Congratulations Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council—we were recognized by the Navy League National organization as an “Outstanding Council” for 2013. Way to go President Tim Katona and 2013 Board! We were one of fourteen Councils, out of 250, to receive this designation—the competition is tough.

Have you signed up for the Navy League Armed Forces Day Gala? There is still time—do not miss this exciting evening. We will be recognizing active duty in attendance; awarding the

2013 Trident Submarine Outstanding Performance Award (Olympic Bowl); and recognizing the Sea Cadet of the Year. VADM James “Frank” Caldwell, the Navy’s Inspector General, will be our guest speaker.

After you sign up for the Gala, you should look on the Bremerton Chamber website to see all the things that are going on for Armed Forces Day. Saturday, May 17th, is the big day—5K Fun Run; Pancake Breakfast; parade; BBQ following the parade; be sure to work in a nap; and the big day finishes up with the Navy League Gala.

I will keep making this comment—we need your help in recruiting new members! We are currently a 450 member council, which qualifies us as a medium sized council—this is the same number as last month. One of my goals for this year is to get us back to large council status (over 500 members)—to do that, all we need is for 15% of our membership to recruit one new member—how hard is that? 67 new members would get us to 517. Members come and go, so we need a little buffer on the number, but I think you get my message—we need support in recruiting new members!

May 17: Armed Forces Festival Navy League Gala ExtravaganzaAdmiral Theatre 6:00- 10:00 PM

Join us for the Annual Navy League Gala to honor our Military and recog-nize our community and political leaders. Each year, as the finale to Armed Forces celebrations in Bremerton, our Navy League Council honors the local military commands by hosting the only black tie event, aside from formal military balls, in the area. The Grand Marshall of the Armed Forces Day Parade is traditionally the guest of honor and this year, VADM James “Frank” Cald-well, the Navy’s Inspector General, will be our guest speaker.

Additionally, as part of the evening, our council presents a special, annual award to the Trident submarine crew who has achieved the top marks in battle efficien-cy. Competition is very competitive and this award is coveted among the boats homeported at Naval Base Kitsap. Our council started this trophy bowl many years ago and now a similar award is provided in Kings Bay, Georgia to a submarine that is homeported on the East Coast. The Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Navy League Gala is a sig-nificant social event of the year in Bremerton and each year we recognize very special people for their outstanding contributions

to our council and the military. Guests will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with one another prior to and following dinner and the program. Alejandro will perform Flamenco guitar after the official ceremony.Numerous business and community leaders join us for this recognition ceremony. You do not want to miss this year’s Gala at the Admiral Theatre and it could sell out early. Call the Admiral Theatre at 360-373-6810 to make your reservations, space is limited. Please RSVP by May 9. Tickets are $65 per person.

Navy League Northwest Regional Conference 11-12 April 2014Thank you to all who participated in the recent two day Navy League Northwest Regional Conference chaired by Pete Stiles, Northwest Regional President, at the brand new Tacoma Elks Lodge. Our National President, James Offutt highlighted the importance of the work done at the local council level to support the Navy League mission. He talked about the difference in the activities that are done at the national level and the local level. Offutt said that the real work occurs at the local level. It is here that we estab-lish relationships, we bring local leaders together, we really support our youth programs and we encourage local business and community leaders to learn more about the needs of the

sea services. We meet and greet the local military leaders and recognize their outstanding men and women. The real work of the Conference began when the participants had a chance to share what was working in their councils and learn from one another as they identified resources and strategies that might work in their own councils. For example Byron Faber shared how the Bremerton Council connects with USS Bremerton, homeported in Pearl Harbor. Our luncheon speaker was Rear Admiral Gromlich, Commander, USCG District 13. He spoke about the great relationship between the Coast Guard and the Region Councils. We were delighted that both President Offutt and RDML Gromlich were able to spend the day with us and were available for questions and comments.

Apr 10: Tour of Madigan Army Medical CenterWe met our tour guide, Ms. Hylie Jan Pressey, Madigan Customer Service Officer, outside the original Madigan Army Medical Center located one mile from the new Madigan Medical Center and started our tour. Mr. Troy Wilson, IT Technician & Mr. Courtney Lindsay, Simulation Technician met us for a hands on demonstration of the robotic simulators, equipment and technology in the Andersen Sim-ulation Center. They are in charge of teaching staff and other visiting personnel how to handle emergency situations in any of 17 medical specialties, from firing range injuries and IED injuries to kidney failure to assisting in birthing a child on a grocery store floor. Situa-tional software allows the robotic simulator to give students feedback, including breathing, pulse, blood pressure, airway obstruction, amount of medication in the bloodstream, neo-natal heartbeat, etc. The center

has robotic simulators for newborns, teens, adults, and both sexes - each having many software configurable situations. This training improves patient safety, practitioner efficiency and competency in the hospital as well as improving the care of all military personnel and their families. The center has trained over 29,000 medical personnel since opening in May, 2002.It was then time to head for the hospital supply area downstairs and watch some of the 23 famous robotic carts, which have replaced 35 full time personnel. These carts transport supplies, laundry, trash throughout the fa-cility in the space located between the floors or underground which keeps the hallways clear. This system was the first of its kind, but has been copied by other institutions. The carts run on a 4 hour charge, and if needed, will automatically locate a charging station, plug in and be ready to be on their way in 15 minutes. The robotic carts even have their own dedicated elevators. This completed the Madigan portion of the tour and it was then off to Patriot’s Landing, one of our affiliate members, where Karen Getchell had arranged a luncheon for our group. After lunch we were treated to a tour of their fine facilities, including a sample apartment and a representative 2 bedroom cottage. They currently have over 200, 55 or older residents and a vigorous program of activities for their residents. You don’t have to be ex-military or spouse to live there, but about 90 % are.
