    Greetings From The Tulsa Wizard

409.354.6641Contact Phone: [email protected] Email:Our Web site: www.tulsawizard.com

Good news! Everything is going to be O.K.! was our motto as we dusted ourselves off from our awesomeadventures in our first issue of the Tulsa Wizard Periodical. Power Moves! We know Tulsa well, as only 22 years

can teach, BIT by Tulsa. as it were. (Galvestonians refer to people Born On The Island as B.O.I. So you ask some-one, How long have you been in Tulsa? and they can respond, I was Bitten. ...But we digress.)

But there is so much more to see, so much coming to be! Our adventures in Tulsa continue, and this time wefound ourselves in the heart of Brookside, Tulsas arguably most eccentric and eclectic district. It rang of Montrose,

Houston, with its cultural uniqueness and trendy, forward thinking businesses and visitors.Though a far cry from our south Tulsa adventures in Volume #1, crossing borders regularly into Jenks, Bro-

ken Arrow, and deep into Bixby, we were brought to new awareness of the many facets of the city we love. There isnew development and growth everywhere we look. Suddenly, inner-city tourism is a reality. People downtown wouldlike the open countyside, South Tulsans would love shopping on Midtowns Brookside or Utica Square, Midtown

people can escape it all byWe can boost OUR local economy by helping you stimulate YOUR economy. Recession is a poison word, and weare the antidote. How? You may ask. Good, we love inquisitive minds, it leads to renaissance. We continue to serveas a catalyst for commerce, uniting not just businesses, but the business owners with the community they share, work-

ing to create a dialogue and forum through our publication and companion web site. You dont have to love ALL of it,and if you dont like any of it, thats your perogative. Dont get caught being invested in nothing, or invested in every-thing and spread too thin. If you give the publication its full weight, seeing the opportunity and what is possible meansthat you are already where you need to be, as far as were concerned. At that point, we may inquire to and not pester

you about submitting content of your own for presentation in upcoming stand-alone Tulsa Wizard Periodicals. We plan to strengthen our staff, discovering and filling benchmark positions necessary to bring stability and

frequency of contact with you to a blinding, possibility-filled flashes of opportunities, reaching as many as we can withwhat we truly desire to bring, that of ourselves to each other. Sometimes the people that need the most help have toget clearance from the farthest away...coincidence? Dont make it so that your #2 doesnt give a number 2 about their

work. The most attractive thing in the world is a person who is connected with their passion and living it. This is whatis at the heart of the wizard... to help connect those who are inspired and to inspire those who arent connected.

We all have our To Do lists. But

were not talking here about THOSE

to do lists. Were talking about

    your big projects and ideas.

You know, the ones that never quite

seem to get any of your real attention,

because after all, you DO have to gopay your phone bill, make or pick up

dinner, and do laundry tonight, and

    you worked all day anyway.

Make time to roll up your sleeves and

tackle the BIG projects, the rewards

will be great. How can we help?

There once was a little boy whohad a bad temper. His Father gave him abag of nails and told him that every time helost his temper, he must hammer a nail intothe back of the fence.

The rst day the boy had driven37 nails into the fence. Over the next fewweeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradu-ally dwindled down. He discovered it was

easier to hold his temper than to drive thosenails into the fence. Finally the day camewhen the boy didnt lose his temper at all.

He told his father about it and thefather suggested that the boy now pull outone nail for each day that he was able tohold his temper.

The days passed and the youngboy was nally able to tell his father that all

the nails were gone. The father took his son by the

hand and led him to the fence. He said,You have done well, my son, but look atthe holes in the fence. The fence will neverbe the same. When you say things in anger,

they leave a scar just like this one. You canput a knife in a man and draw it out. But Itwont matter how many times you say Imsorry, the wound will still be there. A verbal

wound is as bad as a physical one.Remember that friends are very

rare jewels, indeed. They make you smile

and encourage you to succeed. They lendan ear, they share words of praise and theyalways want to open their hearts to us.

Show your friends how much youcare. Please forgive me if I have ever left ahole in your fence.

Life is funny. We are all so

been sold? No sister, youjust got

    sold. Welcome to the Matrix.

Well ok, but how do we get

out of this mess. Well you might

think we could think our way out,

but we cant. In the end the only dooris through the heart. But what if we

could use the matrix to connect us

with our hearts and empower us to

be all that we are? What if we could

    understand with our minds how

    miracles can happen, instant healing,

life, etc and not only understand

it, use this understanding to create

    powerful experiences to help us

remember who we are and live it.This is my journey

    to conscious capitalism In

subsequent issues I will outline my

    own personal journey to freedom

in hopes of connecting with others

on the path and show that the

only reason things are the way

they are is because we have agreed

to it, but now is the time to ask

ourselves. Who am I? , What do Ireally want?, and most importantly,

What is my irreplaceable role in the

    tapestry that is our world?

got an invite recently to a Tulsa Young

essionals group event, where 7 of the 9

    council representatives were there live

in the esh to answer questions and

    ideas about their citys development.

    It doesnt get much more

exciting than that, does it?(www.typros.com). It will

be a chore, and our hearts

have to be in it, but the

rewards for active participation are great. There are

empty seats right now where its at. Stand and be

counted, and make a difference in your world!

    The Future of Tulsa

Ive got good news and bad news. The badnews is that 80 percent of new businessesfail within their rst year of operation and 95

percent will fail in less than ve years. Withthe odds of failing far worse than succeedingwhy would anyone want to risk their time andmoney on a losing proposition? Putting yourmoney in a money-market account wouldoffer far less risk. Putting your time into asecure corporate job would be safer. Thegood news is that 90 percent of all businessfailures are due to poor managementdecisions. Why is this good news?Because understanding the causes of pastentrepreneurial failures could improve theodds of future entrepreneurial successes.

According to an article in MIT Sloan ManagementReview (which investigated the primary failureagents of new ventures), the most common reasonnew businesses fail is management incompetence.Rookie business owners lack the know-how to runthe enterprise. They make fatal mistakes that anexperienced, trained entrepreneur would easilyavoid. The second most common reason is unbalancedmanagement experience. Entrepreneurs assumethat their past experience as an engineer, team leader or department head is sufcient toensure business success. However, their lack ofexperience in other major activities of the business

    (nance, purchasing, selling and production)

causes the gradual failure of the enterprise. The third most common reason is a lack ofmanagerial experience. The owners lack the

training and the knowledge to effectively managepeople.

The fourth most common reason is lack of market-specic experience. This occurs when ownersenter a business eld in which they have limitedknowledge.

Two other common reasons for failure are neglectand fraud. Neglect involves owners risking failureby not devoting sufcient attention to the ventureOften, a less competent person is put in charge ofthe business so the owner can get time off to do otherthings, and the business gradually fails because

the interim manager is not capable. Fraud involvesthe intentional deception or misrepresentation tosuppliers, customers, nanciers or other owners. Itmay involve embezzlement of company funds.

The above agents of failure are general in natureTo be more specic, here are some commonentrepreneurial failure traps.

Inadequate records.Expansion beyond resources.Lack of information about customers.One-person management.Legal problems

By paying attention to these causes of failureand making plans to avoid them, you will greatlyensure the success odds for your business.

act of peace that grabbed the attention of

I can only imagine what that must have

Taste of Events in Taste of BixbyWe had just worked out the possibili-ties for a promotion for Its Greek To

Me at their newest location next to

the Spirit Bank Event Center in south

    Tulsa.

We were made aware of an event tak-

ing place at the event center that very

night. We did what we do, and went to

the car, donned our press pass, pock-

eted our digital camera, and loaded

up on Tulsa Wizards. What event was

going on in there? The people had

a right to know! we argued to our-

selves...but where was our crew at?Dollie and Jessica helped redirect us

back in after initial deection, and we

    were in. Awesome!

The Chamber of Commerce of Bixby

    had outdone themselves, organizing

    and rallying artists, photographers,

    craftspeople, restauranteurs, winery

reps, and more, working to serve

samples and wares to event attendees!

What events are going on near you? Be

there or be square! Where? We can help

you get there, but you must be aware.

ut we caught Free Press Summerfest! It was dusk, downtown Houston, a man

so brave and nondescript. He was armed

    only with high-traction footwear, shorts,

and a helmet, the shirt went hours ago.

His goal? To slide or push a TV up an

incline, apparently of his own design.

The television played an artsy montage

of interesting lm clips. This WAS art,

we guessed. We liked it. We LOVED it.

There was nothing like being there. If

you missed either, go to www.dfest.com
