Paul’s First Letter to the Thessalonians concludes on Tuesday. Wednesday, we begin a week of readings from the Letter to the Colossians, with its gracious salutation and encouragement. The readers are exhorted to see Christ as the “head of the body” noting that all is created “in and through him.” This week the Gospel readings move from Matthew to Luke’s Gospel, which we will read on weekdays from now until Advent begins. We will feel the special way the evangelist will highlight healing, mercy, the poor, women, prayer, the Spirit and a gospel for a new, all inclusive, Israel. H umility is a virtue we don’t see much in our times. It seems that bragging, swaggering, and arrogance

dominate our fashion for everything and our Internet conversations. Who hasn’t been irritated by the “trolls” who try (usually with bad grammar and poor spelling) to start an online fight with those whose opinions do not align with theirs? Our stores, catalogs, and online shopping sites are full of useless items geared in use and price to the very rich, as ordinary, useful things seem to fade off the sales scene. As the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the middle class is fading away. What is the antidote to this? Humility is a good place to start. Devotion to God is worth more than riches. “The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. God gives a home to the forsaken; [God] leads forth prisoners to prosperity.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

O P Dolce from Symphony #4, Charles Widor (1844-1937)

Widor was born in Lyon, Fance and died in Paris. He was organist for 64 years at one of the most prestigious churches in Paris, St. Sulplce. He transformed the literature written for the organ into a more orchestral style. His Toccata from Symphony #5 is one of the most famous pieces of music written for the organ.

O P March in F Major, Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911)

Guilmant was born and died in Meudon, France. He was a prolific composer. Today there are volumes of his music still in print. He also was organist at St. Sulpice in Paris (1868). Beginning in 1871 he held the position of organist at Notre Dame for 30 years.

N ext weekend, September 7&8, a representative from the Midtown Assistance Center (MAC) will

be speaking at every Mass to share information about the good works MAC sponsors. As a founding congregation of MAC, Sacred Heart has been supporting its work since 1986. Please help support MAC by bringing some canned goods/non-perishables to drop in the barrel in the vestibule. Some of MAC’s most requested and needed items are baby wipes, canned salmon, canned yams, canned beef stew and cooking oil.

A P L D The first observance of Labor Day is believed to have been a parade of 10,000 workers on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by Peter J. McGuire, a Carpenters and Joiners Union secretary. By 1893, more than half the states were observing “Labor Day” on one day or another, and Congress passed a bill to establish a federal holiday in 1894. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill soon afterward, designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day. While a national holiday, but not a religious day, we can remember all those who labor and toil for the good of all our communities.

O God, through human labors you continually perfect the immense work of your creation. Listen to the prayers of your

people, and grant to everyone employment that calls us to our best and unite us with each other, so that we can serve our brothers and sisters, and your world, through our work. This we ask through your Son Jesus Christ, who lives in unity

with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

C ongratulations to long-time parishioners Milt and Beverly Shlapak as they celebrate 60 years of marriage! Milt and

Beverly met while students at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. After Milt graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, they were married in 1959. In the early years of their marriage they lived in Wisconsin, Ohio, New York, Alabama, and Florida before settling in Atlanta in 1967. During those years of moving around, Milt was the chief project engineer on the Saturn V rocket program in Huntsville, Alabama and Cape Kennedy, Florida. Once they settled in Atlanta, Beverly (a college sophomore at the time of their marriage) finished her degree at Georgia State in 1969. Milt went on to work as a pilot for Eastern Airlines for 25 years. They have three children and seven grandchildren. They are also very active in parish work. Beverly has been in the choir for more than 30 years while Milt has served on the Finance Committee and as an usher. He has also been very involved in the Prison Ministry (20 years) and Hospital Ministry (10 years). Congratulations Milt and Beverly from your Sacred Heart family. In a long life with many accomplishments, 60 years of marriage is one of the biggest.

Milt and Beverly this year (above) and as beaming newlyweds (left) on August 22, 1959.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
