Key Biodiversity Areas, criteria and rationale

Indian Ocean

KBAs delineated according to: Presence of trigger species (criteria in Langhammer et al., 2007)

Boundaries from existing management units: National parks and other protected areas, ownership of land

Existing zoning: notably ZNIEFF* work in Reunion & Mayotte, REDOM strategy** in Reunion using criteria comparable to KBAs methodology

Natural habitats area where lack of existing management unit or unknown zoning: unity of ecosystems, ecosystem services, and depth (e.g. marine KBAs of REU)

KBAs still under delineation for Îles éparses and Chagos archipelago (BIOT).

*ZNIEFF - Zone naturelle d'intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique (Natural zone of ecological interest, fauna and flora) **REDOM strategy - methodology to prioritize the zones of ecological interest in Reunion

Major themes discussed as a regional priority: Control/eradication of invasive alien species and enhanced

biosecurity, with habitat restoration undertaken as necessary Increased study of the potential impacts of climate change Effort to increase baseline knowledge in both terrestrial and marine

environments to be able to better inform placement and management of protected areas

Regional Investment Strategy

Addressing lack of baseline knowledge and improving management of Marine Protected Areas

Needed: All South Atlantic territories

Project example:

Objectives: To enable a scientifically rigorous approach to marine spatial planning and sustainable fisheries management at Ascension Island, including the creation of the Atlantic Ocean’s largest Marine Protected Area (MPA) Expected results: • Creation of an evidence-based pelagic MPA at Ascension Island, incorporating data from

fisheries, satellite telemetry and species distribution modelling within a formal marine spatial planning framework (e.g. Marxan).

• The development of informed policies and practices for regulating inshore and offshore fisheries. • An enhanced understanding of Atlantic bigeye and yellowfin tuna stocks, relevant to both local

marine management and regional stock management more generally.

Priority areas for action

Investing in biological control on Ascension Island: a sustainable approach to invasive species management in one of the world’s most heavily invaded Island ecosystems

Timeline: 2017 – 2019 (2 years) Estimated budget required: €150,000 Geographic scope: Ascension Island

Regional Investment Strategy

Tackling invasive species

Needed: All South Atlantic territories

Project example:

Objectives: To test the suitability of established biological control agents of noxious environmental weeds, in particular the highly invasive shrub Prosopis juliflora, for release on Ascension Island. Invasive plants pose a significant threat to the terrestrial ecosystem of Ascension Island but most are now too well established for eradication or physical clearance. Expected results: The expected outcome is a sustained reduction in the growth and spread of invasive plant species, and potentially a retreat from already invaded areas in the longer term. This is likely to have substantial benefits for native species, in particular endemic plants which are unable to compete with aggressive introduced weeds, but also invertebrates adapted to Ascension’s original volcanic desert environment.
