Dear Women in Business Members, The 2010-2011 year was a successful one for Women in Business! I want to thank all the members for their hard work and participation in our many activities. I’ve learned so much from serving as the President for this organization and could not have had the great experience I did without all of you. I know I will take what I have learned and find it very useful in the ‘real world’. I’d also like to encourage all of you to step up and apply for a leadership position in Women in Business. There are unique opportuni- ties and an even stronger network of women out there waiting to help you in any way possible. It was a pleasure working with all of you and I have the utmost confidence that Katie will develop the organization to the best it can be next year! Dear Women in Business Members,

The 20102011 year was a successful one for Women in Business! I want to thank all the members for their hard work and participation in our many activities. I’ve learned so much from serving as the President for this organization and could not have had the great experience I did without all of you. Mary McCain’s How to Work in a Large Organization

Mary McCain, Vice President for Global

Direct Procurement at Roche Diagnostic spoke at the joint event by WIB and the graduate level women in business organization, NAWMBA. McCain is a Krannert Alum who began at Roche as an entry level accountant and worked her way up to Vice President. About Working In a Large Organization: Working for a large company gives you plenty of opportunity for advancement.

Advancement is not always upward, it can also be parallel, as in switching departments.

Being new to a large organization can be very frustrating. Be prepared to learn acronyms

It can take many people to approve a small change.

Being in a large organization often means a lot of international opportunitiesHave a passport!

About Succeeding In the Workplace: Networking is incredibly important. Informal networking is better. Make sure people know your interests so that when an opportunity arises they know that you would be interested!

Volunteer for projects which cross over functionsgives you exposure and a diverse set of skills.

You’re a woman; you can multitask! If you don’t know something, ask questions. Never make anything up.

Don’t use your family as an excuse About being a good leader: Leading can happen from any position Communication skills are important It’s all about good listening skills not good talking skills

The higher you are in an organization, the more carefully you must choose your words or actions.

As you progress, you may end up leading your friends. It is important to treat everyone with the same respect. “Nothing replaces work ethic, so work hard don’t talk about working

hard .”

Women In Business’s team of 5 ladies took third in the Cummins Case Challenge open to all Krannert students this past Friday April 29th. The team put much time and effort in preparing a capacity expansion proposal for a panel of five judges that included Cummins CFO Pat Ward, Krannert professors Tony Greig and Patrick Johanns, Cummins Financial Controller Gary Letts, and Director of High Horse Power Strategy Nishant Prabhu. The team, made up of Anna Neese, Juliana Linder, Aakriti Agarwal, Olivia Hall, and Caitlin Dommermuth, is seen above with Gary Letts (far left) and Cummins employees and Krannert Alumni Monica Cortez and Noah Wethington (far right).

Community Service

Boiler Blast Brings

Members Together With Manual Labor

Many members on WIB joined in for one of the largest volunteer projects on campus, Boiler Blast. Not only was Boiler Blast one of the largest projects for Purdue,

but it also turned out to be our Women In Business’s largest community service project this year. The group of 15 or so ladies helped out a local West Lafayette couple with raking leaves, opening their pool, and spreading mulch for new landscaping. The experience brought members together who hadn’t been able to work together before. Nothing says bonding like folding up a smelly pool cover, right ladies!? Boiler Blast is definitely something WIB will continue to be a part of in upcoming years.

Teamwork seems to be key for Jordan F and Emily S.
