Volume 67 JULY 2010 Issue 7 http://www.pointpleasantelks.org FLAG DAY Jersey Girl Line Dancers by, Joe Chickene On Sunday June 13th, after a couple of months planning we awoke to a potentially inclement day. But, guess what? It turned out to be a gorgeous day. I think the Good Lord never lets it rain on our parade. The Joint Based McGuire, Dix Lakehurst color guard who looked splendid in their immaculate whites, led off the ceremony. Ron Brooks lifted our spirits singing our National Anthem. Losing no time, ER Valerie Famous and her team of officers rendered an excellent rendition of the Flag Day Ritual. Highlighted in the ritual were Lecturing Knight, Cliff Van Nest with the “history of the Flag” and Ron Brooks with the “Response” portion of the ritual. Members of the Girl & Boy Scouts troops were impressive during the pres- entation of our historical flags. Nancy DeVito, Vet- eran’s Committee Chairperson led all in the Pledge of Alliance. Nancy DeVito and John Kaufman did the placing of the memorial wreath in Vet’s Park. The wreath was designed and made by Gus Adamo. Continued on Page 3, See Flag Day by, Nancy DeVito The Jersey Girl Line Dancers hosted a dance workshop at the lodge on Saturday May 22, 2010. Forty-Seven paid guests from as far away as Massa- chusetts, Connecticut and Arizona attended the event, featuring dance instructor Scott Blevin from Indiana. The dancing and lessons went from 2:00pm—11:00 pm. Our guests had such a good time that they are hoping we hold this event annu- ally. The day and evening was a huge success not only financially for the lodge but for our reputation in the dance world. The guests raved about our nice dance floor and the top notch buffet put on by Gus Schipani, Bob Kierstead, Bob Scott and Dave DeVito. They loved our Elks Hospitality and are looking forward to the next time. A big thank you first goes to Linda Alexandrou, Shirley Ferrier and Nancy DeVito for putting this into play and to Patty Rudy and Carol Hurley for helping decorate the room. EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE by Valerie Famous, ER Convention 2010……………a great time had by all!!!!

Wow, what celebration! The convention held in Wild-wood June 4-6 was outstanding. Kudos to Scot, Geor-giana, Linda, John, Bob S., Bob K., Victor, Gus, Peg, Cus, and everyone else that helped make this a most memorable weekend. The food cooked by our conven-tion committee was beyond YUMMY!! Thank you one and all!! It was so nice to kick back with you folks and get to know you outside the confines of our lodge and I can’t wait until next year when I can be a guest! Spe-cial note to Paul Brundage and Jack Walsh…… don’t stand close to edge boy’s you’re going in!! Thanks to our marchers and those of you who rode in the cars for the parade, we truly appreciate you bearing the heat and showing that Point’s membership support the lodge!

Flag Day – What can I say…….Joe you did a great job. Thanks to you and all the folks who made this day such a tremendous success. The weather was beautiful, the renditions of the service were outstanding and to look out into the crowd and see the membership, and Boys and Girls Scouts was a true blessing. I was hon-ored to call myself an ELK.

Membership – We still have some folks that haven’t paid their dues. Please I understand that our economy still hasn’t recovered but when you see all the great things your $70.00 will allow us to continue to do…it is money well spent. Please also remember that if you haven’t paid your dues we are obligated to inform you that you cannot enjoy membership me, the Officers and more importantly you, the Members!!!! benefits like our grill room, Friday Night Dinners and special events. Our bartenders have been instructed to check the membership cards so please – don’t be offended if they inform you that your dues are unpaid. Continued page 3

Flag Day, Continued from page 1, Mayor Vincent Barrella then gave a short but enjoyable speech, followed by an Elk National Service Award pre-sented by PDD Cus Dalik. PER Dino Castronova pre-sented his moving “Flag Day Toast”. Ron Brooks then ended the proceedings with “God Bless America” as only he can do it. ER Valerie thanked all attendees for coming and those volunteers who helped. We then en-joyed refreshments compliments of Bob Kierstead and his House Committee.

ER Message (cont.) You can pay them right on the spot by check, cash or credit card. Finance – Like any charitable organization trying to sur-vive in this economy we are struggling. But your team of Officers and Trustees and House are hard at work to try and initiate some cost saving measures and new ideas that will make weathering this economy a little easier. Our accountants our hard at work putting the finishing touches on our financial statements and a report will be forthcom-ing at our July meeting. We are wrapping up our first quarter (Elk year runs April – March 31) and this should give us a snapshot of where we should be focusing our efforts for the next few months.

Fluke – Tournament is almost upon us and we will need the help of all members to help make this event success-ful. We will need help preparing and serving food and on our beer trucks. Please remember that if you are serving alcohol you must be TAM certified. Feel free to see Ar-nie Van Duyn, John Veprek or Bob Kierstead if you are interested in helping.

Well folks, thank you so very much for making the first quarter of 2010-2011 a resounding success for

Jersey Girls, Continued from page 1, Also, a thank you for Mike Cohen for being our DJ. Thank you so much everyone for all your help.

ELK OF THE MONTH by Valerie Famous, ER Linda Muir

Linda Muir has been a member of our lodge for many years. Linda began running convention back when Cus Dalik was ER (Wow!… did they have electricity then?). Two years ago, Linda very happily turned the job of committee chair over to the Leading Knights so that they could see first-hand what a job it is to put a convention together. Let me tell you it ain’t easy! Linda has always been there to answer a question or lend a hand. Linda is currently on our house committee and fills in as secretary for that committee. Linda volunteers for all our ma-jor events and you will often find her with a huge smile and contagious laugh at Fluke and Oktoberfest.

Linda has two daughters, Heather and Erin and recently became a first-time grandmother to Dakota. Linda is also the proud mother of three pooches, Virgina, Bubba and Oscar!!

Please join me in congratulating Linda for all her efforts and for being our July Elk of the Month.
