I recently enjoyed attending a Corporate Communion/Family Mass at St. Mary Cathedral. At that time Father Bernard Reilly gave a very spirited homily about an arti- cle he read with the headline “Don’t volunteer at your Church” (or something like that). It seems strange for someone to advocate not volunteering (particularly at our Church), because isn’t that what we are all about as Catholics? I certainly thought so. Father Reilly went on to explain that he also was taken aback by the headline, but when he read the article it seemed to make perfect sense. That is, as Catholics, we should not “volunteer” at our Parish, but we are “obligated” to serve our Lord and fellow man. We should not search out just those pleasant and easy opportunities for service, but we are obligated to serve in any capacity that we can. We should not think of it as volunteering, but as fulfilling our duty to our Church and Parish. On a similar note, I had the pleasure of listening to our Faithful Master, Dennis Henderson, address a recent District Deputy meeting about membership. The Faithful Master likened the joining of the Knights of Columbus to an obligation to receive the lessons of the Knights of Columbus, which are “Charity”, “Unity”, “Fraternity”, and “Patriotism”. By completing a Form 100 the Catholic Gentle- man is really “agreeing” to be open to be taught these principles, and in fact has an obligation and duty to complete his “journey” by taking part in each lesson. Now I know that some Brother Knights have expressed to me that they didn’t join the Knights to have another job, and I agree with them completely. But there are some obligations and duties that we cannot, nay must not, avoid. These include: Be more active in our Assembly. This could include attending at least one meeting a year, or one more meeting a year, if you are not actively participat- ing in our monthly meetings. Recruit new members to the 4 th Degree so that they may “complete their jour- ney” and receive the valuable and beautiful lesson of Patriotism. Assist the Assembly financially by paying your dues on time or looking for opportunities to help in Assembly fundraisers, such as selling advertising for the upcoming exemplification Souvenir Book. Prayfully consider joining the Honor Guard and serving your Brother Knights and Sir Knights at Corporate Communions/Family Masses, celebration of life (funerals and Chalice Ceremonies), advocating patriotism by marching in pa- rades, presenting the colors at community events (Lansing Lugnut seminarian nights), encouraging and celebrating our clergy (ordination Masses), and other special events. We are fortunate at Bishop Albers Assembly that we have one of the best, if not the best, Honor Guard in the State of Michigan (maybe the Province and beyond; of course, I am somewhat prejudiced in this regard). As you know, the 61 st Exemplification of Michigan District 2 is rapidly approach- ing. Please prayfully consider how you can help our Assembly grow in both mem- bership and finances. Every little bit helps: one new recruit or the sale of a one- page ad in the Souvenir Book could make all the difference if we all band together and not just “volunteer” our time and talents, but fulfill our duty and obligation as Sir Knights of the 4 th Degree of the Knights of Columbus. As always, I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meetings, and continue to solicit your suggestions about making our Assembly more productive in serving our Country and relevant to all of our Brother Sir Knights and our families. Gratefully and Fraternally yours, SK Daniel K. Reinecke, PGK

My Brother Sir Knights, part of the pleasure of being in the Honor Guard is to be able to visit some of the Parishes that make up our Assembly. I recently enjoyed attending a Corporate Communion/Family Mass at St. Mary Cathedral. At that time Father Bernard Reilly gave a very spirited homily about an arti-cle he read with the headline “Don’t volunteer at your Church” (or something like that). By completing a Form 100 the Catholic Gentle-man is really “agreeing” to be open to be taught these principles, and in fact has an obligation and duty to complete his “journey” by taking part in each lesson. Now I know that some Brother Knights have expressed to me that they didn’t join the Knights to have another job, and I agree with them completely. But there are some obligations and duties that we cannot, nay must not, avoid. These include: • Be more active in our Assembly. This could include attending at least one

meeting a year, or one more meeting a year, if you are not actively participat-ing in our monthly meetings.

• Recruit new members to the 4th Degree so that they may “complete their jour-ney” and receive the valuable and beautiful lesson of Patriotism.

• Assist the Assembly financially by paying your dues on time or looking for opportunities to help in Assembly fundraisers, such as selling advertising for the upcoming exemplification Souvenir Book.

• Prayfully consider joining the Honor Guard and serving your Brother Knights and Sir Knights at Corporate Communions/Family Masses, celebration of life (funerals and Chalice Ceremonies), advocating patriotism by marching in pa-rades, presenting the colors at community events (Lansing Lugnut seminarian nights), encouraging and celebrating our clergy (ordination Masses), and other special events. We are fortunate at Bishop Albers Assembly that we have one of the best, if not the best, Honor Guard in the State of Michigan (maybe the Province and beyond; of course, I am somewhat prejudiced in this regard).

As you know, the 61st Exemplification of Michigan District 2 is rapidly approach-ing. Please prayfully consider how you can help our Assembly grow in both mem-bership and finances. There is a beautiful “OLD IRON” cross mounted on the North side of the St Mary Cathedral parish hall

with a great story that goes with it. The cross was mounted on the West side of the now closed Holy Cross Parish School building approximately 30 feet above the entrance. The school building was the original Holy Cross church. This was the original Holy Cross Parish cross. It was rusty and the bottom was torn apart from years of wind, rain, snow, and ice. The diocese determined that it was not in good enough shape to take the time and expense to save it. . The 4th degree Knights of Columbus stepped in after receiving permission from the diocese and removed the cross from its perch. There were repairs to be made as well as some art work to match the base of the cross with the arms and top section. While the cross appears to be a simple 3 inch steel channel, it is actually made from flat iron

carefully hand welded into place. The knights acquired the skills of a very talented local welder named Ed Morden. Ed did his magic and the cross looked as sturdy as it did 80 long years ago. It still had to be sandblasted and painted. The 4th degree Knights of Columbus arranged and contracted these services locally. The cross was now a beautiful piece of history from the beloved Holy Cross Parish. The 4th Degree Knights donated the cross to St Mary Cathedral and mounted it to the right and above the parish hall entrance door. We offer special thanks to Mr Ed Morden for his time and talents. Ed, a modest man, donated his efforts in restoring the cross in honor of his dear friends, Elma Rose Joseph (deceased) and her husband Harry Joseph. Elma worked at Holy Cross Parish for many years. Thanks to Sir Knights Ken Watterson, Dan Fell, Bill Currie, and Dennis Henderson for all their time and effort on this very worthy project, and to Michigan District II 4th Degree for the funding. The Holy Cross Cross “LIVES”

Prayer for the Sick

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of

the sick, we turn to you in this time of

illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled,

alleviate our worry and sorrow with your

gentle love, and grant us the grace and

strength to accept this burden. Dear God,

we place our worries in your hands. We

place our sick under your care and humbly

ask that you restore your servant to health

again. Above all, grant us the grace to ac-

knowledge your will and know that what-

ever you do, you do for the love of us.

Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or

watch, or weep tonight, and give your an-

gels charge over those who sleep. Tend

your sick ones, O Lord Christ.

Rest your weary ones. Bless your dying

ones. Soothe your suffering ones. Pity

your afflicted ones. Shield your joyous

ones.

And for all your love's sake. Amen.

The power of prayer is amazing. We can multiply its power when we all join in

prayer. If you know of someone that should be added to our prayer list, or someone

healed by our prayers that can be removed from the prayer list please contact our

assembly Wellness Chairman, Terry Austin, at 488-9056.
