Notes from Teresa

President’s Party! *EVERYONE*, please make an extraeffort to dress in some Fun Era! It will really make an eventlike this memorable.

Speaking of that, I have a little story to share with you. Some of us have done this event before at a past President’sParty. Loved it!

The Mattoses, Olettas, Crums and Gissibles did not haverooms on the River Boat so we had to walk through OldTown to get back to our rooms. Someone called night cap!Well, of course, we couldn’t turn that invitation down. Tothis day, I can’t remember just what bar we stopped in, butit was full and loud. As we walked in, everyone noticed ouroutfits. Of course, I believe it was Ron who stated, “We’refrom the movie set at the River Boat.” Ernie had his violincase, (NO! Music). George, well he’s just playing the hitguy. Ron was just egging all of them on. We had the wholeplace going, “When was the movie going to play” and onand on the story went. What would you think if a group ofrough guys and HOT gals showed up in your bar? Talkabout a HUGE laugh. It went from bad to worse as morepeople thought we were movie stars. I told the girls, “I thinkwe’re all going to the pokey tonight if we spend anymoretime with these boys.” What a blast from the past!

Era Fashion News ….From Teresa Gissible

Trick or treat! I’ve had several of you ask me about Era Patterns. They are out there. You can go to thewww.MAFCA.com suite first. You’ll find a wide variety of styles and sizes to choose from. You register andrent them from MAFCA, and I do have this catalog for you to view if you like. Next, I’d check eBay, search1929-1981 women’s clothing patterns. They are pricey, so you’d better love it! Remember, that vintagepatterns are sized differently than today’s sizes. So check the measurements before you hit buy. I also have afew patterns of my own that I’m willing to share.

Go on line and look up Folkwear and Saundra Ross Altman’s Past Patterns for more styles. They arereasonably priced.

If you plan on making a garment, my recommendation is to use a fabric that is wash ‘n wear. That way youare comfortable and it travels well. Unless you are going into Reproduction Fashion judging, then you’ll needto check the Fashion Guidelines book.

Patterns found at the Saundra Ros Altman’s site:

“Anchors Away” for the USS Hornet Tour

Sunday morning, September 18, 2016, was the beginning of a beautiful day to head to Alameda to see the USSHornet. Thirty-eight of us gathered at the Sciabica Olive Oil parking lot and got “on board” the Storer bus and “sailedoff” on time toward our destination.

The traffic “flow” “streamed” along with very little delay, while inside the bus there was a lot of “friendly chatter”going on. Before long we reached the dock on time and “departed” from the bus and gathered “on the dock” around Jerryand Jan Lutterman, our tour leaders. The Leffingwells met us “on the dock” as they were already staying in the area. Jerry gave us a few instructions and we followed him up the “gangplank” and “boarded” the ship.

The Hornet is NOT a boat. The ship is HUGE and yet is smaller than its sister aircraft carriers of today. Once Jerrypurchased our 40 tickets, a gentleman docent directed us to an area on the hanger deck to watch a short video about theship and the do’s and don’ts while touring her. Following the video, we divided into 2 groups - - - those who could go upand down the ship's ladders (Navy talk for stairs) and those who preferred not to - - - and a second gentleman docentjoined us. Then we were on our way to see this historic ship.

So, here is a true or false question for you! This USS Hornet is the one and only U.S. Navy ship to be named such? The answer is false. There were other USS Hornet navy ships dating back to the early years of our country. A total ofeight were “bearing” the name, but this is the last and most recent USS Hornet. She was built during WWII in 16 monthsby WOMEN and men who were not serving on the war fronts. On the day of her launching, she was prayed for by arabbi, a protestant pastor and a Catholic priest. And she served through that war unscathed in battles, and went on to serveduring the Vietnam war as well as serving as a recovery ship for the Apollo manned space landings of Apollo 11 and 12after their trips to the moon. The USS Hornet is one the most decorated (Navy talk for awards) ship of the U.S. Navy. Ithas record high numbers of enemy aircraft destroyed by the ship and by her aircraft, which is displayed on a chart on onewall of the hanger deck.

While on the hanger deck, we saw displays of the types of aircraft that had served on the ship, the Airstream trailerthat was used to quarantine the astronauts after their return from the moon, as well as the huge elevators used to moveaircraft up to the flight deck, and much more. Prior to leaving for other parts of the ship our docent showed us to theheads (Navy talk for restrooms).

We headed up to the flight deck next. It is very, very long. From there we went up into the “island” superstructurewhere we saw the navigation and steering areas as well as where the captain and admiral kept charge of the Hornet.

Then we headed down many ladders (Navy talk for stairs) to the 2nd deck which is below the hanger deck. There wesaw the sickbay area (you know what that is Navy talk for). We also saw enlisted men’s berthing (Navy talk for bunks),the brig (Navy talk for jail), the mess area (Navy talk for dining room) and the kitchen used to prepare food for thousandsof sailors. We also got to see the engine room (each of the 4 engines are huge) and the torpedo storage area. Time “flewby” fast aboard the Hornet and it was time to meet the rest of our group on the hanger deck.

The USS Hornet was decommissioned in June of 1970. In 1991, USS Hornet was designated as a National HistoricLandmark and in 1998, she was opened as a museum to honor her sea, air and space history. During WWII, she had acrew of 3400 which included the air wing (pilots, etc.) and post WWII, she carried a crew of 3500 including an air wingalso. In WWII, she carried 100 aircraft (Navy talk for planes) and post WWII, she had 44 aircraft on board. Quite ahistory! She deserves a big salute.

We “disembarked” the hanger deck via the “gangplank” and got back “on board” our bus which was waiting for us“on the dock”. We then “veered” off on time to our lunch location which was at Oakland’s Jack London Square. Scott’sSeafood Grill & Bar was ready for us with reserved seating in a banquet room area. They had a very large brunch buffetarea set up in the restaurant. So many choices! With our tummies full, we “boarded” the bus again, on time, for our“cruise” back to Modesto. The bus “sailed” along and we arrived back at the parking lot about 4:30.

Thank you Jerry and Jan for all of the arrangements you made for our tour. It was very interesting and fun. (And Iwould do it again.)

On a side bar: On our way to Alameda, we passed by the Oakland Coliseum and it was game day. What a sight tosee all of the Raider nation tailgaters!

Ahoy to You!

Dianne Kriese

Please excuse the nautical puns, but I just couldn't resist! Also of note: The USS Hornet has overnight stays and parties and reunions that can be arranged. Their web site is
