News from “The River” Big hello to our KHCC Friends from "The River"! We've been having a great time starting our second year in the K-5th grade Sunday School! We just finished a 3 week rotation learning about Adam and Eve. We had a puppet show, found out what happens when you add vinegar to milk (and then add baking soda?! What happened then?), and crafted each other in clay. We learned that God made us in His image; we all look so differ-ent but still have the same parts. God must really like variety! We also learned how sin separated us from God long ago because of Adam but how Jesus came to fix that. Thank you, God, for Jesus!

LITTLE BROWN CHURCH IN THE VALE Most of our Sunday School Classes sing this song, so I thought I would give you the background of it. I have sung this song

since I was a child, many years ago.

The Little Brown Church in the Vale sits in a beautiful park alongside Highway 218 in the town of Bradford, near Nashua in

northern Iowa. But it wasn’t there when the song was written.

A New York native named William Pitts, about twenty-seven, was traveling by stagecoach from his home in Wisconsin to

Fredericksburg, Iowa, to see his girlfriend. It was a bright afternoon in 1857. When the stagecoach made a pit stop in Brad-

ford, Pitts took a stroll among the trees to stretch his legs. The gently sloping hills formed a slight valley, and the Cedar River

flowed peacefully by. That grove of trees, it seemed to Pitts, would be the perfect setting for a church.

Unable to erase the scene from his mind, Pitts returned home and composed the words and music to “Little Brown Church in

the Vale.” Nothing came of his song, however, and he filed it away.

Five years later, Pitts, now married to his sweetheart, relocated to Iowa to be near his elderly in-laws and to teach music at

Bradford Academy. Imagine his surprise when he saw a church building sitting in the very spot he had previously envisioned

it. Christians in the community, growing tired of meeting in abandoned stores, had determined to build a church. The Civil

War was raging and times were hard, but by 1862, the building was up. It had to be painted using the cheapest color—which

    was brown.

When Pitts saw the little brown church in the vale, he rushed home and found “Little Brown Church in the Vale,” packed

among his papers. He sang his hymn at the building’s dedication in 1864. Soon afterward, he sold his manuscript to a pub-

lisher in Chicago for twenty-five dollars. He used the money to enroll in Rush Medical College, and William spent the rest of

his life as the physician in Fredericksburg, Iowa, about fourteen miles from Bradford.

Today the Little Brown Church boasts a membership of about one hundred, but it’s best known for the hundreds of weddings

and thousands of tourists who flock there each year to see the church in the valley by the wildwood, the little brown church in

    the vale.

The Church and the Board of Trustees have created the "David and Faye Farmer Memorial Trust" as a means to both honor Dave's memory and the memorial gifts given in his memory and Faye's continuing service. The trust is admin-istered by the KHCC Board of Trustees with the advise and consent of Faye. The purpose of the trust is "to provide grants or awards to deserving applicants based on such applicant's pursuit of education or vocations training or retraining" and the awards will be made annually as determined by the Trustees in amounts not exceeding the prior year's investment yield of the trust funds. Only applicants who have been on the role of active members maintained by KHCC as of January 1 of the year of the application are eligible for consideration. An application form will be available from the Church office as of January 2013 and the first awards may be made not later than May 15, 2013. The Trustees reserve the right not to make any grants or awards if, in their discretion, no appropriate applications are timely received. All grants are for a single year ,but applicants may reapply annually, and in such amounts as the Trustees determine based on the funds available for award. The grant or award is not to be based solely on financial need or on scholastic merit but the Trustees may take such factors, and any other matters, facts or circumstances deemed relevant into account in making awards or grants. All decisions are discretionary to the Trustees and all decisions are final.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are excited about this new service opportunity and hope that as memorial gifts as considered, our Church family will also remember David and honor Faye with gifts to the David and Faye Farmer Memorial Trust.

    Yours in His service,

    David R. Taggart, Chairman
