What is Cinco de Mayo?

By: Emma Henze

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday celebrated in May to celebrate the 5th of May. The date May 5th is symbolized to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire over the Battle of Puebla. Some cities have Cinco de Mayo festivals also. People celebrate Cinco de Mayo over music, dancing, and making some special food also. Maybe this year you could celebrate Cinco de Mayo as well! 5 facts about Cinco de Mayo!

1. Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for May 5th. 2. Mexican president Benito Juárez made the holiday. 3. President Franklin Roosevelt helped bring the holiday to the U.S. 4. Cinco de Mayo was first recognized as a national holiday in the U.S in 2005. 5. May 5th is also the anniversary of when NASA launched the first American manned space flight in 1961. Mother’s Day Wishes By, Phoenix Bridegroom

What are you getting for

your mother for Mother’s Day? You should think of something special. You could get her flowers, chocolates, or homemade gift. Mother’s Day is where you get to celebrate mothers all around the world and to thank them for their hard work. Mothers play a big part of our lives. For example they cook, clean, and do their daily jobs in just one day. Mothers give us support and loving care. Mothers help us with our homework, kiss our scars, and give us endless love. Even though mothers may give us a hard time that doesn’t mean that they don’t love us any less. When they do stuff for example of tucking you into bed, or cooking you a special meal. Mothers always know what to say and do. So do you know what you’re getting your mother for Mother’s Day? No matter what you decide to get her, be sure to give her as much love and maybe even a little more this day, as I bet she would really love that and lots of hugs too.

What is Earth Day and is Earth Day even a Holiday? By: Mady Novak

I was skeptical if Earth Day was holiday or not. So today I wanted to focus on Earth Day’s importance! Earth day is a day to demonstrate protection to our wonderful planet! Earth Day is not a federal holiday.

Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day in 1970, His idea spread and now is something we all love to celebrate for are beautiful planet! Earth

day is celebrated by millions of people internationally. Some ways you could celebrate earth day is by turning off the tv, unplugging electronics,

turn off the Wi-Fi router, plant a garden, reduce, reuse and recycle. Make sure to celebrate Earth Day every year on April 22!

(This article was submitted a little late for

last month, but I thought it was still

important to add, as we should always try

to take care of our “Mother Earth”)

Want to learn something new each day? Then, why not try to find one

interesting fact to share with someone each day. I bet you might find out some

really cool things that have happened all over the world, and even from long ago.

What can you find out? It’s good to try to learn one fun new fact each day to help

expand your knowledge, as you never know what you will find until you try. I’ve

learned some really fun facts from 6th grader, Mason Butler each day we each share

at least 1 new fact that we have learned.

I would love to learn something new from you. If you find something

interesting, I would love to share it with others. Here are just a few tidbits that he

has stumbled upon from various books and sites on the internet:

In one day, a full grown oak tree expels 7 tons of water through its

leaves.

Congratulations to Our Vex IQ Robotics team 91362.

Our Vex IQ Robotics Team 91362 had qualified and competed in the World

Robotics Championship. Our team qualified for the finals, and then placed in

the 9th place alliance in their division that consisted of over 80 teams. There

were 5 divisions total at this competition and each division had 20 teams make

the finals, so that means that they were one of the top 100 teams in the entire

world. These boys did an incredible job representing Westchester and all of the

Duneland School Corporation.

Congratulations to you all. This is an amazing accomplishment, and

so many fun memories that I bet you made together. I wish you all continued

luck in robotics throughout your lives. Thank you WIS coaches for all of your

guidance for all of our robotics teams.

Happy birthday to not only our May

birthday people, but also to all of you

that have a birthday in June, July & in

August. We hope you have a wonderful

day, and hope that your birthday wish

comes true.

Be on the lookout for more information from your 5th or 6th grade student with regards to upcoming events. As this school year is rapidly coming to an end there will be many activities going on.

Happy early Father’s Day to all of our WIS dads.

Okay, so Father’s Day isn’t until June 16th, 2019, but I wanted to make

sure that all of our WIS dads were being thought of as well as all of our WIS

moms. With Father’s Day being in June, most of the time their special holiday

Is often not mentioned in our May edition. (With May being our last month each

year for our paper.)

Father's Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910

by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. This special day was brought

to the U.S. in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating

fathers, fathering, and fatherhood.

I hope you all do something special for you dad on his special day. Most

of all let him know how much you care about him and I hope you all build many

fun memories on this day together.

I wanted to put a special thank you out to not only my

Knights of WestCHESSter, but also to the following WIS staff members

that took part in our first Knight to Remember Tournament here at

WIS. Thank you to Mr. Napier, Mr. Burke, Mrs. Masi, Mr. Morley (my

parent volunteer.), Officer Joe, and Mrs. Chavez. Congratulations to all

teams, you all played very well and should be so very proud of all that

you have done. I look forward to seeing all those wishing to join in

playing this wonderful game next year. For our 6th graders, I hope that

you are able to continue playing chess at CMS. Be on the lookout early

next year for our meeting dates, and for a new t-shirt design to wear

for next year. Thank you for the many fond memories that you all

have given me this year. Remember that you all are amazing with

your own unique talents. Hopefully next year we can get more staff

members involved in our Knight to Remember Tournament.

NORA NIGHT

On Wednesday, May 1st, five of our 6th grade English Arts

classrooms had the opportunity to participate in our first Nora Night.

For the past several months, these classrooms have been paired with

other students who have a special needs impairment. Our students

learned empathy through getting to see the many similarities that exist

between all the children in this grouping of student participants. Our WIS

students had made wonderful heartfelt documentaries about their Nora

Friend throughout this whole process in which they were with. These

documentaries were then edited into one video/ audio presentation

which then shown to a group of about 100 people attending the Nora Night

event. It was such a treasure to see that many new friends were made

during this whole process! It was such a treat to see all of the different

personalities of all of these children coming together throughout this

whole process.

We would like to thank all that not only participated in this new

magical event, but also to the many people who helped out behind the

scenes that helped to make this project such a special and memorable

event.

Important Information:

All students must turn in their iPads, cases,

and chargers on the following dates:

May 20th- Students turn in iPads and chargers

May 23rd- Students turn in iPads and chargers if absent 5/20

Thank you to all

By, Mrs. Michael

I just wanted to thank everyone on the News Crew for all of your

delicious recipes, news articles, interviews, current events, book and movie

reviews, and other fun news you shared with everyone over this school year.

Thank you to all of our getting to know you staff members that helped to let

everyone get to know you just a little bit more. A big thank you goes out to

Mr. Longacre and our WIS staff that has helped provide other information, or

given advice. Without your help, we would not have had the quality monthly

Newspaper that has been packed with a little bit of everything each month that

our readers have enjoyed. Thank you to all of you for making our news fun and

interesting!

Please be on the lookout early next school year for information about

being a part of the WIS News Crew for next year. If there is anything that anyone

would like to see added to our WIS News each month, please let me know. I

would love to be able to add new items, and always encourage suggestions.

Most of all, thank you all for taking the time to read the articles our

News Crew has brought to you. It has been my pleasure working with these

students this year. I would like to send a thank you and good luck wishes in 7th

grade to my 6th grade News crew (Phoenix Bridegroom, Ava Bartkus, Amelia

Adams, and Mason Butler).

Smiles,

Mrs. Michael
