TEMPLE NEWS

From the Rabbi…………. Purim in February? Passover in March? Don't the Jewish holidays feel particularly 'early' this year? Well, there is a good reason for that.

This year the Jewish holidays are the earliest they can possibly be on the secular (Gregorian) calendar. In fact, this coming Rosh Hashanah will fall on September 5th. The last time Rosh Hashanah occurred so early in September was in 1899! After 2013, the next time the Hebrew calendar will fall so early on the Gregorian calendar will be 2089. In fact, the holidays cannot occur any earlier on the secular calendar.

But of course...the Jewish holidays are not early or late, they always take place on the same Hebrew calendar dates. The reason there is movement between the Hebrew calendar and the Gregorian calendar is because the Gregorian calendar is solar and the Hebrew calendar lunisolar. A lunisolar calendar is one in which each month is determined by the cycle of the moon, but the length of each year is approximately determined by the sun. I say approximately because the Hebrew calendar has no partial months. So every few years an additional lunar month is added to the Hebrew calendar. When that happens, that Jewish 'leap' year has 20 extra days. There is about an 11 day difference between the 12 lunar months and one solar year.

Just in case you are wondering why this is done - this is done so that holidays always occur at the correct time of year. For example, Passover (the spring holiday) must always occur in spring.

Leaving aside the technical details of the calendar, symbolically, the calendar is a perfect analogy for what it means to be a Jew in the modern world: we live with two different understandings of time. For much of our life we go about things fully in tune with the world around us. And then comes a holiday (i.e Passover) or a simcha (i.e. a Bar Mitzvah) or even a tzuris (i.e. sitting shiva), and we enter into Jewish time/holy time.

Think about Passover for a moment. Leading up to Passover we all prepare ourselves to enter into this other realm of living. We make arrangements for the seder and possibly prepare special foods. We prepare our homes by removing all the bread products. We stock up on way too much matzo. And then comes the seder...and the change takes place. Time actually changes for us. For a week we think and act and eat differently. To many Jews, this feeling is the highlight of their year.

But of course, just like the technical aspects of the calendar, the Jewish time is always present with us as well. We need not wait till the holidays arrive to feel times of holiness. Every day affords us opportunities to enter into the higher realms of existence.

This year, with the earliness of the holidays, I hope that you pay particular attention to Jewish time. I hope that you know there are always opportunities here at Temple Judea that act as entrances to spiritual living - Shabbat services, classes, social action, etc.

From my family to yours, I wish for you a holy, special and peaceful Purim and Passover, and a holy, special and peaceful every other moment of the year.

Rabbi Todd Chizner

TEMPLE NEWS

Avadim hayinu l’Pharaoh b’Mitzrayim. We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt. When I read these words my thoughts turn to the connection between our past slavery in Egypt and the current legal and political status of the Women of the Wall.

Women of the Wall is a courageous group of Jewish women who meet every Rosh Chodesh (New Moon) to pray at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, the Kotel. They have endured harassment and attacks and they continue to fight a difficult legal battle to ensure their right to pray together at this holy place. At this time, in the days leading up to Passover when we remember the desperation of our people in Egypt and their enslavement, we can understand their suffering and their battle for freedom.

TEMPLE NEWS

Message from the President

We just finished celebrating the joyous holiday of Purim, a holiday which commemorated the Jewish victory over the evil Haman. We celebrated with the reading of the Megillah, complete with groggers and merriment. We ate triangular-shaped cookies, symbolic of Haman’s hat and we dressed in costumes to masquerade in fun. In contrast to the almost frivolous atmosphere and decadent celebration of Purim, Passover brings with it an entirely different joy and celebration. While the exodus is one of the two most significant events in Jewish history its commemoration takes on a more sober significance as we retell the story of how we went from a people in bondage to a nation of free people who would soon receive the Torah.

Just as the ancient Hebrews came together to become a cohesive nation sharing common values and religious sensibilities, so too, our Temple consists of individuals who have come together to be part of our Temple family. Our history has taught us that when people join together and put the common good before personal needs, good things tend to happen. While you may not avail yourself of all that our Temple has to offer on a daily basis, your membership entitles you to be part of our family and community that is there for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Judaism is a religion that is designed for family and community, and our joys and sorrows are meant to be shared with others. With that in mind and with Passover just around the corner, I ask you to reflect on fulfilling our ancestors’ vision of what it means to be a Jewish community. As you sit at the seder this year with family and friends and re-tell the stories of our past, make certain that you are a role model for the younger generation. Make sure they know that we are all linked in the chain of Judaism by being connected to each other.

I wish you a meaningful and sweet Passover.

Steve Goldberg As you can see I cannot thank Steve Goodman enough and the Brotherhood enough for this generous gift of our beautiful new Tzedakah Box. As the Talmud tells us, giving charity before praying is a mitzvah and it is our hope that God will hear our prayers and grant our wishes. Please be generous with your contributions so that we can fulfill this most important mitzvah. May our congregation be blessed with prosperity, health and mazel. Steve Goldberg President

EDUCATION AND RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

On Sunday, March 3, the Temple will be having their annual Purim Carnival. It will be held during school hours, and I ask all of the children and their families to participate in this fun celebration in honor of Purim. Children and adults are encouraged to dress in costume and have a good time. There will be games, prizes and of course delicious hamentasch (nut free) for all to enjoy.

A few weeks later, we celebrate the holiday of Passover. This is a holiday where family and friends get together and share the “Seder Experience”. Your children will be learning the Four Questions, the story of the Exodus from Egypt, the ten plagues, the symbolism of the Seder, and many songs both in Hebrew and English. Tradition tells us that the Seder is really all about the children. It is a special opportunity to retell our past and pass down to the next generation our history as a people. It is so important for the children to play an integral part in the Seders. Let them ask the Four Questions, and tell you what they know about the Hebrews in Egypt and how they were freed and eventually received the Torah at Sinai. Make it fun for them by letting them hide the afikoman and receive a prize for returning it to the table. Get them special treats for after dinner which gives them something to look forward to as a reward for staying up and participating. In essence, include them in any way possible. You will certainly enjoy what you hear!

Your involvement with your children make the holidays come alive and have meaning that goes above and beyond their time spent in Religious School. Making it important to you makes it that much more so for them.

Wishing you a Sweet Passover,

Ellen Gastwirth

SISTERHOOD OF WRJ NEWS

Sisterhood of WRJ President’s Message

This month is the Centennial of our national organization, Women of Reform Judaism.

WRJ inspires us with this motto: Inspired by the past, committed to the future. This simple phrase perfectly describes our Sisterhood of Temple Judea and the sense of community it fosters.

TODAY IS OUR BIRTHDAY... HAPPY 100th TO US! From a small group of visionaries in 1913 to more than 65,000 women worldwide, WRJ has advocated for important social causes, advanced women’s spirituality, and supported the Reform Movement for the past 100 years.

I would like to share this poem from WRJ to commemorate this occasion.

We are young, we are older.

We are married, we are single.

We have differing interests, needs and lifestyles.

We are all welcome here, in a bond of sisterhood and caring,

For each other, for our temple, our community and our world

We laugh and cry together, worship and pray together.

We strengthen the bonds of Temple and foster our Jewish heritage together.

We make sacred the mundane, daily tasks of living.

We do it Jewishly, lovingly and we inspire the present and work for the future.

B’Shalom,

Susan Goldklang, President of WRJ

Holocaust Resource Center Update

To live is to be involved. All of us have jobs, projects and programs we must attend to. But every so often it is necessary to evaluate what we do, why we do it as if we are making a contribution.

I have been involved in the March of the Living for almost two decades. The program brings together thousands of Jewish students from all over the world for one week in Poland and one in Israel. For the two week period they are immersed in attempting to come to terms with the Jewish experience in the Holocaust and in the birth and existence of a Jewish State after 2,000 years of Diaspora. They are accompanied by Holocaust survivors, where together they experience the pains of persecution and pleasures of rebirth. Recently I have been asked: Is this an important program and why are so many involved?

March of the Living (MOL) gives me an opportunity to participate and contribute to the most critical mission in Jewish education in the 21st century. It is my deep desire to expose--and hopefully commit--Jewish 16 to 18-year-olds intellectually, physically, emotionally and spiritually to the Jewish past, Jewish present and the continued existence of Israel and the Jewish people regardless of what level of religious background they come from.

On a practical level, what do we do?

While still in their familiar and comfortable environment in New York, I, as a survivor and educator, give them a historical perspective of Jewish life in Europe in the 19th and 20th century, both globally and personally. I use this introduction to give them insight into the lives of their great-grandparents’ generation before and during the war. I hope that this gives them something to contemplate on the flight to Poland, the land that was once the home of more than 3.5 million Jews.

After an overnight flight, they arrive in the land of their great grandparents; in cities and towns with unpronounceable names and places where generations of Jews prospered and eventually were murdered. They see mounds of hair, tens of thousands of shoes, and prayer shawls once worn by Jews like themselves. They see ashes; the remains of hundreds of thousands of Jewish humans beings.

We stand together on the selection ramp in Auschwitz. A cattle car that carried the Jews to their death is parked on the rusty tracks. I tell them about my arrival in Auschwitz in May of 1944 at age 14. There I was greeted by menacing guards with machine guns and saw flames emanating from chimneys. The guards ordered me to get in line and leave all of my belongings behind. My grandfather was on my right, my brother on the left.

I describe my grandfather: his kindness and caring for others, his ability to fix anything that was broken. I tell them about my brother’s love of studying Talmud and playing the violin. I speak of my 10-year-old cousin Edith who held my grandfather’s hand. I attempt to transport the students to May 1944, so that they are standing with me on the selection ramp in Auschwitz. I want them to internalize my experience. In this way the Holocaust is no longer just a word in the dictionary or on the computer screen, it becomes part of the student’s emotional experience.

As we exit through the arch of the Auschwitz death camp, I ask each of the young people not to abandon the souls of the “k’doshim” that were murdered in the gas chambers in Auschwitz. I ask each student to take the souls of the victims with them to Jerusalem and to America.

Holocaust Resource Center Update (cont'd)

Days later, the plane lands at a modern airport in Israel. Air-conditioned buses transport the students to a place of contrasts; modern buildings butting against ancient structures. A place where they can touch the wall that King Solomon built 3,000 years ago. They walk on the stone-paved streets where ancient Rome once ruled, a place where Christianity was born. They experience this with a cell phone in hand; a device that also was born in this ancient land.

Leaving the crowded cities, they are treated to miles of green fields that a hundred years ago were malaria-infested swamps. The Zionist dream that they heard about in Hebrew school becomes a concrete reality.

As they travel to the north toward Lebanon and south to Gaza, meet and speak with Israeli soldiers their own age, they experience the hostile border; they become aware of the dangers that Jews like themselves face on a daily basis.

The ancient ruins, the modern skyscrapers, the throngs of Jews, Muslims and Christians filling the cities, the green orchards and fields all are part of the Jewish land, their land.

The success of MOL is that by the time the El-Al flight lifts off from Lod Airport, each student is transformed. They are men and women whose souls are tied to the Jewish past, the Jewish present and the future of the Jewish State and the Jewish people. Irving Roth, Director

Holocaust Resource Center

Each person who participated on these dates found the experience to be enriching and rewarding. They have left their personal mark on the Torah that is being written just for Temple Judea. We look forward to having you and your family be part of this wonderfully exciting project. The scribe is scheduled to visit us again on April 7th and April 8th. Please do not miss the chance to be amongst those that know the thrill of working with the scribe to have a letter written in the Torah at no cost to you. In addition, there are many donation opportunities for you to take advantage by which you can honor a family member, friend, mark an event or memorialize someone who is dear to you. Your generosity will help us to fulfill a dream, honor our beloved Rabbi Bergman z”l , and unite the members of Temple Judea in making memories which hopefully will last their lifetimes. We know that you understand the importance of this project and the lesson of the meaning of Tzeduakah that it is teaching to your children. This torah will be the legacy that your family and others who like you are donating to its writing, are leaving this temple. Sincerely,

Stuart Horowitz Chairperson

TEMPLE NEWS

Family Connection News We hope that you have been enjoying your winter so far. On Friday, December 14 Family Connection families joined Temple Judea families at the annual Chanukah dinner sponsored by WRJ. In addition to the delicious food, the children had fun with the holiday craft projects provided by Family Connection and Rabbi Chizner lead the candle lighting of our Giant Menorah.

We held Junior Shabbat Services, which focused on learning about the Torah, in December, January and February. By all accounts, the services have been a great success! Religious School students joined Rabbi Chizner and Cantor Sher on the Bima to recite prayers. Stacey Kelly also provided music for the services. Each Junior Service has been coupled with a Social Action tzedakah project wherein each family was asked to donate baby items and other necessities to support Mama's House, which provides help to young mothers. Be sure to join us on May 3 at our End of Year Junior Service, which will also be preceded by a Shabbat Dinner.

We celebrated Tu'B'Shevat on January 27 with food, tzedakah, crafts, singing and games. Donations were collected to plant trees in Israel through the Jewish National Fund in honor of our children. Rabbi Chizner and Cantor Sher told the children fun facts about the holiday that celebrates trees and led the group in special blessings. Thanks to all who participated in this great mitzvah!

Warm Reception for New Members Despite the Cold and Icy Night New members at Temple Judea were warmly welcomed despite the cold weather at our new member reception Friday night January 25th. Adults and children alike enjoyed wine, soda and nosh while meeting new friends, old friends and Temple Judea board members. Rabbi Chizner had to gently remind us that it was time for services as everyone was so busy chatting and noshing. At the service new member women jointly lead the candle lighting and new member men lead the Kiddish. Rabbi Chizner lead services that were inspirational working in the diverse subjects of Torah, trees and the welcoming of new members to the Temple Judea family, our very own tree branches. We all learned something and were left with much to think about. We certainly understand those members that could not come because of the icy roads they were missed. We look forward to seeing everyone at future services and events.

PROGRAM CANCELLATIONS When Roslyn Public Schools and Herricks Public Schools classes are cancelled due to inclement weather, Temple Judea of Manhasset Religious School will do the same. Announcements will also be posted on the Temple Judea website: www.temple-judea.com

In the event of cancellations of other programs for either weather related or other reasons, an e-mail will be sent to advise you. Please, if you have not supplied the office with your family’s e-mail addresses, please do so now.

Of course, you can contact the temple office at any time for additional information (516 621-8049).

SOCIAL ACTION NEWS LONG BEACH AND SANDY Through our involvement with TANS (Tikkun Alliance of the North Shore) quite a few members of our congregation have been able to volunteer in Long Beach. On one occasion, they sorted piles of clothing to be distributed. On another day, we arranged to deliver 11 baked zitis, four barbecued chickens and a car full of paper goods, shampoos and other needed supplies. More congregants delivered food on additional days and worked at the Martin Luther King Community Center on Christmas. What else can you do? FEGS has partnered with Nechama, the Jewish Response to Disaster, an organization that has received funding from UJA-Federation of NY to provide assistance to communities and households affected by Hurricane Sandy. Volunteers are still needed to muck out homes on the South Shore. You’ll receive training and protective gear at the worksite. If you are interested, please contact Debbie Weiss at [email protected]. Temple Judea is writing a Torah of our own! We are dedicating this great project to Rabbi Abner Bergman z”l. Rabbi Bergman was Temple Judea’s spiritual leader for 23 years. We celebrate his life, his gift of spiritual guidance of our Temple, and how he connected us all to our heritage, to one another, and to Torah learning.

In the fall of 2012, Temple Judea begins a year-long project called “A Torah of Our Own: Writing for the Future”. The very last mitzvah of our 613 commandments instructs each of us to personally write a Torah during his or her lifetime. Every letter in the Sefer Torah completes it and anyone who writes even one of the 301,805 letters, writes a Torah. So, this Torah, our Torah will be incomplete without everyone’s participation.

Temple Judea is offering every member the opportunity to hold the quill with the aid of a Sofer (scribe), so that each of us will be able to write a letter and personally dedicate this Torah to those we love and honor. This is a rare opportunity and privilege.

Writing a Torah strengthens our relationship to the Eternal and reinforces a lasting hope for the future. It is our obligation not to let it become a mere historical artifact, but to make it a living part of our community for today and the time to come. Our members will read from it. All future Bar/Bat Mitzvah students will proudly carry it and chant from it. And every time the Torah is taken out of the Ark we will feel that spiritual connection to our teacher, Rabbi Bergman.

This is your chance to perform a once-in– a lifetime mitzvah. Come be a part of Temple Judea’s “Torah of Our Own: Writing for the Future”.

Sign up today at the Temple office to write a letter on April 7th or April 8th.
