TheMountainState Greenletter West Virginia Golf Course Superintendents Association Volume 7, Issue 4 April, 2015 President’s Message Happy Spring! Well it looks like we are going to have a lot of flowers in May! April is bringing more showers than most of us would like. Oh well, nothing most of us haven’t seen before. If anything positive can come out of excessive rain it would be the deep green grass that most are experiencing right now. Having time to mow it and keep it mowed without damaging the wet areas might be difficult, but it sure looks good! Speaking of time, please set aside enough to join us at the next WVGCSA golf meeting. The benefits of these events is only as good as the ones attending them. Our vendors are not the only ones benefitting by meeting customers but the Superintendents get the most benefit in multiple ways. The Superintendent has the ability to discuss issues with other Superin- tendents, some in the same situation and some who have ran across that specific situation. The Superintendent can also discuss products, problems, and solutions with our vendors as well. The last benefit is getting to eat a great meal and play one of the great golf courses our state has to offer. Have a great Spring and I hope to see you soon! GCSAA Launches Marketing Campaign

GCSAA is launching an exciting new outreach campaign, hoping to stir golfer apprecia-tion for the great work of our members. By utilizing TV, radio, print, and internet media, GCSAA’s new “thank a superintendent” campaign aims at reaching the 25 million golfers who enjoy the fruits of our superintendents’ labors.

The television spots (15 and 30 seconds long, respectively) are headlined by the Golden Bear, Mr. Jack Nicklaus, and feature other marquee names like Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowl-er, Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar, Michelle Wie, and Nick Faldo. These big-name golfers have big-time influence, and GCSAA is using their testimonies to show the golf world why superintendents are a key component of the game’s success and enjoyment. These ads will run on the golf channel throughout 2015 and you can check them out at http://www.gcsaa.org/thankasuperintendent.

The radio ads, similar to the TV ads, also feature Nicklaus and other brand-name golfers and will air on Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio (Sirius 208, XM 93) as well as local golf radio shows throughout the nation. Both TV and radio ads can be co-branded by GCSAA chap-ters and aired in their local markets. The radio spots can be heard on the same link provid-ed above.

By tracking internet traffic on golf-related websites, these ads will take advantage of dy-namic internet marketing to pinpoint golfers’ web browsers and lure them in with a chance to win a trip to the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. When golfers view the ad, they are prompted to fill out a “thank your superintendent” form for their chance to win the trip to the PGA Championship. On the back end, GCSAA will then send that thank you note to the golfer’s superintendent and the superintendent’s employer. Pretty cool.

The project is spear-headed by two new faces to the GCSAA team – Associate Director of marketing Russell Sypowicz, and Director of communications and media, Craig Smith. Both bring great experience to the GCSAA team, and look to continue making headway in future outreach and marketing initiatives.

In other news, Jenny Pagel-Guile is the new face of the GCSAA Certification Program, re-placing recently retired Penny Mitchell. Jenny is working to help further develop and grow the CGCS program, and wants to hear member feedback in order to provide more directed services. 2014 saw 22 newly certified members, and 8 members have started the process in 2015. Please feel free to reach out to her directly for questions regarding the application process or eligibility at [email protected].

Is That You, Spring?APRIL 17, 2015By Elliott L. Dowling, agronomist, Northeast Region

While most of the northern portion of the Northeast Region continues to struggle with winter injury, golf courses in the southern states are preparing for the upcoming season. Winter injury has been of little concern in Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware and Virginia.

If you have read any of the 2015 Northeast Regional Updates, you have undoubtedly read that winter injury is significant throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, New England and Canada. Time will tell the full extent of winter damage. Know that if your golf course experienced damage, it is critical to manage traffic and promote turf health dur-ing spring and early summer to avoid delaying recovery. For additional information, refer to Adam Moeller’s video update dealing with winter injury recovery.

Many courses are finished, or soon will be finished, with aeration. Aeration promotes early spring rooting that pays dividends throughout the summer. Shattering zones of compaction with core and/or deep-tine aeration provides increased pore space for root growth. Timing spring aeration is difficult and differs from one course to another.

Throughout the traditional mid-Atlantic region, the timing is right to apply preemergence herbicides for crabgrass and broadleaf weed control. If you have not applied preemergence herbicides, it is recommended you do so as soon as possible. Proper timing for applying preemergence herbicides depends on soil temperature. Soils need to be 55 degrees Fahr-enheit for 24 to 48 hours for crabgrass to germinate. Many preemergence controls must be in the soil and activated by irrigation or rainfall before crabgrass germination for optimal control. Applying preemergence herbicides one or two weeks early will not negatively af-fect weed control – as soil temperatures rise, the preemergence products will become ac-tive in the soil.

Lastly, annual bluegrass weevils (ABW) soon will begin to leave their overwintering sites and move toward playing surfaces. Research suggests that panicking and applying controls at the first sight of ABW may accelerate the onset of chemical resistance. Rather, use natu-ral indicators – such as forsythia bloom – and scouting to determine when to apply ABW controls. Controlling the first generation adults and larvae is the goal for season-long suc-cess; to do this wait until adult ABW populations peak before making a control application.
