Letter from the Executive Director and Board of Director Chair2018 was a wonderful year for VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads!

Our VolunTier Vision program went live early in the year and we were able to match over 100 individuals to skilled volunteer and board service opportunities in Hampton Roads. Nonprofit organizations now count on VOLUNTEER

Hampton Roads to recruit the best talent in our region to address their needs and increase their impact in the community.

We had a successful year of volunteer service projects beginning with our Hunger Heroes event in June. 300 volunteers spent their Saturday morning at Virginia Wesleyan University packing 600 USDA food boxes for families who benefit from the services of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. This event kicked off our Summer of Service which included our Teacher’s Closet project and engaged volunteers from 20 local businesses who served over 8,743 hours. We didn’t stop there, instead, we moved right into our Family Volunteer Day. This event, held the weekend before Thanksgiving, we painted and placed over 300 rocks for Children’s Health Investment Program that brought awareness to the importance of a child’s first 2,000 days of life; created 800 emergency preparedness kits for seniors who receive meals on wheels; formed 2,000 seed bombs that the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation will plant on Arbor Day, and wrapped 120 birthday gifts for children in foster care.

From big events to everyday tasks, our community relies on VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads to harness the power of volunteerism to make a difference in Hampton Roads. Through our website, nonprofit organizations engaged over 2,000 volunteers in our area last year. These volunteers participated in 764 projects ranging from local race event staff, to bingo fundraisers, to literacy tutors and Meals-on-Wheels drivers, for a total of over 23,800 donated hours.

Our work is only a reality because of the generous support of the Hampton Roads community. Thank you!

The Legacy of Lenora Mathews LENORA MATHEWS TRIBUTE

Lenora Mathews was a woman before her time. She was a visionary, who as the first executive director of VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads, created an organization that made it possible for anyone and everyone to serve their community as a volunteer. Her vision grew into the mission that our organization has today, to CONNECT businesses with opportunities which create a positive impact on our community; to EQUIP nonprofits with the resources they need to achieve their mission; to MOBILIZE a community of volunteers to create change. In addition to realizing the impact that volunteers make on Hampton Roads, Lenora also felt strongly about the need to recognize these volunteers publicly. In 1975, she began the first Hampton Roads Volunteer Achievement Awards. 44 years later, we are still hosting this inspiring and uplifting event that highlights the efforts of many individuals and groups who contribute their time in our community. In 1998, the Lenora Mathews Lifetime Achievement award was given to honor her. Since then, this award has recognized 20 individuals who have used their influence, dedication to their community, time and voice to lead and encourage volunteerism and

community service.

JOAN P. BROCKCOMMUNITY PHILANTHROPIST

A native of Norfolk, Virginia Joan graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a minor in Mathematics. She later returned to the university to earn her Master of Arts in Humanities. Steadfast in her community

efforts, Brock dedicates her knowledge and skills to organizations and programs that benefit culture, education, and community. She has chaired the board of Virginia Wesleyan College, the Access College Foundation and was the first woman to preside over the Chrysler Museum Board. Active in the United Way of South Hampton Roads, she served on the Women United Global Leadership Council. She has served on the Sentara Board of Directors and served as chair of the Sentara Foundation. She currently serves on the Hampton Roads Community Foundation board and the board of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She was selected as the 2019 First Citizen of Norfolk by the Cosmopolitan Club.

Devoted to the Hampton Roads community, she and her husband established the M. Foscue Brock Institute for Community and Global Health at Eastern Virginia Medical School. With their interest in protecting our environment, they helped fund the Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach. The Brocks have received many commendations for their commitment to giving back. Most recently, they were recognized as Health Care Heroes for their participation in health-related philanthropy by “Inside Business” magazine and were honored as Outstanding Philanthropists by the National Board of American Fundraising Professionals in 2015. Joan Brock is the widow of Macon Brock, co-founder of Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. She worked as part of the administrative team of the company for over 30 years. She and her husband were married 53 years, with three children and six grandchildren.

Through VolunTier Vision, VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads matches volunteers with specific skills from our talent bank to nonprofit organizations in need of those skills. Our talent bank is filled with individuals who are looking to donate their expertise to nonprofits through skilled volunteering or board service. These volunteers are key resources to the nonprofits they are matched with and through the donation of their professional service and time they help the organization to achieve their mission and expand their capacity to help.

Nonprofits fill out a free assessment that enters their board or skilled needs into our database. Our software uses their mission and cause along with specific needs to match them to volunteers who have indicated interest in the same cause and are qualified to fill their needs. By eliminating the stress and guess work of finding a well-suited match we maximize the impact made by both groups.

The skilled volunteers we engage begin working on projects that utilize their professional skills such as accounting or information technology. As they complete projects, they form relationships and an understanding of the nonprofit and can move up a tier of service to donate time and exapertise through board service.

SIGNATURE FAMILY WEALTH ADVISORS The 2019 Corporate Volunteer Excellence Award is presented to Signature Family Wealth Advisors’ founders, Anne Shumadine, in memoriam, and Susan Colpitts. Mrs. Shumadine and Mrs. Colpitts, co-founded Signature in 1994 to meet client’s financial needs in new and innovative ways. Today, the company is still guided by this goal and adheres to other service-oriented values such as “be giving with your time and gracious with your attention”. This commitment does not end with clients. Both Mrs. Colpitts and Mrs. Shumadine have a long history of graciously giving their time and talent to the community.

Mrs. Shumadine’s commitment to her clients was coupled with a commitment to serve the Hampton Roads’ community. As a rector and long-time supporter of Old Dominion University and Eastern Virginia Medical School, a trustee of Virginia Wesleyan

University, and a trustee and former president of the Access College Foundation, Mrs. Shumadine affected the lives of countless college students in the area. Community and civic organizations also benefited from her contributions. These include, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Chrysler Museum of Art, and the Norfolk Day Nursery Association.

Mrs. Colpitts’ lifelong goal of giving back to the community has been fulfilled in part because of the lessons in leadership she has learned through her business success. She is currently a Director of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation and Vice-

Chair of Virginia Humanities. She has been involved with a wide variety of organizations from the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, to United Way of South Hampton Roads, Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore, Community Leadership Partners, the Virginia Symphony, and the Chrysler Museum of Art.
