Downtown Sounds is proud to present world-renowned sax player Richie Cannata who will perform with The Lords of 52nd Street at the Glen Cove Village Square Plaza on August 9 at 7:30 pm. In the 19-year history of the weekly summertime concert series, Cannata’s performances have drawn some of the biggest crowds and this year’s show should be no exception. During a storied career, Cannata has played with music icons including Billy Joel and The Beach Boys. He has also been known to bring some famous friends to Glen Cove to accompany his performances. For example, in 2012, former Yankee centerfielder Bernie Williams played with Richie and his band. This year, he will be performing with The Lords of 52nd Street, a band that was previously known as Topper. Topper was formed in the 1960s by Russell Javors on guitar and vocals, Doug Stegmeyer on bass and Liberty DeVitto on drums, and by 1976, they hit the big time performing in studio with Billy Joel on Turnstiles. When Joel decided to introduce a sax player into the mix, Cannata got the call and the rest, as they say, is history. For example, Cannata’s work on “New York State of Mind” stands the test of time and serves as an anthem for the Empire State. The Lords of Flatbush were also featured on Joel’s The Stranger, which holds the distinction of going ten-times platinum, and they performed with him during his international tour including concerts at Wembley Stadium, Budokan, the Sydney Opera House, Madison Square Garden,

Richie Cannata and The Lords of 52nd Street

Perform at Glen Cove Village Square August 12Carnegie Hall and the LA Forum. Following their initial success, The Lords of 52nd Street toured with The Piano Man for over a decade and performed on classic albums including 52nd Street, Glass Houses and The Nylon Curtain. However, the group disbanded in the late ‘80s and did not reunite until 30 years had passed and they were being inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. They have been performing regularly since getting back together. In addition to rejoining his former mates, Cannata’s recent past has been noteworthy on a number of other fronts. On week two of the Downtown Sounds Concert Series, Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello honored Richie by giving him the key to the city and naming the downtown intersection “Richie Cannata Place.” In addition to commemorating his legendary musical career, the ceremony celebrated what might very well be Richie’s biggest accomplishment to date as he had just waged a year-long battle with cancer and was now completely free of the insidious

disease. On August 9, his comeback will be complete as he re-takes the stage in his beloved home town. They are bringing some very special guests along: Julio Fernandez (Spyro Gyra), Ozzie Melendez (Marc Anthony), Amber Ferrari (Janis Tribute), and Ed Terry, as well as local favorite Eren Cannata to make it all in the family. Opening for the Lords of 52nd St will be rising star Gianni Paci. Few artists bear the distinction of transcending demographics as diverse and disparate as teeny-bopper bible Tiger Beat and esteemed arts-and-culture conglomerate Blackbook, but with his alluringly accessible yet surprisingly profound songwriting, Gianni Paci manages to do just that. With rock-star credibility that stretches far beyond his years, and a bachelor's degree from New York University, Paci performs as living proof that the most electrifying entertainers are those whose origins are as idiosyncratic

and outlandish as bottled lightning. Presenting sponsors for Downtown Sounds 2016 are the City of Glen Cove, Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Garvies Point. Other sponsors include Northwell Health Glen Cove Hospital, Kimco Realty, American Paving & Masonry Corp., Bridge Marine, The Downtown Café, Glen Cove Volvo, and The Glen Cove Printery. Media partner is The SUNY College at Old Westbury, OWWR Old Westbury Web Radio and OWTV Old Westbury Television. Host Joe Manfredi will be streaming the concerts live on HYPERLINK "http://www.ustream.tv" www.ustream.tv, keyword OWWR. Free parking for Downtown Sounds is available nearby. Rain location is the Wunsch Arts Center at R.M. Finley Middle School on Forest Avenue. For more information, call the Glen Cove BID, 516-759-6570,

Mayor's MailingTo The Editor, Some folks described Mayor Spinello's recent July 12th mailing concerning the "Resident Update - Glen Cove's Waterfront Redevelopment Project as nothing more than “scare tactics” and/or “an improper use of public funding for its preparation and mailing.” Neither is the case. As the CEO and Mayor of Glen Cove, it is his sworn and ethical duty to keep us updated on his knowledge, good or bad, of any professional and independent analysis of our future financial revenue, spending, borrowing, tax projections, jobs and wages. Like it or not, the manner in which he did this was both effective and efficient. The Glen Cove Waterfront Redevelopment Project is not something he is “doing to us.” It is instead something he is trying to “do for us” so as to make continued living in Glen Cove affordable, more productive and enjoyable. It seems as though most of the major industries, and large estates in Glen Cove that provided a large portion of our tax revenues are gone. This has probably hurt us tax-wise. The Mayor’s “Resident Update” reminds us at this point in time, what we are faced with. What do we want, future higher taxes if we do nothing, or the means to

stabilize property and school taxes by developing our waterfront? Push has come to shove – which will it be???

Hall of FameTo the Editor, On Monday, July 18 the 28th Annual John Maccarone Hall of Fame Golf Tournament was held at the Glen Cove Golf Course. All the money raised from this tournament goes to the John Maccarone Scholarship Fund and to date approximately $150,000 has been awarded to outstanding student athletes. This year, as a result of the 2015 golf tournament revenues and the generosity of the family of the late Dr. Sidney Canarick, we awarded $7,000 in scholarships to six graduating seniors at Glen Cove High School. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the golfers who participated in the 2016 tournament, as well as the following tee sponsors for their generous support:

Kiwanis Club of Glen Cove celebrates the kids of the Glen Cove Summer Youth Employment through the Glen Cove Youth Bureau. If you left town via the Arterial highway over the last couple of weeks you would have seen the kids of the Summer Youth Employment program painting the retaining wall. What an awesome experience for everyone! These kids and their supervisors have done an amazing job and should be commended. This truly builds pride and encouragement in these kids, this

Summer Youth Employmentwas a major accomplishment! And their families and other members of our community should be proud of them too. We as a club, encourage this type of Community service and wanted to show our support. So . . On Monday August 1 2016, Phyllis O Burnett, Pres, SDPLtG and Ann Marie Gailius, Sec/Tres, PDP arrived at the Youth Bureau with Pizza’s, beverages, fruit, and more for the kids! We want these kids to know that their efforts have been noticed and we wanted to Thank them for all that they do for our Community. Arriving at the Youth

Center, did we see a lot of familiar faces. Many of the students that participated in this and other community driven activities were also in the Builder’s Club through the After 3 Program a few years back along with members of the GCHS Key club. Both of the clubs are sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Glen Cove and we are so proud that these students continue their community service outside their club meetings and stay connected! BRAVO !

Dear Great Book Guru, I have been enjoying Friday nights at Sea Cliff Beach with great bands every week, beautiful sunsets, delicious treats from the Beach Café, and the added fun of meeting up with almost all of Sea Cliff. While waiting for the music to begin, I would love to have something light but worthwhile to read. Any suggestions? Lover of Sea Cliff Beach Music

Dear Lover of Sea Cliff Beach Music, I have just the book for you: VINEGAR GIRL by one of my favorite authors- Anne Tyler. This is a retelling of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” set in present day Baltimore- home to much of Tyler’s fiction. Kate Battista is unhappy in her job, her home, her life. She is smart, funny, and thoroughly underappreciated. Her father is on the verge of a major scientific breakthrough,

- Ann DiPietro

but he desperately needs the continued help of his soon- to -be deported Russian lab assistant. He turns in madcap fashion to Kate who immediately sees through her father’s scheming machinations. We soon find ourselves immersed in a sweet albeit wildly funny family drama with Tyler’s usual array of quirkily loveable characters. VINEGAR GIRL is definitely more Tyler than Shakespeare, and fans of hers will be delighted with this latest addition to her oeuvre. Recommended!

Mayor Bruce Kennedy’s

Comments to the County

Legislature in Regard to

Tax Breaks for RXR’s

Garvies Point Plan The following comments were presented by Sea Cliff Mayor Bruce Kennedy before the Nassau County Legislature on August 1 and are printed here upon request. I am here today in regard to Resolution 120-2016-16 that requests public subsidies to the Garvies Point development project in Glen Cove New York. It is imperative that you vote no on this Resolution. Despite what you just heard from Mr. Rechler and Mayor Spinello, this proposed project is not located in the Glen Cove Downtown, it is not Smart Growth, and the land in question has not been deemed fully remediated. This Resolution is a request for Nassau County tax payers to help fund a highly controversial, super-density, residential development project proposed by RXR; a $17 billion company. There are currently two separate legal actions in Supreme Court seeking to overturn the approvals of this project and voting on this Resolution while the legal actions are still outstanding would be unwarranted and prejudicial. To think that existing Nassau County taxpayers should pick up any portion of the County tax bill for 1,110 new luxury residential units for any period of time is outrageous. I trust you will agree that this request by the Glen Cove IDA (whose tax breaks generated fewest jobs in state in 2012, according to Comptroller DiNapoli) to saddle Nassau County taxpayers with this fiscally irresponsible and harmful plan is in violation of the public trust. To even consider this Resolution without first performing a SEQRA study of the fiscal impact to Nassau County tax payers which includes studying and analyzing all of the fiscal reports, studies, analyses, projections and economic predictions could be considered a dereliction of legislative duty. Being that the proposed Master Tax Agreement was only submitted on Friday at 7:30PM it is obvious that neither the Office of Legislative Budget Review nor the County Comptroller has had the opportunity to analyze any of the details of this proposal. The reason the City is asking for PILOT’s and the reallocation of the County’s rightful share is because the City IDA has approved $120 million in tax increment financing for a cost that the Redeveloper is solely obligated to. It is taking money that the taxpayers are entitled to and giving it to the Redeveloper. Amendment 4 – 50. (a) of the Land Disposition Agreement between Glen Cove & RXR states:The Redeveloper shall be responsible for the funding and construction of all Public Amenities. The Agencies acknowledge that the Redeveloper may seek funding

from third-party sources, other than the City of Glen Cove, and its Agencies, in connection with funding all or part of the Public Amenities…”· This Amendment is dated 06/29/2012 and I am unaware of any Amendment since that date that address the funding of Public Amenities. · The City’s written Q&A from the IDA’s 06/22/2016 meeting acknowledges Amendment 4 in relation to a question asked about the funding of the Public Amenities. It does not mention any Amendment since then that modifies 50.(a) but it does state that; “The 9th Amendment will reflect many of the items being analyzed as part of the Public Use Improvement financing, as well as various other business and governance items. It will be available to the public prior to adoption once the draft is negotiated and complete.” The action of the IDA to float a $120 million TIF bond to finance the Public Amenities is in violation of the LDA. It is in violation of the contract and takes future tax revenues, which legally belongs to the taxpayers of the City, and gives it to the Redeveloper. How can this be viewed as anything but a gift to the redeveloper? How can this not be viewed as a misappropriation of public funds? It is unfathomable for the County to approve this subsidy. Why should all current taxpayers in the County be forced to subsidize the future owners of these multi-million dollar condos for the next 40 years? Thank you for your consideration and for your vote of “NO” on this Resolution.

This week’s celebrity, a stage, radio, film and television actress, was born in New York City on Nov. 6, 1904. Her mother was also an actress and at one time was quoted in a newspaper article saying that she used to take our celebrity along with her to rehearsals and performances. One night, the then seven year, went missing. While the mother

frantically searched for her, holding up act two, the audience became restless. The youngster finally turned up. She had gone on stage dressed in her mother’s second act costume. She made a bow, much to the audience’s amusement. Our celebrity later remarked “And that is the first time I was ever on stage, and, I liked it so well, I stayed.”In the early 1940s, she would endear herself to the nation when she organized the Stage Door Canteen. A Broadway institution that entertained and served free meals to servicemen passing through New York. The canteen also brought about her role, playing herself in Frank Borzage’s movie “Stage Door Canteen” (1943). She was subsequently picked by MGM, and for the rest of the decade established an indelible mark in well-mounted soapers and

sentimental yarns as the all-caring, self-sacrificing mother. She was never more touching than as the mother of 5 boys killed in action in “The Sullivans” (1944) with Thomas Mitchell, or as Elizabeth Taylor’s wise mother in “Courage of Lassie” (1946). Other MGM fodder would include Greer Garson’s “Mrs. Parkington” (1944), Judy Garland’s “The Harvey Girls” (1946) and the Cole Porter biopic, played by Cary Grant, in “Night and Day” (1946).

Last Week’s CelebrityLast week’s celebrity was Joseph Schildkraut. He received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Alfred Dreyfus in “The Life of Emile Zola” (1937) with Paul Muni. He was the first non-American born actor to win an Oscar for Best Supporting

Actor. He gained further fame for playing the ambitious duc d’Orleans in the historical epic “Marie Antoinette” (1938) opposite Norma Shearer, Tyrone Power, John Barrymore and Robert Morley. He also gave a notable performance as the villainous “Nicole Fouquet” in “The Man in the Iron Mask” (1939) with Louis Hayward and Joan Bennett. His film output slowed down considerably at the outbreak of WWII, however. Nevertheless, he continued to show vitality on the stage with notable successes in “Clash by Night” (1941) with Tallulah Bankhead, “Uncle Harry” (1942) and “The Cherry Orchard” (1944). His Hollywood downfall happened when he signed his career away to the low budget Republic Pictures Studio for financial reasons. The films were

unworthy of his appearance and his greatest stage triumph would occur in 1955 as Otto Frank and he repeated that role on film in “The Diary of Anne Frank” (1959). However, in Hollywood’s bigger missteps, they didn’t even nominate him for an Academy Award. His last film appearance was wasted on the trivial role of Nicodemus in the epic failure “The Greatest Story Ever Told” (1965). The film was released posthumously, since our celebrity died of a sudden heart attack on Jan. 21, 1964, at the age of 68, several months after his third marriage. His second wife had died after 29 years of marriage a year before. Joseph was almost the same age as his father, Rudolf was when he, too, suffered a fatal heart attack.
