Yippee! Those Hollywood Success Stars are at it again! The Service Learning
Team at Hollywood Success Academy saw and addressed a need in the community, all
while covering content area lessons. While learning about the skeletal and muscular
systems of the body, students decided to create a chair exercise video for the residents
of Ashton Place Rehabilitation and Care Center. The students were familiar with the
idea of chair exercises because of their interaction with the residents during their
activity time. They saw the need for a more structured workout. Additionally, while in
class, the students learned about the mental and physical benefits of routine exercise,
which is where the idea manifested. Why not create an exercise video that is consistent
and practical for the residents? After research, the idea took off! Students designed a
logo and t-shirts, secured a wheelchair and walker to simulate the exercises for the
residents, and developed a manual. The Sit and Get Fit video and manual was
produced and presented to the activity director at Ashton Place Rehabilitation and Care
Center, Gwen Talley. Moreover, the Sit and Get Fit project was used as an artifact for
the Memphis City School District-Wide ThinkShow! Hats off to the Hollywood
Success Service Learning Stars.

Northwest Prep Academy
Student Council 2010- 2011
In the midst of all of the excitement at Northwest Prep Academy (NWPA) December
graduates’ preparation for exiting school, NWPA' s Student Council was preparing for
its third annual election process. Candidates for student council were required to
complete an application, collect three recommendations from a combination of
teachers and/or administrators, campaign, present speeches on why they should be
chosen, and vote. Included in the process were nominees for Mr. and Ms. NWPA.
Official Campaign Week (November 15- 19, 2010) was clean and fun. Several of the
candidates worked together to create their campaign material. Students campaigned
with posters, flyers, treats, and promises. Each candidate gave a two-minute speech
during afternoon announcements. In the past, the student council opted to use election
machines to allow our future citizens to experience the true voting process. However,
NWPA is now quickly growing into a school of choice and enrollment is high. In order
to maintain an efficient and orderly election, the council reverted to the old paper and
pencil ballot method during their homeroom block. Winners for this year’s elections
are as follows: President – Kristopher Davis, Vice- President – Alicia Mathews,
Sergeant at Arms- Jalen Newson, Secretary- Latisha Catron, Mr. NWPA- Willie
Brown, and Ms. NWPA -Betty Johnson.
The first project for the newly elected council has been a toy drive. Students have been
collecting toys and $1 donations toward toys to be wrapped and distributed. The
recipients this year will be the students of NWPA who have children of their own.
Previous toy drive recipients have been two elementary schools: Hollywood Success
and Westhaven Alternative.
The Student Council will hold their annual Mr. and Ms. NWPA Coronation at the
beginning of the spring semester. Future activities include: a faculty/student basketball
game, Valentine's Day Balloon-a-grams, dances, and an Earth Day Celebration.

The Memphis City Schools Prep Academies Fall 2010 Graduation Ceremony was held on December 17, 2010, 6 p.m., at the Cannon Center, 255 North Main Street. Two-Hundred Fifty Two students received their high school diplomas during the graduation.
The MCS Prep Academies are specialized schools that offer an accelerated innovative, rich and engaging program of study specific to the academic and social needs of individual students. These schools are unique in the fact that they offer students:

Extended Day/Extended Year
Accelerated Credit Accumulation
Integration of Careers and Technology
Service Learning
Internships/Externship
Many MCS Prep graduates have post-secondary options, and 54 have been offered full scholarships to four year colleges and universities.

Division of Innovative and Charter SchoolsJoins the Race for a Cure
On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Division of Innovative and Charter Schools joined the 2010 Race for a Cure at The Shops of Saddle Creek in Germantown Tn. Sponsored by the Memphis Mid-South Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the local association contributes funds to provide services including free mammograms, clinical breast exams and breast self-exam information to women in Memphis and surrounding counties.
Founded in 1982 upon a sister’s promise, The Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, ensure quality care for all women, and energize research efforts to find a cure for breast cancer. It is also the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. Today, there are more than two million breast cancer survivors alive in the United States. That’s because breast cancer is found earlier due to increased awareness, greater use of screening tests and better treatment options due to programs like Komen for the Cure.
This was the division’s second year of participation in the Race for a Cure 5k event. The division formalized a team called “Team Innovators”. A total of 42 teams joined under the category of public schools. Team Innovators was one of 37 which received pledges towards the fundraising goal. Fundraising efforts through pledges assisted with raising a record amount of $476,531.00, which was above the local fundraising goal of $350,000.00. Thanks to Faye Tolbert, Project Specialist at our divisional office, for serving as this year’s Team Captain.Thanks to all staff, students, parents who supported the division in this community service cause.

A Breast Cancer Survivor’s Story
My name is Frances Coleman. I was diagnosed with breast cancer about 18 years ago. I obeyed my doctors and had the surgery to remove my breast. At that time I was scared and breast cancer was not in the public eye like it is now, but I was hopeful. The surgery was done and I recovered very well. I had one treatment of radiation and treatment of chemotherapy and that was it!
God healed my body, I went back to the doctor for a check- up, and received a clean bill of health. If detected early, you too can live as a breast cancer survivor. So women, make sure you get your annual mammogram!!!!

Former Students Awarded at National Summit
Former MLK scholars Mare'le Johnson, Timothy White, and Tyran Pryor were awarded certificates of appreciation by Dr. Felicia Watson of New York City for their participation as student ambassadors at the 2010 Memphis City Schools Career and Technology Fair. This event was held during the 2009-2010 school year while the young men were scholars at MLK Academy. Students provided assistance to presenters and received valuable experience about volunteerism and communication. The event was planned by Dr. Watson in collaboration with Memphis City Schools Career and Technology Department and the National African American School Board Members Association. Ms. Willie Slate, Director of MCS Careers and Technology was so impressed with Tyran Pryor's ACT score of 23 that she invited him back that evening to the superintendent's reception for recognition. It should also be noted that all three students are currently doing well in a traditional school. Mare'le Johnson is a senior at Southeast Prep Academy, Timothy White is a senior at Frayser High School, and Tyran Pryor is a freshmen at Tennessee State University!

Students at MLK once again demonstrated knowledge and creativity through authentic assessment at this years annual Fall Think Show! The theme was From the Depression to the Recession . The exhibits were as follows: A life-size Kool Aid Man with information explaining that Kool Aid was invented during the Depression as the "poor man's drink." Also, Pluto was represented. The significance of Pluto was that it was discovered as a planet during the Great Depression and became a dwarf star during the most recent recession. A life-size Monopoly board was created with Memphis twist - Memphopoly. Monopoly was invented during the Great Depression as a form of cheap entertainment for families. It also provided a way to put a little money in their hands. Memphopolyconsisted of game pieces such as a BBQ Grill, MATA Bus, Pyramid, and Guitar. A roll of the giant dice might land you on Chelsea Avenue, Jackson Avenue, Union Avenue, or you might have to pay money if you land on MLGW, Go to Jury, or Mo' Money Taxes. A replica of the Loraine Motel was created by MLK's senior scholars. This is significant because the Civil Rights Movement received a significant start during the Great Depression and our nation elected it's first African American president during the most recent recession. Last but not least, the junior scholars developed a stock market game and created a very impressive power point explaining the details of what they learned. Many district administrators and community members visited the exhibition and proclaimed it one of the best they had seen! Great job MLK scholars!

Counselor Presents in Florida
Dr. Jeffrey Taylor, Professional School Counselor at MLK Academy, presented information about increasing the number of African American students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses to educators from throughout the nation at a small conference in Hutchinson Island Florida in early November. Co presenters were Dr. Joy Mordica, from the North Carolina Department of Education and Dr. Earnest White, from the National African American School Board Members Association. The conference was for the Association for Advanced Educational Research. Of particular interest, Dr. White is one of the NAASBMA members who works in collaboration with Willie Slate to bring the Career and Technology Expo to Memphis each February.
Boyz II Men- December 2010
MLK Academy celebrated their 5th Boyz II Men ceremony since it's creation in 2008. Young men who were initiated into the program must demonstrate pride, valor, knowledge, and truth. Students must be in good standing academically and in terms of conduct. The speaker for this event was Memphis City School Board Commissioner Rev. Kenneth Whalum. This Boyz II Men proved to have the largest turn out of all previous ceremonies. Dignitaries from Memphis City Schools and local government offices, including local businessmen and women attended this event. The West Tennessee Chorus provided entertainment. Mr. Ron Davis was presented a plaque for his years of commitment in organizing this event.

MLK Students Present at School Board Meeting
MLK Scholars Brandon Williams, Terreon Peppers, Quadarius Smith, Devin Alexander, and Kadarius Williams presented to the Memphis City Schools Board of Education during the regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, November 22, 2010. The students dressed out in white shirts and black ties and demonstrated how a school like MLK Academy has impacted their lives in a positive way. Each student was given the opportunity to tell the Board of Commissioners why they liked attending MLK Academy. The reasons given consisted of small class sizes, safety, individual instructional opportunities from teachers, having teachers who care, and overall success. Terreon Peppers showed all in attendance what students can do at MLK Academy when he announced that he earned a 25 on his ACT! Additionally, English teacher Casie Jones and professional school counselor Dr. Jeffrey Taylor provided a sound off in support of NMS (not meeting standards). Finally, Mr. Clarence Daniel, principal at MLK Academy, read a story about a little boy who had little guidance and who could have very easily became a menace to society, but because of teachers and principals who cared became very successful...as the principal of MLK Academy! There was hardly a dry eye in the house.
The commissioners were so impressed with the presentation that Commissioner Patrice Robinson purchased each of the young men in attendance a copy of Rev. Kenneth Whalum's new book Hip Hop Is Not Your Enemy. Thank you Commissioner Robinson for the books and thank you Dr. Cash for giving us the opportunity to show the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County that we have it going on at MLK Academy!

Adolescent Parenting Program Partners with LeBonheur
Children’s Hospital for Service Learning
This year, The Adolescent Parenting Program has partnered with LeBonheur Children’s Hospital for service learning. Our school adopted a floor at the hospital. Once a month, a rotating group of girls visit the hospital to read, communicate, play games, and create arts and crafts with the patients on the adopted floor. Upon returning to school, the girls have a discussion with our service learning coordinators, Mrs. Mia Hill and Ms. Carolyn Smith, regarding the visit. A component of this reflection session is a typed summary of the student’s visitation experience.
Before the initial visit to LeBonheur, the students participated in an orientation with the volunteer services coordinator of the hospital. The purpose of the orientation was to discuss Hippa laws, appropriate behavior and expectations of the student volunteers.
As a culminating project, the students will create a portfolio and present it during our weekly student enrichment period. It is hoped that our students’ literacy skills, social skills, and intrinsic motivation to help others will all be impacted by this service learning opportunity.
