The Tale of Despereaux

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo

was turned into a dynamic, compelling pup-

pet show by 5th and 6th graders. They were

directed by Ms. Tombari and Mrs. Gello as

part of an after school club.

Performed on March 12th to a varied audi-

ence of students, teachers, parents, com-

munity members and visiting professional

actor Ron Paolillo, the puppet show was a

resounding success. Students adapted to

the book to a puppet stage play, created the

puppets, read the voices and did behind the

scenes prop support.

The students are pictured here with their puppets after a curtain call bow. Mrs. Tombari and Mrs. Gello,

their very capable advisors stand proudly beside them.

Ron, a seasoned actor said, "That was the best puppet show I've ever seen. I truly enjoyed myself."

Happy Birthday Fishers Island Library

On April 4th, 2009 the Fishers Island Library turned

105!

Elementary School children and their teachers pre-

sented the Librarian, Ann banks with a large birth-

day card. They sang Happy Birthday and celebrated

with birthday treats provided by program director

Cynthia Riley. Mrs. Riley's collection of character

hats added to the fun. After merriment students read

books, did some research and checked out books to

go home.

The students and their teachers go to the library on

a weekly basis to learn good library habits and to

engage in active pleasure reading. What better way

to begin a year of special celebrations than with chil-

dren.

The June Issue of the Fog Horn will provide notices

of special "birthday" events in June, July and Au-

gust. It will be a year long celebration!

Fishers Island Student Places at CT State Science Fair

Over 100 public and private school fairs, one regional fair, and two city-wide fairs feed the CT state science fair. More

than 15,000 students in CT compete for 500 spaces. CharlesDutka received 2nd Honors recognition, which means his

project was in the top 50% of the State fair. He also received a Special Award from Northeast Utilities: Environmental

Management. Charles was given a $250 cash award. He designed a household incinerator to burn cleanly and effi-

ciently and to defer oil cost by preheating water in a domestic hot water heater.

WATER REPORT

On Wednesday, March 25, 2009,

Charles Dutka, a 12th grade student at

the Fishers Island School, was named

the first recipient of the Edwin Horning

servation, awarded by the Fishers Island

Results of Conservancy Tests of Water Quality Around the Island

For over a decade the Fishers Island Conservancy has been testing the water quality of the waters in and around Fishers Island for potentially harmful bacteria. Originally the testing was confined to Hay Harbor and the surrounding ponds and streams. Over the past two summers the Conservancy has expanded the testing area to include West Harbor, East Harbor and several additional sites along the north shore of the island. In August 2008, Conservancy volunteers collected seventeen samples in West Harbor, East Harbor and points in between just off shore. The sites included Silver Eel Pond, Dock Beach, the Yacht Club and three sites in East Harbor: the Big Club dock, the estuary by the 16th hole as well as waters around the 14th tee. Choco-mount Cove and an area off of North Hill were also tested at that time. The samples were taken by a volun-teer boat and analyzed for Enterococci by Bal Laboratory in Kingston, Rhode Island.

The Conservancy is pleased to report that the results were at levels substantially below amounts consid-ered to be a hazard to people or marine environments.

This Conservancy program is a collaboration of volunteers and paid professionals who have diligently logged many hours to test water samples. It is financed with private donations from the Island community. If you have questions or would like to volunteer to help take and transport samples this year please contact the Conservancy through its web site, www.fishersislandconservancy.com

Island Girl

As the water swirls around me

The sand is squishing between my toes

Chill of the water makes my spine quake.

After awhile my hands start to prune

I wipe the beats off my chilled body

Then lie baking in the sun.

I can hear the seagulls caw their own harmony

And the children playing with each other

I am used to the sounds

Because I am an island girl.

I shall always be an island girl.

The above was written during a visit from Poet,

Devon McNamara which was sponsored by FI Li-

brary and IPP, March 2-5, 2009.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FISH-

ERS ISLAND SCHOOL LIBRARY

Fishers Island School Library was one of just

4,000 libraries across the United States to re-

ceive a We the People "Picturing America" book-

shelf grant. The grant provided 17 classic books

on the theme of "Picturing America". Spanish

translations of three of the titles and two bonus

titles were also included in the grant.

The stunningly beautiful books arrived at the

school in time for Leslie Tombari, school Library

Assistant to open them for the Board of Educa-

tion at the April 15th BOE meeting. At that meet-

ing, Mrs. Tombari was presented with a certifi-

cate of appreciation from Interim Superintendent,

Dr. Griffin. Ms. Tombari had taken the initiative to

apply for the grant, following through on all the

details. The School Library and the FI Library will

work together this summer and fall to provide

programming centered around some of the books

from the "We the People" Bookshelf.

IPP Easter Egg Hunt

The IPP Egg Hunt was a success even after

the rain!

Union Chapel News

Maundy Thursday

Like Jesus, who had been in Jerusalem to celebrate Passover the week of his Passion, our first event was a Seder dinner. Cyn-thia Riley did the planning, Diane Dexter boiled the eggs and made the charosett, while Laura Edwards prepared the lamb that Gus Kinsolving carved. The youngest child present, Erick Spinola, asked the first question, followed by Confirmation class members Amber Ferguson, CJ Finan, Emily and Katie Peabody.

Maundy Thursday is the observance of the ―mandatum novum‖, a three-fold new commandment of Jesus: ―Do this in remem-brance of me‖ [the Eucharist]; ―Do as I have done‖ [serve others]; and ―Love one another as I have loved you‖. The Passover din-ner of Jesus became the Last Supper, so everyone went into the sanctuary after dinner to participate in Communion in the manner of the Last Supper. Hannah Peabody, A. J. Eastman and C. J. Finan were acolytes.

Union Chapel‘s traditional Tenebrae Service followed the Last Supper Remembrance. Tenebrae is a Latin word meaning ‗Shadow‘. The Shadows of Caution, Indifference, Judas Isacriot‘s Betrayal, and the Desertion of the Disciples were read from the Gospel of Mark by Father Damian, Laura Edwards, Gus Kinsolving, Laurie Finan, and Pastor Rosemary, who officiated for the Se-der and Tenebrae service.

Good Friday

Friday‘s ―Darkness at Noon‖ service was the actual true but sad story of the trial, crucifixion and death of Jesus, rather dramati-cally read by Pastor Rosemary, and the Chapel remained open for Meditation. Later, several from Union Chapel attended the Sta-tions of the Cross at Our Lady of Grace.

Easter Sunday

At 6:15 a.m., an almost full moon was hanging over the water as the sun rose behind the Golf course hill. Fr. Damian and Pas-tor Rosemary led a joyful service, celebrating the Resurrection for about 40 people.

Chef Eliana Spinola was assisted by Janio, Deacons, the Finans and other volunteers to cook and serve the Community break-fast following the Sunrise Service. Families and friends gathered for the next three hours to feast on eggs, sausages, ham, pan-cakes and syrup, and fresh fruit.

At 10 a.m. Andrew Spinola on the trumpet, Madora Kibbe accompanying herself on the guitar, and a piano-viola duet by Susan Geist and Dave Denison made the happy Easter Worship special for the crowded Chapel sanctuary. Pastor Rosemary‘s message was based on the hymn, ―Because He Lives‖.

Fishers Island Merchants Association

The quote is from the Gazette 2009

"Island businesses have been distributing this shiny green sticker to

draw attention to the importance of supporting local merchants.

Concerned about off-Island competition, business owners formed

the F.I. Merchants Association in October 2007. Increased utility

and insurance costs, combined with the additional cost of receiving

inventory via the ferry, make it difficult for Island merchants to suc-

ceed without the loyalty of Island customers. Merchants say they

are making every effort to cut costs while continuing to provide

quality goods and services."
