We look forward to seeing Lila at the Center on Thursdays and Fridays each week. Thursdays she is with us as a line dancer (and line dance instructor) and on Fridays she attends the afternoon dances. As you can see, dancing has become a large part of Lila’s life. When she joined the Center in 2011, line dancing was most important to her, but at the urging of the choreographed ballroom instructor (who also found her a dance partner) she became interested in other forms of dance as well. Lila shared that, “The Center is a wonderful place to be. I have found many new friends who I enjoy being around, and I always look forward to a good time.” We look forward to seeing Lila and her fellow dancers in the Fall Follies this year on September 10 at East High. Linda’s NotesAs so often happens in life, we are dealing with changes here at

Active Generations. I hope you’ve noticed a wonderful addition to our team: Rita Nelson has

been helping in the office with all sorts of administrative support and special projects. If you’ve noticed signs and announcements around the building that are more fun than usual, that’s Rita’s doing, too!

Rita comes to us through a program of the Woodbury County Community Action Agency that places team members in various not-for-profits around the community. We are very grateful to the Community Action Agency for awarding us this wonderful opportunity to have a part-time staffer. Rita’s here between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. five days a week. Stop by and say “hi” to her!

That’s the good part. Now for the sad news.

Bruce Fey, who’s been our Membership Director/Bookkeeper/Website Guru/Office Administrator since April 2015, is leaving us. You’ll recall that Bruce has already retired once, from Sabre Industries. So he came to us with the skills needed to really make a difference in our bookkeeping and in administrative support in general. He has been able to automate membership files (although we still keep the “old school” index card file system, too!) and has really been invaluable in updating the website and other technological support. Plus, he’s a great guy.

I think you can see what we mean when we say he’ ll be missed, right?

Bruce’s bride, Sue, is now retiring. So Bruce wants to spend more time with her: traveling, visiting family and friends, and otherwise kicking back.

We’re working to find someone to pick up the reins for the Bookkeeping/Membership position as soon as possible. So if you know of someone who might be interested, please ask them to visit our Siouxland Center for Active Generations website (siouxlandseniorcenter.com) for the job description and application instructions.

In the meantime, Bruce has graciously offered to stick around a bit while we search for someone to fill his big shoes and to facilitate as smooth a transition as possible. So we don’t know when his last day will officially be. But we do know we hope Bruce and Sue come back often to visit. I’m thinking they’d be a great billiard team, don’t you?

Seriously, we wish both Feys all the best. Retirement can be a really fun time as so many know! So we won’t say goodbye to Bruce; we’ll wish him “happy trails” until we meet again (hopefully soon and at Active Generations!).

Achieving GoalsMember Martha Milhan is shown with

the 75 items she recently knit for the Siouxland Center for Active Generations. She stated that, “It took 777 hours to complete this project, but it was well worth it.” By doing this act of kindness she achieves three goals, which are:

• Keep someone else warm• Keep my stiff fingers moving• Keep my mind working Martha knits 2-5 hours a night

and suggests others do the same type of activity. Thanks Martha for your generosity.

Ingredients:1 sheet puff pastry, thawed but still cold 4 oz. cream cheese, softened1/3 cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling 2 Tbsp. heavy cream1/3 cup lemon curd, homemade or store bought1 pint raspberries¼ cup seedless raspberry jam, warmed powdered sugar1 egg for egg wash

Directions for the Tart:Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat baking mat. Unfold the thawed out puff pastry on a (lightly) flour dusted area and gently roll into a 10x11 inch rectangle. Carefully transfer to your baking sheet and brush the edges with a little bit of water and fold all four sides to create a lip. Using a fork, poke holes all over the center of your tart. Gently brush the entire tart with an egg wash and sprinkle about 2 tsp. of sugar over the center. Bake until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven and carefully with the back of a spoon press the center back down if it has puffed. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Directions for the Filling:In a bowl combine softened cream cheese and sugar. Mix with a hand mixer or by hand until smooth and the cream cheese and sugar are well mixed. Add the heavy cream and mix for about one minute, and then fold in the lemon curd. Assemble the Tart:Carefully spread your lemon cheesecake mixture over the center of your cooled tart crust. Arrange berries decoratively over the curd and drizzle with the warmed jam. Dust the tart with powdered sugar.

Notes:Tart is best made and eaten on the same day. You can prepare the tart along with the cheesecake filling ahead of time. Refrigerate the filling and assemble the tart right before eating.*Other berries would taste great as well; such as blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, or a combination of all!

Shredtastic Totals

We would like to thank Connections Area Agency on Aging (CAAA) for their part in planning the May Shredtastic and Drug Take Back Event. Special thanks go to Document Depot, the Sioux City Police Department, local TV and radio stations for their coverage of the event, and all the volunteers who worked.

CAAA had some great totals to share with us:

Estimated amount of paper shredded…4600 poundsEstimated amount of drugs taken in… (5) large kitchen bagsEstimated number of vehicles delivering items…150Estimated number of people who stopped by…240*That’s a lot of paper, drugs, and

traffic in two hours! Again, it was a very successful day. Watch upcoming Sunshine Newsletters for the September date for the next Shredtastic Event.

Parks & Rec ReminderAs part of your Siouxland Center for Active Generations membership, you will be able to swim at Cook Pool during the summer of 2016 at a reduced rate. If you swim between noon-1:00 P.M., enjoy the discounted price of $1.25 per member; you can’t beat that!

Thanks to the Sioux City Parks & Rec for this great offer.

Observations for July:1. I wish the buck stopped here, as I could use a few. 2. As long as there are tests, there will be prayers in public schools.3. Americans are getting stronger, 25 years ago, it took two people to carry ten dollars’ worth of groceries. Today, a five year old can do it. 4. I got the bill for my surgery, now I know why doctors were wearing masks!5. When you go to court you are putting yourself in the hands of 12 people that weren’t smart enough to get out of jury duty. Deduction: I’m going through my second childhood; it’s my fourth time through.

Attention.....the year is half over or…the last half is still to come! Our tap group has been working diligently on our numbers for the Fall Follies.

Along with working on routines we also have been busy with our costumes. I know we will be very busy all summer. Our Friday afternoon tappers work so hard, but still enjoy going to the Friday afternoon dances when they are finished practicing. We do appreciate all the commitment of these gals. Remember, we welcome all to stop in and see us sometime…maybe you’ll like it and join us!

Dancing is like silent poetry…Life is bad and sad,And can be good it’s well understood,If you won’t dance, Give yourself a chance!

~ BJ Heitzman

The group has the usual aches, pains, but hopefully everyone will be comfortable and healthy for the Fall Follies. With so few in the group, we really do appreciate when we have everyone there. We continue reviewing and try to work in some new numbers as well. As long as we can make it a fun time it is so worthwhile for us as well as the audience.

Dancing is moving to the music without stepping on anyone’s toes, pretty much the same as life.

Belly Dancing Returns

This class will be offered on Tuesday mornings from 10:15-10:45, in the Exercise Room. No special clothing or equipment is needed to participate. Individual moves will be taught so each participant can create their own dance form. To explain more about the art of belly dancing…this is a Middle Eastern dance that takes many different forms depending upon the country of origin. It is a nonimpact, weight-bearing exercise suitable for all ages. It is a good exercise for the prevention of osteoporosis in older people. The isolation move improves flexibility of the torso, benefits the spine, and helps strengthen a person’s core. It can also build strength in the arms, shoulders, legs, hip, and back muscles. It might be wise to give this class a chance to see how it could improve your life.

~Pam Stephan

Chess Group Info Join our Chess group on Wednesdays at 10:00 in the Meeting Room where you can receive instruction, and learn strategy regarding the game of Chess. All levels of players are welcome and we are considering the possibility of a tournament later this year, with prizes! The only requirements are Center membership and a winning attitude!

Coloring Corner Update We are ready to experience a great form of therapy…coloring! Many of us have heard (and many of us have experienced) how coloring can help us relax. Join your friends, in the Classroom at the Center, beginning Wednesday, July 20, at 1:00. Good times guaranteed!

Young at Heart Line Dancers I want to start this month’s newsletter by saying a big thank you to Lila Henke

for relieving Arlene, so that Arlene could take the time necessary to help her husband with health issues. We appreciate this Lila. I want to thank both gals for doing all they do, as I could not run all four classes in one day without their help.

We performed for the Retired Teachers Association monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 21, and we were so well-received. This makes it a lot of fun for us!

We are now looking forward to our annual two week summer vacation. Our last day before break is July 14, and we return August 4. This will give us six weeks to put on the final touches before the Fall Follies.

Jam Session News

Gene Goergen visited with me recently about exploring a “higher level” of music. He plays the dulcimer (a string instrument along the lines of a piano). This instrument consists of notes, scales, the staff, full steps, half steps, etc. I don’t know much about this, but am anxious to learn. I did try to learn concert violin in high school, but wasn’t able to, since I struggle with reading music. I am willing to keep an open mind, give it a try, and see where this leads the jam sessions and me. Please join us in the jam…we’ll keep a seat open for you!

~Pinky Catron – “The Smile Maker” Welcome to the library! I have a Book Club update…no meeting in July or August.

Our next club meeting will take place September 1, at 10:00 a.m. Our chosen book is Zoo by James Patterson. Attention all Louis L’Amour readers-we have received a large donation of his books for your reading pleasure.

Special thanks to all who worked at the book sale, and purchased books during that sale. You helped the Center!

See you in the library.

Chorus NewsWe are thinking “Follies” these days as summer flies by, but also are enjoying our

sing outs. This keeps us busy working on the new songs and polishing up the old. We hosted and entertained at the June birthday party and always enjoy the opportunity to help out the Center. As mentioned last month, we were asked to sing at the Rivercade Coronation and felt very honored.

The invitation always stands for anyone who enjoys singing to join the Active Generations Chorus. We need singers in every section, so please come and join us. Wednesday mornings, 9:00, in the Music Room…be there!

It’s good to have the refrigerator back in working order! Thanks again to all who donated to a very important cause.

As I write this (remember articles are due the 10th of the preceding publication month!) I am planning for the bake sale. I am anticipating a great turnout again, in part due to the Farmers Market Voucher days.

Still waiting to golf, first cold and windy, next hot and windy. At least I

am getting in on plenty of cards and friendship on golf days!

We are doing well in the coffee shop, but still miss PACE. On occasion

a PACE employee ventures in for a sandwich, usually

Jeff the bus driver. Always nice to rekindle the friendship and see how things are going for them.

Thanks for your help (volunteers) and purchases (guests).
