PrahaladRajkumar hasset big goalsfor himself. He wants toearn auniversitydegree, become asoftwaredeveloper, play lots ofbridge andwin a nationalchampionshipin an ACBLtournament.

At age 21, he’s already made so much progressthat he’s a favorite to accomplish all that andmore.

A native of Chennai, India, Prahalad learnedbridge at age 14 from his dad, who is an Indiannational champion. Prahalad played in many high-level tournaments during his high-school years. He placed third in a major IMP Pair event in hishome country and was named to the Indian JuniorTeam in 2001.

“A few times, I skipped my mid-year exams togo to the Indian Nationals,” Prahalad said. “Therewere no make-up exams, but I was doing so wellin my courses that my instructors just let it go by.”

Prahalad came to the U.S. three years ago tostudy computer science at the University ofMaryland. He played in Washington DC and NewYork City NABCs, where he entered as manychampionship events as possible. He particularlylikes the major team events.

“I really enjoy being able to practice andimprove and learn from other players,” Prahaladsaid. “I want to play against the best, and I hope toone day make a strong showing in the Spingold orVanderbilt.”

Prahalad says the tournament events are verydifferent in his home country. There are noflighted or stratified events, and the nationalorganization doesn’t have the resources topromote youth bridge. Teens and other newcomersmust play in the open sections at Indiantournaments.

Prahalad hasn’t played in any Junior eventsfor the past three years, but he has strong praisefor ACBL’s program and its participants.

“There are so many more opportunities here inthe U.S. for young players,” Prahalad said. “I havea strong appreciation for all of ACBL’s efforts to

Kessler surges past 10,000Here in the Daily Bulletin office, we don’t

meet too many players who want to publicize theirfailures. That’s just what Gary Kessler did lastWednesday, though, when he reported on howlong it was taking him to reach the 10,000-masterpoint mark. As of last Monday night, heneeded only .59, but he went point-less onTuesday and Wednesday.

We’re happy to report that Gary finally wentover — with points to spare — on Fridaymorning. Gary placed 3/4 in Bracket I of theWednesday-Saturday AM KO Teams for a pickupof 11.50. His teammates were John Russell, N.Barrington IL; Barry Harper, Regina SK; JackBryant, St. Louis MO; and Darrell Keel and SteveBruno, Peoria AZ.

Plaudits for thePartnership Desk

To the Tournament Committee:I have come to my first national tournament,

traveling by myself from Massachusetts. AlthoughI had scheduled a pair for the Silver Ribbon Pairs– with a partner from my hometown – and had acouple of other pre-arranged matches, I used thePartnership Desk extensively. My sincerest thanksand compliments go to them for the excellent jobthey did.

Especially, I wish to recognize Mr. Gail Carns, who made things very comfortable in the pairingprocess, particularly when I was rejected one timeas a partner. His pleasant attitude and helpfulnature contributed significantly to my enjoymentof the tournament.

Give ‘em a chance to go wrong

On the way to winning both the Sunday andMonday Open Pair events, Mark Itabashi ofMurrieta CA and Eric Leong of Oakland CA hadtwo especially memorable deals. Each involved aposition in the heart suit that gave the opponents achance to make an error.

On the first deal (Board 15 from Sundayevening), Leong and Itabashi pushed theiropponents to 5♠, then found a way to talk themout of making it.

(Hands rotated)Itabashi cashed the ♣A on opening lead and

shifted to a low spade. East drew four rounds oftrumps and led the ♦K. Itabashi knew thatducking the diamond was the best way to keepdeclarer out of dummy, but he also realized thatwould force declarer to lay down the ♥A and drophis singleton ♥K.

Itabashi made sure declarer had his dummyentry by offering up the Greek “gift” of winningthe diamond and exiting with the ♦J. Declarercould now run four diamond tricks, but eventuallytook the losing heart finesse for down one.

The next day, Leong found himself in 6♥ onthis deal (Board 29 from Monday evening; handsrotated):

♠ 8 2♥ J 10 8 7 5♦ K J 7 6 4♣ A

♠ Q J 7 6 4 ♠ 10 9 5 3 ♥ – ♥ K Q 4 ♦ 10 9 8 3 2 ♦ Q♣ J 9 5 ♣ Q 10 7 4 3

♠ A K♥ A 9 6 3 2 ♦ A 5♣ K 8 6 2

The opening lead was the ♦10, low fromdummy, ♦Q from East. Leong won the ♦A andconsidered how to play the trump suit. The normalsafety play of running the ♥J clearly wasn’t safeon this deal, as East was known to have asingleton diamond. But it certainly wouldn’t costanything to give East the illusion that a finessewas coming.

Leong crossed to dummy with the ♣A and ledthe ♥J to see if he could induce a cover. It worked– East split his honors and Leong was home freewith 12 easy tricks. Had East smoothly ducked the♥J, Leong would have undoubtedly gone up withthe ♥A and gone down in the slam, but he gavehimself the free extra chance and was rewardedwith plus-1430.

Vanderbilt and lost to the powerful Meltzer team.Since then, his team has won a compact KO eventand placed second in the top bracket of the four-session Toyes-Giftes Knockout Teams. His team-mates were G. Venkatesh, Los Altos CA; G.Prabhu, Ames IA; and R. Rajkumar (his father),Kanningat Krishnakumar and P. Ridhar, all ofChennai, India. On Friday, Prahalad andVenkatesh finished 13th in the Lebhar IMP Pairs.

Perhaps his most impressive showing in achampionship event was in New York City, wherePrahalad and his 15-year-old brother placed 32ndin the finals of the Life Master Pairs last summer.

In New York, Paul Soloway visited the DailyBulletin office to report on a diabolical ruse anopponent had pulled on him in the Life MasterPairs. Soloway didn’t know the young man’s nameat the time, but he does now. It was Prahalad, whoheld:

♠ 10 8 6 ♥ A J ♦ K 7 5 ♣ K J 8 7 5Prahalad chose to respond 1♠ to his partner’s

opening 1♥ bid and heard Soloway, on his left, bid a natural 2♠. When this was passed back tohim, Prahalad bid a smooth 3NT.

Soloway held ♠ A K 7 4 3 2 ♥ 3 ♦ J 8 4 2 ♣ A 2 and wastotally deceived. He was intent on not givingdeclarer a spade trick, so he led diamonds onopening lead and again when he was in with the♣A. This was not a successful defense, as the fulldeal was:

♠ J 5♥ K Q 10 7 6 4♦ A 6♣ Q 10 9

Soloway♠ A K 7 4 3 2 ♠ Q 9♥ 3 ♥ 9 8 5 2♦ J 8 4 2 ♦ Q 10 9 3♣ A 2 ♣ 6 4 3

Prahalad♠ 10 8 6 ♥ A J ♦ K 7 5 ♣ K J 8 7 5

As soon as Soloway made his second diamondlead, Prahalad showed his hand and claimed 12tricks. All Soloway could do was look on inadmiration.

“It was like re-raising in poker with nothing,”said Soloway. “He made a terrific bid of 1♠ – andhis 3NT bid was out of this world. He earned histop.”

1500 MPs; C = 0-500 MPs.Thus, the most experienced players are

placed in Strat A, intermediate players in Strat Band less experienced players in Strat C.Masterpoints are awarded for placings in all stratsbut gold points are awarded only in A and B.

The game proceeds normally — thedifference comes when the scores are tabulatedand ranked.

In a three-strat game, the scores are rankedthree times. The first ranking is done as in aregular open game. These are the Strat A results.

If a B or C pair does well in this ranking, they receive full credit for that performance. It isnot all that uncommon for a Strat C pair to placefirst overall, and they receive the full masterpointaward for that game.

Note: A pair is eligible for only one set ofmasterpoint awards and automatically receivesthe highest award.

The second ranking compares the scores ofonly the B and C pairs — the scores of the StratA pairs are eliminated. Once again, if a C pairdoes well, they receive points for their finishingposition in the Strat B results.

The third and final ranking compares thescores of only the C pairs — all the scores of theStrat A and B pairs are eliminated.

Strati-flighted Pairs: The top group plays ina game of their own — Flight A. The rest of thefield in divided into strats and plays as in aregular stratified pairs.

A recent innovation has been stratifyingwithin Flight A. Flight A-1 may be listed as3000+ MPs while Flight A-2 (or Flight X) maybe listed as 0-3000 MPs.

Opening lead: ♥A (ace from A-K at trickone in unsupported suits)

Bidding commentary: Normal. East doesnot count 2 high-card points for that ♥Q afterNorth’s vulnerable two-level overcall. It’sunlikely to be worth the cardboard it’s printedon.

Defensive commentary: South starts a high-low with the ♥10 and North continues with theking and jack.

Play commentary: With a heart overruffimpending, West does best to discard a diamondfrom dummy, a sure loser in any event. Theintention is to ruff a third diamond in dummyafter drawing two rounds of trumps. It’s a primoidea, but. . .

Defensive commentary: When South seeswhat West is up to, he can frustrate West by alsodiscarding a diamond at trick three. Now Westcannot ruff a diamond as South can overruff.Down one.

Stray jacks and queens in suits that have beenbid by the opponents are unlikely to be worthmuch. Count them at your own risk. However, ifpartner bids notrump after the opponents have bida suit, jacks and queens in that suit retain theirvalue.

When faced with a certain dummy overruff, consider the possibility of discarding a loser fromdummy in a second suit where declarer also has aloser. The idea is to ruff that loser later.

The results are compared and scored byInternational Match Points (IMPs).

Pairings for the first round are random. Pairingsfor succeeding rounds are determined by a team’swin-loss record or Victory Point total.

International Match Points (IMPs): the mostcommon method of scoring Swiss Team matches. IfTeam A scores plus 620 for bidding and making 4♠on Board 4 and Team B scores only plus 170 (theydidn’t bid the game), the difference is 450 — whichconverts to 10 IMPs. The IMP chart is shown on theinside of your convention card.

Victory Points (VPs): a method of scoringSwiss Team matches. After the scores are comparedand converted to IMPs, the IMP total is converted toVictory Points. A team’s VP total may be used todetermine its next opponents and its final standing.

Side Game Series: single-session pair gamesthat pay red points. The Morning Side Game SeriesI, for example, will be played at 9:00 a.m. the firstFriday, Saturday and Sunday of the Reno NABC.Pairs may play in one, two or three sessions. Onlypairs who play in at least two sessions are eligiblefor overall gold points.

Flighted pairs: When flighting is used, the fieldis divided by expertise or experience or both intoseveral separate games. Flight A — “unlimitedmasterpoints” — will be open to all players whilethe remaining flights will be limited. Flight B mightbe 0-500 MPs or 0-1000 MPs while Flight C mightbe 0-300 or 0-500.

Each flight is scored individually, andmasterpoint awards are made for each flight.

The masterpoint holdings of the playersdetermine their flight. If one player is quite expertwhile his partner is new to the game, the pair mustcompete in Flight A.

In flighted events, you may play up but notdown. That means you may play in Flight A orFlight B even if your masterpoint holding qualifiesyou for Flight C. Conversely, you may not play inFlight B or Flight C if you are a Flight A player.

Stratified Pairs: The idea is to compete againsteveryone but to be ranked only with your peers.

Each pair is assigned a stratum or “strat” basedon the masterpoint holding of the partner with moremasterpoints.

Example: A = 1500+ masterpoints; B = 500-

Glossary of bridge termsNew members of ACBL are often confused

by the array of terms they hear: knockout teams, red points, rookie. Here’s a list of terms and theirmeanings:

Knockout Teams: an event in which a team(of four, five or six players — with four playingat a time) plays another team. The losers areeliminated or “knocked out” while the winnersplay other winners until only one team remainsundefeated.

The length of a KO match may vary from asingle session to a full day (the Vanderbilt andSpingold) to a multi-day event (the BermudaBowl).

Bracketed Knockout Teams: a KO event inwhich teams are divided into groups — usually of8, 16 or 32 teams — based on their masterpointholdings. The top group — Bracket I — and allother groups compete in a separate event withtheir own set of winners.

Compact Knockout Teams: a shorterversion of Bracketed KO teams.

Swiss Teams: an event in which a team (offour, five or six players — with four playing at atime) plays other teams in seven-, eight- or nine-board matches. Team A sits North-South at Table1 and East-West at Table 2 while Team B sitsEast-West at Table 1 and North-South at Table 2.

for one side or the other.Suppose South leads a club. The defense now

threatens to score two club ruffs, two diamondtricks, a heart and a natural spade trick. As thecards lie, declarer is powerless to stop it.

There are a number of variations in the play, but they all lead to six defensive tricks:

1. Declarer tries to draw trumps. North winsthe second spade and uses diamonds twice to getto South for club ruffs. After the last ruff, he exitswith a heart and dummy is dead.

2. Declarer tries to set up the third diamond.South wins, gives a ruff and North leads back aheart.

3. Declarer simply gives up ruffs. North exitswith a heart sooner.

So, have North-South found their perfectmatchpoint spot of plus 400?

Well, let’s say that my choice of opening leads– the ♥K – was not optimal for the defense.

Pittsburgh player’s goal:bridge-for-credit courses

All her life, Liberty Pyros of Pittsburgh hasbeen overcoming obstacles. The first one sheremembers occurred when she was in the first grade, trying to make her way despite speaking almost noEnglish.

Pyros’s parents, both born in Greece, spoke onlytheir native language at home, so when Liberty wentto school for the first time she was at a distinctdisadvantage. With the help of a friend’s comicbooks, she learned her second language.

As an adult, she accepted the challenge of beingthe first female computer engineer at Westinghouse,a job that came with a good bit of pressure. Whenshe was hired she was told that if she did well theymight offer similar jobs to other women.

Now, Pyros, a bridge player and teacher, isfacing a new challenge – getting local colleges tooffer bridge courses for credit. She has beenteaching bridge at the University of Pittsburgh andat the Community College of Allegheny County andshe has worked up a presentation concerning whythe courses should be for credit.

Pyros, who has lived most of her life in thePittsburgh area, learned bridge while she wasattending Bethany College in West Virginia. Shewandered into the student center one day and wasasked if she played bridge. She said no, and the nextquestion was, “Do you play cards?” Pyros said shedid. “Then sit down,” she was told.

Back in Pittsburgh, she was working forNational Cash Register when a co-workerintroduced her to duplicate at a game at thedowntown YMCA. She played with the man’sgirlfriend the next time and they won. “I washooked,” she says.

The soft-spoken bridge and math teacher wasborn Liberty Zabetakis. She married Andy Pyros in1964, and they had four children. She had startedteaching bridge in her neighborhood, using a bookby George Gooden. One day, she saw an ad in thenewspaper for the local community collegerequesting proposals for new classes.

Here was another challenge. “I was new at thegame myself, and I had to work up the nerve to sayI could teach it.”

She called the community college and proposedteaching bridge, and they accepted. She has evenwritten her own teaching manual, entitled “A Bridgeto Creative Thinking.”

Her approach encompasses more than justteaching rules. “I train the mind how to think,” shesays.

Although she has not had success so far ingetting bridge into colleges for credit, Pyros isn’tdiscouraged. “I keep at it,” she says. “I love toteach.”

When making an announcement, use theannouncement word — such as “transfer” — andtap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or announces a bidshould make sure his opponents are aware that anAlert or announcement has been made.

New pre-Alert/Disclosure forms

If your partnership plays special overcalls, youmust fill out a new pre-Alert/Disclosure form andmake it available to your opponents when youplay in events that allow Mid-Chart and Super-Chart conventions.

This applies to NABC+, regional or higherknockout and Flight A Swiss games. Look for thelight blue forms on the table where conventioncards are available.

Table count near 9000Not counting the midnight game, the table

count at the 2005 Spring NABC in Pittsburghreached 8977 on Saturday.

Playing timeBy Roger Lord

Mike Flader is a busy tournament directorwho also writes the Ruling the Game column forthe ACBL Bridge Bulletin. As such, he doesn’t getto play a lot. He managed four sessions in theLebhar IMP Pairs at the Spring NABC, finishingan impressive 11th overall with Warren Foss ofOmaha NE as his partner.

This deal from the first final session showsthat Flader, of Eagan MN, can make good plays aswell as good rulings. The opponents were ChipMartel and Martin Fleisher.

Flader started with the ♠A and continued witha spade to his partner’s jack. Martel ruffed thethird round of spades low, then entered dummywith the ♦A, followed by a club. When Fossshowed out of trumps, Martel put in the queenfrom his hand. Flader won the king and, instead ofcarelessly playing back a low trump, he got outwith the ♣9.

Consider how the play would go if he exitedwith a low club. Martel wins the ♣6 in hand, ruffsa diamond in dummy, cashes the top hearts, pitching his other losing diamond, then ruffs aheart to hand high, pulls Flader’s trumps andclaiming for one down.

After the return of the ♣9, it’s a differentstory. Martel wins in hand with a high club, ruffsthe diamond with dummy’s ♣8, and when heattempts to get back to his hand with a heart ruff,Flader’s ♣7 turns into a trick sooner or later.

Also of interest: on a double-dummy basis,Martel could have made 10 tricks for down onewithout a diamond ruff simply by winning andrunning his trump winners, catching East in a red-suit squeeze.

In any event, plus 500 was good for 8.67IMPs for Flader and Foss.

New Life MastersErnie Dalton of Miamisburg OH was on the

winning team in the Compact KnockoutConsolation, earning enough masterpoints tobecome a Life Master. His partner was his wife,Judith, and their teammates were Marilyn andWayne O’Connor of Centerville OH.

Joan and Tony Viidik of Waterloo ON earnedtheir gold cards playing in the semifinal round ofknockout on Saturday.

were wonderful,” she says, “and I couldn’t haveasked for me.”

A key to the NABC, she says, was thesponsorship of PNC. Besides being the primarysponsor, PNC’s willingness to help gave impetusfor more than 60 other sponsors to join in. Gitchelsays Arlene Port and Judy Haffner did a fantasticjob of getting local businesses to help payexpenses at the tournament. “Arlene and Judydidn’t know how to take no for an answer,”Gitchel says.

Gitchel says she hasn’t played much bridge atthe NABC, so she still has some energy leftdespite the responsibilities of being tournamentchair – and it’s a good thing she still has somepep. On Monday, the day after the tournamentends, she goes back to work at the University ofPittsburgh, where she is a research specialist.

A thank youDistrict 5 has been the host district for the

2005 Spring NABC. The district isrepresented on the ACBL Board of Directorsby Sharon Fairchild. She stopped by the DailyBulletin office to offer some words of thanksto the tournament directors and the caddies,“who have done such a great job,” and alsothe Memphis ACBL staff and the volunteerswho have made the NABC such a success.

Berkowitz in a major knockout event. His partner,Cohen, now has won all the major ACBL teamevents, including the Grand National Teams andthe Spingold Knockout Teams.

Linda Granell, Shaleen Baze and Susan Davisare becoming famous (or perhaps that’s infamous)for their NABC headgear.

It started with flamingo sunglasses in Orlando. Now here they are ready for Easter. And many ofyou will recall the hundreds of waving shamrocksin celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

Granell, the ACBL’s marketing director, wasresponsible for the glasses and shamrocks. “I just

want to remind everyone we’re here to have fun.”But her friends Baze and Davis, both from

Atlanta, have started collecting other headgear justfor the three of them—including the ears and devilhorns earlier in the week.

“Given that the next NABC is in Atlanta, I’mquite sure Shaleen and Susan will outdothemselves,” Granell said. “I’m a bit concernedwhat they might come up with.”

Having fun went to their heads

Convention card reminder

• Each player must have an ACBL conventioncard filled out and on the table. Please note thatother types of convention cards, such as the WBFconvention card or homemade cards that do notsufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

• Each player is required to have a conventioncard filled out legibly and on the table throughouta session. Both cards of a partnership must beidentical and include the first and last names ofeach member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player hasa substantially completed card, the partnershipmay play only the Standard American Yellow Cardand may use only standard carding. Thisrestriction may be lifted only at the beginning of asubsequent round after convention cards havebeen properly prepared and approved by thedirector. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuinguntil the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership hasat least one substantially completed conventioncard but has not fully complied with ACBLregulations, the director may give warnings orassign such penalties as he deems to beappropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penaltiesis the encouragement of full compliance withACBL regulations.

No culture shock forGoddess of the SwordIt has been more than a decade since a wide-

eyed young woman from Iceland arrived in theUnited States with one purpose – to play bridge.

Hjordis Eythorsdottir – known to friends asDisa – is older and wiser now, but her focus is thesame. She now earns her living playing the game.As long as the milieu is a bridge table and goodcompetition, she will feel at home.

Eythorsdottir – whose first name translates toGoddess of the Sword – was “discovered” by thelate Ron Andersen, who regularly did vugraphshows at European and World Bridge Federationtournaments. Eythorsdottir was a member of theIceland women’s team and was well known acrossthe Atlantic.

In her words, Andersen “imported” her to theU.S.

She made a splash almost immediately uponarriving. At her first NABC, in Cincinnati in 1994,she was a member of the winning squad in thenational Women’s Swiss Teams. She has wonseveral North American championships since thenand she is always high on the list of Barry CraneTop 500 contenders.

Interestingly, Andersen had recruitedEythorsdottir to play with him in an effort to helpthe late Richard Hunt win the Top 500 in 1994.Hunt’s main rival that year was the late BobGlenn, and one of his supporters was CurtisCheek, now Eythorsdottir’s husband.

“We played against each other all year,” shesays.

All of 1994, says Eythorsdottir, remains ablur. “I came in February and had two or threeweeks off for the rest of the year,” she recalls.

Ten years ago this August, Cheek andEythorsdottir were married in Huntsville AL,where they still live. They are on the road a lotgoing to bridge tournaments, but the game is stilltheir passion despite the fact that it’s a job as well.

“I’m enjoying it more than ever,” she says.“There’s always something new, and you learnsomething every day.”

Eythorsdottir has been playing with GeorgeRosenkranz at the Spring NABC. “It’s fun to playwith him because he is intensely competitive,” shesays.

In June, she will travel to Tenerife, CanaryIslands, for the 2nd European OpenChampionship, where she has a date to play withJeff Meckstroth in the Mixed Pairs. She saysMeckstroth has had a big influence on her and onCheek. “He’s our bridge guru,” Eythorsdottir says.
