to wish each of you a restful
and enjoyable summer break.
Don’t forget to make plans to
attend IRA’s Southeast Re-
gional Conference in Nash-
ville, December 7-10. Vickie
and Randy are working dili-
gently to make this conference
a great success.
Thank you so much for the
many ways you have given
support during my tenure as
President of the Tennessee
Reading Association.
Delise Sanders
President, Tennessee Reading
Association
Dear TRA Members,
Serving as an officer in the Ten-
nessee Reading Association has
been a most rewarding learning
experience and one that has al-
lowed me to meet many wonder-
ful people across Tennessee and
the country. It has been a pleas-
ure to work with TRA board.
Their professionalism and
knowledge is a continuous
source of inspiration to our or-
ganization. Their support and
help were much appreciated and
certainly needed during my term
in office. This support will con-
tinue as Kristen Pennycuff-Trent
assumes the presidency at the
July board meeting.
With the retirement of so many
of our long time members, we
have a great task ahead of us in
maintaining our membership. I
want to encourage each council
member to make an effort to
meet new teachers and invite
them to join in their local coun-
cil. The Tennessee Reading As-
sociation offers many excep-
tional opportunities for profes-
sional growth in so many venues.
Making new teachers aware of
TRA’s offerings will not only
encourage new membership but
will also strengthen the teaching
profession as a whole. Please
remember to make new and pro-
spective members aware of our
web site, our journal and the
newsletter.
As we enter the closing days of
the 2008-09 school year, I want

The Coordinator’s Corner
Greetings!
I just wanted to let each of the TRA Board and
the Council Officers know how much I appreciate
your hard work and the many sacrifices you make
to ensure that Tennessee Reading is again highly
regarded as an outstanding council for the Inter-
national Reading Association. Congratulations
go to Vicki Manus on receiving the Maryann
Manning Outstanding Volunteer Award from IRA
and to Melissa Brock for receiving her award as
Metro Teacher of the Year. TRA will receive the
Horizon Award, for achieving the greatest growth
in student memberships for IRA in Atlanta in a
couple of weeks. Wow! What a year so far!
Speaking of Atlanta, I hope to see many of you
there. Over 20,000 teachers, administrators, re-
searchers, and others will gather at the 53rd An-
nual International Reading Conference on May 4-
8. This will be an exciting time for all of us.
TRA will have a booth supporting attendance for
the 26th Annual Southeast Regional we are host-
ing in Nashville, December 7 – 10, 2008.
Thanks for Vicki and her hard work this confer-
ence looks to be a great one with many wonder-
ful speakers and sessions to attend. Make your
plans now and request those Title 1 Funds to
attend. This conference and the international
have both been approved for attendance through
the Staff Development Component of Title 1
Legislation.
I look forward to Montgomery Bell in July. The
registration and lodging forms just went out by
email so remember I must have those no later
than May 14th. Charles Maynard will be our
entertainment and guest for the Thursday night
dinner.
Thanks again and I look forward to seeing all of
you in Atlanta or at Montgomery Bell.

Young Author’s and Junior Author’s Conference a Success!
On April 21 and 22, 2008, over 800 students from across Sevier County met for the annual author’s confer-
ence that was held at Sevier County High for the Junior Author’s (Grades 5-8) and at Pigeon Forge Primary
School for the Young Author’s (Grades 1-4). This year Sevier County Reading selected Susan Stevens Crum-
mel and her sister, Janet Stevens, to lead the conferences. The ladies were a tremendous success. Susan and
Janet involved all students in their presentation, were funny, exciting, and worked great with students. During
the day on the 21st and 22nd, Janet and Susan spent the day at two schools which had 100% membership in
SCRA and TRA. This is quite a treat to have the authors if all of your teachers and staff belong. Seymour Pri-
mary and Pigeon Forge Primary were delighted to host these outstanding authors. With book sales from the
schools and the conference, the Learning Tree sold over 1200 books. Each child who was chosen to attend the
conference from their class (2 students are chosen form each class), received a signed copy of “Cook- A –
Doodle – Do” along with a Reading Medal for their hard work. The older students received a back pack for
their hard work and attendance at the conference. Janet drew 6 foot tall bears designed by the students and
donated them to Seymour Primary and Pigeon Forge to be framed and hung in the library or entrance way.
We now look forward to next year’s conferences.
