President’s Message

I have heard about April showers all my life, but never

Jan., Feb., March AND April showers. Hoping all this

rain isn’t dampening your spirits for having fun and dancing.

We have some great dancing to look forward to. That brings

sunshine to my heart on these gloomy days. April starts with

our big membership meeting, supper and elections, and

dance. That will set our stage for another year as a club. We

have our anniversary dance, “Fiesta de la Noche,” May 6th.

Get ready for a wonderful evening with Darrell Kalmbach

calling and Tami Helms cueing. May 21st there’s a special

dance happening, see more in the upcoming events calendar.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish you all a blessed

Easter and spring season of new beginnings. See you across

a square!

A round 1953 a group of young and not so young

Ridgefield people under the sponsorship of the

Pekin Ferry Grange began square dance lessons.

Herman Pederson was our first caller. As this lively

club grew larger, they moved to the Pioneer Grange

to dance. The Pekin Ducks were the beginning of

big things in the square dance community.

Then in 1959 the club organized and joined the

Evergreen Council as Happy Hoppers. Many more

clubs were around then but only one (the Buzzin’

Bees) is older than the Hoppers.

Even from the very first, fun was the top priori-

ty. Guest callers from all over the Northwest kept

many visitors coming. Pioneer Grange became too

small so the next move was to Sara Grange. After

remodeling, replacing the roof and restoring, the

Happy Hopper Hayloft became the place to dance for

many years. During this time Jim Hattrick became

our permanent caller in 1977.

Plans were begun to construct a larger dancing

facility where larger groups could dance. Ground

breaking for the Clark County Square Dance Center

began on July 1, 1978. On December 16, 1978, the

Hoppers held a beginners jamboree at the new dance

hall. Upon completion of the hall the Grand Opening

of the square dance center was held on January 21,

1979.

All did not always run smoothly over the years,

and in the early 1980’s a split within the club reduced

the ranks somewhat. But new dancers continued to

replace the ones who dropped out. In April 2009 the

Happy Hoppers celebrated their 50th anniversary

along with the 32nd anniversary of Jim Hattrick as the

caller/cuer for the club. The theme for the

anniversary dance was “Hawaii Five-0”.

Over the years many dedicated club members

have contributed their time and money to insure a

future for the Hoppers. May their efforts and friend-

ships both on and off the dance floor continue the

legacy of square dancing for the enjoyment of the

next generation.

(Happy Hoppers History, continued from page 1)

N ow and then time goes by too quickly,

and we fail to recognize annual events.

Your Happy Hoppers membership dues

come to mind as one of those dates it’s easy

to overlook. If you have forgotten to renew

your membership, there is still time to take

care of the oversight.

One of the benefits you receive with

your membership is insurance through our

state federation for injuries you may suffer

in the event you accidently fall or trip dur-

ing a dance.

If you decide to renew your member-

ship, please make your check payable to

the Happy Hoppers Square Dance Club.

Membership dues should be given to our

club treasurer, Melody Mitchell. Annual

club membership dues are currently set at

$15.00 per person or $30.00 for a couple.

VISITATION NOTES By Carol and Danny Williamson

M arch 10th was an extra fun visitation to

Kelso-Longview. There were 22

Happy Hoppers having a great time with the

R Square D Square Dance Club. Adam

Christman was the caller, and Lonnie Sycks

was the cuer. There were six squares most

of the night. So many people were on the

floor that we “checker-boarded.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us at

this early Saint Patrick’s dance! Fun was

had by all with our old friends as well as the

new friends we made on Friday.

Our next visitation is to Fairway Village

here in Vancouver on April 24th. The dance

is on a Monday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

There is a wonderful lunch break at 1:30.

You are encouraged to bring a side dish to

share. Craig Abercrombie will be calling

and cueing. Please come and join the fun!

Hope to see you across a square soon!

May God bless you all!
