BRIDGE PRE -K
What’s happening…
Room 105 has been working incredibly hard creating sculptures out of many new materials.
The children have explored foil, wire, and wooden blocks. They are also working on writing
and illustrating incredible stories! We can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
After a lengthy study of animals, Room 109 has been exploring the fine art of hair design. Both
AM and PM groups have turned the dramatic play areas into a busy salon (without actual hair
cutting)! It will be exciting to see how this project develops over the next few weeks.
Spaceships have launched incredible ideas and creations in Room 111. The children have
made constellations, the “Milky Way”, and even their own space ships. They are wrapping up
this amazing study and beginning to develop new ideas for their next study.
Our supplies are getting low! If you would like to donate supplies to the Pre-K class-
rooms, we would greatly appreciate donations of…
Baby wipes
Disinfecting wipes
Paper towels

Storybus is coming to Bridge!
Our Kindergarten teacher team has been at-tending Kohl McCormick Sto-rybus Workshops to bring learning back to the class-room. All this hard work has already benefitted our stu-dents! The theme for the Sto-rybus is The Three Little Pigs. We have been reading various versions of the story in the classroom and focus-ing on developing literacy skills. Students have enjoyed various learning activities, such as acting out the story, building scenes from the sto-ry and discussing concepts, such as character, setting, plot, and beginning, middle and end of stories.
To bring the theme to a close, the Storybus will be visiting our school in the Spring for an in-school field trip! This is an actual bus filled with extended learning activities related to The Three Little Pigs.
KindergartenKindergartenKindergarten NewsNewsNews
Our Kindergarten teacher team has been attending Erikson Institute’s Early Math workshops. Students are already reaping the benefits through the inter-active, hands-on approach to learning math skills that works alongside our cur-rent math curriculum. Just ask your child about, “Counting Creatures”, “The Three Museum”, and “Mouse Count”, which cov-er the math concepts of Al-gebraic Thinking, and Numbers and Operation. We will also be covering Measurement, Data Analy-sis, and Geometry and Spatial Relations.

“The Life and Times of Junie B.”
First and Second Grade News
The first grade classrooms have been reading books from the Junie B. Jones series. The students loved
to hear about Junie B.‘s many adventures. When we found out that the Junie B. play ―The Life and
Times of Junie B.‖ was coming to Chicago we thought it would be fun to go see it. We went to the
Copernicus Theater on a field trip and were able to see what Junie B.‘s life was really like. We were
also able to take part in the play as Junie B. sang, danced and laughed with her friends.
Happy 100th Day of School!
We‘ve had 100 amazing days of school! On February 25th, first and second grade students celebrated
the 100th day of school by dressing up as 100 year-old grandmas and grandpas. Students participated
in various activities such as making ―100th Day of School‖ posters, crowns, and reading stories about
the 100th day of school. Everyone enjoyed this fun-filled day!
―This show was amazing. I loved it so much.‖ -Victoria C. (202)
―I went to a theater and I can‘t tell you how great it was.‖
-Adam P. (206)
―I liked when Herb shared his paper with Junie B. because she
was on her last piece of paper in her book of adventures. That
was really nice of him.‖ -Kamil M. (203)
―The show was very funny and it made me laugh. It was a very
good show.‖ -Nicole C. (206)
―I liked when Herbert complimented Junie B.‘s glasses so that
May would not make fun of her. That was very nice of Herbert.‖
-Mason W. (202)
―I liked the part when Junie B. was dancing with her friends be-
cause they were all good dancers.‖ -Franky S. (203)
The Pig Robbers by Denys C.
Once upon a time there were five pigs. One day a pig
said, ―Let‘s be robbers!‖ Then another pig said, ―We
can be rich and buy whatever we want!‖ ―Let‘s make
costumes,‖ said another. When the pigs were done,
they went to rob the bank. They started robbing the
bank and the alarm turned on. Then the police came
and one pig shouted, ―Leave us alone!‖ The police
didn‘t believe their eyes. Talking pigs were robbing a
bank! ―You five are going to pig jail,‖ the police
In Room 208 we have been very busy learning about the life cycles of
frogs. While reading the story ―Where Do Frogs Come From?‖ the
class was very excited when we received our two class pets, bullfrog
tadpoles. The students brainstormed names for the tadpoles and then
voted on which two names they liked the best. Kane and Jordan are the
names that were elected. We have watched our tadpoles grow up as
they now have back legs and are beginning to lose their tails. We are
still waiting for the front legs to grow. We can‘t wait for Kane and Jor-
dan to turn into frogs!
Learning about Life Cycles
Fantasy Stories
Students in Room 204 are learning about different genres of literature. This month, we are reading
fantasy stories. These stories are about events that can not happen in real life. We read stories ―The
Day Jimmy‘s Boa Ate the Wash‖ and ―How I Spent My Summer Vacation‖. Students also wrote and
The Dancing Giraffe
by Carolina A. and Wiktoria W.
There once was a giraffe that couldn‘t dance so
it went to take dancing lessons. The giraffe was
good at the dancing lessons, so it went to dance
in a dance show and won. Then it became a fa-
mous dancer.
Third and Fourth Grade News MAKING FOSSILS ROOM 209
The third grade students have been studying rocks and miner-
als. As a hands-on activity they made two different kinds of
fossils. Each student brought in some salt dough. They made a
disc out of the dough. Then, they put a thin layer of Vaseline on
the back of a seashell. Next, they pressed the seashell into the
dough. When they took the shell out it left an imprint. They
filled the imprint with liquid glue. When the glue dried, they
peeled it off and Presto! They had a mold and a cast fossil.
Everyone had a great time.
Fifth and Sixth Grade News Ancient Egypt
The 6th graders are currently studying ancient Egypt in history class. So far, we have learned about 4 of
Egypt’s greatest pharaohs and their most important achievements. We have learned about Khufu and the building
of the Great Pyramid at Giza, Senusret I and his White Chapel in Karnak, Hatshepsut and her temple carved out
of the side of a cliff in Dayr al-Bahri, and finally Ramses II and his Great Temple in Abu Simbel. The students
took an imaginary trip down the Nile River to visit these 4 monuments, and then wrote letters to a friend or a rel-
ative describing their trip to Egypt and all of the interesting things they learned about its pharaohs and sites. If
you see our letters posted in the hallway, please take the time to read a few! We hope you enjoy reading them as
much as we enjoyed writing them!
Library News A few months ago, the Bridge family lost one of its most loving members – Ms. Lora Niewinski. Ms. Niewinski was very in-
volved in organizing our book fairs and was committed to connecting kids with the books which they wanted to read. In her loving
memory, the Scholastic Book Fairs has donated three books to the Bridge Library: ―Heart to Heart‖ by Lurlene McDaniel, ―A Season of
Gifts‖ by Richard Peck, and ―Chester Raccoon and the Acorn Full of Memories‖ by Audrey Penn. All three books deal with loss and
ways of coping. ―Heart to Heart‖ and ―A Season of Gifts‖ can be found in our Jr. High Library, while ―Chester Raccoon and the Acorn
Full of Memories‖ is located in our Elementary Library. Ms. Niewinski will look down and smile knowing she is still making a differ-
ence.
Throughout all of February, third and fourth graders have been studying a traditional form of Japanese poetry – Haiku. Haiku
poems consist of 3 lines. The syllable pattern of a Haiku is 5, 7, 5. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line
has 7 syllables. Since the Haiku poet only has 3 lines to work with, Haiku poems are usually written about one simple thing. An animal,
a season of the year, a raindrop or a snowflake are all examples of Haiku topics. Third and fourth graders have been writing Haikus, and

Bruno’s Kitchen See Green
Are you ready for a new green drink? Then try this: Gently break 2 small lime frozen-fruit bars off their sticks.
Ask an adult to peel 2 kiwis. Place the lime bar, kiwi fruit and 1 cup vanilla yogurt into a blender. Ask an adult
to help you blend the mixture until smooth. Top with whipped cream and colored sugar. I got this recipe from
my favorite magazine.

St. Patrick‘s Day Cupcakes:
Ingredients:
175 gm Self-Raising flour
150 gm Butter (softened)
150 gm Superfine (castor) sugar
1 tsp. Vanilla extract
3 eggs
How to make the Vanilla Cupcakes:
Preheat oven to 350*F.
Line a 12 cup cake pan, with cup-
cake papers or non-stick cook-
ing spray.
Break eggs into a cup and beat
lightly using a fork.
Now, put all the ingredients in a
bowl and beat with an electric
mixer for 2 minutes.
Divide the mixture equally among
the cake cases.
Bake for 18-20 mins. Until the
cakes are properly cooked.
Leave to cool fully before icing.
How To Make Green Frosting:
For green frosting just buy white frost-

mixing to make it darker. If you
want a light green don‘t mix too
long! You may also add green

More sports!….Bridge Soccer Team
Tips For Try-outs:
First of all, don‘t be afraid to show the coach your
skills!
Be determined. Pretend the ball is your target, the goal
you‘re aiming for.
Be yourself, use your own moves, be a champion!
Don‘t get distracted by talks. Focus, keep your head
down here, not up in the sky!
NEVER EVER GIVE UP!
Drink lots of water.
Don‘t be afraid to make a move. If you make a mis-
take that‘s ok. It‘s normal.
Don‘t beat yourself up. You had the guts to try.
Don‘t worry about your look. The most important
things are your actions.
Don‘t be a big shot. Have good sportsmanship. Make
room for others.
GOOD LUCK!!

Pop Culture
Mechanical pencils have hit a big pop-
ularity zone lately. There are all different kinds of col-
ors, styles, and designs. Some have twisty-tops too.
Students like using them because it‘s the new thing to
use to write and sometimes they have pencil grips that
make it easier to write. You can get them at basically
any store! So get them now. By: Brynisha Campbell and Amber Privett 202
Do you like to play TRUTH or DARE with your
friends? Well here are some questions you can ask
your friends while you play.
DARE:
Scream as loud as you can.
Sing 3 nursery rhymes from beginning to end
without stopping.
Hop up and down like a frog.
Recite the alphabet backwards as fast as you
can… 3 times.
Stand on 1 foot for 20 minutes.
Spin around 20 times then walk in a straight line.
Make barnyard animal noises for 2 minutes.
TRUTH: Do you believe in UFO ‗s ?
What is the most embarrassing nickname you‘ve ever been
called ?
If you could trade places with anyone famous who would it be
and why ?
Name two people you‘d take to a desert island and why would
you take them?
Have you ever read someone else‘s diary?
Bridge art–i-facts
Students at the elementary school have been learning and
practicing drawing vehicles and transportation. First we looked
at different pictures of cars, buses, vans and trucks. Then we
broke them down into basic shapes and tried to draw them. We
experimented by drawing the outlines with paint, and
constructing vehicles out of construction paper.
This practice is in preparation for the Metra Safety
Poster Contest we are entering. Students will be working on
creating an original poster showing train safety.
Last year, 3 students from Bridge won 3rd and 4th place prizes.
——
Jr. High students have been learning about Vincent Van Gogh
and his famous paintings, including ―Starry Night‖.
Students have been practicing a drawing technique called
hatching, and will be creating a Van Gogh inspired drawing
using watercolors and oil pastels.
3rd and 4th grade Landscape paintings
3rd and 4th grade have been working on landscape paintings the past 4 weeks.
Students drew a landscape demonstrating horizon line, foreground and
background. We learned about color mixing, layering and how to create lighter
and darker versions of colors (tint). These beautiful paintings will be hanging up
throughout the school. NICE WORK!
