his year’s Tribute Dinner, Navigating Life’s Detours, willtake place on Thursday, October 13, 2011, at theMarquis Ballroom at the Fort Wayne Marriott.

This signature event offers our community an opportunity topause, treasure the lives of people who have been touched by can-cer, and pay tribute to them, whether a cancer survivor, caregiv-er, physician, or lost loved one. The evening includes a chance toshare memories with family and friends and enjoy a nice dinnerand entertainment.

We are pleased towelcome Regina Brett asthis year’s speaker.Regina is a columnist forThe Plain Dealer inCleveland, OH; authorof “God Never Blinks:50 Lessons for Life’sLittle Detours”; andbreast cancer survivor.Her book is an inspira-tional collection ofessays and stories aboutthe lessons life taughther along the detours oflife. She was named aPulitzer Prize finalisttwice in 2009 and 2008for columns she wrotefor The Plain Dealer.

The charity-driven Fort Wayne Derby Girls areonce again teaming up with Cancer Services ofNortheast Indiana to raise funds for services andsupplies for women with breast cancer in FortWayne. Last year, the event raised $10,000 forCancer Services, bringing the grand total for threeyears to $22,700.

For Bust a Move, local artists and women volun-teered their talents and their bodies to createunique, inspiring cast representations of the femalebust and the emotions associated with breast can-cer. Each cast will be painted and auctioned off forcharity at this event. Join us for this one-of-a-kindfundraising evening.

Last year at the Tribute Dinner, we introduced theWilliam A. Kunkel III Champion of Hope award, anhonor designed to recognize an individual whoembodies the mission of Cancer Services through his orher lifelong commitment to enhancing the quality of lifeof those affected by cancer in Northeast Indiana. Theboard of directors bestowed the first award on itsnamesake, William A. Kunkel III, who has served inmany volunteer roles, including board member since1959. The board will choose another recipient to behonored at this year’s event.

Richard Doermer BequestThe name Dick Doermer is familiar to many

people throughout Northeast Indiana. His businessacumen and generous community spirit made him aleader in our community. To those who knew himpersonally, he was a kind, wise and gentle man.

Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana and anumber of other organizations were fortunate toreceive a bequest from Mr. Doermer’s estate. Giftslike these are so valuable to the mission andfamilies served by Cancer Services. As his daughter,Kathy Callen said, “Dad gave so much of himself tothe community during his life. It seems fitting thathis giving spirit continues after his death.”

Eagles Auxiliary The Eagles Auxiliary 1906 of Columbia City hosted a St.Patrick’s Day fundraiser in our honor in March. Thankyou so much for your generous $600 donation.

Central Noble High School In April, Central Noble H.S.National Honor Societyorganized an Easter BasketRaffle to benefit CancerServices. Brandon Coats, astudent representative inNational Honor Societyproposed the idea of afundraiser to benefit a localcharity. NHS members andlocal businesses contributeditems to fill the 4 baskets.Raffle tickets were then sold

for $1 each. NHS members sold raffle tickets at schooland in the community and raised $570. Thank you! Wecould not do what we do without generous supporterslike you!

ENERGY TO SPARESusan Swardenski may be 71 yearsold, but she has the energy of a 25year old!

Susan became involvedwith Cancer Services ofNortheast Indiana whenher 47-year-old son wasdiagnosed with prostatecancer in 2009—thesame year CancerServices’ Tribute Dinnerfocused on prostatecancer. Susan walkedinto Cancer Services andsaid she wanted to helpand found herself on theTribute Dinner commit-tee. The rest, as theysay, is history.

From there, she became involved with the Tie1Onfor Prostate Cancer Seminar, Survivors DayCelebration and Lapper and started teaching Tai Chiat Cancer Services.

“It’s amazing what Cancer Services can do forsomeone dealing with a crisis,” says Susan. “And in asmall way, I can make a difference. I never feelunneeded when I volunteer with Cancer Services.”

Susan says that Cancer Services is a blessing to FortWayne; she just wishes more people knew about it.

“When I tell people everything is free, their eyesget wide,” says Susan. “They can’t believe they canget a hospital bed or counseling for free. Anythingyou need, Cancer Services can help you get. IfCancer Services doesn’t have it, someone there willhelp you get it.”

Her son has had a clean bill of health for twoyears now, but that doesn’t deter Susan’s involve-ment. On the contrary, it continues to increase! Ontop of the volunteer activities she was already a partof, Susan is the only woman on the prostate cancercommittee and though that is a source of someamusement to her and the committee, she says themen on the committee have been a source of supportand comfort to her.

Susan says one of the best things about CancerServices is you can see exactly where your fundrais-ing and volunteer hours are going—right back intothe community.

“Cancer Services is a great place for my energy,”says Susan.

COMPLEMENTARY CARE CONFERENCECancer Services was pleased to bring Naturopathic Physician Dr.Loch Chandler and Oncologist Dr. Stephen Chandler to FortWayne to discuss integrative medicine, including Chinese medi-cine, acupuncture, and diet, and the value of complementarymodalities to support healing and address the symptoms andside effects of the disease and treatment. The reaction andinterest from the local medical community was very positive.

CARING TOUCH MASSAGEIn June, Cancer Services hosted a three-day, NCBTMB-approved training program, “Caring for Clients withCancer: Simple Steps to Safe, Effective MassageTherapy.” Nationally-recognized trainer, Tracy Walton,MS, LMT, instructed 25 local massage therapists in thishands-on training. With the help of this event and theongoing commitment of 11 highly-qualified massagetherapists, Cancer Services was able to launch CaringTouch to provide 30-minute massage sessions forclients and their primary caregivers. This program,Complementary Care Conference and the massagetraining program, were made possible in part by fundingfrom an Inspire grant through Foellinger Foundation.

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DOThis letter was addressed to two staff members. It illus-trates why donors, volunteers and staff are so committedto helping local people with cancer.

But mostof all, I want to thank you for allowing me tohave a soft place to land when it was needed.You were both there late one afternoon when Istopped by to pick up something and I had anemotional breakdown.You both assured me thateverything would be OK… just what I needed atthe time. Thank you to everyone who supported,honored, and remembered loved oneswhile walking in the 2011 Lapper. Youmake a wonderful difference!

Over 500 participants attended our annualfundraising walk, Lapper, on Saturday, May21, 2011, at Foster Park and helped raiseover $55,000 for programs and services forpeople with cancer and their families in ourcommunity!

STATISTICS• 2,389 people with cancer and

their families found practical help and emotional support at Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana in 2010. New clients accounted for 37% of those families.

• 56% of Cancer Services clients in 2010 were under the age of 65 and 100 were children.

• Slightly more men than women were diagnosed with cancerin 2010, while women made up 59% of Cancer Services clients.

• Allen County clients make up 57% of those served, while 43% of families are from the surrounding counties.

• Volunteers provided 395 trips to radiation and chemotherapy treatment in 2010.

• Client advocates made 478 visits outside of the office to homes,treatment centers and hospitals.

• 535 families received a total of $112,172 to assist with cancer-related medical costs.
