Want to Impact Kids? Join the Volunteer Ranks for our Super School News program Join the volunteers for Super School News (www.rmpbs.org/ssn) and make a difference in a child’s life. This education-based program is the oldest, continuously running production of Rocky Mountain PBS. For over 30 years, volunteers have made it possible for 5th and 6th graders to produce 2-minute news broadcasts about their schools which appear on the air. This program introduces children to the world of broadcast news and, as a result, some of the Super School News alumni have gone on to careers in journalism and broadcast.

Volunteers will be assigned a school and work with a teacher and student team (1-2 coaching sessions at the school) to design their broadcast. Volunteer training is provided. In addition, volunteers will assist with assembling information (1 morning in August and December), orientation day (1 morning in September and January) and will attend the taping session at the Denver station.

We hope you will help sustain this legacy program. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected] or Susan [email protected].

The 2016 PBS Annual Meeting and the National Friends of Public Broadcasting Workshop By Laura Sampson, RMPBS Volunteer & Trustee of National Friends

The 2016 PBS Annual Meeting in Chicago was another very impressive gathering of public television professionals connecting and collaborating to plan the future of public broadcasting. In addition to several RMPBS staff members, I attended the conference as a Trustee of National Friends of Public Broadcasting and as a longtime volunteer leader at Rocky Mountain PBS.

The Trustees of National Friends conducted a full-day pre-conference workshop at the PBS Annual Meeting for PBS volunteer managers and leaders to discuss “Volunteers In The Changing World of Public Media.” National Friends supports volunteerism within public broadcasting through leadership, education, training, mentoring and recognition. The workshop was well attended and enjoyed by all that attended.

Breaking into small discussion groups, common topics were addressed that are shared by all public media volunteers: Need of support for the volunteers by General Managers and Senior Staff; Difficulties faced trying to manage Volunteer and Staff expectations; Volunteer Retention; and Trust between staff and volunteers.

Additionally, guest speakers were sprinkled throughout 1-day workshop. Sarah Van Huis, Director of Nonprofit Development, Hands-On Suburban Chicago, gave an excellent presentation on the importance of communication, involvement, management and retention of nonprofit volunteers.

Tobi Chaudhuri, Vice President, Strategic Communications and National Partnerships at PBS, addressed the importance of public media volunteers were the “original crowdsourcers” as they raised the funds to build the original educational television system and continue to be integral to its success. Tobi said that volunteers are truly PBS' biggest asset.

Page 12: Volunteer Opportunities: June 2016pbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento-prod... · Volunteer Opportunities: June 2016 Weekend Opportunity for Volunteers: Annual Denver KIDS

America’s Public Television Stations (APTS) was represented by current President/CEO of APTS,Patrick Butler. He addressed the astonishing power of volunteers (Governing Board members, general volunteers, community spokespeople and supporters of the APTS “Protect My Public Broadcasting” initiative. Volunteers have repeatedly flooded the voicemail and inboxes of their national and local legislators to enlighten them with stories of the importance of funding for public broadcasting! Legislators are definitely listening, thanks to the thousands of volunteers whose combined force is making an impact.

The workshop was followed by the presentation of the 2016 Annual National Friends of Public Broadcasting Awards. I was honored to serve as the emcee of the Awards Ceremony recognizing volunteer leaders from across PBS. Eight incredible public media volunteers were honored for their dedication and outstanding contributions to their local stations in the areas of Volunteer Management, Fundraising, Leadership, Distinguished Service, Grassroots Advocacy and Community Development. Their remarkable stories of volunteerism are featured on www.NFPB.org.

Using the theme of “America’s Storytellers,” the general PBS Annual Meeting was very enlightening. Paula Kerger, PBS President/CEO) along with PBS staff, national PBS spokespersons, PBS Kids’ characters, authors, producers, PBS leaders and well-known actors chimed in telling attendees of the conference about the exciting “stories” that await viewers in the coming PBS season.

PBS Kids has a fabulous new program in November, “Splash and Bubbles,” that will be hugely popular with preschoolers. PBS primetime will be overflowing with superb “stories” from Masterpiece, NOVA, Frontline, American Masters, Genealogy Roadshow, American Experience, Independent Lens, PBS NewsHour -- and much more! Be sure to tune in.

Page 13: Volunteer Opportunities: June 2016pbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento-prod... · Volunteer Opportunities: June 2016 Weekend Opportunity for Volunteers: Annual Denver KIDS

By Laura Sampson Founder, Station’s Archived Memories (SAM)

Viewers of Rocky Mountain PBS have always loved programs about animals. “Zoo Time” was a 10-week series that started on June 8, 1960. The purpose of the program was to acquaint Denverites with their local zoo. Along with elephants, “Zoo Time” featured numerous zoo animals including polar bears, sea lions and lions – oh, my! Enjoy the pictures from this fun series!

Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) is an award winning volunteer-driven project to preserve the history of Rocky Mountain PBS. If you would like to know more about the archives, please visit RMPBS.org/SAM, contact the SAM office at 303-620-5734 or [email protected]. ZOO TIME
