MOSHhasbeenservingtheeducationalneedsofthecommunitysinceitsinceptionin1941.Foundedonthemotto,“Curiosityisthebeginningofwisdom,”educationisattheheartofMOSH’smission.

MOSHMilestones

1941 -TheAssociationforChildhoodEducationchartersTheJacksonvilleChildren'sMuseum.1948 -TheJacksonvilleChildren'sMuseummovesinaVictorianmansioninRiverside.1969 -Opened33,000-square-footbuildinginamorecentralizeddowntownlocationalongtheSouthbank.1977 -TheJacksonvilleChildren'sMuseumbecomestheJacksonvilleMuseumofArtsandSciences.1983 -TheMuseumearnsitsfirstaccreditationfromtheAmericanAllianceofMuseums.1988 -TheJacksonvilleMuseumofArtsandSciencesbecomestheMuseumofScienceandHistory(MOSH).

VolunteerRequirements

1. CompleteandsubmitthevolunteerapplicationthroughMOSH’swebsite.Theapplicationmaybeobtainedfromourwebsiteathttp://www.themosh.org/support-us/volunteer/

2. Successfullycompletetheappropriatebackgroundcheck(seebelow)3. AttendorientationthatwillbescheduledbytheVolunteerManager.4. Completealltrainingrequiredforthevolunteerpositionselected.5. Committoaminimumof96hoursperyearforactivevolunteerbenefits.6. TheMinimumageforallvolunteersis14.

VolunteerPositionsTeenInternTeenInternsareanintegralpartoftheMOSH’sprogramsandserveinavarietyofrolesinthemuseum.Internswillassistwithsummerandwintercamps,museumspecialevents,educationalpresentations/programmingandwiththepreparationfortheseprograms.TeenInternswillbeassignedtoassistwithCamps,ScienceDemonstrations,theFloridaNaturalistCenterorthePlanetarium.Opentolocalstudentsenrolledingrades9th-12th.

CollegeInternThisspecializedgroupofvolunteersspendsasemesterworkingonspecificprojectsinvariousdepartments.Studentsreceiveachancetoworkalongsidemuseumprofessionalsandgainvaluableworkexperienceforcoursecreditordegreeenrichment.Positionsofferedcanvary,buttypicallyincludeHistoryandNaturalHistoryCollections,EducationandCurriculum,ExhibitDesign,SpecialEventsandCommunications(PleasevisittheMOSHwebsiteforthemostuptodatelistofpositions).Opentostudentscurrentlyenrolledincollegeorvocationalschool.AdultVolunteerThisdedicatedgroupservesthemuseuminavarietyofroles,andassistswiththegeneraloperationsofthemuseum.Volunteersofallagestypicallydedicate4-8hoursperweektoanassignedjobatMOSHanddutiescanincludeassistinginthePlanetariumorFloridaNaturalistcenter,providingdirectionorguidancetoguestsinthemuseum,servingasanexhibitmonitorinthemuseumorassistingwithspecialevents.(PleasevisittheMOSHwebsiteforthemostuptodatelistofpositions)Thisgroupisopentoalladults18+.Group/CorporateVolunteersOnoccasionthemuseumworkswithcorporategroupsofvolunteers,whoallcomefromthesameorganizationorbusiness.Thesegroupstypicallyworkwithalargeprojectorspecialeventatthemuseum.Thesepartnershipsofferachanceforcommunitygroupstogivebacktothecommunityinafunandofteneducationalway.Volunteergroupsareexemptfrombackgroundcheck,astheyareusuallyone-timevolunteers.

7 BackgroundcheckinformationAccordingtoMOSHBackgroundcheckpolicy,allmuseumvolunteersaresubjecttoabackgroundcheck(Level1orLevel2)todeterminethesuitabilityforavolunteerpositionthecandidateisbeingconsideredfor,andtoensurethesafetyofourstaff,volunteersandvisitors.Backgroundchecksmustbecompleted(andMOSHhavereceivedtheresults)beforeyourfirstscheduleshift.MOSHhastherighttorequireasatisfactorycompletionofvolunteerscreening,includingcriminalrecord,DMVrecordanddrugscreen,foreveryapplicanttothevolunteerprogram.Whenabackgroundinvestigationrevealsadiscrepancybetweeninformationonavolunteerapplicationandtheinformationobtainedduringthebackgroundcheckprocess,theymayworkwiththeapplicanttoresolvetheinconsistency.TheresultsofabackgroundcheckareconfidentialandaretobediscussedwithappropriateMOSHemployeesonastrict“needtoknow”basis.TheMuseumusestwodifferentlevelsofbackgroundchecksforitsvolunteersandstaff.

• Level1-Thisisanamebasedbackgroundcheckthatiscompletedforallvolunteersinthemuseumwhohavelimitedcontacttimewithminors.Level1screeningsarere-checkedeverytwoyears.Formsrequired:AcknowledgementandAuthorizationforCriminalBackgroundCheckForm

• Level2-Thisisafingerprintbasedbackgroundcheckandiscompletedforallstaffmembersandforvolunteersthathavemorethan10hoursperweekworkingwithminors.Anyonevolunteeringforasummercampprogrammorethan10hourspermonthisalsosubjecttoaLevel2screening.Level2screeningsarerecheckedeveryyear.Formsrequired:VECHSWaiverAgreement,ParentalApprovalForm(minors),AffidavitofGoodMoralCharacter(minors)

Ifyouhavequestionsaboutthebackgroundcheckpolicyorareconcernedwiththeresultsofyourbackgroundcheck,pleasecontactthevolunteermanager.MOSHmaintainsalistof‘disqualifiers’andthevolunteermanagercansharethesewithyou.WorkSchedulesandtimecommitments:Regularworkscheduleswillbemadebetweenthevolunteerandtheirassignedsupervisor.ThiscouldbetheVolunteerManageroranotherstaffmember.Scheduleswillbebasedonyouravailability,andweunderstandthiscanchangefromtimetotime.Volunteeropportunitiesareavailablealmost7daysaweekandsometimesintheevenings,sowetrytoaccommodateeventhemostchallengingschedules.Wedoaskthateachofourvolunteercommitaminimumnumberofhourstotheprogram.Manyofourvolunteersexceedtheseguidelines.

• TeenInterns–100hours/year(75overthesummerand25duringtheschoolyear)• CollegeInterns-100hours/semester-Thisisjustaminimum,andchangespercourserequirements• AdultVolunteers-96hours/year(thisworksoutto2,4hoursshiftspermonth)• Corporate/groupVolunteers-Minimum4hoursshiftsperdayofvolunteering

WetreatourmuseumvolunteerslikepartoftheMOSHstaff,andrequestthatifyouareunabletomakeascheduledassignment,pleaseletyoursupervisorortheVolunteerManagerknowassoonaspossible(preferably48hoursinadvance)soareplacementcanbefound.PleasenotethatyoumaynotbringyourchildrenorotherfamilymemberstoMOSHduringyourvolunteershift,unlessspecialarrangementshavebeenmadeinadvancewiththeVolunteerManager.

8 OrientationAllVolunteerswillneedtoattendavolunteerorientation.Thissessionisdesignedtoorientyoutothebuilding,theMOSHstaffandpertinentinformationregardingyourdutiesatMOSH.TheVolunteerManager(ordesignee)willhostthesessionandmakesureallofyourquestionsareanswered.Specificpositionmayrequireadditionaltrainings.AllOrientationsessionswillinclude:

ParkingVolunteersshouldparkintheMOSHparkinglot,betweenthebuildingandtheMainStBridge.Pleaseavoidusingtheparkinginfrontofthebuildingwhenpossible(RiverCityLot)soguestscanuseit,asthesespacesarelimited.Volunteersshouldenterthroughthefrontdooronly.SigninginPleaseremembertosign-inwhenyoufirstarriveatthemuseum,asthisishowwekeeptrackofyourhoursaswellaswhoiscurrentlyinthebuilding.

• ALLVolunteerssigninusingVolgisticsinthesouthStairwell• Thereisabackupclipboardfortimeswhenthesoftwareisnotfunctional

Dependingontheassignedduty,youwillneedtowearavolunteervest(locatedinNorthstairwell)anametag,oryourvolunteershirt.Checkwiththevolunteermanageroryourimmediatesupervisorforyourspecificposition.PersonalPossessionsYoumaybringalockandusethelockersintheSouthTowertostoreyourvaluables.Becarefulnottoleavepursesandvaluablesinthepublicareas,classrooms,orinavisiblelocationinyourcar.Themuseumisnotresponsibleforanylossesorthefts.CellPhonesCellphonesshouldonlybeusedifabsolutelynecessaryandkeptonsilentmodewhilevolunteering.Phonesshouldbestoredsecurelyinalockerorinapocketduringyourshift.Inanemergency,ifyouareunavailablebyphone-familyandfriendscancallthemuseumat904-396-6674,andastaffmemberwilllocateyou.RestandMealperiodsVolunteerswillbegivena30minuterest/mealperiodwhentheyareservinginthemuseumlongerthan4hours.Feelfreetomakeuseofthestaffbreakroomorthevolunteerservicesroomonyourbreaks.Thereisamicrowave,toaster,coffee,watercooler,andarefrigerator.Therearealsopicnictablesoutside,nearfriendshipfountainwhentheweatherisnice.Pleasenofoodordrinks(exceptwater)outsideofthebreakroom.DressCode(BusinessCasualAttire)Theimageofthemuseumisinfluencedbytheappearanceofourstaffandvolunteers.Pleasekeepaneat,clean,professionalappearance,anddressinappropriateattire,suitableforyourduties.T-shirts(exceptvolunteert-shirts),tanktops,rippedorfrayedjeans,andflip-flopsarenotallowed.Thefollowingdresscodeisappropriateformostjobareas:

10 VolunteerReviewsandDisciplineAllvolunteerswillreceiveaninitialreviewaftertheirfirst16hoursofvolunteeringtohelpensureproperplacement,understandingofpositionandmutualbenefittobothMOSHandthevolunteer.Thesereviewswillbeconductedbythevolunteermanager,andshouldincludethevolunteer’sdirectsupervisorwhenpossible.Aftertheinitial16hourreview,volunteerswillbereviewedannuallybytheVolunteerManagerandtheirimmediatesupervisor.Thisensuresthatwearecontinuallyassessingtheplacementofavolunteerwithinthemuseum.Itisalsoatimetocollectvaluablefeedbackandsuggestionsfromourvolunteerstoimproveourprograms.Whenavolunteer’sperformanceisbelowthestandardsrequiredbyMOSH,theVolunteerManagerorareasupervisormayissueaverbalwarningoutliningtheproblem.IftheproblempersistsawrittenwarningandmeetingwithVolunteerManagercouldoccurtodiscussappropriatenessofcontinuingvolunteerworkatMOSH.

VisitorRules

TheserulesarepresentedasareferencetoourVolunteers,whoareenabledtoassiststaffinenforcingtheseruleswhennecessarytoensuresafetyandprotectmuseumresources.AsarepresentativeofMOSH,pleasehelpusensurethattheserulesarefollowed.Ifyoudonotfeelcomfortableconfrontingavisitorwhoisinviolationoftheserules,pleaseimmediatelyalertanavailablestaffperson.InappropriateVisitorBehaviorisConsidered:

• Smokinginsidethebuilding,inthecourtyard,orincloseproximitytothedoors• Visitingwithoutshirtorshoes• EngaginginoverlyrowdyactivitieswhichdisturbthereasonablepeaceandcomfortofMOSHvisitorsand

AtMOSHwetakethesafetyofourguests,staffandvolunteersveryseriously,andsometimescallonourvolunteerstoassistisspecificsituations.MOSHmaintainsacompleteSafetyandEmergencyActionPlan,andacopycanbeobtainedfromtheVolunteerManager.Wehaveincludedexcerptsfromthemostrelevantsectionshere.FireandBuildingEvacuationsMuseumstaffandvolunteersshoulddoeverythingpossibletoeliminatefirehazards.Ifafiredoesignite,ithasthepotentialtospreadquicklyandcauselossoflifeorproperty.Ifthefirealarmgoesoff,makeyourwaytothenearestexit,usingstairs,nottheelevator.Instructanyvisitorsaroundyoutoexitthebuildingviathestairway,butdonotconsiderityourresponsibilitytoclearthebuilding.Thesafegatheringzoneisthewestparkinglot(RiverCityBrewing).Oncegatheredoutside,remainwithstaffandguest,anddonotreenterthemuseumunlessinstructedto.HurricanesandMuseumClosuresMOSHFollowstheDuvalCountySchoolBoard’sdecisionsforclosingschools.Whenschoolshavebeenclosed,themuseumwillbeclosed.TheExecutiveDirectormayalsoclosethemuseumformajorimpendingstorms.TheVolunteermanager(orimmediatesupervisor)willcontactanyvolunteersscheduledduringtheclosure.MedicalIncidents/EmergenciesManyofthemuseumstaffaretrainedinFirstAidandCPR.Forminorinjuries,pleaseseethefrontdeskandatrainedstaffmembercanassistyouinthefirstaidroom.AnincidentformmustbefilledoutbyastaffmemberforANYaccidentorinjury,nomatterhowsmall.Theseareavailableatthefrontdeskandinthefirstaidroom.Pleasereportanyinjuries(yoursorapatrons)tothefrontdeskstaffimmediately. Foramedicalemergency,call911andnotifyastaffmemberassoonaspossible.AnIncidentformmustbefilledoutforanymedicalrelatedissues.

13 ScopeofNon-harassmentPolicyThispolicyisintendedtocoverallMOSHvolunteersandotherindividualswithwhomvolunteershavebusiness,service,orprofessionalcontactthroughtheirtenureatMOSH,includingteeninterns,employeesandstudentsparticipatinginprogramsattheMuseum.Further,nosupervisorhastheauthoritytosuggesttoanyvolunteerthattheircontinuedinvolvement,futureadvancementorothertermsoftheirparticipationwillbeaffectedinanywaybyanyvolunteer’sacceptanceofahostileoroffensiveworkenvironment,orbyanindividual’senteringinto(orrefusingtoenterinto)anyformofpersonalrelationshipwiththesupervisor.ComplaintProcedureInregardtoharassment,anyindividualwhobelievesthattheyarebeingharassedbyasupervisor,MOSHemployee,othervolunteer,orbelievesthattheirinvolvementwithMOSHisbeingadverselyaffectedbysuchconduct,shouldimmediatelyreportsuchconcernstothevolunteermanager.Ifyoufeeluncomfortablediscussingtheissuewithyourownmanager,youshouldpromptlynotifytheHRDepartment.Allcomplaintsofharassmentshouldbemadeinwritingandsignedbythereportingindividual.Afteracomplaintofharassmentisreceived,apromptandimpartialinvestigationwillbeconductedandappropriatedisciplinaryactioncalculatedtoendtheproblemandpreventitsrecurrence.Allcomplaintsofharassmentwillbehandledinadiscreetmannerandinformationwillbelimitedtothosepersonnelwithaneedtoknow.Drug-FreeWorkplaceTheMuseumprohibitsanyillegaluse,possession,sale,manufacture,ordistribution,ofdrugs,alcohol,orothercontrolledsubstancesonitsproperty.ItisalsoagainstMuseumpolicytoreporttowork,ortowork,whileundertheinfluenceofdrugsoralcohol.AlcoholMOSHvolunteersareprohibitedfromconsumingalcoholiftheyhavebeenassignedjobdutiesataneventwhichalcoholmaybeavailable.Ifnotworkinganevent,MOSHvolunteersmaydrinkinmoderation;however,youstillrepresentMOSHandgoodjudgmentandresponsiblebehaviorisexpected.TobaccoTheentiremuseumisaNON-SMOKINGfacility.Smokingisnotpermittedintherestrooms,thecourtyard,orinanypartofthebuilding.Pleasemakevisitorsawareoftheruleifyouseeanyoneinviolation,ornotifyastaffmemberimmediately.
