Volunteer Spotlight Wendy Lutzke & Laurie Paulin

Lauren PaulinHow did you become a volunteer at FV?My sister, Wendy, asked me if I wanted to volunteer for TimeSlips. It sounded like a lot fun, so I agreed. What was your first impression of FV? FV is a beautiful facility. The staff is very car-ing and the facility itself is always so appealing. The residents always look so well cared for and are happy in their surroundings. I’m happy to know there is a place like FV available if I need a place to live in my older age. What is it like to volunteer at FV? I love interfacing with residents! They have such great personalities and appreciate having someone to talk to them. If someone was hesitant to volunteer at Felician Village, what would you tell them? Try it. You’ll love it!

Welcome Carla Schommer who joined Felician Village as the new Director of Mission Services on January 18. We’re excited to have Carla on board to share her vast pastoral care knowledge and experience with us. Carla comes to Felician Village

from St. Francis Home /Agnesian Health Care in Fond du Lac where she was a Chaplain since June of 2016. St. Francis Home is a Catholic sponsored Life Plan Community similar to

Felician Village. Her focus there was to attend to the spiritual needs of residents, their families and staff. She led a variety of resident and staff enrichment programs across the campus. In addition, she coordinated and led prayer rituals and services for a variety of faith traditions. Prior to St. Francis Home, Carla was the Director of Pastoral Care at St. Francis Convent for the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross in Green Bay. In addition, she taught at the college level. Carla is board certified by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. She earned a Master’s in Pastoral Care and Health Care Chaplaincy from Loyola University in Chicago, an MA in counseling from Lakeland University and a BA in finance also from Lakeland.Carla and her family live in the Sheboygan area.

Wendy LutzkeHow did you become a volunteer at FV?I became a volunteer when I found out that staff at FV were doing the TimeSlips activity and I was really interested in helping with it!What was your first impression of FV? It’s comfortable, loving and beautifully maintained. What might someone be surprised to know about you? Before becoming a teacher I loved my college job as an activity aide at Lutheran Care Home in Michigan. If someone was hesitant to volunteer at Felician Village, what would you tell them? The staff is so friendly and so grateful for volunteer help!

Winter 2018 | Volunteer Connection 3

As I write this letter today, the sun is shining, the temperature is in the 40’s and the promise of spring seems right around the corner. However, I know there will be a few cold and snowy days yet in March, a month associated with a time of renewal and growth. This season of planning for growth and development is not always smooth – whether it is in nature or in the day-to-day operations of a business. New ideas and processes are always on the horizon, are exciting and energizing, but yet need to be researched and studied to ensure they are the best decisions for our ministry, our residents and staff, and the community in general. This opportunity for growth and transformation by its very nature is exciting and people can get caught up in the need to change just to change. As we continue our planning and budget processes this year, keep in mind all those who work every day to keep Felician Village in a cycle of growth and development for today and tomorrow. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.” Felician Village is so fortunate to have board members and employees who strive to make the planning process move forward and aren’t overwhelmed by the fear of change.

May you have a Blessed Easter season.

Seniors are a favorite target of scammersMillions of people fall victim to scams each year, including an increasing amount of seniors who are especially targeted. Scammers are becoming more savvy in their fraudulent ways, so it's important to be aware of ways scammers gather sensitive information. Knowing the signs of com-mon financial scams can help prevent you from falling victim to these frauds. Here are a few different scams:1. Tech Support ScamHave you received a pop-up

on your computer that warns you have a virus and says, “Call this number?” When you call that number, they will try and sell you costly repairs that you don’t need. Instead, contact a local com-puter repair shop for a second opinion. 2. “Tax Money Owed” ScamA scammer who claims to be a tax agent will call saying you will be arrested if you don’t pay the money you owe on your taxes. But keep in mind, a tax agent will not make initial contact over the phone.

In these instances, just hang up the phone.3. “Grandma/Grandpa, Help” ScamA scammer calls, claiming to be your grandchild and says they have been arrested for drunk driving and need bail money. Grandparents are very likely to give the money, with-out question, out of love for their grandchild. The best way to handle this, is to call the parent or someone else who knows your grandchild and ask them about the situation.

Purple and

Proud!

On Wednesday, February 21, the Griffin Companions, second graders from Jefferson Elementary in Manitowoc, ventured to The Gardens for their monthly visit with residents. The afternoon was filled with great conversation, lots of laughs and fun activities like word searches and puzzles. Residents also gave their addresses to the students so they could write them letters throughout the upcoming months. This intergenerational event is always a great experience for all involved.
