your insight. I would appreciate any input you have to help continue to make our club the best it can be. Again, thank you for all of your support! Hey ladies! It was so great to see so many of you at the Basket Bingo event. Thank you again to everyone who donated to our Romantic Beach Weekend Getaway basket. We raised a lot of money for the Charitable Distributions fund. This month is the Spring Craft Fair on base. Stop by on April 5-6 and check out all the great crafts. Also, if you are able to donate baked goods for the bake sale please do

so by April 4th. Finally, the Annual Joint Luncheon at Cherry Point on April 24th is a great way to connect with other spouses in the area. Don’t forget to RSVP for this fun event! This will be my last submission as your MCI East Rep. My husband received orders to Hawaii and we will be moving there this month!! I would like to say farewell to all of the wonderful ladies I have met this year. I have had such a great time getting to know everyone, and I will miss seeing everyone at all the great OSC events. I would like to thank Mrs. Laura Castellvi and Mrs. Claudia Clark for everything they have done for me and our group this year. You ladies are amazing! Please keep in touch, ladies!! Best Wishes, Allison Hendrickson MCI East/MCB OSC Representative

Hello II MEF Spouses!! Happy Spring!! This past month was our busiest yet! I want to thank everyone who helped with Basket Bingo and with our luncheon. Our “basket” was absolutely fan-tastic!! Your generosity and enthusiasm for helping others in the community is so inspiring! Our Williams-Sonoma Easter Brunch was also a huge success! I would like to espe-cially thank my committee members who helped make it all possible: Mrs. Fox, Julia Fitzpatrick, Paula Stopa, Ann Pugh, Katherine Williamson, Summer Reaves,

and Amanda Helms. You ladies are so talented!! As we start the PCS season, I would like to wish our own Laura Jones, Publicity Chair for the OSC, a fond farewell as she heads off to her next adventure. Thanks Laura for sharing your amazing talents!! April will continue to be so much fun! Keep an eye on your inbox for more info! Thank you for all you do, and I hope to see you soon! Hey everyone! Thank you to everyone who do-nated to our basket for Basket Bingo! It looked great! As my husband says, don’t fall in love with the plan. Our lunch-eon has been changed to some-

time in May due to a scheduling conflict with the Joint Luncheon. Nothing else has changed; our theme is still Kentucky Derby, and it’s going to be awesome! We will be having planning meetings coming up in April, so make sure you check your emails! Thank you for all your patience, and for everything you do for the MLG! Katie Magee 2d MLG OSC Representative [email protected]

Hello! In April we have some exciting things happening. Friday, April 4th is our flight suit party starting at 4:30pm at the New River Of-ficer’s Club. Come dressed in flight suits, cammies, or your best 80s attire. It’s $10 to get in, and

we will have light snacks, a DJ, a cash bar, and a beer pong tournament. This is an adults only event. It is sure to be lots of fun, so I hope you all can join us! We are also looking forward to the Annual Joint Luncheon up in Cherry Point on April 24th. We are getting ready for the next year so if anyone is interested in being a part of the incoming board, please let us know at [email protected] Hope you are having a wonderful spring! Hello! NOSC would like to thank everyone who supported Mardi Gras Bunko and Silent Auction. The night was filled with beads, prizes, food and auction items. There are too many names to mention each one individually, but we are grateful for each person who contributed and attended. Several NOSC ladies attended Basket Bingo and we had a great time! I would like to thank Stepha-nie Williams and Mindy Strange for tireless hours of planning and a successful event. OSC Basket Bingo raises funds for Charitable Distributions.

NOSC members are looking forward to warmer weather and more fun times. Plans are in the works for a Couples Din-ner Club. We also continue to enjoy the weather whole walking. Every Tuesday the NOSC Walking Club meets at 8:15am in the Marston Pavilion parking lot. Please note the change of location. This is a fun time to be outdoors and enjoy girl time. A few dates to remember: April 5-6 is the Hidden Talents Craft Fair at the Paradise Point O’Club. Stop by the NOSC Bake Sale table on Sunday to chat while you refresh with yummy treats. On April 24, Cherry Point will host the Annual Joint Luncheon. On April 25, Onslow County Relay for Life begins at 4:30pm at Northside High School. Sherry Cato - Nominee for President My name is Sherry Cato, and it will be on honor to serve on the OSC Board as President for the 2014-2015 OSC year. I have been a Marine spouse for 16 years. I am the mother of two wonderful children, Rowan (age 9) and Peter (age 4). My husband and I live aboard the base, where he serves as the Provost Marshall. It is such an honor to be a part of this Marine Corps com-munity. I feel so blessed to be at Camp Lejeune among such a great group of spouses. I am always involved and volunteer frequently with many local organizations, to include local police programs, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and many others. I feel that every duty station has the potential to be even better than the last. I have a solid history of planning and fundraising for many charities and OSC clubs. I worked for a local maga-

zine that is dedicated to empowering and celebrating women in my previous community. Prior to this duty sta-tion we were stationed at Parris Island, Camp Lejeune, Quantico, the Pentagon, Okinawa and Alabama. Each place and OSC has helped me grow to be who I am today. During these tours, I completed my degree in Political Science from the University of Maryland, became certified as a Divemaster, and became a mother. You might say I’ve grown up in the Marine Corps. I been a part of an OSC since I was 19, gathering countless memories and experience that I hope to bring to the next board. My personal motto is to give more than I receive, and it has served me well over the years. I look forward to giv-ing the OSC as much as I have given at other duty stations. Thank you for allowing me to serve you and be a part of this amazing group of spouses. I sincerely look forward to meeting new faces and seeing old friends in the new term.

Katie Zyla - Nominee for 1st Vice President

I am pleased to be considered for the position of 1st Vice President for the 2014-2015 OSC Board. My experiences this past year as the 2nd Marine Di-vision Representative have increased my appreciation for our group. Being involved in the OSC and being part of something bigger than me (and all of us) is truly what I am grateful for. The OSC is a wonderful organization full of many talented, caring, passionate, dedicated spouses who I believe in and want to continue to serve with. As a former Marine, a Marine wife of almost seven years, and a mother of two young girls, I love the Marine Corps com-

munity and am committed to making it better any way I can. If elected, I would like to concentrate my efforts on creating an environment that fosters relationships and mentoring among our members. I will focus on our recruiting and hospitality efforts in welcoming guests at our functions and encouraging participa-tion in sub-clubs, event planning and community outreach, with the hope of carrying on our leg-acy of fostering a comfortable atmosphere of camaraderie, support, and community involve-ment among spouses. Thank you in advance for your support, and I look forward to another amazing, memorable year.

Stephanie Williams - Nominee for 2nd Vice President My name is Stephanie Williams, and I’m honored to be considered for 2nd Vice President for the 2014-2015 OSC Executive Board. I’ve been a Marine spouse for almost 18 years, which has given me the op-portunity to meet many wonderful military spouses through our 9 PCS moves. I have always been involved in spouses’ clubs, but I’ve been able to devote more time since staying home to raise our 4 year old daughter, Racheal.

While I was 1st Vice President and Golf Scramble Chairperson for the Fort Huachuca Community Spouses’ Club, I learned how much I enjoy bringing events to life and seeing first hand how im-portant the spouses’ clubs’ charitable work is in the lives of our military families and local com-munities. As soon as we received orders to Camp Lejeune last year, I knew I wanted to continue my involvement, which led me to jump in with both feet into the Camp Lejeune OSC as this year’s Fundraising Chairperson. My experience in coordinating Mobster’s Ball, the infamous Bas-ket Bingo, Golf Scrambles, and luncheons and volunteering for many other events will allow me to better serve you as the next 2nd Vice President. Thank you for your consideration.

Tamara Zagola - Nominee for 2nd Vice President My name is Tamara Zagola, and I am very excited to be considered for the position of 2nd Vice President for the 2014-2015 OSC Board. I have been married to my Marine, Michael, for 13 years, and we are very proud parents of a 13 year old daughter and a soon to be 10 year old son. My family and I have had the pleasure of being stationed at Cherry Point and Headquarters Marine Corps, as well as MARFOREUR-Stuttgart, Germany. We arrived in the Camp Lejeune area about 5 years ago, being stationed at Camp Johnson and now MCI East/MCB. I am currently the Camp Lejeune OSC Secretary, and the 2nd Vice President of the

Gourmet Club. When I am not typing minutes or cooking absolutely fabulous recipes, I volunteer as a Family Readiness Assistant and a Youth Bowling Coach at Bonnyman Bowling Center here on base. My past experiences vary. I have been a self employed photographer, an Event Planning/Catering Associate for MCCS Cherry Point, Financial Customer Service Representative at NFCU, and a CDC Preschool Teacher. My volunteer work includes being the Branch Relay for Life Coordinator/Fundraising Chair and Team Leader for Navy Federal Credit Union, as well as a volunteer for the Annual Cherry Blossom Marathon. I also volun-teered at the Marine Corps League Mickey Finn Detachment in Quantico, the First United Methodist Church of TR as a Youth Counselor, and as a Youth Soccer Coach while in Stuttgart. I feel I am a very dedicated, hardworking, and organized individual that could bring a lot to the position of 2nd Voce President. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to the upcoming 2014-2015 year and all the wonderful things that are awaiting this club.

Patti Meade - Nominee for Secretary My name is Patti Meade, and I am honored to be considered for Secretary for the 2014-2015 OSC year. I am a former Army Officer whose life changed forever 16 years ago when I met, fell in love with, and married the ONLY Marine Officer in my Career Level School! Joint Army/Marine Corps bil-

lets are tough to find, so a year later, after spending my entire life in the Army (first as a “Brat” and then as an active duty Officer), I resigned my commission and made the switch from “Hooah!” to “Oorah!”. Together John and I have PCSed back and forth across the country, endured deployments, and of course shared our favorite adventure of all - raising our two sweet daughters! Our family moved to Camp Lejeune this past summer after three amazing years in Stuttgart, Germany. Living in Europe was an incredible experience, but I am excited to be back among my Marine Corps family again! I look forward to the upcoming year and working with such an outstanding organization.

Jamie Collins - Nominee for Treasurer Hello! I am Jamie Collins, and I am excited to be considered as your Treas-urer for the 2014-2015 OSC year. I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 19 years in June. We have two wonderful kids, Eric (16) and Hailey (12), as well as two fur babies. So far in Adam’s 18 years of service, we have been stationed in Beaufort, Camp Pendleton, Colorado Springs, and Virginia, and are back on our second tour here at Camp Lejeune.

For the past year and a half I have had the pleasure of being your Advertising Chairperson and Dogwood Boutique Finance Manager. My other volunteer positions through the years include being a Family Readiness Advisor, PTO President, PTO Treasurer, and helping my children’s teachers as needed. I have been blessed to be a part of the OSC for the past two years, whether it has been sweating while decorating for our events, hiding in the dark flocking my neighbors, enjoying new foods at our luncheons, or just relaxing while having a drink with new friends at happy hour. I’m looking forward to continuing to serve you and our community in the upcoming year!

Jenny McCarthy - Nominee for Parliamentarian My name is Jenny McCarthy, and I am excited to be considered for the position of Parliamentarian for the 2014-2015 OSC Board. I have been a Navy spouse for 13 years, seven of which have been spent with the Marine Corps. I believe that your time as a military spouse is what you make of it. I really enjoy volunteering and working with all the amazing spouses that are in our community. This past year I enjoyed serving on the OSC Board as the II MEF Representative. The OSC has always been a place of friendship and community for me. This year has

been exceptional especially as my husband was deployed to Afghanistan all of 2013. I have spent time as the Heroes Elementary School PTO Popcorn Coordinator, a Family Readiness Assistant with II MEF (FWD), a Deployed Spouses’ Ball Committee member, and team mom for my daughter’s soccer team. In the past I have volunteered at L.I.N.K.S. as a mentor, and spent a year as Co-Mentor Manager here at Camp Lejeune back in 2005. I have served as a Key Volunteer or Family Readiness Assistant during each of our Marine Corps tours, and spent a year as Co-Key Volunteer Coordinator at MAG-12 in Iwakuni, Japan. During our time in Pensacola, we were stationed Navy side and I served as PTO Secretary at our daughters’ school. In my spare time, you will find me helping out in the classrooms of our three daugh-ters, or finding time in my schedule to get back in shape and tackle my dream of completing a marathon. Thank you for all you do for our community, and for your consideration. I look forward to serving you as your OSC Parliamentarian next year.

Calling All Volunteers for the 2014-2015 OSC Board!!

The Relay for Life event is approaching quickly. For those of you who have not been a part of Relay before, I want to briefly explain how this event helps to raise money to fight cancer. The American Cancer Society runs all Relay for Life events. The main event is held over the course of two days. Our event begins at 4:00pm on Friday, April 25th, and ends at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 26th. Dur-ing this event our team can participate in walking laps around the track, help to host our tent’s cancer awareness advocacy project (which I will clarify momentari-ly), or help sell items to continue our fundraising efforts. The main event is very exciting. There is a lot of entertainment for both children and adults, and plenty of refreshments (coffee, food and drinks) being sold by teams in their efforts to fundraise.

Our team needs members to help with many portions of this undertaking. There are many ways you can help out, even if you won’t be able to attend the main event. Our team will be fundraising over the next few months and we will need volunteers to help us with some of these projects. We also need help creating the awareness advocacy project. Our team has been assigned “invasive ductal carcinoma”, which is a specific type of breast cancer. During the main event, participants will be encouraged to check out the advocacy projects of each team. If you are crafty and want to help decorate our poster board, or have creative ideas for how to display the information, we would greatly appreciate your help. Your involvement can be as small or as great as you wish - every little bit will help! You can sign up online at www.relayforlife.org/onslownc. Our team name is OSC Camp Lejeune. Please feel free to email me with any questions. I will have a table at the OSC luncheon with information and a sign up sheet. Hope to see you there! Chelsea MacPhail [email protected]
